Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Kappa Lambda Omega Chapter

Dear Parents, On behalf of the members of Kappa Lambda Omega Chapter, I greet you with much anticipation and excitement as we embark on our 12th Biennial Little Miss AKA Pageant. We are excited that you have chosen to allow your daughter to be a part of such a rewarding experience and the chapter's major fundraising event. The 2010 LMAKA Pageant will provide an enriching experience for the young ladies participating in the pageant. The contestants will have the opportunity to meet other young ladies and form lasting friendships. She will be involved in stimulating workshops, an enriching field trip, and attend a fun filled picnic. As a parent you will be proud of your daughter as she makes her debut into society during the pageant presentation on November 13, 2010. Preparations for this debut will come through the planned programs and practices that will take place during the months to follow. The funds generated from the LMAKA Pageant assist our chapter in providing important community services to the greater Nashville community. The chapter implement programs in the areas of education, health, the black family, entrepreneurship, senior citizens, and the arts. Locally, we provide assistance to the Nashville Rescue Mission, Home Mission Haven, Special Olympics, Breast Cancer awareness, and make contributions to the NAACP and UNCF. Our major contribution is in the area of scholarships to deserving African American high school students. Thanks to parents, like you, Kappa Lambda Omega is able to fulfill our goal in giving back to the community through funds generated by the solicitation of ads and the sale of tickets to the LMAKA Pageant. In all our efforts, we are truly grateful to you for your daughter's participation. The members of Kappa Lambda Omega look forward to working with you and your daughter. If you require further assistance, feel free to contact the pageant chairs. May God bless and keep you. Sincerely,

Treva Young Smith President

Little Miss AKA Pageant The Little Miss AKA Pageant is the vision of Kappa Lambda Omega Chapter member Mary Walker and former KLO member Vanzetta Whitaker. The first pageant was held in 1988, in which Mary Walker served as the first chairman. The pageant has become the primary biennial fundraiser for the chapter. Through support from the contestants, parents, members and community, more than $100,00.00 in scholarships have been awarded to deserving college-bound African American women. Today. the pageant remains a biennial event, and has expanded its fundraising focus to support other important service projects, including conducting economic empowerment workshops, providing awareness to health related issues that impact our community, food and clothing drives for the homeless and programs for elderly residents at its adopted residence Home Mission Haven. Since 1988, the pageant has grown significantly touching the lives of hundreds of young people through self-esteem and leadership development activities and programs. The pageant provides young girls, between the ages of 7 and 12, with positive role models, enrichment activities and encouragement. The event is also known for showcasing the diverse talent of Music City USA as well as highlighting the city’s future leaders. Events leading up to pageant night include a series of workshops on self-esteem, etiquette, and leadership development. The contestants are also culturally enlightened during planned field trips to museums and landmarks across the city, and are treated to a special Mother-Daughter Luncheon. In addition, participation has dramatically increased from young men serving as escorts to the contestants. As a result, the chapter has added an Escorts Workshop featuring local African American businessmen and community leaders to speak to the young men about manners, being a gentleman, career choices and other relevant topics. The escorts also shine during the actual pageant by offering their own entertaining performance. The LMAKA pageant is not all work and play as a LMAKA Festival, hosted by KLO, is held for contestants, escorts and their families. Eleven young ladies have been crowned Little Miss AKA over the years. Each winner receives a savings bond to assist them with future educational endeavors, along with other special gifts and recognition throughout the year. All the young ladies who participate in the pageant receive small trophies and certificates acknowledging their participation. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
