Urho sauna ferry The Urho sauna ferry operates on Lake Saimaa. The ferry runs subject to reservation and trips naturally include a skipper and a deckhand. The ferry is ideal for recreational and cruise activities in the stunning landscapes of Lake Saimaa. The massive ferry, measuring 13 x 6 metres, is moored at Mikkeli harbour. Mikkeli region and Lake Saimaa are made up of a number of stretches of open water linked by straits and dotted with islands. By paddling, one discovers the hidden beaches and calm bays that are located on the 14.000 islands of the region.

Mikkeli Valkea An easily accessible hiking place located on Lake Ihastjärvi. Suitable for nature enthusiasts, people going fishing and, above all, families with small children.

A permit is required for fishing (eraluvat.fi).

The area includes an easy 2.2-km trail with some duckboards going around the river, a campfire site, a lean-to and a chemical toilet.

Top 3 Routes to Nature Repovesi national park

Astuvansalmi rock paintings

Neitvuori peak

Repovesi is a popular national park between Mäntyharju and Kouvola that is ideal for hiking and snowshoe expeditions. Repovesi offers interesting attractions including the suspension bridge at Lapinsalmi and the hills Olhavanvuori and Katajanvuori. The park has signposted hiking trails, and you can get there along the Mäntyharju-Pertunmaa hiking trail.

The Astuvansalmi rock paintings in Ristiina are the most extensive prehistoric rock paintings in Scandinavia and date back 5000 years. The paintings include startling mystical symbols, images of elks and humans, and palm prints. You can gain access to the rock paintings during the summer by joining a cruise with M/S Kuutti.

Neitvuori The Hiidenmaa trails run along the border between Mikkeli and Juva. You can enter the trails from Anttola and Siikakoski. The trails take you to the tallest peak in South Savo, Neitvuori, which offers a splendid view over the terrain around Luonteri.

Paddling Luonteri archipelago loop This route meanders through the stunning Luonteri archipelago, where lucky paddlers may catch a glimpse of the rare Saimaa Ringed Seal. Sights along the way include Neitvuori Hill, the largest peak in the region, and magnificent granite cliffs. Squirrel Route (Oravareitti) The popular Squirrel Route between Juva and Sulkava is ideal for families.

The Squirrel Route is the first aquatic nature trail in Finland that has been biologically examined and marked. Infantry Museum March with us through the history of the Finnish infantry! The Infantry Museum presents our main military force – the infantry – from the time of Swedish rule to the present day. The museum is located in two wooden barracks buildings from the 1880s, situated in the historic barracks area around Tykkipuisto park.

The permanent exhibition presents the story of independent Finland from the infantry’s perspective. The newest of the eleven special exhibitions are The Road to Independence – the Battle for Freedom in 1918, the exhibitions of Peacekeepers and the Marching Band, Treasures from the Trenches – an exhibition of handicrafts, and Radio Station (OI4JM).

Wash up, put on a sauna hat to protect your hair, take a sauna seat cover with you.

Enjoy the initial sauna heat in a quite dry sauna, then start throwing water calmly on the sauna stove but do not use the sauna whisk, because your skin has not yet softened.

5 After the first round of sweating,

go take a shower or possibly go swimming.

Enjoy the first cooling session and a refreshing sauna beverage.

Go in for another round of sauna heat gently whisking with the sauna whisk.

Cool off outside and have a drink of water.

Sauna cleanses both the body and mind.

Hot, pure air does you good and takes away futile worries. A sauna whisk made of birch leaves provides pleasure, deep-cleanses and refreshes the skin. However, the other sauna goers should be taken into consideration while whisking making sure to avoid the burning sensation of hot air imposed on the person sitting next to you. Start whisking your hands, then your arms towards the heart and upwards from your feet. Whisk the abdomen and lower back, shoulders and sides.

Heat up the sauna to a suitable temperature (approx. 80 degrees).
