Rococo Ice Cream elevated its own high-end experience at the new Rococo Dessert Bar in Kennebunk.

TThere has been a LOT of movement in the dining scene this year, and honestly, all of it has been good.
This year we found lots to love, from the shrimp toast at the Little Barn at the White Barn Inn to the wood-fired pizza eaten at the bar at Wandby Landing to the steak frites at Chez Rosa to the tofu satay at Bandaloop to the absolute best creamed spinach at The Lost Fire to the braised pork and Johnny cakes at Bev’s Cafe.
There’s so many more tasty bites, in fact, that we’re getting full just thinking about it all! But in case you’re not hungry yet, let us tell you about the new and the delicious things that have been popping up here. So here are eight great foodie things that are happening in the Kennebunks:
First: The Kennebunks finally have sushi. And not just any old sushi, but the amazing experience that Rosella KPT brings, with its chef offerings, incredibly fresh seafood and sustainable choices.
Second: We have really awesome bagels. The lines will attest to the fact that KPT Bagels has found a home here – and a following.
Third: We have lots of wonderful ice cream options, but now we also have a dessert bar built around wonderful ice cream at Rococo Artisan Ice Cream. With its dreamy decor and sophisticated tastes, this is a welcome addition to our dessert offerings.
Fourth: Two words - drag brunch. It’s brunch. It’s a show. It’s brunch with a show, and only found on special dates at Via Sophia.
Fifth: We have some cool new options that have just arrived or are on the horizon, including tasty protein shakes and energy teas at KBK Protein Place; a new cupcake bakery coming to Lower Village; and delicious breakfast and lunch options at Bev’s Cafe on Kennebunk’s Main Street.
Sixth: Perennial favorite Alisson’s celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with a new look both in the back of house and front, but with the same great staff and menu that people love.
Seventh: The old Pilot House is gone, demolished in March. But long live the new, two-story Pilot House, with the same great staff and food but with killer views.
Eighth: The Spirit floating restaurant is floating no more, but still serving up food and cocktails in style, just now on dry land.
What ’ s new, improved
Both luxurious and whimsical, Rococo Dessert Bar elevates its scoop shop roots at its new location and space in the Federal Jack’s plaza in Lower Village, Kennebunk.
“From a space and customer experience perspective, it was about ‘breaking the mold’ being so visually, socially and culturally different from everything else in the Port that our customer experience is distinctive and memorable.”
Lauren Guptill, Rococo ownerNew, improved and

By Laura DolceWhen Rococo owner Lauren Guptill was looking for a new home for her award-winning ice cream shop, she thought about finding an area that was safer and had a little less vehicle traffic, and a place where her customers could relax.
Instead, she found a space that fed her imagination and allowed her to expand in a whole new direction.
At her new spot in the Federal Jack’s plaza, Guptill had enough room for both a scoop shop AND a dessert bar.
“My vision for the dessert bar was to create a dream space anchored in my Rococo brand philosophy that could offer a level above the scoop shop experience,” she said, adding that she’s reimagined her ice cream “in desserts, shakes & floats and cocktails.”
“From a personal perspective, it was about me creating a new channel for my own creativity as others in the business had started to feel stagnant,” she said. “From a space and customer experience perspective, it was about ‘breaking the mold’ being so visually, socially and culturally different from everything else in the Port that our customer experience is distinctive and memorable.”
and tasty in 2024
Guptill’s new space is both luxurious and whimsical, with pink marble, shining gold touches and soft-padded booths. She says it’s a far cry from the typical nautical decor you often find in Maine.
And Guptill has big plans for the two outside spaces.
“The front patio I am transforming into what I am calling a ‘Parisian garden party theme,’” she said, “and the side patio I am adding SWINGS! and that will be for the ice cream shop.”

Making his mark
Chef German Lucarelli already had a loyal following at The Lost Fire when he decided to add two new eateries to his empire last year: the upscale Ultramar in the space that was formerly Pier 77 and Casa SeventySeven Osteria in the former Ramp.
Guests have raved.
“This place was amazing! The service, location, ambiance and food were all above and beyond. Will be returning :)”
“The drinks were great, and the seafood paella was amazing! The clam chowder was excellent as were the three desserts we shared. Thank you!”

New on the Kennebunks dining scene
Continued from Page 7
“What a wonderful evening! Food and service outstanding!”
But while the eateries have been wellreceived, the location has not been without its challenges.
“Our biggest challenges have been the storm damage from winter storms and the construction on Pier Road,” said Lucarelli’s assistant, Kelly Murphy. “We are also still learning about how our restaurant flows through the high and off seasons.”
While the storm affected Casa Seventy-Seven, Lucarelli didn’t miss a beat, moving brunch and lunch upstairs to Ultramar while they cleaned up downstairs. Within days, Casa Seventy-Seven re-opened for guests.
Lucarelli isn’t letting any of the bumps in the road slow him down, though. This summer he plans to open his new gelato truck - Dos Elenas, named for his two grandmothers –right next to Ultramar.

Ali and Kevin Hannon opened Kport Bagel last year and quickly developed a loyal following.
People are lining up
No, that line wending its way across the boardwalk most mornings at the Morning Walk Cottages isn’t for a concert or a supersecret sale. It’s for those in-the-know who get on line early to snag one of the delicious bagels at KPort Bagels.
Since opening last year, demand hasn’t decreased. If anything, people want more bagels and in different flavors, which the owners have been happy to create.
Yes, there’s traditional salt and everything bagels, among others, but have you tried the rosemary olive oil or chocolate chip? Or the fantastic garlic bagel? And how about specialty cream cheese flavors like pesto?
“In our first year, KPort Bagel has focused on producing a reliable, quality product. Now that we feel like we have that down, we have started to expand on bagel and cream cheese
flavors,” said Alli Hannon, who owns the shop along with husband Kevin. “We recently added lox and some fresh veggies to the menu as toppings and are working towards expanding offerings even more in our limited space (think egg and lunch sandwiches).”
Whatever they add, it’s sure to be a hit, as the Hannons have developed a loyal – and hungry –following.
“Response from the town has been amazing, people often telling us it’s the best bagel they’ve ever had,” Hannon said, adding “they appreciate us bringing good quality bagels to the Kennebunk area and we have even had some people request we ship bagels (Texas, Arizona, Virginia to name a few state) or bring them back to family in New York.”
Now that’s high praise indeed.

New look, same Alisson’s favorites Restaurant Guide of the Kennebunks
Old favorite, new look
Alisson’s has seen a lot of change in its 50 years, but perhaps none lengthier or larger than the threeplus months of renovations that just finished.
“After 50 years it was time to update our kitchen,” said General Manager Ashley Padget. “We were working out of a service window that initially served about 200-300 people per day. We currently serve more than 1,000 meals a day! So we completely gutted our kitchen and food prep room (down to the foundation) as well as our storage areas and walk-in coolers. All of our systems and equipment are brand new, but our menu remains very close to the same.”
While the renovation was initially supposed to be just back of house, that plan evolved.
“Once we began the renovation we thought it would be a nice change for our loyal customers to see a minor facelift of our dining rooms as well,” Padget explained. “We are returning to our ‘pub’ roots with brick, warmer colors, new bar stools and lighting, and exciting changes to our upstairs room to make it feel more connected to our pub.”
Padget knows that it’s the food - and the wonderful staff - that keeps people coming back to
Don’t let the makeover at Alisson’s fool you, the Kennebunkport landmark will remain the same beloved fixture folks have enjoyed for generations – right donw to its signature lobster roll and chowder.
Alisson’s, so she said those things will be added to, not taken away.
“We have added some fun new sandwiches, burgers and entrees, as well as a variety of vegetarian items,” she said. “We also added a few more beer taps (from 23 to 26). Most importantly, our incredible staff returns! You will see all of the familiar faces.”
And some familiar services are returning, too.
“After we get our bearings with our new kitchen, we will bring back full takeout (phone, walk-in, online),” Padget said. “Available before summer!”
But don’t let any of the “newness” fool you. At its heart, Alisson’s will remain the same
beloved local fixture people have visited for generations.
“The core of what we do, and what we have always been, will never change,” Padget said. “We continue to be a casual local family-owned restaurant with excellent food, friendly service, reasonable prices and stellar beer offerings!”
