Kristin Choi, born in Seoul, South Korea, is a promising interior designer. However, she spent her teenage life in various countries, including South Korea, Malaysia, Canada, Brazil, and United State due to educational and personal reason. Since she moved into many places, she has become naturally interested in interior design. She believes that designing living space is the most creative way to make people rest, work, entertain, learn, heal, and feel secure while it can improve sustainable environment. She has had a broad understanding of different cultures and points of view. Her international experience defines her creativity and originality. Before she decided to journey through her life as an interior designer, she used to be a junior professional Latin ballroom dancer over 6 years. Kristin is open minded and extroverted person through numerous life experiences. In free time, she loves to explore beautiful hidden places in the city with her favorite pet, Aki as well as she loves to cook and invite her friends to her house. Now, she is excited to move forward to make another great experience in her life.

CLIENT:
The National Geographic society focuses on educating people about their planet with various techniques, such as their documental television network, movie documentaries, magazine, games, internet databases, and interactive events. Their journalism is one of the best for education with thousands of articles with in depth about explorations around and through the Earth. The National Geographic is also an incredible source for designers in strengthening their ecological literacy to ensure sustainable design decisions. Designers are responsible for specifying materials, products, and furnishing it’s important to research the impacts that our built urban environment has on the natural environment.

CONCEPT: Eastman Interchangable Camera Eastman camera invented in 1888 as same year as National Geographic magazine published the first issue. Eastman camera is mostly made of cherry wood and leather. Hardware of Eastman camera is glass, steel, and brass. The unique feature of Eastman camera is that it can tilt, swing, f lip, expand, and shrink. I attempt to design the interior space based on geometric components, golden section ratio, various materials, and multi-characteristic of space uses.

This is the first view of National Geographic Magazine office on the second floor when employees come up from exhibition area. The reception desk is designed for people with disability as well. The steel pendant light fixture, which is same as the lobby lighting fixture on the first floor, reminds the concept of the project once again, Eastman interchangeable camera once again. The large conference room is located next to reception area. Since many people visit National Geographic office due to collaboration works, the open and clear location of the conference room directs visitors without confusion. For special occasions and events, the doors of the conference room can be folded against the wall. This does not only allow people to use space widely depending on their needs but to utilize for multi-purpose. Different flooring texture indicates way-finding and different use of spaces subconsciously to the people.

Impacts of Retirement and Senior Housing Due to a development of medical technology and improvement of our lifestyles, we are able to live longer than the previous generations. This also affects senior people because they have longer lives. As the result, it is a common situation that individual member of families lives apart. This phenomenon makes senior people feel lonely. It is easy for elder people to feel depressed. They may have less energy to be with other. They may have lost someone that they have loved. They may be a lack of sleep. They may have physical and/or mental issues to
deal with. Due to all the reasons, the senior housing has been developed to support elder people and to help their communication skills. According to National Council on Aging( NCOA), over 25 million Americans aged 60+ are economically insecure. Understanding client’s situation should be ref lected in an interior design. Functionality, duality, and sustainability is considered in this project while keeping aesthetic. Low maintenance material is an important feature to seniors because
elders do not have major income. The net-zero building takes some burden of seniors’ financial situation since they do not have to worry about the upcoming bill to pay. IVY senior living provides cozy and welcoming feeling so that seniors can relax and focus on their healthy program. Open space with less obstacle makes easier way finding. Only chemical free materials are used for those who have weak immune systems. IVY senior living will suggest healthy and balanced lifestyles of seniors..
My intention is to provide the calming and relaxing atmosphere while continuing senior’s lives with interest and joy after retirement. The neutral color will bring calmness while accent colors, such as rusty orange and deep blue, will provide joy and brightness.

CONCEPT Wabi-Sabi is the quintessential Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection. It accepts the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death. The concept of Wabi-Sabi is originally from Zen Buddhism, which is particularly Japanese tea ceremony. It is the form of simplicity as well as irregularly shaped with uneven glaze and cracks. Unrefined textures and color in their deliberate imperfection. Everything changes whether it is a human being or a fixed building. My objective is to utilize principles of Wabi-Sabi in the spatial design to inspire the senior’s way of living. The seniors will find both refuge and courage in IVY senior living to regain their physical and mental health.

Earth tone based entrance design welcomes guests and seniors. Wood door panel surrounding atrium is inspired by traditional Japanese door shape. The shape of doors bring the entire of interior space even more unique and harmonized with the theme of the building. Universal design shows in customized reception desk. Depth between glass counter top and a wood panel is 4 (regular reception desk) and 9 (ADA reception desk). It makes disability people easier to go underneath of the desk while talking to receptionists.

W here Does t he Idea Come From? I make a feature of satellite simpler to create patterns that I have inspired from night view of world map via satellite camera. The satellite simpler is made of polished copper. The contrast between copper and black plaster wall finish creates the unique and focal point in the restaurant.

119 Residential Design
Scandinavian Style Resident
119
The goal of the project is to design the interior space that our clients request. Our clients are the young couple that recently got married. They want to have minimal Scandinavian style residents that can offer the most enjoyable living space.

CONCEP T My client is married couple that works at home during a day time. Also, they communicate with many clients at home. I choose ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT BOARD as my concept. The electrical circuit board is all about connections with electricity and circuit lines. When circuits close, electricity f lows well. If it opens, electricity stops f lowing as well as the device stops working. I wish my clients’ business goes well all the time as if the electricity f lows well on the circuit board.

DEEP GRADIENT/ SUSPECT TERRAIN
Deep gradient / Suspect terrain
Deep gradient / Suspect Terrain, also known as a Glass ship, is created by John Roloff in 1993. This 18-foot-high sculpture rises above the East Garden terrace accompanied by portholes that allow a hint of activity to be seen at the Moscone Center, located below the gardens. Roloff said, “ at the site,
a land is an illusion with the gardens

above and convention space below - a metaphor for the ocean, a different world, and the surface of the sea.” Although the sculpture has great meaning with the interesting look, it is known for one of the failure sculpture due to few reasons. Thus, I
intended to bright up the surrounding of sculpture as well as the orientation of the landscape design so that people feel more attractive about the sculpture. Also, blue LED light contains the meaning of hope to emphasize the meaning of sculptor’s origin purpose. perspective view of origin site and sculpture
