The owner’s interest was rooted in depicting ideas from the Art Deco tradition of detailing for the exterior. The popular international art design movement from 1925 until 1940’s employed elements of glamour, elegance, functionality and modernism. Our approach focused on creating a facade with a primary material laid in horizontal banding which allowed for the fenestrations to follow the same language. The ribbon effect which suggests a wrapped volume made up all of the exterior elements. In lieu of the sweeping curves of the Art Deco era, we allowed for the apertures of the building to move around the façade as empty corners, eroding the common form of the corner. The window treatment as a decorative element adds to the monolithic nature of the material for a homogeneous façade. The lack of detailing on the exterior expresses the purity of the form. FARM-HAUS01 Residence One-Story Option Mendota, Illinois
Architecture that endures is green. A lasting, environmentally responsible home must be three things: delightful, adaptable, and fundamentally energy efficient. To create a delightful space, we employ a modern yet timeless aesthetic that draws on universally admired qualities: ample natural light, thoughtful organization, a close indoor-outdoor relationship, and a strong connection between all spaces in the home. Surrounded by cultivated corn and a predominately flat landscape, this house is intended as a hideaway for its owner and guests from the hustle of the city of Chicago. The home is intended to be true to its surroundings: the climate, the context and the community. The one story proposal is reminiscent of the traditional barn or shed with a twist. Separating the two living blocks in the center by the public gathering space allows for a fragmented series of relationships, unique to the fantastic views surrounding the site. The public areas are arranged in an ‘open’ floor plan emphasizing openness and light from the large floor to structure windows and clerestory penetrations. Deep roof overhangs at the perimeter of the central space allows for protection against the harsh summer sun while welcoming the tempered light from the winter. The mechanical systems include radiant floor heating and a ducted energy recovery ventilator. Emphasis has been made to allow for outdoor living through multiple exterior accesses from the public spaces along with the private bedrooms. Copyright © 2012, ATELIER AZARA. All rights reserved.

Perched on top of an existing garage sits this 450sf wooden deck that was neglected and void of detail from the original owners. As new buyers, this prime location offers a great refuge from the residence with a large area offering little obstructions of views all around. On a limited budget the owners had a clear set of goals that served as the guiding principles for the design:
BEFORE
By the addition of planters on the outside perimeter of the upper deck, the greenery was expended extensively and with time will grow to full coverage of the railings. To deal with privacy, a translucent vertical series of fins equally spaced at 5” will slightly obscure one’s direct viewing onto the deck. Through the simple arrangement of the fins directions towards views allowed versus those restricted, the upper space of the garage deck becomes an oasis of green perched high above the street. MATERIALS: - Stained Southern Yellow Pine - Translucent Polycarbonate Panels - Electric Eye post lamps by IKEA - Insulated fiberglass planters - Wicker Furniture Seating

Greenwood Co-op Apartments is a condominium association that required the services of an Architect as a result of being cited by the City of Chicago for non compliance exterior porches. Like many other owners around Chicago, the stability of exterior porches became a high priority once the collapse of an apartment back in the summer of 2003. The disaster killed 13 individuals which became the deadliest porch collapse in US history. The ensuing investigation was highly critical of the way the balcony was built, finding a large number of errors in its construction which ultimately resulted in the collapse. The accident resulted in sweeping inspections of similar structures across Chicago including the owners of Greenwood Coop Association of its existing exterior porches. Atelier Azara was contracted to generate the technical documents necessary for obtaining the permitting for the construction of the five existing porches surrounding the building. The detailing of supports, straps, anchors and attachments followed the strict guidelines of the city requirements for all dead and live loads. The completed documents received the permit approval expediently for the contractor’s work to begin. The resulting construction is a wonderful and structural sound porch and deck system to last a long time. Workforce Language Services, LLC is dedicated to bridging language and culture in the workplace, thereby enhancing overall business profitability, creating opportunities for employee advancement, increasing respect across cultures and strengthening our communities. Within just six months after the build out of their current space, the companion saw an opportunity for expansion with the adjacent space made available by the landlord. Having already outgrown its space with programs and services, the owner and personal friend, contacted Atelier Azara to facilitate the architecture for the expansion. With a simple program that almost mirrors the current needs of the existing space, the expansion was meant to bolster an increase in learning and teaching space and separating the two sides of the business: Workforce Language Services and Multilingual Chicago. With both offsite and onsite services being provided, the architecture represents only a shell that comprises the two halves of the business for a cohesive unit.

BEFORE
The interior materials were very simple and cost effective. Drywall with paint, pendant high bay fixtures and wall sconces to provide a welcoming atmosphere. Colorful palette to help as visual aids of learning for children and adults. Vision paneled doors for easy viewing into and out of the classrooms and a visitor lounge area for parents waiting for their children in language classes. A successful venture with a limited budget and quick turnaround for a newly formed business now with grand offerings inside a large 3,000+ square foot storefront facility. Atelier Azara, charged with the task of designing this project, aimed at offering a sleek, straightforward and contemporary re-configuration of the interior spaces. Ideas that resounded favorably and appealing to the new owner. An open living and dining room along with a contemporary kitchen were carved out of the first level by removing unnecessary walls and creating a grand space that flows collectively. Without the benefit of high ceilings, this approach allowed for much needed clarity volumetrically and experientially. Vertical circulation was relocated from the interior to the outside allowing for supplementary spaces on both levels. The living quarters were rearranged to access the primary exterior views to the East and West, respectively as centered elements of the upper story. The support spaces flanked the exterior walls of the large sloped high roof and between the bedrooms.

This project is a gut-rehab of an old twostory + basement single family residence built in 1913. By all accounts, its architectural elements are clear, from a high pitched roof, exterior stucco, an enclosed entry porch, all indicative of the house barn style. Proving its old age stands a fully functioning water well in the rear yard dating well before modern day installation of city underground services. The home is nestled within the predictable American post-industrial city grid of 1960’s Chicago. It’s surrounded by single story ranch style homes and is by far unique as the tallest structure in sight. The house boasts a design distinctively at odds with its adjacent neighbors by color, texture and scale.

“Kay e Sante nan Ayiti “ HOUSING & HEALTH IN HAITI International Competition St Marc, Haiti
Concept There are a number of equally important conceptual goals of this project. One was to find a thoroughly modern language that speaks to deeply rooted Haitian urban and social traditions. It was also important to learn from past mistakes made by the building trades in Haiti while bringing new building traditions to the people of Haiti. Another goal was to meld active and passive approaches to sustainability into one flexible, scalable and recyclable solution that is both ecologically sound and economically viable. Health and Design Every aspect of the design was driven by the need to improve and/or maintain the health of the occupants. The low bar with the butterfly roof has been orientated to catch the breeze and provide natural ventilation for the sleeping modules. That same butterfly roof also functions as a water collector and solar collector mount. Also, its underside has been calibrated to funnel air across the beds of the sick. As air flows through the clerestory it will be disinfected. The roof form direct the current over the bed, up and out – once again getting a dose of UV irradiation thereby providing protection for those outside. The sleeping modules open out to a cascade of stairs that lead to an ample garden which offers both activity and contemplation. With the high garden wall and various screens the lush courtyard offers economic, ecological and emotional regeneration. In both physical and conceptual counterpoint, the living pavilion offers a breezy, high ceiling, shaded and easily cleaned indoor/outdoor, public/private transitional space that is flexible and functional.
