CARDBOARD ROCKING CHAIR This rocker was built for the annual American Institute of Architecture Students Cardboard Chair Competition. It is inspired by Shaker rocking chairs, not necessarily in form but in concept and function. For the Shaker people of New England, furniture construction was intimately intertwined with religious life. The utmost care was taken because

they were constructing on behalf of God. The rocker, in particular, was a place crafted for contemplation and prayer. Cardboard, as a material, is one of the most widely recognized symbols of recycling and reuse. It has its own particular smell, its own particular feel; it is a material we interact with almost every day, unwrapping a package or walking past a stack of boxes on the street. In building this rocker I looked to showcase the various characteristics of the material carefully weaving, stacking, and tearing to create a new space where we can sit, rock back-and-forth, and smelling the cardboard, perhaps contemplate material use and reuse, recycling and re-purposing.

This drawing is a horizontal section of my body, toilet and bathroom wall. The section looks at the relationship of the body with building infrastructures. In this particular case a discrete yet dependant systems that cycles water.

This hand-sewn tapestry employs an intimate visual narrative to addresses the global impact of deforestation as loose stitches hold together thin strips of wood. The work is made from discarded wood – hand planed, boiled, and sewn together in strips. Maps of the world, as viewed from the North and South Pole, are stitched on each end. The accompanying book is made from blank pages found in the begining and end of novels, it includes various quotes and statistics related to our forests.

Sound wave tower

This tower is a conceptual project in form generation. The structure of the tower is derived from a one second sound clip. The ‘waves’ of this clip were rotated and manipulated several times to create interlocking units that build upon each other.

Puncture began from studies of the American Flag. I was particularly interested in the Pledge of Allegiance, which was broadcast in my high school every morning. It was read by the principle from the main office and everyone was required to stand and face the flag at the front of the classroom. I began by diagramming and modeling the trajectory of sound from the main office and exploring how this ritual manifested in each room.
The study, Pledge Of Allegiance Map, is a handsewn diagram of Central Regional High School, Bayville, NJ. The threads represent the path of the pledge as projected over intercom, from the main office to the classrooms.

Vila Flavia is a favela of approximately 1,000 families located in the eastern periphery of the city of S達o Paulo, Brazil. While culturally vibrant, Vila Flavia has several infrastructural, ecological, and housing issues. Many of the

houses in the neighborhood are located against a central water corridor, currently an open sewer. There are also many houses, located in the center of the neighborhood that receive little to no light or ventilation.
Based on site visits, meetings with community leaders and terrain analysis we proposed a reurbanization project that primarily adressed three main areas: 1. To build upon the neighborhoods existing culture and social networks through the creation of new indoor
and outdoor public spaces. 2. To create new housing units that are integrated into the current urban fabric. 3. to clean the central waterway and create a linear park through the center of the neighborhood.

The Maypole Project began in the spring of 2007. Through collaborations and local partnerships, a neighborhood garden and community history mural were created for the residents of the 2600-2700 block of Maypole Avenue, on Chicago’s West Side. The garden and mural were designed by local high school students enrolled in Kidstart, a Chicago Public School’s Education to Careers Program. The project, curriculum, and class were developed and taught by myself and Brendan, the garden was installed by students and volunteers, and the mural was painted by myself, Brendan, and volunteers.

The Coletivo de Arte do Bamburral is an art collective in operation since 2008 in the Bamburral favela in S達o Paulo, Brazil. In collaboration with community leaders from the neighborhood, Kristine Stiphany and myself organize activities the Coletivo. The aim of the Coletivo is to register and act upon one of the most intense parts of the urban environment through drawing, photography, video, installation, and intervention led by young residents. By cultivating an understanding of place we make room for architects to co-create spaces and landscapes that are truly connected to social infrastructures. photography and video

REAL Housing is a diverse collective of people working together from several different countries to explore spontaneous design practices, optimize the intelligence of artists, designers, makers and users to effectively design creative interventions, skill share, and seek a middle ground between top-down and bottom-up systems. The project is located in the Guilherme Zaneti public housing complex in IgaraĂ, Brazil, a small rural farming town in Northwestern SĂŁo Paulo state. Guilherme Zaneti has been locally nicknamed the $1.99 complex – fifty-seven identical two-bedroom homes, built without paved sidewalks, bus stops, or public gathering spaces. REAL Housing is an ongoing design and construction initiative that utilizes social networking and video sharing as participatory design and collective cultural production strategy. REAL Housing aims to create a pedagogical framework to bring NGOs, universities, government and people together to collectively envision creative solutions for public housing and shared community spaces, and, to further our knowledge of high and low technologies, sustainability, design participation with, by, and for residents, environmental education and social justice.
