10 BRAND NEW PRODUCTS INSIDE!
VIBRATING MOTORS Vibrating motors are used in loads of products, most commonly as the part in your mobile phone that lets you know you have a call or message when the phone is on silent. They are a tiny motor with an off centre weight, which when the motor spins causes it to vibrate. Whilst they have a lot of practical applications they are a perfect starting point for a vibrating bug or creature. The motor runs off 3V which means that it can be powered by a coin cell battery which allows a small creature to be made. We even have a small PCB with a coin cell and switch on it that is ideal for this project. For the body you can use a tooth brush head or make something on the laser cutter. We are currently working on some laser cutter files that will be available for free download in the next month or two.

KITRONIK INVESTS IN THE FUTURE Over the last few years E-Textiles has been a rapidly changing product area. Looking back at our catalogue from two years ago we had 1½ pages on E-Textiles. In the current catalogue there’s five pages and on top of that we are working on some other additions. As well as adding a lot of new products the original E-Textiles range has been improved over this period. Now only the thread remains in the current catalogue, the other kits and boards have been superseded by new and improved products. As the new Electro-Fashion range has grown in
popularity having the coin cell boards hand soldered by a local company has proved less and less viable. Kitronik are now the proud owner of a reflow oven, which basically means that we can speed up the job of making the boards and ensure we always have plenty of stock. As an off shoot we are planning to use the same kit to be able to make a range of sensor breakout board which will be perfect for GCSE projects.
Product details on the Electro-Fashion range can be found on our website: www.kitronik.co.uk/quicklinks/electrofashion/

SENSORS & RASPBERRY PI CASE
FLEX SENSOR 2.2"
FORCE SENSITIVE RESISTOR
A simple flex sensor 2.2" in length. As the sensor is flexed, the resistance across the sensor increases. The resistance of the flex sensor changes when the metal pads are on the outside of the bend. Connector is 0.1" spaced and bread board friendly.
This is a Force Sensitive Resistor (FSR) with a square, 1.75x1.5", sensing area. This FSR will vary its resistance depending on how much pressure is being applied to the sensing area. The harder the force, the lower the resistance. This FSR can sense applied force anywhere in the range of 100g-10kg.

RECORD PLAYBACK MODULE If you’re looking for a project where you can record a short memo or you want to playback the same message over and over again then this is the project kit you need. The kit uses an ISD1820 which is a single chip solution to record and playback a single message. Whilst it doesn’t sound that complicated there’s actually a lot
going on inside the chip. This includes control to switch between record and playback, microphone amplification, analogue to digital conversion, sampling clocks, memory, digital to analogue and amplification to drive the speaker. Fortunately the chip does all the hard work and only needs a handful of components to operate.

Status LED
www.kitronik.co.uk/quicklinks/2149/ In a normal school project the board can be used as built, however there is an interface connector on the board that allows some of the functionality to be taken off board. When an external switch is required for record or playback it can be wired into the interface connector. Also if you only want to play part of the message or want to loop the message this can be done through the interface

connector. It is possible to monitor the signal used by the status LED, which can be useful if you are driving the module from a micro-controller and need to know when the playback is complete. There is also an audio output for occasions where higher power amplification is needed.
RECORD PLAYBACK MODULE This module allows a short (10 second) message to be recorded and played back at the push of a button. There is one button to play the message and another to re-record the message which can be done over and over again. The board includes a status LED which indicates that recording is in progress or that playback has completed. Both the speaker and microphone are PCB mounted so the only flying leads are for the battery holder which takes 2 AA batteries. Because the module shuts down when it is not in use the batteries will last a very long time. An interface connector is available for more advanced users that wish to access the control signals. Requires x2 AA batteries, available separately. Description

SQUEEZY TORCH KIT The squeezy torch kit is an incredibly simple kit. It requires no soldering and can be built by people who have no electronics experience at all. Once built the torch is turned on by squeezing/squashing the torch. This compresses the foam core which causes the legs of the LED to touch the battery, turning it on. The kit includes: 1 x High brightness white LED 1 x 3V coin cell
1 x Neoprene foam core 2 x White PVC outer covers

SQUEEZY TORCH KIT - BUILD INSTRUCTIONS STEP 2:
STEP 1:
Insert the coin cell battery into the circular cut out in the neoprene foam core.
Now place the legs of the LED either side of the battery and foam layer, as shown in the picture. The longest leg of the LED should be placed on the side of the battery marked with the ‘+’ sign.
Double-sided Tape
STEP 3:
STEP 4:
The next step is to apply double sided tape to one side of each of the white PVC pieces. Remove the cover of the double sided tape and lay the PVC pieces on either side of the foam inner layer. Ensure that it is aligned with the foam centre.
It’s time to see if your torch works! Gently squeeze the two white sides of the torch together and the LED should come on.
