Katrina Katsarelis | EDITOR’S NOTE

Confessions of a Katy Magazine FUNatic Finding joy in the job while striving for excellence and innovation I confess I’m one of those people who jumps out of bed each morning, excited to go to work. My job is not always easy, but it is always interesting, fun, and entertaining. Before moving to Katy and starting Katy Magazine, I worked in the marketing departments of some of Silicon Valley’s high-tech companies. Although I worked for some great companies and met many talented people, I rarely got a chance to stretch my creative wings and find the joy in my job. Marketing semiconductors or speech recognition software just wasn’t very exciting or creative to me, no matter how I tried to spin it. At Katy Magazine, however, I get the pleasure of working with adorable kids, amazing families, inspirational people, community leaders, crazy coworkers, and sometimes even an occasional celebrity. Best of all, every day is different and I can always find a way to add a smidge of fun into everything we do. Case in point: Our wild and crazy brainstorming sessions. This is where we come up with every possible Katy idea we can for the upcoming issue. (Okay, I admit the photo is a wee bit staged. We don’t brainstorm with margaritas, but we really do bring our dogs to work sometimes.)

Katy Magazine’s production team during a recent “thinking cap” brainstorming session

Another way we make our workplace fun is by looking for any reason to dress up, accessorize, or have a contest. Halloween, Crazy Christmas Sweater Day, Royal Wedding Princess Day--you get the picture. (If you follow us on Facebook, you’ve seen the wacky photos posted on our FB page.) Even though we like to have fun, we still maintain a ‘work hard, play hard’ atmosphere and everyone at Katy Magazine strives to take their job to the next level through excellence and innovation. From up-and-coming design techniques, to Katy photo pictorials, to heartfelt stories of triumph, our goal is to produce a superior publication that’s like no other. Keeping Katy Magazine free to our community is important to us as well, and is only possible because of the local advertisers who have financially supported our dream for the past nine years. We hope our passion and dedication for Katy is evident throughout the pages of the magazine. We genuinely want you to be as proud of your hometown magazine as we are. Do something fun today!

Gynecologic oncology services now in Katy

T

he University of Texas MD Anderson Regional Care Center in Katy has expanded its services to include treatments of various gynecologic and reproductive cancers. Michael Bevers, M.D., and Nicole Fleming, M.D., board-certified gynecologic oncologists, recently joined the team at the Katy Regional Care Center. Bevers and Fleming will manage the diagnosis and surgical treatment of female patients with cancers of the reproductive organs, including uterine, ovarian and cervical cancers. They will collaborate with a team of surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, as well as nurses, dieticians, social workers and physical therapists all working together to provide customized care. I see my relationship with a patient as a partnership. As in, ‘I listen to you and you listen to me because we are going through this together.’ I want patients to know they always have my support. Michael W. Bevers, M.D., Gynecologic Oncologist

We really become a part of our patients’ lives and they become a part of ours. My love for women’s health, working with women and surgery inspire me to provide the best care. Nicole Fleming, M.D., Gynecologic Oncologist

Board-certified gynecologic oncologists Michael Bevers, M.D., and Nicole Fleming, M.D., work with a multidisciplinary team of specialists in Katy.

Other advanced MD Anderson treatment options available in Katy include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, clinical trials and support services. The compassionate care team also provides educational and emotional support to patients while guiding them through the team-based treatment planning process. The Katy Regional Care Center is located on the campus of CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital. Appointments are available and easy to schedule. For more information, visit FindYourMDAnderson.com or call 713-745-9940.

“MD Anderson is known for its team approach to fighting cancer, that’s why we want people to go there,” Fleming said. “To provide this level of care in a convenient, local setting is attractive to patients and families.” Early and accurate diagnosis of gynecologic cancers is important. Innovative treatment options available at MD Anderson include minimally invasive Da Vinci® robotic surgery, fertility-sparing surgeries and specialized care for women at high risk of gynecologic cancers.

Seven Lakes sophomore and recording artist Macy Medford proves you are never too young to pursue your dreams

On the cusp of stardom, 15-year old singer, songwriter, and Seven Lakes student is grateful for the support of the Katy community Written by Cherri Northcutt | Photography Courtesy of Macy Medford

For 15-year-old Macy Medford, life is a juggling act. Between her advanced placement classes at Seven Lakes High School, theater work, and her singing career, Macy doesn’t have a lot of free time. She recently took home the grand prize in the Dallas Songwriting Association contest for her single, “Just Me and You.” The song was #1 on Tween Pop Radio’s Top 40 charts in its first week of release. Macy was also nominated for Pop Artist of the Year at the Los Angeles Music Awards. While her music career is skyrocketing, Macy remains a down-to-earth Katy gal, committed to keeping her grades up and staying connected to the friends who have supported her along the way. A Star on the Rise

Born and raised in Katy, Macy has always enjoyed singing and performing. While in the second grade, she appeared in the title role of Annie in a production for the Children’s Arts Alliance in Houston. “In just five days, I had memorized the entire script and all the songs,” Macy remembers, “I knew right then, that’s what I wanted to do with my life.” From there, Macy sang and performed in talent shows and contests, even traveling to Los Angeles for meetings with talent scouts. In the seventh grade, Macy started writing her own music. “My first big break was a Disney commercial when I was 12,” Macy recalls.

Crazy ‘Bout You

In January 2012, Macy realized her dream when she released her first album Crazy ‘Bout You. “Recording was my favorite part of the whole process,” Macy shares, “We spent long

hours working from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. the next day.” During recording, Macy, her manager/co-writer Jonathan George, and the producer Anthony Mazza tried a variety of sounds, taking the time to get the recording just right. “It was the most creative process deciding how we wanted the songs to come off,” Macy says. From the album, her single “Just Me and You” went viral on Facebook and Twitter and debuted at #1 on Tween Pop Radio. “That first week,” Macy remembers, “I beat out Demi Lovato.” Macy made a music video for the song, which was filmed at Marilyn Monroe’s house in Los Angeles. Her musical style is fresh and upbeat with instruments like the ukulele and guitar. Macy describes her style as, “pop with a jazzy edge.” Her musical influences range from Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz to Nora Jones and Michael Bublé. “My favorite song of all time though, is ‘Let it Be’ by the Beatles,” Macy says.

“I knew r ight t hen, t hat’s w hat I wanted t o do wit h my life.”

Among her album tracks, Macy finds that adults enjoy the soft but soulful ballad “Stronger,” while her teen friends are partial to “Sidelines,” an edgy number with a dance beat. All of the music for the album is original.

Friends, Family, and Community Support

Macy is grateful to her friends and family for supporting her in her music career. They helped make her CD release party a success. “My friends passed out invitations in all their classes and made announcements at school,” she explains. Macy was surprised to see several of her teachers at the party. “Even teachers from elementary and junior high school showed up,” she says. Macy’s parents, Stacy and Terry Medford, have always supported Macy’s dreams. “My parents are awesome,” Macy shares, “always taking me to different appearances.” Her brothers, Trey and Grayson, bring friends to Macy’s performances to help cheer her on. “My brothers know all of my songs by heart,” she says. The Katy community has embraced Macy’s talent as well. “Several restaurants have offered to play my CDs,” Macy says. “I’ve loved playing at the Katy Rice Harvest Festival for the past five years.” Macy enjoys the sense of community in Katy. “It has a small town feel,” Macy says, “and all the people are really supportive.” Macy also appreciates that Katy has several good music and theater programs.

What happens next?

- Macy Medford

For now, Macy is concentrating on her school work and writing new songs. “I keep a pad of paper near my bed,” Macy shares, “so if I wake up at 3 a.m. with a lyric idea, I can write it down. Inspiration comes from what’s going on in my life; boys, changes, and everything I’m going through.” Macy plans to record a second album soon and continues to make appearances. Macy hopes that her music helps listeners feel empowered for everyday life. “One girl who gets my songs from iTunes said she listens to me every morning that it puts her in a good mood for the rest of the day,” Macy shares. “That’s the feeling I hope to give people.” KM

Katy Families

Katy couple raises their triplets, Londyn, Lance, and Layton with lots of love and laughter

On August 10 , 2011 Tim an d Laruen LeVrier welco med triplets Londyn, Lance, and La yton

Preparing for Three

High school sweethearts, Lauren and Tim jumped into full force planning mode to prepare for their new bundles. Lauren admittedly has a “type-A” personality and made organization a priority, while Tim made sure to support his wife wholeheartedly. “She was an incredible mom-to-be”, he says. “She never initiated a complaint.” Minus frequent contraction monitoring and doctor’s appointments, Lauren’s pregnancy was quite uneventful and the babies were model patients. During the course of the pregnancy they found out they were having two boys and one girl, and with Lauren’s teaching background she loved the idea of alliteration. So the “L” names were born. They named their little girl Londyn, and the boys Lance and Layton.

The Big Arrival

Without ever being forced onto strict bed rest, almost a mandate in a multiple pregnancy, she miraculously

Lauren LeVrier always knew her call in life was to be a mother, but after a devastating miscarriage when she was ten weeks along, she wondered if that dream would ever become a reality. A few months later, when she was seven weeks along in her second pregnancy, Lauren got the most exciting news of her life alongside her husband Tim that they were expecting not just one baby, not even two, but three.

carried the little ones to 34 ½ weeks. On August 10, 2011, the “L” triplets made their way into this world, with all but Londyn weighing over 4 lbs. With the exception of Lance, who needed some oxygen intervention, the rest were deemed perfectly healthy despite their prematurity. Even more astounding, after just eight days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Londyn was sent home, and three days later, her brothers followed. For parents who had prepared for weeks or even months to have their babies in the NICU, it was an amazing blessing to have them home so soon.

Home Sweet Home

Once the babies arrived home, Lauren and Tim were immediately surrounded by family and friends who were eager to help the new family of five. Friends created a care meal calendar and family members began rotating in throughout the days and nights. At times it even seemed like there were more helpers than babies according to Lauren’s mom, Carole Goddard.

Goddard even moved in with the family for three months and helped take care of the babies during the week, with Tim’s family taking over on the weekends. “Those first few months definitely had their challenges, but they were also filled with lots of joy for these precious miracles,” recalls Goddard. Lauren is deeply grateful for their families’ support and has been amazed how the babies have strengthened their bond. “With our family, it’s like God knew we needed more than one baby,” Lauren says. “They truly have reinvigorated both sides of our family and blessed each one of them.” It’s a sentiment her mom echoes, “Lauren has always been a bundle of energy and enthusiasm. When she and Tim found out they were having triplets, I kidded with her that God knew one or two babies wouldn’t be enough to keep her busy, and so He gave her three!”

“When I walk in that door after a long day of work it’s the best feeling in the world to see them light up when they see me.” - Tim LeVrier How Do They Do It?

All help aside, Lauren and Tim have still faced challenges in raising triplets. Tim works full-time to support the newly expanded family while Lauren stays home with the children. Bath time for the triplets is Tim’s daddy duty, so Lauren can rest in the evenings and it’s a role he relishes. “When I walk in that door after a long day of work it’s the best feeling in the world to see them light up when they see me,” shares Tim. Lauren keeps the brood organized by color coding everything, down to the bottles and pacifiers. She’s careful not to go overboard. She really tries to maintain a laidback home lifestyle for the children and laugh as much as possible. “This very well may be our last opportunity in raising babies,” Lauren says wistfully. Now the challenges have transitioned from getting babies fed and dressed to starting to take the babies places on her own, a feat in itself. Through it all, Tim and Lauren have remained a strong team, even allowing Lauren to go back and substitute at her beloved Kilpatrick Elementary once a week. They still have the support of their families all the way down to siblings, grandparents, and great grandparents. All take turns watching the little LeVriers so Lauren and Tim can enjoy one weekend a month to themselves. “My life is a lot different than a lot of our friends and that can be hard sometimes,” Lauren says. “But I get three times the hugs, three times the ‘mamas’ and three times the kisses. I feel so gratified and I’m doing exactly what God has planned for me and equipped me for.” KM MEAGAN CLANAHAN is a Katy wife and mom to twin toddlers. She loves meeting and writing about other inspirational parents of multiples like the LeVriers.

Bryan Finnesand, being dissatisfied with a traditional fitness regime, accepted the challenge of becoming a world-traveling mountain climber

Katy resident, Bryan Finnesand, climbs Annapurna, the tenth tallest mountain in the world, as a stepping stone to Mount Everest Written by Ella Hearrean

Annapurna, located in the Himalayas, is known as one of the most dangerous mountains to climb

Bryan Finnesand knows how to take on a challenge. When his wife, Kerri, encouraged him to begin running, he did – all the way to the finish of the 2011 Houston marathon. Next he set his sights on biking and completed the 100-mile Katy Flatland Century Ride and the 2011 Kona Eastside Triathlon. And when he spotted a shirt about triathlons afterwards that read, “Because life is too easy, and Everest is too far away,” he couldn’t help but consider climbing the world’s tallest mountain. “I’ve learned I can do anything if I put my mind to it,” Finnesand says.

Preparing for the Climb

So the 41-year-old novice climber decided to face Mount Everest. In late September of 2012, Finnesand packed his gear, took off ten days from his position as regional director of a medical imaging company, and boarded a flight to Qatar, a country bordering Saudi Arabia. He’d spent the last seven months researching and training for an aggressive trek to Nepal Everest Base Camp. He’d poured over books, lugged a 60-pound backpack around Stephen F. Austin State Park, and hiked Matterhorn Peak in California. “I wanted to train at the gym, but my wife vetoed the idea of me with a backpack on a stair climber at Life Time Fitness,” he laughs.

Unexpected Hurdles

His plans came to a screeching halt when Finnesand had landed in Kathmandu’s International Airport and he learned that a plane headed to Lukla, the flight he was scheduled to take the next day, had crashed, killing all 19 people on board. “Lukla Airport is one of the most dangerous in the world, and it shook me,” he says. When Lukla shut down, Finnesand faced a dilemma: continue to wait for the chance to trek Everest, or explore another mountain. He says, “research taught me that much of an expedition is out of my control. I had to be willing to make changes.”

When his Sherpa guide suggested trekking Annapurna, the tenth tallest mountain, Finnesand didn’t hesitate. The men headed to Pokhara, Nepal. “I thought Nepal was this cold and barren place, but it was lush, warm, and beautiful,” he recounts. Rice patties dotted the mountainside, schoolchildren yelled from playgrounds, and shepherds directed mules. “After the first day, my heart rate monitor said that I’d burned 4,000 calories,” says Finnesand. “By nightfall, I was physically and mentally exhausted.” The travelers rested at a primitive bed and breakfast. They ate yak curry and slept on plain wooden beds with thin mattresses. “I loved the food,” raves Finnesand. “I’ve always enjoyed trying new things and meeting new people.” When he woke early the next morning to a mountain lit up by the sun outside his window, he said in awe, “It was the most amazing view of the trip.”

Breathtaking Beauty

Finnesand continued to wind his way up the mountain over the next several days, creaking past streams on makeshift bridges and stopping to help two lost trekkers. He relied heavily on his poles, while his guide and porter seemed unfazed. “The sherpa wore flip flops and had his hands in his pockets,” he laughs. The beauty of the mountains constantly surprised him. “I was breathing heavily and concentrating on each step, but every once in a while, the clouds parted, and the mountain was there in front of me,” he shakes his head. “The snowcaps were whiter than white, a different color than what we know. It was magnificent. Indescribable.” As the sun moved, Finnesand says the beauty of the mountains shifted. “Every hour they looked dramatically different.”

The Adventure is the Journey

He says his decision to adjust his plans was the right one. “I got so much more out of my expedition,” he marvels. In addition to exploring the quiet mountainside of Annapurna,

Finnesand walked through Kathmandu, a poor, noisy, populated city, and toured intricately carved temples. “A trekker once told me that climbing is about safety first, then about fun, learning, and – lastly -- reaching the summit of a mountain. If I’d put all of my expectations on reaching the summit, I’d have been disappointed,” Finnesand says. “The fun was in the preparation.”

Annapurna

He reflects with satisfaction on his adventure and its symbolism of life. “I have to be ready for anything and willing to adapt. It’s all about the journey,” he says. “The ride is the ultimate experience.” Finnesand is happy to be back at home with his wife and 4-year-old son, Broden. A self-made adventurer, he says he’s ready to begin brainstorming his next adventure, adding with a laugh, “Just as soon as I get over this jet lag.” KM

Tips and tricks for creating the ultimate party

Written by Kirsten Ham

Birthday parties were designed to make children feel like kings, or queens, for the day. Katy parents pull out all the stops when it comes to their celebrations. Birthday party themes can take a lot of work out of planning a birthday party. Choosing a theme makes decorating, games, and even the food much easier to pull together. From pirates to princesses and many more in between, we consulted the experts on how to put together themes that will create a wonderland for your child.

A Thrilling Theme

From Angry Birds to SpongeBob, parties often root from the popular movie of the season or the child’s favorite shows and games. Katy mom Jean Quinton prefers customized parties. “The first thing I like to do is document the child’s interests for that year,” Quinton says. “I pick their birthday party theme based off what they really love. I also make sure to keep it age appropriate.” Entertainment is key and can easily play into your chosen theme. “You can plan a successful party by being creative and having all kinds of activities for the kids to do,” mother Amy Dodd says. “Edible details are fun and letting kids design their own treats is also unique. It’s important to have food and snacks that cater to not only the children but the adults as well.”

“We’ve seen a growing rise in Texans parties,” says Vicky Peek with Tilt Studio. “The red and blue is easy to do and works well with all age groups.” Making memories with your child is the most important aspect of any birthday celebration. “Tyler’s favorite birthday party was Mike the Knight,” says Katy mom Melissa Annis. “It was a lot of fun and he still talks about it. Next year, we’re going with a swim party.”

Little Extras

The little details incorporated into a party can make all the difference for the child, parents, and their guests. Be sure you find a venue or theme that is accommodating as well as fun. “Every party receives their own party hostess,” explains Young. “They do everything from selecting bowling balls, to helping children plug in their names, or serving food. It’s wonderful because the party moms can actually enjoy their child’s party instead of running around doing everything.” Several local venues furnish invitations, food, beverages, balloons, and plenty of activities for your children.

“I love birthday parties because of the yummy cake everyone eats.”

- Anson Stuckly, Age 4

“We really work with our clients,” says Peek. “Even though we have packages in place, we will work with their goals and create complete customization.” Themed parties can provide more than entertainment and sugar for your guests. “Tiger-Rock also incorporates defense education into the party. Kids have a lot of fun but they are also learning,” shares Furman. Birthday parties are hosted by high-ranking, immensely talented, black belt instructors. In addition, each guest leaves the party having earned a white belt. Goodie bags of all types and sizes are still found at today’s Katy parties. “When parents bring in party favors they do it really well, sparing no expense,” says Peek. “One of the neatest ones I’ve seen was customized water bottles filled with treats.”

Lasting Memories

Cheesecake filled with natural banana slices topped with blackberry homemade sauce.

If their birthday isn’t their favorite holiday, it probably ranks in the top three. Make party planning fun by involving them in the process. Let your cutie help pick themes, colors, or even a favorite game. Enjoy the party with your child. These are memories that will remain with you both for a lifetime. KM KIRSTEN HAM enjoys being on the editorial team for Katy Magazine. Her favorite birthday party was a Nancy Drew theme where she had to find all the presents using clues.

Klatt Band Family The

Local family spreads joy across Katy by sharing the gift of music

W

When Doug and Wendy Klatt moved their family from Chicago to Texas two years ago, they had no idea that they would soon form a family band. Now, the Klatt’s perform all over Katy and Houston at nursing homes and charitable events. It’s a unique way they have found to give back to the community. “I never envisioned this for my family, it’s been an amazing experience,” Wendy says.

very vibrant woman but I saw how quickly her spirits were declining.” Wendy asked Doug and the girls to play for her. Several residents gathered to hear the music and the effect was immediate. “It was such a happy reaction,” Wendy shares. “They loved the music and seeing the children.” In Katy, the Klatts work with ARTreach, a nonprofit arts education outreach program, as well as with the Katy Cultural & Arts Alliance. Through these charitable groups, the Klatt Family Band finds a variety of places to share their music, from retirement homes to art galleries.

Music as a Way of Life

The Klatt Family band consists of Doug on guitar and their two oldest daughters, guitar player Vanessa age 12, and Elena age 10, on piano and violin. Both girls join their father in singing a variety of old favorites mixed with new original music. Doug also plays the guitarron, a Mexican folk instrument with a bass sound. For the Klatt’s, music has always been a way of life. Doug Klatt, a Music Director at Western Academy in Houston, brought up their four children in a musical environment. “Since the kids were born I’ve been teaching them about instruments and singing,” Doug shares. All of the Klatt children have studied violin at the Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, including Lucia, age 8 and 6-year-old Xavier.

Entertainment for Katy’s Elderly

Wendy remembers the first time the group played together at an assisted living facility. “My grandmother was in a nursing home until she was 96,” Wendy recalls, “She was a

Doug, Wendy, Vanessa, Elena, Lucia, and Xavier Klatt have found that music is more than just a hobby; it’s a way of life

“Part of our mission,” Doug says, “is to bring a sense of joy and love to the people we play for.” Each appearance includes familiar favorites like “Amazing Grace” or “When the Saints Go Marching In.” “This is nice for Alzheimer patients,” Doug explains. “They’ll be tapping their feet and sometimes singing along.”

A Heartfelt Melody

The Klatt Family Band also weaves in some newer original songs, in a folk/Americana style with melodic guitar harmonies. Doug’s music has a positive hopeful message. “Music is something that can affect people on a deep spiritual level in a way that other things can’t,” Doug shares. “It has the power to move your soul.” Of all her father’s songs, Elena’s favorite is “Devil’s Mirror.” “I like the story, everyone was happy and the devil

wanted to ruin it and he broke a mirror,” she says. The ballad, based on The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson, is one of many pieces Doug has written that was inspired by children’s stories. “Sometimes I take fairy tales and turn them into songs that carry a message,” Doug says. His song “Princess” is a retelling of Snow White. Vanessa especially enjoys performing “Princess,” “Crimson Sun,” and “Mystery Road.”

Easter Egg Hunt at the Jersey Barnyard in La Grange, Texas. The band has also enjoyed playing at several locations around Katy including the Salt & Pepper Restaurant, the Babaloo Art Gallery, and the Katy Jazz Festival KCAA art showing. What does the future hold for the Klatt’s? “For now, the main thing is having a healthy family, serving the community, and creating as much beautiful music as we can,” Doug says. KM

Staying Strong through Music

Being in the band has definitely brought the family closer together. Even the little ones get involved, visiting with the elderly before and after each performance. “Lucia and Xavier are good at working the crowd, it makes people smile,” Wendy adds. Playing together has helped educate the Klatt children about working as a team. “It’s good that they’re learning how to give,” Doug says, “sharing our music is the main gift that we can give to others.”

Giving the Gift of Music

The Klatt’s passion is to bring music and hope to the elderly. They have performed at several Katy area facilities including Autumn Grove Alzheimer’s Care, Always Home Assisted Living, Sunrise Assisted Living Center, the Heritage Park Nursing Home, and Grace Care Center. The Klatt Family Band has also found success playing venues such as the Bluebird Café in Nashville, Tennessee and at an

State Representative

Local legislator and physician enjoys serving others in the Katy–Fort Bend area Written by Mary Hogan | Select Photography Courtesy of Dr. John Zerwas

Recently reelected to the Texas House of Representatives, Dr. John Zerwas balances serving the residents of District 28 with being a practicing anesthesiologist and president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He loves spending time with his wife, Cindy, and family and has set a strong example in the Katy-Fort Bend community for helping others. “My wife and I are most proud of seeing our children grow up in the Katy-Fort Bend area and go on to find their lives and career paths,” he shares.

“I came to realize there was really a great deal of vigilance and work on the political front to protect patients and the practice of medicine.” - Dr. John Zerwas

Finding His Path in Life

As one of five children, Dr. Zerwas was born in Tulsa, OK but moved across the country several times due to his father’s work with Gulf Oil. During his high school years, his family finally settled in Houston. Dr. Zerwas graduated from Bellaire High School before earning degrees at the University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine. “Probably the strongest connection I made to the area was meeting my wife, Cindy, as a junior in high school,” Dr. Zerwas shares. The couple recently celebrated 34 years of marriage. Growing up, Dr. Zerwas says his parents instilled solid morals and a strong work ethic, which he still values today. “My dad never said, ‘You need to do this or go into this career or that,’” explains Dr. Zerwas, adding, “I grew up with a sense that hard work would always pay off and was also something that was extremely gratifying.”

He is grateful for Cindy’s support throughout all of his endeavors. “My wife is the absolute foundation of anything I’ve done,” Dr. Zerwas shares. “She’s always been there for me 100 percent, even when we were raising the kids.”

Pursuing a Career in Medicine

Dr. Zerwas describes himself as having a strong sense of service to others, a desire to be impactful in whatever situation he’s currently facing, and possessing a healthy dose of humility. All three of these qualities led him down the path of becoming a physician. He started out pursuing a residency in surgery, before making the decision to become an anesthesiologist. Rep. John Zerwas and his wife Cindy at the Katy area Chamber of Commerce Gala

“I got partway down the road and realized the thing I enjoyed the most was being in the operating room,” Dr. Zerwas explains, adding, “Anesthesiology plays a major role in medicine and is one of those practices that is somewhat esoteric,” he adds.

As he was finding his path in life, he also looked to his teachers for guidance and support. “There were a couple of teachers who really challenged me, took an interest in me, and gave me the sense of confidence that I needed in order to pursue pre-medicine,” Dr. Zerwas says.

A Place to Call Home

Having completed his medical school residency at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Dr. Zerwas and his family decided to move back home to the Houston area. He began practicing at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and found it very convenient to live in the Katy-Fort Bend area. “Living in this area allowed us to enjoy more of the small community atmosphere, but at the same time, we could tap into the vast resources Houston offered,” he shares.

Putting Family First

As a father of four grown children – three sons and a daughter – and a grandfather of two, Dr. Zerwas makes family a priority in the midst of a busy schedule. “Being a dad is incredibly satisfying,” he shares. “Through every phase, it was an adventure and the greatest of fun. It’s really fun to see the kids grow up, find themselves, and still be there for them as a family. My wife has been extremely good about reminding us that even though the kids grow up and find their own way, we won’t ever stop being a family.” Just like his father encouraged him growing up, Dr. Zerwas focused on instilling strong values in his children and letting them choose their own career paths. “I certainly hope I instilled having a good, strong work ethic and character, that the sky’s the limit, and that when you choose to have a family, commit yourself wholly to that family – the return on that is enormous,” he says.

They enjoyed how friendly and inviting everyone was in the community. “We just found people were locating to this area for the same reasons we were: to raise a family and to enjoy the great schools and hometown environment,” says Dr. Zerwas.

Joining the Political Front

After practicing medicine for many years, Dr. Zerwas began assuming an advocacy role with the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and American Society of Anesthesiologists. At the same time, he also was medical partners with Dr. Kyle Janek, who served in the Texas Legislature. “I came to realize there was really a great deal of

vigilance and work on the political front to protect patients and the practice of medicine,” recalls Dr. Zerwas, adding, “I had that awareness of the value there is by having somebody who understands your profession sit in the lawmaking body.” In 2006, when the opportunity presented itself to run for the Texas House, Dr. Zerwas rose to the challenge. “Our children had grown up and moved out of the house, and I had some time to devote to it,” he shares. “Cindy and I found it was an honorable thing to do.” He is thankful for the support of both his family, and staff members with his anesthesiology practice and legislative office.

Serving District 28

Dr. Zerwas enjoys the friendships and relationships that come from serving the people of District 28. “I don’t know of any other opportunity that allows you to meet so many people and engage in conversations about so many different issues,” he says.

conversations to understand issues better and advocate for the residents of District 28,” says Dr. Zerwas. He finds much motivation in the opportunity to be able to impact change in a positive way. “In the legislative world, I end up focusing a lot on healthcare issues and find it gratifying to participate on a large stage that can impact how healthcare is delivered,” he says.

Grateful to Be Able to Give Back

Over the years, Dr. Zerwas’ love of serving others has continually led toward new ways to give back. He encourages others to get involved any way they can. “Anybody who has opportunities to serve publicly, whether it’s on the city council or the school board, never discount your ability to do that,” he says. “At the end of the day, we need citizens to step up and do these kinds of things. It can have a tremendous impact if done with the right sort of goals and focus.” KM

Some of the biggest concerns he has encountered among constituents center around providing foundational education and higher education programs, ensuring the economy is strong, and a focus on public safety. “As a representative, I have the opportunity to engage in

Space Filling Furnishings

An oversized sectional and billiard

Everything is bigger in Texas and that goes for spacious Texas homes. Thanks to a healthy economy, available acreage, and low interest rates, many Katyites are buying a lot of space for not a lot of money. The challenge for Texas homeowners then becomes furnishing large open floor plans in a way that is functional, beautiful, and pleasing to the eye.

Hang ‘Em High

Dark, wrought iron accents and stair rails placed near the top of the room help fill what would otherwise be an overabundance of wall whitespace.

KATY FAMILIES

The British and Expat Families Group of Katy offers general advice and support for non-natives, plus a bit of fun

B

Written by Julie Estep | Select Photography by Juliana Evans

Between the Royal Wedding and the London Summer Olympics, America has recently been hit with a British Invasion of pop culture. But to some Katyites, the UK represents far more than the land of Big Ben and Fish ‘n’ Chips; it’s home. And when home feels far away, the British and Expat Families Group of Katy is there to help them adjust to life across the pond.

Oil Industry Boom Brings the Brits

The booming oil industry has brought an influx of British employees and their families to Houston. Vanessa Heintz moved to Katy in 2008 with her husband and children, and that October founded the British and Expat Families Group with friends Micky Jukes and Jane Barlow who have since returned overseas. The group was created as a means to help other transplants adjust to a relocated life far from friends and family. “When you first come over it’s such a culture shock, you need a support group,” says Amber Slaven, who moved

from Scotland to Katy three years ago and now serves as organizer for the group. “Most people say it’s been a lifeline.” News of the group quickly spread by word of mouth. Coorganizer of events, Sam Richards from the south coast of England, recalls tagging along to an event with Barlow before joining. The group, which consisted of only about 30 people last year, now has 94 members and is continuing to grow. Members range in age from four months old to 72 and hail from the UK, Australia, South Africa, Norway, and Singapore.

Royally Fun Outings

The group hosts regular activities such as play groups, coffee mornings, ladies’ nights out, and family outings, as well as pub quizzes and garden parties—any excuse to come together and recreate British cuisine like bubble and squeak or bangers and mash. And when their native cuisine takes its toll, there is “Exfat,” a group that weighs in together.

Finlay Slaven, Ben Heintz, Karen Twist, Amber Slaven, Amy Richards, Beth Twist, Niall Slaven, Vanessa Heintz, Maddy Heintz, Sam Richards, and Ben Richards enjoy participating in the fellowship offered by the Expat Families Group

As a group they watched the royal wedding in Richards’ decorated backyard with about 100 guests. And this past June, they commemorated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by hosting their first formally organized event at Willow Fork Country Club. In addition to celebrating traditional British holidays like the Grand National horse race and Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday), they also organize holiday parties. “Holidays like Thanksgiving and 4th of July can be quite lonely,” says Richards. “You really notice the lack of family during Christmas.”

Acclimating to Katy

Fun and games aside, the group helps those who are new to the area get socially acclimated. For example, “understanding the health care system was a difficult part of the move,” Richards, an ICU nurse who has been here for three years explains. “A few people have had babies over here,” says Heintz. “And that can be hard because their families are far away, so we provide a pseudo-family.” Also in need of support are the expat children who didn’t grow up being quite as involved with competitive school

activities like football or cheerleading. “There’s a more positive environment here as far as encouragement and trying your hardest,” says Heintz, “but as an outsider, it can be frustrating when it’s difficult to get in on the action.” Also, teenagers who would be considered adults capable of making their own decisions in the UK at 18, have to rely on their parents for more things in suburban America, so it can be especially challenging for them to settle in. As for the wives, “a lot of us can’t actually work here because we came over for our husbands’ jobs,” says Slaven. “We do a lot of volunteer work, so that is how we bring our skills into the community.” As far as philanthropic work goes, the group finances the schooling for a family in Zimbabwe and is looking for a local charity that is in need of support. Heintz, from northern Wales, adds “we want to demonstrate that we wish to make a difference in Katy.”

The Best of Both Worlds

Though members of the group still miss British food, pubs, friends, and family, they love Katy’s spacious homes, activities for children, and reasonably priced eateries. “The

local amenities and swimming pools are a real treat for a British person,” says Heintz. “Texans are very friendly,” she says. “We’ve really been welcomed into the community.” So rather than just celebrating all things foreign, the British and Expat Families Group celebrates the best of both worlds. Inspirational Katy Kid

Katy’s Little Ally McCollam, an outgoing third grader at Griffin Elementary always keeps a smile on her face and doesn’t let Down syndrome slow her down

DANCER

STUDEN

T

FRIEND Written by Cherri Northcutt

Like many Katy kids, Ally McCollam, age 9, is a super involved student whose favorite subject is music. She takes ballet and gymnastics lessons, plays soccer, and enjoys singing in musicals at school. She’s the oldest child in the family and enjoys playing with her brother Shane, age 6, and her 17-month-old baby sister Lilly. And like many other children, Ally says “My favorite thing to do at home is play outside.” However, there is one thing that distinguishes her from her peers at Griffin Elementary. Ally was born with Down syndrome. Down syndrome is the most commonly known genetic condition and occurs when an individual is born with a full or partial extra chromosome. About 6,000 babies in the U.S. are born with Down syndrome each year. Traits of Down syndrome may include low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a deep crease across the palm. “It was difficult to hear that diagnosis at the time,” says Ally’s mother Maite McCollam. “I was in recovery from a C-Section and this was hard to accept.” The doctors suspected that Ally had Down syndrome because of low muscle tone and an eye slant. She also has a heart defect but so far hasn’t needed surgery.

Playing Alongside Her Peers at Griffin

The outgoing third grader learns and plays alongside other students in a general education classroom. “We are firm believers in inclusion, where Ally is not segregated from the other kids,” says Maite. At Griffin, Ally has daily math and speech instruction but spends the rest of the day with her class. Her parents find that being in a general education class aids Ally both socially and academically and helps with her behavior. “We are very blessed to be at Griffin. The kids, the teachers, and the coaches have been fabulous,” Maite shares. Gaining acceptance from others is a constant challenge for children with Down syndrome. “We want people to treat

“What I love the most about Griffin Elementary are the teachers.”

The McCollam’s also found social acceptance in the community when they moved to Katy in January 2010 and became involved in the Down Syndrome Association of Houston and its Katy Community Group. The McCollam’s are committed to doing everything they can to help Ally be strong and independent. “Every person is unique,” Maite says, “people with Down syndrome have something to offer society and should be respected.” She wants others to realize that, like everyone else, individuals with Down syndrome have feelings, likes and dislikes, and distinct personalities.

“Things are harder for Ally,” Maite shares. “She has sensory integration issues so she needs a lot of sensory input to help her wake up and get ready for the day.” After that, Maite walks to school with Ally and her brother Shane.

Every year, the National Down Syndrome Society produces a video presentation to showcase the lives of children and adults with Down syndrome. The video is shown on the jumbo screen in Times Square in New York City, kicking off the Down Syndrome Awareness Month. This year, the presentation featured a touching photo of Ally McCollam, just prior to her performance in Stephanie’s Dance Studio One’s production of The Nutcracker.

Maite says Ally has an outgoing personality and has several playmates at school and in her neighborhood. “Just having that acceptance means so much,” Maite says. With her winning smile and quick hugs, it doesn’t take long for people to warm up to Ally. KM

Ally was excited to be part of the Times Square presentation. She and her family watched the live footage via webcam. “Being on the video was cool and fun,” Ally says. “I wanted everyone to see my picture.”

After the death of her husband, Katy author Priscilla Boos’ book chronicles her dark journey through profound grief and loneliness Written by Noreen Stavinoha

A former Navyman standing 6’3” with a charming smile and irresistible wit, Bill Boos captured Pricilla’s heart from their first date in January of ‘71. Pricilla’s light hearted personality and compassion for others led to Bill’s proposal on only their second date.

Nine months after Bill and Priscilla Boos first met on a blind date, the two were married

102 • KATY MAGAZINE Visit KatyMagazine.com for Katy jobs, events, news, and more.

Both had a viable sense of humor and enjoyed immense laughter throughout their 39 years of marriage. “Bill had a quick wit that was unmatched and he kept us laughing ‘till the very end,” she says. Family and friends enjoyed witnessing the playful banter between the couple and admired them for their gracious spirits. Boos always prided herself on her thirst for life; if she was knocked down, she’d pick herself back up and keep on going. But when Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease took the life of her husband, Boos fell hard and discovered it was next to impossible to get back up. She soon realized she couldn’t do it herself so she enlisted the help of a grief counselor and a Yorkshire terrier puppy named Buddy Rose. The puppy was recommended by Boos’ counselor after a particularly bad episode in her grieving and proved to be her best antidote to depression. “She saved my life,” says Boos.

Inspired by a Dream

Revisiting the torrent of emotions and events surrounding her husband’s death while writing the book was no doubt challenging, but it was one of those events that gave her the title for her manuscript. Bill had a dream one night that he was in a beautiful town so filled with love and enchanting music, he presumed it was heaven. He was escorted by a spirit he couldn’t see but he could talk to, who showed him around. In the center of town was a bakery where people were constantly bringing baked goods in and out without exchanging money. “When you come,” he told his wife when he woke up, “meet me in front of the bakery. I’ll be waiting for you.” “I’ve been told my whole life, even as a child, that I was a very good writer,” shares Boos, “so I knew I had the ability. I really just started by thinking I would leave something for my grandchildren and it grew from there. Once I started writing, it just flowed.” The book was actually finished in six months. She had family and friends read the manuscript, and they all agreed it should be published. Most important among the readers was her brother, whom she knew would be totally honest in his opinion. When he gave the go-ahead, she knew she was on the right track, but found herself procrastinating instead of getting it to the publisher. Something was missing, and it took some introspection on her part to figure that out. Finally she realized there was another chapter that hadn’t been written.

A Wife’s Journey

“My book is about life taking a sharp turn onto a road I never flagged on my road map of life when my husband became very ill. After he died, I journeyed through the Valley of the Shadow of Death where I learned about fear, pain, and darkness, but I learned about God’s amazing love and care. I worked hard to fight my way through that horrific place, and I did come out of it. The book is inspiring and contains a positive message.”

About the Author

Priscilla Boos grew up in Long Island, New York, but relocated to Texas, in the early 1980s with her husband, Bill, and their two young children. Priscilla is a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist through the Grief Recovery Institute of Sherman Oaks, California. Now widowed, she lives in Katy, Texas. Priscilla Boos hopes to help othe rs rebuild from tragedy through her inspirational book

Boos hadn’t yet cleaned Bill’s closet, and she knew that had to be part of her story. Once it was done and the chapter written, she asked the chaplain at Texas Children’s Hospital where she works to read it. The chaplain remarked that it was probably the most important chapter in the book because that is the most difficult chore for families who have suffered loss. Thus affirmed, Boos shipped the manuscript off to Crossbooks, a division of LifeWay Publishing.

Special Bonds

The recollections in Meet Me at the Bakery include some important lessons for readers who are facing impending or recent loss. One aspect that stands out is the honesty with which the family dealt with their situation. Bill’s impending death was never treated like an unmentionable topic. Even their young granddaughters were told that Meet Me at the Bakery is available through retailers such as amazon.com and lifeway.com. their beloved Poppy was terminally ill and all their questions were answered. Bill had a special bond with his youngest granddaughter, Tina. They spent many hours together eating Blue Bell ice cream and watching SpongeBob, he was her “buddy”. Upon learning he was going to die, she announced she would never again watch SpongeBob. When he learned of this, Bill told her that after he was gone, he wanted her to continue watching that show because he’d be watching from heaven and it would make him happy. Tina was in the room when her beloved Buddy took his last breath, then she left the room. When her mother found her, she was in her room watching TV. When asked what she was doing, Tina replied, “Buddy said I should watch SpongeBob when he died.”

“What we had together was so very special and I am forever grateful for that.” -Priscilla Boos

Full Circle

Boos wants readers to know that it is possible to come back from that deep state of grief that occurs with the loss of a spouse. She talks freely now about the memories that she cherishes about her husband’s life and the things that helped her keep her sanity. The help she received from her grief counselor, along with fellow Katyites, family, and friends, has come full circle and led to receiving her own certification as a grief recovery specialist. She takes immense pride in helping others get through difficult times on that personal level as well as with her book. “What we had together was so very special,” Boos recalls of her marriage to Billl. “I am forever grateful for that.” KM EDITOR’S NOTE: Katy Magazine would like to thank Delicias Del Contry for lending us their facility to capture the beautiful photography for this story. People of Passion

Giving Teens

Tools for Life Katy author, wife, mother, and mentor establishes ‘Tools 4 Life’ programs that empowers incarcerated youth to turn their lives around

Kelly Litvak felt a calling to work with and encourage at-risk teenagers, providing them hope for the future

Written by Meagan Clanahan

To say that Executive Director Kelly Litvak is passionate about the non-profit “Tools 4 Life” organization would be an understatement. She is a woman with seemingly boundless energy who lives and breathes to save one at-risk teenager at a time; offering them hope, guidance, and oftentimes, a gentle push to get them on the straight and narrow.

Inspirational Scrapbooking

In 2001, Litvak was operating a successful home scrapbooking business where clients would bring her shoeboxes of pictures for her to create beautiful keepsakes. One day, she received a call from a former client that would change the direction of her life. The woman wanted to put together a scrapbook to encourage and educate atrisk teenagers, hoping they would be inspired after seeing themselves on those pages. She focused on creating a digital image book for teens, filled with powerful biblical scriptures as well as educational resources on topics such as cyber bullying, abstinence, and underage drinking. The initial plan was to release a universal “Tools 4 Life” book that anyone could pick up or go online

to upload their child’s picture into the digital images for a personalized edition. The idea took off among area churches and charities, and Litvak knew she was on to something.

Positive Messages of Love

A few years later, Litvak rolled out the first “Tools 4 Teens” eight week program at a local middle school. When the students created their customized scrapbooks with Godly messages, they began to see themselves in a new and positive way that improved their self-esteem. At the end of the inaugural program, the school found that almost all the students that took part improved academically, showed up for school, and had increasingly better behavior. Inspired by that success, Litvak’s team began contacting hospitals and other organizations to share the program.

Feeling As Though They Matter

Soon after, Litvak introduced the program to juvenile offenders through the Harris County Leadership Academy. “As I saw these children, children in orange jumpsuits, I just knew this is where God had called me; where He knew I could make the biggest impact.” She used the same recipe of scrapbooking for the prisoners and was shocked by their enthusiasm to create their projects. Inmates saw Litvak and her mission team as people who cared enough to spend time with them. In Litvak’s eyes, underneath these offender’s tough facades and tattooed bodies were children who just wanted to feel like they mattered.

Making a Dramatic Impact

Today, after each life lesson presentation, the inmates and Litvak’s team break up into small groups to do their scrapbooking work. It’s during this time that the team has the most dramatic impact on these young lives. They are able to sit down with the kids, discover what’s happening in their world, and understand their inner-most feelings in a non-confrontational way. Litvak says she’s not interested in why they are incarcerated; she only wants to know what their plans are for moving forward. “It’s done. It’s happened, you can’t change it. It is just a chapter in your life. It does not have to define your whole book.” Week after week, the prisoners began to open up to the team. Many have come to accept Christ into their hearts and make plans for what they will do once they are released. Just as importantly, the recidivism rate, or the rate of reoffending, among the program participants is just 25 percent, compared with the Harris County average of 70 percent. “I am so convinced that they can overcome their situation inside and outside of these walls. Each one has potential,” says Litvak. MEAGAN CLANAHAN is a Katy wife and mom who loves to write in her “free” time. She believes Katyites have some of the most generous hearts and attitudes of service around.

PROFILEs OF STRENGTH

Katy Mom Kristi Wees

How this busy mother of two juggles work and family while navigating the ups and downs of raising a child with mitochondrial disease

Staying Positive

Kristi Wees and her daughter Ashlynn, age 3, who doctors suspect has mitochondrial disease

I rely on the strength of my support system; my husband, my son, my family, and my friends who are there to remind me that it is possible to dance in the rain. Keeping connected to my special interests such as crafts, staying active, and helping others, helps to channel the chaos and lemons of many overwhelming days into lemonade. Somedays, I just focus on putting one foot in front of the other, taking babysteps to get us all through it.

By Kirsten Ham

Natural “Mom Gifts”

I think one of my God-given gifts is my ability to interpret and put complex, scientific, medical, and genetic concepts into understandable terms. Prior to becoming a mom I spent a number of years in a laboratory and in graduate school for chemistry. This knowledge and ability has not only helped out our family, but I hope that it has also helped others.

“I don’t see myself as a super mom. I’m just a mom who has been blessed and chosen to care for a child with super unique needs and challenges.” - Kristi Wees

A Renewed Perspective

I once had an ideal in my mind of what I wanted my life and family to look like, but this journey has taught me that what we envision our lives to be is not always the plan that is laid out for us. My new expectation is that my family feel safe, secure, and loved. Material things don’t seem to matter as much as they once did.

Advice for Other Parents

Always trust your gut intinct and remember that you know your child better than anyone else on this earth, so you must always be their advocate. You are the one who is more qualified and has more experience for that advocacy role than any doctor, teacher, counselor, therapist, coach, or caregiver. If something feels wrong to you, it probably is, go with your gut, do your research, and never stop asking questions and thinking for yourself. KM

What is Mitochondrial Disease?

The Rough Times

My daughter experiences many episodes of irritability and pain, times when she is inconsolable and sometimes reckless. During those periods, I hold her very tightly in a bear hug, the deep pressure on her joints can help calm her, and I sing as loud as she is screaming, “You Are My Sunshine.” Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t but when she calms, and is later playing with her dolls and pretending to take care of them and I hear her sing this to them, I know that she must find some comfort in this ritual, though it is difficult on us both while in the moment.

The Challenges

One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the medical world of specialists trying to get her help and lessen her pain and symptoms, all while trying to search for the root of what was causing her distress.

Mitochondria are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less and less energy is generated, causing cell injury and cell death. Some people can live fairly normal lives with mitochondrial disease while others are severely affected, and do not survive past the teen years.

Giving the Gift

of Hope

Mikaela Aschoff collapsed at her first Homecoming dance, but doctors had no idea what was wrong with her. After a series of tests, she was diagnosed with a devastating disease. Now this Katy teen finds purpose and meaning giving gift boxes of love to other teens with chronic illnesses. Here is her story... Written by Mikaela Aschoff

October 23, 2010 was supposed to be the carefree day of my first homecoming. Prior to this date, I was a healthy teenager attending Seven Lakes High School who worked hard to make good grades. I was a driven teen with many passions and it was my plan to go to a prestigious culinary school after I graduated, and one day own my own cake and catering business. I had my goals set and my future planned – or so I thought. At the dance, my friends and I hit the dance floor and we were having a blast. About an hour into the evening, however, I started feeling “off ” and slightly dizzy. I have never had that feeling before, and I tried to push through it. Then I began having a sharp pain in my side. Before I knew it, I became instantly pale, my eyes rolled back, and I fainted right there in the center of the dance floor.

Misdiagnosed as Panic Attacks

The first hospital I visited had no idea what was wrong with me, so they said I had a panic attack. My mom disagreed, to put it nicely. She was my champion and was determined to find me help elsewhere. My general practitioner was not sure what to do with me either, and because lab results were largely inconclusive, my ailments were mislabeled as anxiety. During this time, I had

another really bad episode at home, so my mom took me to Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. Instead of ignoring or mislabeling the issue, they decided to transfer me to the specialists at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in the medical center. By this time, it seemed my body was in overdrive with symptoms. If I stood up for even a minute, I would faint. Sitting up became difficult. My legs were not working properly and I would require assistance just to walk a couple of steps. Being dizzy and nauseous became commonplace. My heart continued to race and my chest felt very tight. I had an intense pain on one side of my abdomen and I felt completely exhausted and unable to think clearly.

Experiments and Answers

The tests continued to come back normal, so the team decided to have me get up and walk to see if they could witness my reaction. As I got out of bed, I immediately became pale and my lower legs turned red. I became hot to the touch and only made it a couple of steps before collapsing. Doctors checked my vitals and noticed an extreme drop in my blood pressure and a racing heartbeat. Because the inability to remain upright without symptoms is a hallmark symptom for a condition called Dysautonomia,

my doctor ordered a tilt table test from which I finally received my official diagnosis: Dysautonomia with subtype of Neurocardiogenic Syncope. Dysautonomia refers to a group of complex conditions caused by a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Basically, it means a person’s autonomic nervous system is not functioning properly. The autonomic nervous system controls everything that your body does for you that you don’t have to consciously think about (breathing, heartbeat, etc.). When your autonomic nervous system is not working properly, almost anything in your body can go wrong. Unfortunately, there is no cure for my illness, although there is a chance I could outgrow it by my mid-twenties. There is also no exact treatment for the illness, so medications must continually be adjusted to keep up with my symptoms.

Giving the Gift of Hope

After being ill and homebound for over a year after diagnosis, and having to go through more rounds of extensive tests, I felt exhausted. I kept praying that God would bring something good out of my situation. It was then that I had the idea to bring Dysautonomia awareness to the forefront and help other teens with this disease and other

life-changing chronic illnesses; so my charity Mik’s Hidden Hearts Alliance was born. My idea was to send fellow teens gift boxes to let them know there are people who care. I also wanted to create a social outreach program to stay in contact so we could all support each other. Friends and family began donating gift cards and teen-focused gifts, and we delivered dozens of “Hope Kits” to the teens at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Though my body was not well, helping others made my spirit come alive. We have since sent hundreds of gift bags to Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and have had Hope Kit requests from all over the country. We have met so many incredible patients along the way. Our local dysautonomia community even hosted its first annual Boo Bash event in Katy to raise awareness and funds for more hope kits. Teens and their families who once thought they were alone with this underdiagnosed condition are grateful for Mik’s Hidden Hearts Alliance. My new friends have inspired me just as much as they say I inspire them. My message to others is one of hope and serves as a reminder to focus on what YOU can do, not on what your body can’t do. KM

The Superhero 5K benefitting Keep Kids Connected was held recently at the Villagio Town Center. More than 300 runners and walkers of all ages participated to raise money for Keep Kids Connected, which provides netbook computers to sick children in an effort to keep them connected while undergoing treatment. Ye Olde Annual Madrigal Celebration Recently James E. Taylor High School’s choir, under the direction of Kevin Riehle, Director/Chair of Fine Arts and Sara Proodian, Assistant Director, invited over 600 parents, family, and friends to attend the 29th Madrigal Dinner. Patrons enjoyed a fabulous four course catered dinner that was served by the students as well as wonderful decorations reminiscent of medieval times. Guests enjoyed beautiful singing along with a silent auction.

Wall of Heroes Honors Veterans Hayes Elementary recently found a way to honor our country’s veterans. Students were asked to bring in a photo of a veteran in their family and include information such as their relationship to them, the branch of the military they belonged to, what they did in the service, their rank, and when they served our country. With the help of parent volunteers, a moving memorial, Hayes Wall of Heroes, was created.

Students Trek to Africa Recently, 16 Houston Christian High School students traveled to the Southwestern-most tip of Africa. Students experienced the culture, history, and customs of the people of Cape Town, South Africa, and Victoria Falls at Livingstone in Zambia. As part of the 15 day educational trip, the students spent five days in the world-renowned Kruger National Park to awe in God’s creation while enjoying many well-known animals found in this beautiful part of the world. While visiting Cape Town, the group played and spent time with the orphans of the Baphemelele Children’s Home located in South Africa’s township, Khayelitsha. The trip gave each trekker plenty of time to engage local people in conversation while gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for South Africans and Zambians. Next year, a new group of students will travel to Turkey as part of the Globe Trek program at Houston Christian High School. ©2012 Katy Magazine

Scouting News

Dayna Porter Receives Gold Award

We love our Katy scouts Katy Girl Receives Gold Award

Dayna Porter, a junior at Taylor High School, recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. Dayna’s project was called “Bags for Hope” and its purpose was to target homelessness in the community. She and her friends, family, and troop members sewed 200 fabric drawstring bags and filled them with water bottles and various toiletry items like soaps, razors, shampoos, and lotions that had been donated by many friends and several hotels in the community. Dayna delivered them to the Star of Hope Mission and the Open Door Mission.

Thomas King, John Lanier, and Mark Melton all of Troop 209 of St. Peters United Methodist Church are recipients of the Eagle Scout rank. These young men are fine examples of just a few of the virtues the Eagle Scout rank represents: Service to the community, leadership, and dedication.

Mitchell Anderson achieves Eagle Scout Rank

After Cub Scouts, Mitchell joined Troop 230 in Katy. Mitchell was one of the first scouts from Troop 230 to earn the Triple Crown Award. For his Eagle Scout Project, he organized and supervised the planning and execution of an effort to remove invasive plants growing around two of the lakes at Sheldon Lake State Park. Mitchell graduated from Katy Taylor High School and is now attending the University of Oklahoma pursuing a degree in Petroleum Engineering.

How to be a

Preschool

Detective

Discover how to find a preschool that fits you and your child’s needs, and at the same time, feels like home Written by Ella Hearrean

W

At The Learning Experience, children participate in both academics and active play time

When the time comes to choose the right preschool, a little detective work will go a long way in selecting the preschool that best fits your child. Katy parents and teachers share some tips for getting your child’s academic career headed in the right direction. Marcie Payne knows what it’s like to regret choosing a certain preschool. “I was too hasty,” she says about her first decision, “and I learned that my children get out what I put into the process.” After moving to Katy, she decided to investigate schools before enrolling her children, Ben and Caitlyn, into Crosspoint Christian School. “Become active in a moms group, church, sports team, or subdivision,” Payne suggests. Other parents are the best resources for information.”

It is important to keep in mind the temperament and personality of your child when choosing a preschool

Snoop Online

An easy check online can reveal citations and reports regarding a specific school. If there are red flags, it’s important to discuss these with the director of the school and provide them the opportunity to clarify. “Every parent should check out parent reviews and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) website,” advises Steve Sandweiss, owner of Tiger Land and A Child’s Reflection. “The TDFPS reports any deficiencies found during unannounced visits.”

Scout Schools

To find out if a school is as good as it seems on paper, parents are encouraged to tour at least four schools and compare

environments. Debbie Anders, marketing director of Primrose of West Cinco Ranch, begins with a smell test. “A school should smell clean, like home,” she says. In addition, parents should pay attention to the way teachers interact with their students, the kind of work hanging in the hallways, and the layout of the classrooms and playground. “First impressions make or break a parent’s decision,” she adds.

Priority Planning

Whether you are looking for a faith-based school or one focused more on physical activity, the values of the school can determine whether it’s where your child belongs. “Find out if its policies match your expectations,” Sandweiss advises. Factors that may impact the family include cost, duration of the school day, proximity of the school to work or home, methods of communication, parent involvement, and the enrollment process. “We start the day off right, and build friendships with other families,” explains Payne. Stephanie Leal, director of Kids ‘R’ Kids Katy, says that safety is often another factor. “Some parents want extra reassurance that their child is okay,” she says. “In addition to keeping our front doors locked, we provide online viewing of their child’s classroom.”

Enrolling Students

Inquire about what you will need in order to enroll and gather those resources well in advance of enrollment. Talk to administration ahead of time to find out how the school handles enrollment and what you need to do. Some parents even go to the extent of waiting in line overnight to make sure that their children are accepted into the preschool of their choice. You will also want to make sure if the school’s enrollment timing is suitable for you and your child’s schedule.

Finding a Fit

Various preschools are available that cater to specific developmental needs. When Shylo Ulcak enrolled her daughter Karli in Katy’s Early Childhood Enrichment Center (Katy’s ECEC) at the suggestion of a therapist, she was impressed with the staff ’s willingness to make accommodations. “Karli has Down syndrome, and the teachers worked with her and her therapies,” Ulcak recalls. Seven years later, she attributes her daughter’s well-being to the school. “There’s no way she’d be doing this well without their support.”

Questioning Curriculum

It is important to compare schools’ philosophies since every school varies in their approach to learning. Be prepared to ask specific questions about curriculum, activities, and learning stations. “We balance our curriculum between loud and quiet, outdoor and indoor, and teacher-led and child-led activities,” explains Cheryl Sage, owner of British Private Prep School,

At Primrose School students partcipate in a variety of activities that foster creativity and indivual learning

“because that’s what engages the child.” Additionally, Lynn Castro, mother of 4-year-old Leila, points out the importance of enrichment programs. “Leila gets to explore different things such as yoga, theater arts, and science, as part of her curriculum at The Learning Experience. She gets to figure out what she likes,” says Castro.

Observe Teachers

You can gauge the quality of a school by its teachers. Requirements of a preschool teacher’s training differ from school to school, so be sure to ask about the teacher’s credentials. Nicole Istre, owner of Katy’s ECEC, reminds parents that the quality of learning hinges on the quality of teaching. “A curriculum,” she says, “is only as good as its teachers, so look at how they relate to each other and to the students.” Sandweiss emphasizes that teacher continuity is a key indicator of the quality of a business and the happiness of the staff. “One of our teachers, Ms. Pam, has been at Tiger Land for over 20 years, and many teachers and families are former students.” Keep in mind the temperament of your child and whether or not they would interact well with the teachers you have met.

Student Interaction

Parents are encouraged to ask questions and take their time when choosing the ideal preschool

When visiting, take notice of how the kids are interacting with one another. Pay attention to how certain behaviors and interactions between the children are handled by the staff. Ask yourself if the preschool’s values and discipline style align with yours. Picture your child or children in the environment, interacting with the other kids there. Determine if your child would easily fit into the current student environment.

First Instinct

Part of your evaluation will be based on comparisons, facts, and referrals and part of your selection will be based on intuition. Karen Goertz researched many schools before finally choosing A Child’s Reflection for her children, Ben and Addison. “This school felt different, more cozy and welcoming. It just felt right.” The director of The Learning Experience, Wanda Flores explains that “parents are 90 percent of the equation. They set the tone for their children.” Goertz adds that her instincts proved to be accurate. “The teachers were creative and amazing. Kindergarten was a breeze.” Let yourself be guided by your own values and the needs of your child, take your time and you’ll find the perfect preschool for your family. KM ELLA HEARREAN is a Katy freelance writer and mother of two boys who loves her sons’ preschool.

Preschool Detective Clues What is the school’s educational philosophy? What are the school’s disciplinary measures? Do I like the environment; will my child be safe here? What is the level of parental involvement required? What is the student to teacher ratio? Does the preschool match my value system?

T

The Best Buddies program was the invention of Anthony K. Shriver while he was a student at Georgetown University in 1987. The son of Sargeant Schriver, who founded the Peace Corps, and Eunice Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics, Anthony was destined to make his own mark in the world. The inspiration behind being inspired to improve the lives of special needs individuals can be accredited to Eunice’s mentally handicapped sister, Rosemary Kennedy. Since the first chapter of the organization was built in Georgetown, it has grown to include 1,500 chapters in middle schools, high schools, and colleges worldwide.

A Unique Program

“I was determined to make my kids visible,” says Shannon Womack, the special education instructor at Seven Lakes High School, “and they are.” That sentiment is as heartfelt as it is universal among the teachers in Katy ISD who utilize this unique program to pair high school students up with special needs students. The Best Buddies Program has been adopted at all six of Katy’s high schools. Angela Angel of Katy High explains, “It helps them to be more accepted and involved in things, and for our general education students, it helps them to accept everybody.” Maccie Hardin, Special Needs Paraprofessional at Mayde Creek HighSchool, was involved with Best Buddies all four years of high school which led her to the decision of working with them as her career. She has returned to her alma mater to do just that. “The love they give, you can’t replace with anything,” she relates. “Friendship is different with special needs kids. General ed kids may not see one another every day, and it’s no big deal, but if these kids don’t see

Brittany Scofield finds gre being the at rewar president d in of the Se ven Lake Best Bu s ddies prog ram

their buddy every day, they’re devastated. It really does change who you are as a person.”

Powerful Friendships

An application process is used to pair potential buddies and students with similar interests and personalities. Upon becoming a member, each student is given a packet with information about the various disabilities they may encounter and their causes, as well as an etiquette and behavior guide, to facilitate communication in these new relationships. Ample opportunities for these relationships to grow and flourish are provided to the students by way of group activities on a regular basis. These can include anything from a night out at a local restaurant or an after school ice cream party. “When you first sign on to Best Buddies, I don’t think you realize how much someone can mean to you. You have friends among your peers, but there is a different level of friendship with someone with special needs. Your buddy is a genuine friend forever,” shares Hanna Perepeluk a student at Mayde Creek.

School Improvement

Before Best Buddies came on the scene, special needs students were often isolated from other students and missed out on memorable high school experiences. Thanks in part to the awareness this program has created, they are now involved in Homecoming, sporting events, and prom. The Katy community has been very accepting and cooperative with the special needs students and the Best Buddies program. The Katy Elks Club sponsors a Christmas party every year for Best Buddies from all six high schools as well as an end of the school year party. Katy area students build lifelong skills while competing in ComedySportz matches

“If you don’t get it, you’re gonna’ get it, ‘cause here we go!” These are the words you will hear at the beginning of every ComedySportz High School League Match, right after a rapid-fire explanation of the rules of the game. Created in 1995, the ComedySportz Houston High School League now includes teams from all six Katy ISD high schools, as well as Faith West Academy. Improvisational comedy teams compete for laughs against other schools in matches throughout the academic year.

Written by Cherri Northcutt

It’s fun, interactive, and clean comedy for all ages.

Playing Games

Katy High School senior Zachary Gilliam remembers a game where teams tell a story that is alternately happy, then sad. The game is called “Boo, Yay,” and the audience will call out “boo” or “yay” after each line from the story. “Somebody from the yay side said the character won a million dollars,” Gilliam explains. “After everyone yelled out, ‘Yay,’ I looked down

Laughter at my feet, very sad, and simply said, ‘Recession.’ That got a big laugh.” Another favorite game among players is Pop-up Storybook, in which one player narrates the story while turning the imaginary pages of a giant pop-up book. The other three members of the team make up the characters in the book, striking a new awkward or unusual pose as each page is turned. JT Heilander, a junior at Faith West Academy, remembers one such game. “I was the polar opposite of what people expected,” he says. “I acted like an exercise instructor reading a work-out manual.” Heilander barked out instructions, while his team flexed their muscles and did push-ups.

“You would expect to see ripped dudes, but it was a bunch of skinny girls,” Heilander recalls.

Gearing up for Matches

It may seem impossible to practice for improv, but the ComedySportz teams actually do rehearse. There are 10 matches a year, and rehearsals take place during the week before each match. “Even though each show is different, it’s important to practice and go through the games,” says Gilliam. “If I don’t practice, I really mess up,” says Morton Ranch sophomore Karina Rangel. “But you just shake it off and laugh about it.” Danielle Grisko, a junior at Seven Lakes agrees. “Failing isn’t a horrible catastrophe,” she explains. “It’s an opportunity to figure out what you did wrong and make it better for the future.”

Members of the Katy High School ComedySportz team, from left to right: Hope Hardman, Ethan Sims, Star Yarbrough, Kylie Boone, Payton Trayhan, Taylor Dotson, Dani Northcutt, David Vasquez, Coach Miguel Sanchez, Tyler Graber, Jeremy Martin, Andres Rusic, Zachary LaPlue, Jake Brown, Michael Casarez, Jessica Walden, and Chelsea Scott enjoy impromptu performances

Supportive Coaches

None of this would be possible without the dedicated men and women who coach their teams and referee the matches, all of whom are members of the professional ComedySportz Houston troupe. “There’s nothing more gratifying than helping kids who are shy or have stage fright to come out of their shells,” shares Katy High coach Miguel Sanchez. Mariel Yera-Smithwick, known as Coach May to her students at Morton Ranch, Seven Lakes, and Mayde Creek, encourages students to look out for one another and to use the “yes, and…” way of thinking in improv. Both of these lessons teach team work. “Too often, we’re quick to negate or dismiss other people’s ideas,” May says, “I teach students to literally say, ‘Yes,’ to others and to build on their ideas.” Steph DeWaegeneer, a ComedySportz coach at Faith West Academy and Taylor, enjoys helping students explore their love of comedy. Before becoming a coach in Katy, she did professional improv with Second City, iO, and ComedySportz in Chicago. “I’m excited to share my knowledge and get involved with the future of improv comedy,” says DeWaegeneer.

Lessons That Last a Lifetime

Dianah Dulaney, owner of ComedySportz Houston, enjoys seeing students have more confidence and self-esteem because of the program. “Our goals with the high school league are to build trust and creative experimentation in a safe environment and to expose students to improvisational skills that they will use in all walks of life.” Linda Peavy, a parent volunteer at Katy High, has seen many students make positive growth through improv. “It helps them gain self-esteem and be creative,” she says. Taylor student Connor Woods adds, “It’s really helped me with school work, like making great presentations and thinking quickly.” Kathryn Gilliam, president of Katy High’s theater arts booster club, feels the lessons learned in ComedySportz will help students be successful after high school, as well. “The ability to think on their feet will serve them well as they go out into the world and interview for colleges, scholarships, and jobs,” she says.

Making Funny Friends

Many students find that they make new friends easily through the program. “Whenever we meet someone who has also been in ComedySportz, we are instant friends,” says Morton Ranch sophomore Mary Elders. Logan Beckham, a junior at Faith West Academy, says he will definitely continue with ComedySportz. “It was awesome being with the team,” he recalls. “It helped me be more outgoing and open myself up to others.” KM CHERRI NORTHCUTT is proud of her daughter, Dani, a member of Katy High School’s ComedySportz team.

Katy Education

Aimee Modic, a Katy ISD chemistry teacher, encourages her students to learn something new every day

Outstanding Educators Katy High School chemistry teacher goes beyond the classroom to inspire students and spark an interest in science Written by Liz Rector

Sitting in class as a high school student,

being inspired by math teacher Carol Sidoran and chemistry teacher Wanda Dann, Aimee Modic didn’t yet realize that she would one day become an inspirational teacher herself. Now a chemistry teacher at Katy High, Modic believes in lifelong learning and challenges her students to raise the bar. Creating Light Bulb Moments

Perhaps what makes Modic so successful at what she does is her desire to go above and beyond her job requirements; she has a natural drive to share information with others and a genuine love of science. “I love seeing kids having their ‘light bulb’ moments and listening to them share their thoughts, ideas, and experiences,” Modic says. Modic is involved in many clubs and projects and takes advantage of opportunities to teach others and nurture their skills. Modic is the sponsor for the KHS Science Olympiad team and spent last summer working with the US National Chemistry Olympiad team. “Science Olympiad is a great opportunity for kids to learn about and explore areas of science that go beyond the standard classroom curriculum,” Modic says.

Modic believes it’s also important to maintain good working relationships with colleagues and other educators. “I enjoy working with other chemistry teachers to share ideas and talk about strategies,” says Modic. “I’ve worked with some of my colleagues for over 20 years and they have a wonderful spirit and sense of humor,” Modic shares. “I most enjoy teaching in Katy ISD because of my colleagues.”

“I love seeing kids having their ‘light bulb’ moments and listening to them share their thoughts, ideas, and experiences.”

The Chemistry Olympiad is another level of international competition currently involving 72 countries competing in both theoretical and laboratory challenges. The top 20 chemistry students in the US compete for the 4 positions on the travel team. “I also had 2 students qualify for the National test for Chemistry Olympiad and one of those students earned a place at the training camp with the other 19 top students in the country,” Modic proudly adds.

Ongoing Training and Lifelong Learning

As a constant learner, Modic says it’s important to obtain ongoing training specific to her subject. “I have gotten wonderful ideas through state science teacher conventions, biennial conferences with the Associated Chemistry Teachers of Texas (ACT2) and at other national and international workshops.” When asked about her future goals, Modic said “I would like to continue to improve at my craft and my knowledge in the chemistry area.”

Not So Weird Science

“My favorite part about chemistry is labs, but I also love teaching about areas of chemistry where patterns and interesting number progressions come to light.” - Aimee Modic Although she is there to teach and inspire, Modic admits she is frequently encouraged by her students as well. “The students inspire me to go above and beyond when they get excited about something,” says Modic. And once the day is over, extracurricular activities like the Science Olympiad keep the excitement alive. “I have really enjoyed getting to know the kids and seeing them get so excited when they do well in a competition,” Modic says.

A Lasting Impression

Making sure students have the education they need to be successful in college is important to Modic. “I am proud that my students feel prepared when they leave high school,” Modic says. “I’ve gotten several messages from students and parents letting me know that they really felt equipped for college. That makes me feel like my efforts have been worthwhile.” KM LIZ RECTOR enjoys being the Editorial Coordinator for Katy Magazine. Liz grew up in the Katy ISD school system and has lived in Katy for over a decade.

Healthy Families Shanna Trcka has been able to avoid using prescription medications and has managed her OCD through meditation and therapy

Katyites share their journey through Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and give others a glimpse at life with this debilitating disorder Written by Shetye Cypher

Imagine...

shopping compulsively with no ability to stop yourself. Picture yourself unable to move on to tasks because the papers in front of you are not perfectly aligned. Katy residents Shanna Trcka and Lawson Garrison know what it’s like to deal with some of these issues and have come to discover that they have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD. “For every upcoming event, I would stress out and go buy new clothes and shoes if we were going out, and then hide it from my husband,” says Trcka, 41, mother of 8-year-old twins and a 14-year old daughter. Trcka, was diagnosed with OCD when she had sought therapy for her shopping compulsion just a year ago. OCD can also coexist with ADD, depression, eating disorders, and other anxiety disorders. Obsessive Thought Patterns

“There have been times that I have turned around to make sure the garage door was shut. I will wipe the counters more times in a day than the average person, and I fix the pillows on the couch constantly. Most people don’t know or realize it is something I have to complete so I can move on. But I can feel the stress overwhelm me if I do not do it,” Trcka says. “The struggles I have are more severe with the compulsive shopping addiction. It is an act that at times I cannot help, or realize that I have done until after the fact.” The National Institute of Mental Health says OCD affects about 2.3 percent of the US population ages 18 to 54, which translates into approximately 3.3 million Americans. An additional 1 million children and adolescents have the disorder. “Once I received my diagnosis, my daily actions began to make sense. I have this to-do list that I have become so obsessed with. Everything has to be perfect,” she says. “I have wiped counters tirelessly and have even turned around to go back in kitchen and make sure that items on the counter are turned a certain way.”

Mayde Creek senior Lawson Garrison struggles with extreme perfectionism which often impedes his productivity

The Costs of OCD

“I have gotten our family in debt many times due to my compulsive shopping. I’ve also been late for work and school several times because I made my kids clean up, or have had to go straighten pillows on the couch, or make the bed,” says Trcka. “My girls have had to tiptoe around my needs, not playing with toys because it could cause a mess, and not having friends play in house. Trcka finds that it is a daily struggle to control her compulsions. She feels more in control even though she still deals with episodes from time to time. She sees a therapist as part of her treatment, which she admits is a huge challenge for her. Meditation is also a helpful way for her to deal with her compulsions. “They (Trcka’s family) have seen me control it and I am a bit more relaxed these days about cleaning and the house being tidy. I am more at ease now and less tense than I used to be. My husband and I have an open line of communication, and now that he understands the disorder, I feel more understood,” says Trcka.

When Perfection Becomes Obsession

Lawson Garrison, 17, a senior in high school, is currently undergoing testing at school for his condition. Whenever he is writing, if a letter does not look just right, he has to keep looking at it and he is unable to turn in the page until he feels like it is perfect. “Things at home have to be in exactly the right place. Everything has a certain system. If one thing is out of line, I freak out,” admits Garrison. Garrison says he does his best to not let OCD get in his way. However, he says it is worse at school than home. “I saw a poster in the hallway and something was misspelled on it. I had to scratch out the word and fix it,” Garrison says. “My scantrons have to be perfectly filled out and I have to press down really hard so that my marks are really dark. My name has to be really small and even, and if one letter looks bigger than another, I have to erase it and start over. I fixate on items that others may not consider important.” The good news is that experts have determined that OCD is a treatable condition. Symptoms can be managed through medication, meditation, and therapy. Those afflicted with OCD tendencies often go on to lead productive and fulfilling lives. KM SHETYE CYPHER is a freelance writer who has enjoyed living in Katy with her family. She is the journalism teacher and publications advisor at Mayde Creek High School.

Healthy Katy Families

With equipment, classes, and childcare, it’s no mystery why gyms are so popular

Many women find relaxation through Yoga which offers many health benefits

Experts agree that finding a fitness routine you enjoy increases your chances for success. Here are some of the most popular workout choices for busy Katy women. Written by Kenzie Stanfield

Whether you work part-time or full-time, in the home or out, all moms have been there; frazzled, tired, and in desperate need of some “me time.” Often, Katy moms take wonderful care of their families, yet sometimes put their own needs last. The good news is just one hour, a few times a week, can work wonders to help energize and recharge a busy mom. Here are some of the most popular workouts for Katy women. Some Katy women join local fitness groups, like Katy Fit, where they can team up with others and train for 5K runs and marathons

CrossFit is preferred by women who want a rigorous workout with weight training, cardio, and more

Personal fitness instructors keep clients on track and personalize training

It’s possible to get a great workout while spending time with family

1. Yoga Yoga provides busy moms an opportunity to pull back from a crazy, hectic day to become both physically and mentally strong. Due to the calm, peaceful environment, yoga “cultivates mindfulness, a positive self-image, and teaches you to be in the present moment,” says Annette Le Pavec, owner of Artmontage Yoga in Katy. Just a few of the many benefits of yoga include better sleep patterns, weightloss, a supportive community, and the ability to de-stress. Kim Minnick, a busy mom of 4 and recent resident to Katy, strongly agrees. “I wanted to explore something new and restorative, outside of a traditional health club,” she says. “Yoga is an all-over body workout. I love the intensity and the therapeutic benefits.”

2. Gym With classes like Zumba, Pilates, Spinning, Swimming, and more, there are plenty of options for moms to stay fit at their local gym. Top that off with free childcare, and it’s no wonder gyms are convenient for Katy moms. Another important benefit of a gym is the opportunity to meet and connect with other busy moms. “I just love the whole family aspect of the YMCA,” said Amy Dyble, mother of three. “It is so much more than just a workout. The instructors and staff are so encouraging and supportive; they are just inspiring.” Dyble would know. She has lost an ESN Health offers Katy women one-on-one training from certified professionals

impressive 80 pounds through a weight loss program and support from the YMCA.

3. Personal Training Hiring a personal trainer offers many benefits to a busy mom, asserts Ryan Kobermann, CSCS, of ESN Health. Our private, customized one-on-one training studio is punctual and efficient, allowing busy moms to show up, workout, and go on about their day.” A personal trainer can assess fitness levels, set customized personal goals with their clients, and motivate clients through personal accountability. Becky Litton, a client of ESN Health, says the benefits to having a personal trainer have far surpassed other exercise options she has explored. “This has been a total lifestyle change,” she says. “I quickly reached my ideal weight and the best part is the accountability.” Many who have personal trainers say they love the individual instruction, the support, and how great they feel about reaching their goals. “I feel good, am in a better mood, and have brought healthy living into my home,” shares Litton.

4. Boot Camp and Baby Boot Camp Boot Camps have become popular because of the fast weight loss results they can deliver, and convenient before and after work classes they offer. Combining cardio drills, strength training, and core work, boot camps have been effective Yoga is an excellent choice for increasing flexibility, strengthening core, and minimizing stress

in helping clients trim up at record speed. A nationally franchised stroller fitness program, Baby Boot Camp Katy offers all the benefits of a traditional boot camp with a few bonuses, mid-morning hours and you get to bring your child. “The beautiful thing is that there are no excuses not to work out,” says Maria Gorosito, trainer and owner of Baby Boot Camp Katy. “You are able to bring your babies with you, get back into shape or even better shape, and develop a real sense of community with other moms.” Jacqueline Bryant, local mom and a Baby Boot Camp member, says that the varied workouts, group atmosphere, and bonding with her daughter have been the highlights. “A healthy mom means healthy kids and a healthy family.”

5. CrossFit CrossFit is based on the premise that all the workouts center on movements that mimic real-life, combining strength and endurance. Moms definitely understand the physical demands of each day and CrossFit Katy coach, co-owner and mom, Lezlie Reeves says they can help. “Everyday tasks as a mom become easier as we become stronger and more fit. We set tangible goals and track our workouts because every mom likes to see progress.” With a variety of class times and each class lasting one hour, working out 3-5 times a week is tangible for virtually every mom. Coaches provide both one-on-one and group instruction in that hour, and CrossFit members are encouraged to push themselves to the limit. Bradi Redmon, mom of two and member of CrossFit Katy, sees the benefits. “I’ve never stayed consistent and accountable at any other gym for this long. CrossFit is fun and has the same feel as a sport; it has made me realize I can do so much more than I thought.”

6. Running Groups “What I love about running is that it’s simple,” says Katy Fit coach Candice Furman. “You don’t need any special equipment except some good running shoes, and you can run anywhere, anytime, anyplace.” Running has existed since the creation of time but running groups and training together for a shared goal can make a somewhat individual sport feel more like a team. “I love running with Katy Fit because of the camaraderie,” says Jen Smith, local Katy mom and runner. Katy Fit is a 5K, ½ marathon, and full marathon training group that runs from July through January of each year. Following a time trial, each participant is placed in a running group and given a training schedule to help each runner attain goals, build endurance, distance, and speed throughout the ensuing months. Just a few of the benefits of Katy Fit include on-site coaching during organized runs, a set schedule that you can accomplish with the group or on your own time, and the obvious physical benefits including

greater endurance, better metabolism, and a mental destressor. “Running is something I can do for myself and it gives me a bigger purpose,” shares Smith, who runs for the non-profit Living Water International.

7. Athletic Performance Coach “Train smarter, not harder” is the motto of Third Coast Training, a weight loss and athletic performance coaching facility. Using science to assess a client’s metabolic profile, the coaches develop a specific training plan based on profile results. You are then entrusted with your plan and begin your workouts. Once a quarter the client returns to the facility to reassess and update the training plan, but just know, this isn’t a program for those that might need daily encouragement or motivation from a group, it is a selfdirected approach. “I would recommend this to any busy mom because the plan is specifically designed for my body based on my metabolism. I’ve seen great results and have lost 35 lbs. since I began,” Jill Rives, Katy mother of two says. There are so many choices for getting a good workout and depending on individual needs; there is an option for every busy mom in Katy. While this list is not exhaustive, it does give most moms a place to begin. Other possibilities include Zumba or dance classes, Pilates, spinning, swimming, or

even at home video series. The bottom line is this - moms who exercise tend to be happy, and when mom is happy, everyone is happy. KM KENZIE STANFIELD is a freelance writer for Katy Magazine and is married to her high school sweetheart. They have four children and are loving life in Katy.

Dealing with a Picky Eater

My child is a very picky eater. Do you have any tips for introducing new foods to her or ensuring she gets enough vitamins and nutrients?

If you have a question for our panel of experts for ASK THE DOCTOR, email editor@katymagazine.com

This is one of the most difficult, yet common, roadblocks parents run into. The best advice I can give parents is to continue to retry different types of foods; just because your child didn’t like something the first time doesn’t mean they won’t the second or third time. Also, try preparing food items in a variety of ways as acquiring tastes for different foods can take time. If you’re concerned that your child’s selective eating habits are negatively impacting their nutrient needs, you can always have your primary care physician make a referral to see a registered dietitian. – Dawn Bunting, Senior Pediatric Clinical Dietitian at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus

Contact Lenses

What is the difference between soft and hard contact lenses? Hard contact lenses are made of a gas permeable plastic material and are designed for long term usage. Soft contact lenses are made of a silicon hydrogel material and are generally used for shorter periods. While hard contact lenses are more effective at correcting high degrees of astigmatism and refractive error, soft contacts have gained increasing popularity in recent years due to their comfort and ease of use. - Jesse McKey, M.D., Texas Eye Institute

Sinus Infections vs. Colds

What are the main differences between a cold and a sinus infection? Are both contagious? Colds are most often caused by viruses and can cause nasal congestion, runny nose, postnasal drip, sore throat, and sometimes fever. They can make people feel run down for three to five days before symptoms resolve by the end of one week and are contagious. Sinus infections often result from prolonged cold symptoms that block and inflame the sinus cavities, causing facial pain or pressure. Sinus infections can also be caused by bacteria and other irritants such as allergens or chemicals. Sinus infections can also be contagious if they are brought on by a virus or bacteria. - Thanh Ho Taylor, D.O., Primary Care Physician affiliated with Memorial Hermann Katy

Health Bulletins Health-related news tidbits for Katy Families

Baby Air Travel Pointers

During the winter months many families travel to see loved ones. Be sure your air travel is on track with these helpful tidbits. Baby’s ears may plug up or hurt during takeoff or landing due to the change in cabin air pressure. Keep ears clear by feeding when the plane is climbing and descending as swallowing helps equilibrium. Bring small snacks such as Cheerios or bagels for nibbling. As always, give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport and go through security so that you and your baby are as relaxed as possible. For more tips, visit texaschildrenspediatrics.org.

Updating the Flu Vaccine

The winter season brings with it bouts with the influenza, commonly known as the flu. Flu viruses are unpredictable and cause a respiratory illness that generally lasts a week or longer. Symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, hacking cough, runny nose, or vomiting. These viruses change from year to year so be sure your vaccine protects against last year’s strain as well as two additional ones. Vaccines last about 6 to 12 months so protection needs annual updating. Learn more about the flu vaccine at healthychildren.org.

Texas Children’s Hospital Introduces Medical-legal Partnership

Texas Children’s Hospital and the Houston Bar Association’s Houston Volunteer Lawyers announced the medical-legal partnership (MLP) that will provide low-income patients and their families with critical legal assistance. MLP is a unique health-care delivery model that tackle health issues that have legal solutions including negotiating with a landlord, helping a family secure Medicaid payment for specialized services, or preparing legal guardianships for parents of special needs children.

Memorial Hermann Katy Offers Breast Tomosynthesis

An innovative type of mammography that improves physicians’ ability to detect smaller tumors at the earliest stages of breast cancer is now available at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. Breast tomosynthesis is a 3-D imaging technology that enables radiologists to see “inside” the breast. It combines data from a series of low-dose radiation, two-dimensional (2-D) images taken during a short scan to create a single three-dimensional (3-D) image of the breast. While breast tomosynthesis will look and feel the same to the patient, it offers a number of advantages over conventional 2-D digital mammography, including improved diagnostic and screening accuracy, fewer recalls, greater radiologist confidence, and 3-D lesion localization.

Heart Disease Support Groups

Many people and families face heart health concerns and decisions. To support those who struggle with heart disease and others who will follow, Methodist West Houston has partnered with Mended Hearts to provide the support needed for the community. This group is free and meets on the third Thursday of every month from 5:30 – 7 p.m. The next Mended Hearts Support Group meets at Methodist West Houston Hospital located at 18500 Katy Fwy. in Mesquite Conference Room A and is open to all who have personal experience with heart disease. In dealing with this difficult disease it can be beneficial to find support and information through support groups like Mended Hearts. For more details about Mended Hearts, or to RSVP to a meeting, call 832-522-3062 and visit mendedhearts.org.
