SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTUE Extension

Academic Individual Project 3rd year 2019/09-2019/12

5

This Project provides different atmosphere of space for the architecture school including review rooms. gallery, and Cafe. Our site was given in a spcae between different institutional building, and shaped in 6400 sf of rectilinear on the middle of stairs on the original site.

The projection of circulation from the site seems like a water flow, and it led me to the question, how does the speed of circulation create the interaction between spaces? The Idea of less interruption with interaction is the study of interaction between spaces depending on the speed of circulation.

The concept of water flow as a circulation on the originial site used to have a problem of “short-cut”. All the movement were limited by the blockes on the site, and students had to go around them. The building has influenced on the site and changed the landsacpe to be more productive and natural way. THE MAKER’S SPACE Academic Team Project, group of 4 4th year 2020/09-2020/12

13

This Project creates a research center on the parking lot that is 50,000 sf that could be accessible to everyone in the local area. The Proposal includes various resaerch shops, such as metal, wood, and 3d print shops, and also provides the space having mutual compatability. Front and Back lobby area will include Library and study area that could also be used for classes. The idea of in-

serting landscape to factory typology brings community into the site and create more social interactions through occupiable green spaces on the roof. The maker’s space reflects the collaboration of community, environment, and creativity.

Exploded Site Analysis The Site is located around the parking lots and parking garage at the edge of Falls Church County Virginia. Metro and commercial areas are connected by the site from North to South. West side of the site are facing towards middles & high School which are the potential visitors. Mid-low density of neighborhood population enables the program more spread out through the gross area, but also address the challange to metigate between infrastructure and residential area.

Study Models

thourgh the study of organic form that imitates the natural curved form of landscape, transmission of visual connectivity between programs is applied through interrior and exterior. Distorted angles and changing ceiling heights provides spacial compression and release on ciruclation and reveals the continuity of volumes inside. Each study shows integrated adjustment of spacial program with various architectural idea.

Site Plan

We have the South Corner of our site as a main entrance to attract the attention of the high school and residential side. Another entrance on the North corner opens up for people entering from the parking garage and the future dorms. South west corner embraces the out-

15

door exhibition space as well as truck loading zone. The morph, green roof, touches the ground to address the accessability of the top and expose the nature side on the residential side. Our project follows a grid that is aligned towards the site. The major grids are aligned with the parking

garage and they are what the arches are placed on. These grids are spaced 45 feet apart which allows us to have large open spaces for lab spaces. The minor axis is perpendicular to the major axis and are spaced 20 feet apart, which dictates where the arches come down to the ground and breaks up the space. The landscape is designed with the slope of the arches varying heights which creates its own form on this flat parking lot site.

A mezzanine is added to divide spaces and gives the ability to see all the workers simultaneously while also giving a break to go outside. The second floor mezzanine breaks the large public areas into smaller more personal spaces. This space also gives the option for increased storage areas, break rooms for the researchers, and allows for the programs to overlap and communicate.

Various sizes of arches create different linear offsets which makes diversity on threshold of the space under arches. Also it allows to diminish the boundaries between rooms, link all spaces into one giagantic system.

KINETIC MACHINE FOR SPACIAL SYSTEM

Academic Team Project, group of 3 3rd year 2019/09-2019/10

21

The Tension in a folded form manipulated the dimension. In terms of spacial system, the control of dimension is directly affective to experience of space or the quality of space. This machine changes the dimension of all edges by the movement of folded volume, the core. As Multi-axises tied together fold the transparent slits at the outer layer, the core space

gets more esposed to exterior. Each handle on each axis has the control of whole since all dimensions are connected by the core spcae. The transcaction of kinetic enery spreads out to different spaces on the machine and implies phenomenal spcaial movement with the system

INWARD URABN HUB

Academic Individual Project 3rd year 2020/03-2020/05

This Project proposes student housing as a part of mixed-use apartment complex, located at Raonoke, Virginia. The site is surrounded by two roads and train railway. The schemetic design of dentire complex reflects vrious access points to respond the context and infrastructures with elevation changes. The project is focused on residential block of complex, which provides 1 bedroom studio units and residential amenitites.

The Idea of inward publicity gives more clarity of threshold between public and private spaces. Geometry of balcony distrubutes daylight all over the units, but also creates distinctive authorship on facade. Expansions of corridor, which provide communal laundry, kitchen, and studying & gathering spaces, have connected through thriple height central atrium space. The contrast between wooden material on the floor and concrete wall subdivides into public, semi-public, and private area. Most of the public amenities are

suspended by cable structures that are attatched to 5 ft beams crossing each others on the roof. By having a different orientation on each amenitiy spaces grants various vew of our neighbors as well as emphasis of transitional moments of circulation.

The Idea of circulation becomes a space gives the indirect experience of table mountain from the bottom to the top observatory deck. The repetition of switching view between open and close makes strong impact of observatory space, facing towards table mountain. The gallery has very low linear slit windows to mediate direct sunlight from the south at the day time. The cafe is fully open to the street in purpose of showing pres-

The Idea of arraying spcaes continuosly is projected on transmission of nature though out the spaces. The circulation from bedroom to the work space depicts the experience as person goes out at the main entrance. Metal sheeting elements on the roof carries the water from roof on the bedroom to the storage above the work space. Several folding momements of metal sheets let the skylight shines inside, and let the rain dorps into the plants while original water from the top roof is carried to the 1F Floor Plan
