“THE VOICE OF THE SEA SPEAKS TO THE SOUL,” wrote Kate Chopin in The Awakening. Lake Superior is a freshwater sea. No wonder people are drawn to her shore as a place to rejuvenate the body, feed the spirit and even rekindle romance. Here are some ways to immerse yourself in the beauty and power of the big lake. RELAXATION & ROMANCE

Leave your cares at the county line. Here, you can indulge in a massage among the most dramatic scenery in Minnesota, bask with your sweetheart in a private hot tub with a glass of wine amidst millions of acres of wilderness, or simply sit and watch the lake. If you get a thrill from waves and wind, visit in November. In the fall, frigid lowpressure systems from the Arctic swing down over Lake Superior and bump into warmer systems fed by the jet stream. These collisions can spawn ferocious gales. We celebrate this display of Superior’s wild side with the annual Lake Superior Storm Festival. Our communities offer plenty of snug harbors for storm watching. Hunker down with a hot beverage and behold the drama in comfort.

No gear or experience? No worries. Book a paddling tour (including sunset, half-day or multi-day trips). Experienced paddlers can rent equipment for unguided use.

No wonder people are drawn to her shore as a place to rejuvenate the body, feed the spirit and even rekindle romance. Alternatively, try a stand-up paddle board (SUP) tour. They’re more stable than you think – you don’t have to be athletic to enjoy this adventure. And you’ll never forget the feeling of gliding serenely over Superior’s surface.

LAKE SUPERIOR

FACTS

It is named “Superior” for a reason. As the largest freshwater lake in the world, Lake Superior has as much water as all of the great lakes (Michigan, Huron, Ontario, Erie) plus three more Lake Eries! • Surface area: 31,700 square miles or roughly 10% of the world’s surface water • Length: 350 miles • Width: 160 miles • Volume: 3 quadrillion gallons (that is enough to cover both North and South America under a foot of water) • Shoreline: 1,826 miles • Average Depth: 483 feet Maximum Depth: 1,276 feet • Shipwrecks: over 350 • Average water temperature: 40º Fahrenheit • Ojibwe name: Gichigami – meaning “big water” • Gems: the Lake Superior agate is the official Minnesota state gemstone. Other unique gemstones include thomsonite, Isle Royale greenstone and a variety of other stones. More: visitcookcounty.com/lakesuperior

shoreline. Lake trout begin to bite early in the spring and good fishing continues into the fall. Coho and Chinook salmon are also caught beginning in late summer, usually by trolling within a few miles of shore. Charter captains can take you out for half-day or full-day adventures on Lake Superior. Charters will take care of special equipment needs and help arrange the appropriate license. Dress warmly!

For fishing or scenic sailing, BYOB (Bring Your Own Boat) is an option, too. For a sightseeing voyage to remember, visit in September and behold the glory of fall colors from the water. More: visitcookcounty.com/sailing visitcookcounty.com/fishing

GRAND MARAIS

Grand Marais

America’s Coolest Small Town

ARTSY AND QUIRKY

The North Shore harbor village of Grand Marais welcomes creatives, families and adventure seekers alike. The accolades almost speak for themselves. Grand Marais has been named America’s Coolest Small Town (Budget Travel Magazine), Top 100 Adventure Town (National Geographic Adventure Magazine), and just recently was dubbed one of the 16 Best Places to Live in the U.S. (Outside Magazine).

HARBOR PLEASURES

Grand Marais is a village made for strolling, so lace your shoes and reclaim the simple pleasures of a walk. Browse unique shops owned by local artisans. Experience Artists’ Point, an easy half-mile hike to a tiny boreal forest surrounded on three sides by Lake Superior. Access the Grand Marais lighthouse and look west for a dramatic view of the Sawtooth Mountains. Refuel with diner fare, cafe cuisine or a cold microbrew. Watch otters play by the dock. Sip cappuccino and skip

rocks at the cobblestone beach. Or, in winter, sip cocoa and look for natural “ice sculptures” along the shoreline. Inspired? Perfect. Grand Marais is home to the Grand Marais Art Colony, North House Folk School, art festivals, and galleries galore (More on page 30), plus an array of one-of-a-kind festivals and events (More on page 3).

ADVENTURE SPRINGBOARD

Grand Marais is a springboard for outdoor adventures of all stripes. Trekking amidst fall colors, for example. Gravel and single track biking. Snowmobiling and ice fishing. Cross-country skiing by starlight. Paddling a canoe or sea kayak. Stand-up paddleboarding and sailing. Driving up the Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway to look for moose. Hiking to Devil’s Kettle Falls in Judge C.R. Magney State Park. And even more. More: visitcookcounty.com/grandmarais visitcookcounty.com 17

GUNFLINT TRAIL

Gunflint Trail

Gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness THE GUNFLINT TRAIL is the North Shore

gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), named one of the world’s “50 Places of a Lifetime” by National Geographic. The Gunflint Trail (County Road 12) begins in Grand Marais and winds through forests and past lakes, ending at Lake Saganaga. Keep watch for moose and other wildlife along this 57-mile paved road.

LAND OF THE SKY BLUE WATERS

Picture a storybook northwoods summer: loons, lodges, shimmering water, pristine Minnesota forest. That’s what you’ll find on the Gunflint Trail, spring, summer and fall. Watch morning mist caress a glacier-carved lake. Fish by boat or canoe for walleye, smallmouth, and lake trout. Take your first Boundary Waters canoe trip with the help of a friendly outfitter (See more on page 28). Wander hiking trails, picking wild blueberries. Learn the cultural and natural history of the land, lakes and people at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center. Get an eagle’s-eye view of the wilderness on the Towering Pines Canopy Tour. At night, gaze at the Milky Way Galaxy in the dark night sky.

ENCHANTED WINTER

Snowfall transforms the Gunflint Trail into a fairy tale – and a playground. Glide along three networks of groomed cross-country ski trails, traversing wildly-scenic terrain. Go snowmobiling. Catch a fish through the ice. Treat yourself to a sauna. Thrill your kids with a dogsled ride. No matter what you’re doing, have your camera ready, because winter is prime time for spotting wildlife – think moose, wolf, deer, eagle, fox, owl and lynx. At night, look for the aurora borealis – the northern lights – then warm up by the flickering fire. More: visitcookcounty.com/gunflinttrail

Renaissance

Northern

Where natural wonders meet art, history and culture WHAT HAPPENS WHEN CULTURES MINGLE?

When artists work amidst natural splendor? When museums and galleries are just steps away from canyons, lakes, waterfalls, mountains, Lake Superior vistas and endless braids of trails? Magic, that’s what. From live music to photography to traditional crafts, Cook County will feed your sense of connection and inspiration. More: visitcookcounty.com/arts 30 Cook County Visitor Guide

LIVING CULTURE

For centuries, the rugged northern Minnesota landscape has nourished the Ojibwe culture of Grand Portage, home of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Learn more about the traditions, myths and regional history of this vibrant culture at the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center and the Grand Portage State Park Exhibit Hall (see more on page 32). During the second full weekend in August, join the Grand Portage community to celebrate Rendezvous Days and Pow-Wow. Everyone is welcome. More: visitcookcounty.com/grandportage

ARTS AND ARTISANS

Feel that? Creativity is in the fresh air. Cook County abounds with artists, musicians, artisans and opportunities to stretch your creative skills. (No wonder our arts economy is highly ranked). Get inspired – and maybe pick up a memento of your visit – by browsing our many galleries.

Over 155 different species of birds inhabit the Superior National Forest, designated a Globally Important Bird Area. More: visitcookcounty.com/birding • Tofte: Visit the Tofte Commercial Fishing Museum • Grand Marais: Visit Johnson Heritage Post and multiple sites maintained by the Cook County Historical Society. Also, hike out toward the Grand Marais lighthouse and look for the Victorian-era signatures etched into the rocks • Gunflint Trail: Visit the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center at the end of the Gunflint Trail • Grand Portage: Visit the Grand Portage National Monument to see the history of the North American fur trade come to life

Then take a class or workshop. The Grand Marais Art Colony – the oldest art colony in Minnesota, founded in 1947 – offers workshops for kids and adults in everything from intaglio printmaking to plein air painting. It also produces the annual summer Grand Marais Arts Festival. North House Folk School is a nationally-renowned center for traditional northern crafts like building your own rowboat or timber-frame house, making homemade sausage, or dying your own fibers with plants. Follow local art happenings with the weekly blog NorthShore ArtScene. While you’re here, tune into 90.7 FM for stories and updates from WTIP: North Shore Community Radio.

INSPIRING EVENTS

STEP INTO HISTORY

RETREATS AND FESTIVALS GALORE

We believe history is anything but dusty and boring. Here are some fun ways to encounter the past in Cook County: • Stay at a historic lodge or resort (we have many) • Schroeder: Visit Father Baragas’ Cross and Cross River Heritage Center

More: visitcookcounty.com/arts

Throughout the year, our communities spark and celebrate creativity. Enjoy plays and musicals by the Grand Marais Playhouse. Concerts and special performances at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais, hosted by the North Shore Music Association. Like the Northern Fibers retreat, held in February; Art Along the Lake, held during Memorial Day weekend; the summer Grand Marais Arts Festival; the North Shore Readers and Writers Festival held every other November. And many more. Check the calendar and see what’s happening during your trip dates, or – better yet – plan a trip around an event that speaks to you. GRAND PORTAGE

Grand Portage Where Legends Live

AT THE VERY TIP of Minnesota’s Arrowhead, about 45 minutes northeast of Grand Marais, sits the community of Grand Portage. It is a place steeped in tradition and vibrant culture. Home to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, this community has been a legendary meeting place for centuries – and after one visit you’ll understand why. NORTHERN CROSSROADS

History and nature buffs will love Grand Portage National Monument, where you can encounter historical reenactors at the voyageur-era trading post, learn about the heritage of the Grand Portage Ojibwe people, hike old portage trails, and marvel at the bluegreen waters of Grand Portage Bay. During the second full weekend in August, the Grand Portage community celebrates two iconic events: the National Park Service’s Rendezvous Days and the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa Pow-Wow.

FOR EXCITEMENT OF A DIFFERENT KIND

Feeling lucky? Head to the newly renovated 15,000 square foot Grand Portage Lodge and Casino. Playing with a Lake Superior view makes it a truly upgraded gaming experience.

BEAUTY AND AWE

Have you seen Minnesota’s tallest waterfall, the 120-foot High Falls of the Pigeon River, located in Grand Portage State Park? All visitors can enjoy this dramatic canyonspanning waterfall, thanks to the short, barrier-free trail to the overlook. Craving more of a challenge? Hike to the summit of Mt. Rose for panoramic views of Lake Superior, Isle Royale, and the Susie Islands. Speaking of Isle Royale, you can reach this remote national park via Grand Portage ferry for a day trip or overnight adventure to remember. More: visitcookcounty.com/grandportage

BOUNDARY WATERS CANOE AREA WILDERNESS (BWCAW)

FACTS

Imagine a million acres of woods and water, virtually untouched since the glaciers melted and created over a thousand crystal-clear lakes. • The BWCAW was named one of the world’s “50 Places of a Lifetime” by National Geographic. • Cook County contains 48 entry points to the BWCAW. • The lakes, streams and rivers of the Boundary Waters form a seemingly endless chain of possible canoe routes— over 1,200 miles of them, in fact. • Within the BWCAW, there are 15 hiking trails, 2,000 designated campsites, and over 1,000 lakes. • Just across the Canadian border, in Ontario, sits like-sized Quetico Provincial Park. Together with the BWCAW, they form a sprawling, multimillion-acre wildland. • Iconic northern wildlife species that roam the Boundary Waters include timberwolf, moose, bear, lynx, deer and loon. • Minnesota’s highest point, Eagle Mountain at 2,301 feet, is located within the BWCAW. The trailhead is just minutes away from Grand Marais. • The BWCAW is open for year-round exploration. During the summer there is a quota permit per entry point that is required May 1 – September 30. Permits for summer entries are open for registration annually in January. More: visitcookcounty.com/bwcaw
