I did this project during the first year of the masters program in the Strasbourg school of architecture. The “Urban Studio� project was to imagine the city of Strasbourg in year 2050 as if temperatures had risen by 5 degrees Celsius and was in a cataclysmic state. Due to these conditions, the studio project was to be designed in a flood zone, taking into consideration the challenge presented by the water situation. I also partnered with a water engineer to find an ideal solution to this problem, which is becoming ever-present in our future. The project area, Le Elsau, is a sensitive area of the city. People live here in precarious situations, developed as urbanization projects in the reconstruction after WWII. There is sectorial organization of the neighborhood, with living quarters essentially being dormitories. Consequentially, there is not a cultural identity of the neighborhood except a reputation of danger, though the ample green spaces show a lot of potential. Throughout the semester I attempted to design an attractive area of the neighborhood, creating an identity while allowing residents to maintain their lifestyle. The train line acts to define one aspect of the space. The train here passes by without stopping, connecting the city to outlying countryside. As such, I designed the train to carry fruits, vegetables, grains, and other crops from the countryside with the goal of creating an urban farm. The urban farm concept solves the issue of future food sustainability for the area, allowing self-sufficient vertical gardens to continue to flourish in the event of floods. Also, there will be a green zone linking the neighborhood with central Strasbourg, in aim of increasing their connection via pedestrian walks and bike lanes. An added idea is to create more instillations within the neighborhood to reduce the displacement caused originally by cars. I tried to propose most importantly a maximum distance of 500 meters for each neighborhood resident. In this way, they can shop, go to work and school, and maintain a daily life all within only 500 meters from their home. The project searches for a new life style in consideration of the future challenges of our planet. 12

STATUS

URBAN PLANNING PROJECT

I did this project in the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The exercise was developed in the island of Zeeburgereiland, where there were only 3 routes of connection with the rest of Amsterdam. The island is completely empty, occupied only by 3 silos left over from the industrial period. The studio objective was to project an urbanism plan for the entire island, including programs, attractive zones, and residences to give the island new life. We worked in groups of three to brainstorm ideas, though each one of us separately made a development plan driven by previous similar examples, then we collaborated to compare which had most suitable circulation, installations, and quality of life. After comparison, we select one of the ideas and develop further as a team the urbanization plan. After the decision of the general project plan, each team member develops their own building complex and public space. My proposition is located in the low-lying part of the island, allowing a connection to be made between the low altitude zone of single family homes with the zone at mid level of laminar buildings. Thus creating a transit zone between the two levels. The complex is composed of four tiers of various heights that organizes green zones and plazas. It has both residential and commercial uses. The small piece perpendicular to the complex has timely access to the residences in the upper part of the island. It contains businesses and a common room in the lower part. The other longitudinal piece placed at the plot boundary and is also well connected, but is only for residential use. The other pieces of shorter heights have a covered garden deck with direct access via gateways on the first floor of the buildings. The movement within the complex is through pedestrian walks, allowing crossing east-west passing by the gardens and the parking. The parking is integrated through a slope that extends the garden area and connects in the south to the sidewalk. The other zone with shops is connected by a small public plaza. 20

This exercise focuses in the problems of public building and its relationship to its environment. In the beginning I conducted surveys to understand the atmosphere of the neighborhood and the primary needs of its inhabitants. I discovered that it was a community lacking areas for children and that there were many elderly people. My goal was to bring as many young people and families together with an attractive program and economical flats. The low cost can be attributed to the other larger, more expensive flats. In this way the program is mixed, also including a nursery. Afterwards, I tried to slightly alter the attitudes of the inhabitants to foster the spirit of sharing through communal zones, sized for better daily use. Another feature is community greenhouses atop each building, in which residents will create their own mini-city including fruits and vegetables. All crops could be stored in a common room, with an area for food preservation that could also be transformed into a party room or rented to garner more income for the community. The undulating form of the project is designed to capture sunlight throughout the day, and the balconies change position according to the function of the space to optimize sunshine access. Almost all of the flats have a double orientation—with the exception of the studio apartments, which benefit from having only one. The structural aspect of the project is seen in the extremities, i.e. there are no bearing piles in each block. The connection to the water network is through a central installation in each flat block, which permits change between separate flats if needed. The project aims to create a new idea of living with others and responds to the demands of population growth. 28

AU TRAVERS DU FLUX PROJECT

TECHNICAL PROJECT IN WOOD

This is the last exercise of my first year project. This project was linked with the lesson « Wood structure in building ». I have learnt some issues like the maintenance of load-bearing walls. The aim of this exer cise was conceiving an informative pavilion in town. First we had to do a study of the square where we wanted to set up the pavilion. Then we had to meet the need of an informative point, an entrance, a welcome bank, a space which allows the territory promotion and an exhibition garden with some trees and a bench. When I have studied the « Place Broglie », I became aware of the fact that it is a very big square, very elongated and mostly narrow. The project had to talk with this square. Moreover, there is a lot of traffic. So we had to let some place for people who want to run quickly but also to remind without blocking the way. So I decided to put my building in the width way and at one end of the square, like this it allowed a flowing circulation all over the square. Nevertheless I also wanted an area of tension caused by the crossing and alternate circulation in the building’s outskirts, that’s why I place small log cabins around the pavilon. It created a buffer zone. These buildings guid people’s crossing or call to mind and bring the person in the direction of the building. Therefore the building block partially the entrance of the square but let also a pathway. Its spaces are crossing. The pavilon is made with wood and its load-bearings structure too. There is an access for hadicapped persons thanks to ramps. From the garden, there is point of views on all the rest of the building because the interior space is visible from the exterior thanks to an aleatory slat disposal system between the 2 load-bearings posts.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP PROJECT

This project reproduce my work in a workshop at Naples. The subject was the Leviathan. Why the Leviathan ? The Leviathan is a concept linked to the Bigness theorized by Rem Koolhass which is applyable to big architectural objects We began our analysis with these concepts in mind for understand what is the Bigness or Grandezza in Naples. According to our analysis of the city, we deduced that Naples is the Leviathan and there wasn’t any possible building which would be more impressive than the complexity of the city. Naples constitues the Leviathan. Indeed, the city is a complex set of streets, traffics and architectures. However, it is unified through the pavement of the soil, because it’s homogeneous and can be found everywhere in the city. This continuity is also reinforced by the fact that this pavement extends on the bedrocks, the thresholds, the stairs and the religious monuments. One of the caracteristics of Naples is the cohabitation between the sacred and the profane that we see everywhere. We find in this city a lot of churches and place of worship but also a lot of oratories, that seem participate at the architecture of the monuments. Even more, the streets of Naples are animated by the exteriorization of the intimate life; the Neapolitans life on the thresholds and inhabit the mews. The sidewalks become terraces and balconies are used to extend the clothes. Our wish translate itself by a kind of a couture of the city, of its ruins and hollow teeth. The project consists then in an addition of small interventions, interpretated as urban salons. The public space is domesticated. We extend the inside outside, and like this we offer to the Neapolitans spaces with differences spheres. Those one translate hemselves as conviviality spaces, “petits chez-soi”. 44

Currently the city center and the townships are connected in one unique point : Warwick Junction. Railways creates a gap between the two parts of Durban. What is seen as a handicap could be transform into a advantage. The limit is not just a break point, for us it is ‘’Otherwhere’’.

We didn’t want to change the strength of the area which is the diversity of population and architecture. On the other hand, we preferred re-used the structures already built and just change the program. For instance, big abandoned depot will become places of agricultural storage or recycling factory.

Our ambition is to create visual, physical and economical links thanks to sustainability and a new way of using the limit. Little by little we transform the abandoned areas around the railways into teaching and farming zones. For instance, we established various fields and shared garden as green laboratories and fabrics.

All this big vision will starts with little interventions. D(urban) Drawers will be built on strategic points which will act as catalysts. One D(urban) Drawers will works as a place to meet, to share, to chill, to sparkle following the hour of the day and the needs of people. Everyone can appropriate this new spot. It’s easy to transform and recreate. When several ‘’boxes’’ are combined, they form other functions, such as little drive in theatre, stage, or point of reference in the city, few of them which could transform into bar by night have a connection with water system. More than anything the D(urban) Drawers is a means of communication in order to inform and to make inhabitants sensitive to new sustainable issues.

Nevertheless, we don’t forget the importance of social and cultural areas, that’s why we decided to create porosity in the cemetery with pathways in order to open this sacred area to everybody. All those interventions are linked thanks to the green railways, that’s why it will impact on the urban landscape. We will reinforce this green breath which starts in Warwick Junction to the beach and the botanic area with tree-filled avenue. Those new ways will promote a more sustainable means of transport. Indeed, give more space for pedestrians and cyclists to the detriment of cars. In the North of the area we will develop a multimodal point in the actual bus station. We put various Parking in existing buildings.

In each ‘’box’’ a user manual will be put in order to give the chance to copy and develop our intervention. That’s why the D(urban) Drawer is made for the main part of low cost materials, such as recycled wood. The structural part is built in concrete or rammed earth. Our ambition was to preserve the characteristics of Warwick Junction using people dynamism.
