EMILIO DE LA MORENA * FASHION Interview by Mike Vensel

EM: My name is Emilio de la Morena and I am a fashion designer.

MV: Would you say that you use a specific color palette or does it change from collection to collection?

MV: How long have you been designing?

EM: I think it has changed from last collection, but it has something to do with what I have designed in the past. I use to use only blacks, whites, and nudes; and I think this season I tried to focus on these colors where I feel most comfortable: the nudes the blacks the white, maybe some grays and some accents in there, maybe a little bit of yellow, but there’s not as many colors as before.

EM: My own collection since July of 2005. MV: Where are you from originally? EM: I am from Madrid, Spain. MV: How would you compare the fashion in England to the fashion in Spain?

MV: What can we expect to see from you in the future?

EM: I think London is a very creative space, so the young designers are here to explore their creativity. It’s a very cosmopolitan place, I think everyone tries to make it in London. Spain is quite creative but it’s mainly Spanish people, I think in Spain they have a view that they are a bit isolated from Europe as far as design, But I think there are a lot of very talented designers in Spain.

EM: I really want to continue developing garments that are unique and have a lot of craftsmanship and a lot of development, borrowing ideas from couture instead of prêt-a-porter. I think designers now can make a difference by having really interesting shapes and detail in the garments, so that’s the way I would like to go. MV: What advice could you give to a designer just starting out?

MV: What inspires you? EM: Shapes, color, silhouettes, some designers really inspire me. And technique inspires me. The craftsmanship.

EM: I think you have to be very determined, you have to network a lot, be super positive - just be out there, don’t be discouraged. For more information please vist: www.emiliodelamorena.com

MV: What is your signature? EM: I think it’s a combination of silhouettes and craftsmanship, working with certain techniques such as piping or pleating. MV: Can you tell us about your spring/summer collection? EM: It’s a development from the autumn/winter collection in which I use techniques that I am interested in, such as piping, to create some sort of surface decoration, in a harder way. I think the silhouettes in this collection are harder, they are stronger and more sophisticated in a way, and sexy as well. I am inspired to dress a woman who is younger and very strong.

PETER GURNZ * ART

Interview by Mike Vensel PG: My name is Pete Gurnz and I am an industrial designer, artist and founder of Boxeight studios. MV: How long have you been a designer and artist? PG: I’ve been a designer ever since I graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, and an artist from birth 28 years ago. MV: How would you describe your work? PG: The fundamentals of industrial design is form and function, i’d call myself much more of a functional artist than an industrial designer, although it’s hard to separate the two. But my work is less commercial and more one of a kind and art oriented. It’s functional, its purpose is to provide ambiance to an interior space.

It’s similar to a chandelier in the functionality in what it does to a grand ballroom, or that of a stained-glass window in a church. This is just for more modern, progressive types of environments: be that of a loft, or nightclub, or warehouse, whatever it may be. MV: What inspires you? PG: Beauty inspires me, art stores inspire me, life inspires me, women inspire me. Designers, Artists, Photographers. It’s pretty endless. MV: Where did you get the idea for your gels series? PG: It started in college. it was an exhibition design class, and I was designing a retail store for a club environment. Sort of break dance gear and things like that. It was actually for the Tunnel nightclub in New York City where I am originally from and lived for 26 years.

I was trying to create some sort of advertisement within that environment that would fit that environment, and I stumbled onto a process of turning images or photography into a clear medium similarto a stained glass window. It could be lit from either side. With daylight utilizing natural light they have one look and at night with lighting they have a whole different vibe to them. MV: How do you decide what you are going to do in a gel?

MV: What can we expect to see from you in the future? PG: You will see me in my involvement with Boxeight studios doing things all around downtown Los Angeles in various different events and exhibitions. I will probably go on tour with my new collection around the US and maybe Europe. You will see a line of Peter Gurnz and Boxeight products. For more information please visit:

PG: I think that’s where the artist aspect of my work comes in. The imagery I use is very important to me, I could make paintings. As far as the women that I have been using so far, they are people I have a story with. It’s life, you are in life, your experiences and things, you have live thought, and I like to honor those experience and those people.

JENNIFER LANG * FASHION Interview by Mike Vensel

JL: My name is Jennifer Lang and I am a knitwear designer.

MV: How would you describe the London fashion scene?

MV: How long have you been designing?

JL: The London fashion scene always has a certain edge about it, it’s always people pushing it much further I think than Milan and other places, but I think people know that about London, and that’s why they come here.

JL: Two years, knitting for 10. MV: What are your signature designs? JL: My signature designs are the string pieces, the four dresses that multi-layer over one another.

MV: What can we expect to see from your future collections?

MV: When were you first interested in fashion?

JL: Much more of my signature dresses, a lot more hand-knitting, creative and innovative bolder pieces; short pieces are my forte. Something a bit more creative I think.

JL: Just when I was younger, I was always interested in fashion and I did textile design in school, and it just seemed like a natural progression. MV: What inspires you?

MV: What advice could you give to someone starting off in fashion design?

JL: Sculpture, art, things that are a little bit different, three dimensional form.

JL: Just follow your dreams, just keep going, if it’s something you really want to do - you just have to grasp out and go get it.

MV: Have you worked in other materials?

For more information please visit:

JL: I have worked in leather and silk, but my passion lies in knitwear.

www.jennifer-lang.com

MV: Why have you chosen knitwear as your primary fabrication? JL: I enjoy knitting up the structures, Pattern cutting is completely different. I like to build as I go with the knitwear. MV: Can you tell us about your spring/summer collection? JL: It’s quite an easy feeling collection; it still has the signature string, a lot of chunky hand knitted cable pieces. That is also another signature of mine. Just easy wearable pieces, looking at embroidery, lace, and things that you can wear with jeans; it’s a very simple but innovative and unique collection. MV: Would you say you are inspired by London? JL: I guess I do look at people and how they dress, but I would say that my main inspiration comes from sculpture and other things.

AUTOMATIC PANIC * MUSIC Interview by Mike Vensel

Kitten*

AP: My name is Automatic Panic. I produce and perform electro music.

MV: When did you decide you wanted to be a musician?

MV: Where does the name Automatic Panic come from?

AP: Like I mentioned before, as a teenager, like many other artists.

AP: About six years ago, I was trying to come up with an artist name that would describe me in some way, and at that time I was dealing with a lot of panic attacks. So I figure Automatic Panic would fit me perfectly. Lucky for me I am panic-free since then.

MV: How would you describe your music? AP: It seriously depends on my moods. Sometimes I like to go more towards what I describe as electro punk, by adding a hard edge to my synths; and other times I find myself going back to my 80’s new wave synthpop roots.

MV: How long have you been a musician? MV: What inspires you? AP: I would say about 17 years. I started out at an early age on drums in middle school, but I kept telling my parents that I wanted to be a rock star guitar player. I got tired of the air guitar, so my parents went out and bought me a bass guitar (they were told by the salesman it was best to start me on bass). My parents thought that the music thing was just a phase for me. Anyway, I was like “Hell no! Not a bass I need a six string!” Haha. I managed to break the bass within the first month that I had it. I then switched to playing keyboards because new wave music was big at that time and I wanted to sound like Gary Neuman. So that is how I got into this crazy, love-of-my-life relationship with music.

AP: Depression. Seems like when I’m sad then I am better to make a song that will get people’s attention. MV: What can we expect to hear from you in the future? AP: More electro, soon a full-length release of all of my music. I would also love to do more fashion show/art exhibits and any other music media.
