DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR Kent Nelson Klein High School
I didn’t expect to take three years of Spanish with Sr. Nelson when I first walked into his class sophomore year. I broadened my vocabulary and understanding of Spanish not through boring lectures or worksheets but through articles on VeinteMundos, oral presentations, and video skits. Sr. Nelson entertains us by playing songs on his guitar, sharing stories of fishing trips with his friends and his vacations to Spain and Latin American countries, and showing videos of him surfing. When we read a poem or story, he not only explains the meaning of the work but also creates a real life connection to the theme to teach us life lessons. Everything that Sr. Nelson has taught me for the past three years, from Spanish to his life lessons, is something that I can use in the future and will always cherish and remember. He taught me how to embrace and appreciate the language and culture and helped me gain a different outlook on life through his teaching. ¥Gracias por todo que ha hecho!

I have had the pleasure of having Mrs. Hermsdorf as a teacher for two years. Her passion for both teaching and chemistry far surpasses the normal educator. Her enthusiasm for chemistry shines through with each lesson she teaches; what shines brighter, however, is her care for the lives of her students. On more than just a level of ionic bonds and atomic numbers, Mrs. Hermsdorf and I connected on a personal level. Chemistry is not one of my favorite subjects by any means. But what makes Mrs. Hermsdorf so special to me is what she has taught me beyond academics. She instilled values of self-confidence, kindness, and perseverance in me at my hardest times and reminded me that downfalls are a part of the journey to success. I know for a fact that my high school experience wouldn’t be the same without her. Mrs. Hermsdorf, words cannot truly express all that you’ve done for me. The knowledge, both personal and technical, that’s been imparted in me by my time in your class has been invaluable and unable to replicate.

A coach. A teacher. An advisor. An inspiration. Coach Cannon has been all of these to me and so much more. Her excitement about how chemical reactions work is contagious, and over the years, I have definitely contracted the love-of-chemistry disease. I owe my enthusiasm for science to her chemistry class where I truly discovered that the real world applications of aggravating chemistry problems actually interested me. It is her faith in my intellectual ability that has encouraged me to pursue my goal of becoming a chemical engineer. As a coach, she has imparted in me the importance of perseverance and commitment to a team and a goal. Losing a match after playing hours in incredible heat or freezing cold is devastating. However, Coach Cannon has taught me that tennis is not just about winning or losing but about the experience of the game and self-improvement. Managing homework and practice was a constant struggle, but her patience has enabled me to succeed in both learning and playing. I’m proud to have been both her student and her athlete.

“Take all four counts to breathe…” Anyone who’s in the Klein Marching Band, or who has even happened to pass by during rehearsal outside on the steaming asphalt, has more than likely heard these words from Mr. Lambrecht over the “loud thing”, the microphone. What, though, made this phrase in particular stick with me? Perhaps, after four years in the Texas sun, these words of wisdom have been so deeply chiseled into the marble slab of my mind through the diligent, painstaking repetition that comes with band practice that it’s likely no wind or rain could ever wash them away. Or, perhaps, these words hold a deeper meaning. On the surface, Mr. Lambrecht is telling us all to expand our lungs and to take in as much air as we possibly can so that, when we finally play that first note, we’ll produce a rich, resonant sound. But underneath it all, I believe, Mr. Lambrecht was trying to teach us to do the most with the time that we’ve been given. Well, it’s been a long road and a long time but through it all I’ve learned to cooperate with others, to come out of my socially-awkward shell, and to enjoy the experience more obsessively focusing on the goal. So, thank you Mr. Lambrecht and thank you to the entire Klein High Band. I can promise you all that I won’t forget a single count as I step forward into this next stage of my life.

Combining a personal approach to the traditional topical lecture, Ms. Breeding keeps her class interesting and informative. Any doubts I had about the value of literature were instantly swept away upon experiencing her personal style of connecting the issues of today’s fast paced society with the written works of eons past. Aside from her clear passion for her subject, Ms. Breeding never fails to impress me with her compassion for her students. She has a razor sharp intuition regarding the feelings of her students, never failing to brighten one’s day with her warm exterior and witty humor. Indeed her empathy for the personal issues of her learners has always struck me as remarkably sincere. Ms. Breeding’s unique and touching combination of passion and genuine interest in the success of her students has made her a favorite of mine. She ignited a genuine appreciation within me for the study of language, relating it to the reality of my own human experience. I know now the power that literature has, how it brings an immediacy and emotional response to topics that one might not have considered previously. She opened my mind to the art of language while touching my heart with her art of pedagogy.

In the three years that Coach Ramirez has been my soccer coach, he has not only prepared me for a sport but also for life. He has taught me the importance of persevering in order to achieve my goals and shown me that, even when you are working hard, there is still time for fun. But what separates Coach Ramirez from other coaches is his genuine interest in the well-being of his players. From spontaneous stops at Chickfil-A after big wins to tirelessly working to make sure we have a place to practice on rainy days, he goes above and beyond what is required of a coach. This passion radiates through the team— boosting morale and motivating us to strive for things we never dreamed possible. Allen Peach described in one word: authentic. Not only does Mr. Peach teach biology well, which I used to think was full of just “memorizing terms and classification,” his teaching is very entertaining. He provides us with hands on experience and just as importantly, real life examples. For example, I fondly remember Mr. Peach telling us why bananas last longer if they are separated. Examples like these brought the excitement out of the classroom and into the practical world, teaching us that biology isn’t just something “you’ll never use,” but rather something always around you. Mr. Peach furnishes a comfortable, genuine environment conducive to learning that encourages considerable bona fide critical thinking. From learning how to study well to time management, the depth of knowledge I have gained from Mr. Peach’s education environment has been 100% genuine. Even though I don’t plan on pursuing biology, I’ve fostered a legitimate appreciation for it, and I know for a fact that the life skills I’ve learned from Mr. Peach will positively and profoundly impact my life.

While I never did have Ms. Haggard as an actual student in one of her classes, what I have learned from her is absolutely priceless. Not only has she taught me valuable things that will prepare me for my future career, she has also taught me numerous valuable life skills. From our daily conversations during lunch to the encouragement during the intense moments preparing for competition, my relationship with Ms. H is rare and one of a kind, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Ms. Haggard has most certainly become one of my best friends and closest confidants. She is definitely one of the strongest people I will EVER meet, and if I turn out to be even a fraction of who she is, I will have been successful in life. There is no way I could ever repay her for all that she has done for me, but I pray that our friendship will always be this strong because quite frankly, I don’t know what I would do without her. I began learning from Ms. Mallery since day one of freshman year through my participation in Mu Alpha Theta and as her Pre-Calculus and Calculus student. In simplest terms, she is a truly remarkable woman with such passion and enthusiasm for math. She’s helped us achieve the best not only in the context of math but also in our development through high school. With all the stories that she has to tell and the advice that she has to give, I learn something new every day. She takes genuine interest in the needs of her students and doesn’t hesitate to spend hours after school with us. One of the things I love most about Ms. Mallery is her style of teaching. Her lectures help me realize the theory, reasoning, and logic behind each ‘sexy’ formula. Thank you, Ms. Mallery, for all that you’ve helped me become and for instilling within me a love for math that I hope to take forward. I’m not sure how many times I tied her shoes together, but I do know that Mrs. Baird made a tremendous impact on my life. Her fourth grade class was always exciting, from dissecting owl pellets to holiday parties. Mrs. Baird, Miss Kline back in the day, always encouraged her students to explore their creativity. I was once so inspired by her enthusiasm that, despite my lack of artistic ability, I labored meticulously for an hour drawing a cloud for art appreciation. I wanted to keep exploring, so I joined her Destination Imagination team. She taught me how to think outside the box, and to make wise decisions on the fly. Under her amazing leadership, our team advanced to state both years. Mrs. Baird clearly loved her students. She always made sure we understood the material, genuinely cared about us, and wasn’t annoyed when I played with her shoes during story time. I may have been a little rascal when I had (Ms. Kline) Mrs. Baird, but I’ll never forget the impact she made on my life.

A cookie and a smoothie. That’s what I used to try and butter up my counselor for Mrs. Perez. And while I understand that it might not be the most ethical practice, bribing the administration with fast food, I was hard pressed that the only way I was going to get credit on the AP English test was by enrolling in her class like my older sister did; only to be cursing bitterly about ever buying that cookie as the year proceeded. Weekly essays, multiple choice Mondays, The Scarlett Letter, that dreaded Huckleberry Finn project, and those extra credit Economist summaries that became a defibrillator to my flat lining grade was junior English for me. But today, if I were to be asked if I would have done anything different that year, I would say no. Because when Mrs. Perez isn’t doing her football tackle to stop fights, being heard two classrooms down the hallway, or taping up a chromatic dissonance for her bulletin board, she is unapologetically audacious, so whimsically human, and universally caring. She has taught me to define my ambitions and identity without fear of being reprimanded. She isn’t your generic “passionate about (fill in the subject)” teacher. She isn’t your crafty, flowers n’ hearts teacher. She’s brutally honest, theatrically warming, and everything that isn’t your 90’s sitcom teacher. And that’s what makes her arguably the best one I could have ever asked for.

When I first walked through the front doors of Klein Forest, dazed and confused, as a naïve freshman, I had no idea of what was in store for my future. Before meeting Ms. Hernandez, I never knew of the opportunities I had right in front of me. She allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and explore a different side of my personality as a student and a person. At the end of my freshman year, I remember wavering about my decision to continue in the AVID program and enroll in advanced placement classes. Although unintentional, Ms. Hernandez cast a spell on me with her statement, “You’re staying, and I won’t let you leave my class!” From that moment on, I only strive for nothing but success as an AVID student graduating with honors. Ms. Hernandez has been more than an educator, she has been a significant inspiration in my life. But in reality, he was astounded by the work ethic I illustrated. Joining the Computer Science Club the following year was joining the melting pot that I called family with Mr. Mundo as our head. In my first year of French, never did I imagine that I would actually call Madame Watson “MADAME Watson.” It would always be “Ms. Watson” because the word “Madame” sounded so strange. Nevertheless, the name by which I called her quickly changed. It transitioned from “Ms. Watson”, to “Madame Watson”, to “Madamalama”, and even to accidentally calling her “Mom”. The closer and more comfortable I got with her, the more her name varied. Madame would claim to be mean and cruel, but she never was – not even one bit! She has always been a loving, positive, caring, and kind person. When I needed help and guidance, French related or personal, her door was always open and her heart always accepting. She has been a great supporter in my life and I can’t thank her enough for it. She has not only influenced my education, but has also been a great spiritual leader and role model for me. When I signed up to take physics as a junior, I believed this was going to be the hardest and dullest of all my classes. However, Dr. LaFave quickly changed my mind. Every day in class he would make physics a subject that I looked forward to. I will never forget his lesson over swag and circular motion. The way he said his famous “good luck” phrase in a pirate voice right before we took a test would always make me smile. Any one of his students can tell you that he is a teacher that truly cares about his student’s future. Dr. LaFave would constantly tell our class how education and hard work is the path for future success. It is because of his influence and encouragement that my interest in engineering and science grew. He will always be a great person to talk to about anything from science to trivia. I still remember clearly the first day I walked into the Orchestra room at Klein Forest. I had one ambition, to learn how to play an instrument. Fortunately, Mrs. Morlacci was very helpful in making it happen. She made sure I could sign up for private lessons with a teacher who would be able to help me catch up with the rest of the orchestra as soon as possible. She also paid a lot of attention to my progress during class to ensure I wasn’t learning things the wrong way. She has encouraged and pushed me to play music harder than I thought I could, and it made me realize how far I can go as long as I try. Playing in the Chamber Orchestra, which I didn’t even dream of doing when I started, became reality. Throughout the three and a half years in Orchestra, I’ve been able to see how passionate she is about music. Through her teaching, she passes her love for music onto her students. I’m grateful to have been able join Orchestra and learn music under Mrs. Morlacci’s direction.

“Spread like mayonnaise!” If it were not for Mrs. Gainey, I would have never associated dance formations to a sandwich ingredient. From the antagonizing extraneous periods of stretches to the sound of the bell alerting that there was no time to change, every minute spent dancing and every breath that Mrs. Gainey took to shout “One more time!” confided a new perseverance in me. It was the kind of perseverance that whether or not I might have been struggling in one thing, I just kept on dancing. Teaching a hip-hop class full of hormoneraging boys with bare hip-hop experience is already daunting as it seems, but her effort is effortlessly courageous. Mrs. Gainey would always put her best foot forward in designing new choreography pieces and helping the peers who constantly struggle to strive to become a better dancer. Mrs. Gainey might not hesitate to send students out of the dance room for misbehaving, but that just signifies how important dance is to her life. Her sense of humor recharges us and keeps us moving forward. Our cello section is a force to be reckoned with thanks to Ms. Arnold, but I always secretly hope that they will mess up just enough to make her bring out Bubba and show us how it’s done. Math has always been my favorite subject and in my junior year, I had the opportunity of having Ms. Tollett who deepened my love for math. I always encourage people at school to take Calculus because Ms. Tollett is such a great teacher and role model. Her dedication to teaching is evident since she can often be found staying after school tutoring or grading papers. She has also given up a couple Saturdays to help us prepare for the AP test. She is very positive and thinking back, there was never a day where she didn’t teach with a smile. Even today, a year after taking her class, I can remember the quotient rule thanks to a song that follows the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” Small things like receiving stickers for As on my tests encouraged me and the many study sessions made me confident that I could do well on the AP test. From her many years of teaching, she knows exactly what students need to pass the AP test and her enthusiasm and support enabled me to get a 5 on the AP test. One of my biggest regrets in high school is not getting to know Mrs. Watson sooner. Although I have only had the chance to know her for one ridiculously short year, I can see her depth of knowledge in Psychology in every lecture, and her true sense of compassion for all of her students. Not only does she make it her personal mission to help every student succeed, she does so with the livelihood of her constantly spirited demeanor in which everyone can be comfortable around. Throughout my academic career, I have been blessed to receive a quality education from a multitude of exemplary teachers, but it is quite rare that I am able to cross paths with someone that I can truly connect with and feel comfortable around. I have always found the processes of the human mind to be quite alluring, but after taking Mrs. Watson’s AP Psychology course, I have never felt more sure of choosing a career path in my chosen field. I’ve been on Mr. Rice’s UIL Math team for 4 years, and I can certainly say that his dedication to the team, whether it be picking up our trophies, or taking us to state-wide competitions, is unparalleled. From freshman to junior year, I had always sought to be in one of his math classes, and this year, I got the chance to have back-to-back periods with him. Two hours of Calculus, probability, and trigonometry, filled with proofs that finally taught me the reasons behind math. “That’s me” replies would become a norm, as I would continually hope that he’d finally answer the questions I had on homework assignments. As lame as his sense of humor could be, I enjoyed every day of his class. Additionally, I had the privilege of being the President of the club he sponsored: Mu Alpha Theta. The amount of mistakes I have made will never be forgotten, as he would scold me for each and every one of them. The first time I met Mrs. Camerino - or as we call her, “Cam” - was as an eighth grader trying out for freshman cheer. I did not know it at the time, but every year Cam does her best to intimidate the freshmen. And every year, it works. At the first cheer practice, I could not fathom how the older girls could joke with her and give her sass. Now, this is second nature to me. Cam was also my geometry teacher freshman year. She always went above and beyond to ensure that every student fully understood the lesson and she never got annoyed with me for persistently asking questions. In her class, I first discovered my inclination for math and realized that problem solving was rewarding. Throughout the past four years, Cam has impacted me beyond my formal education by teaching me valuable lessons that I know I will carry with me the rest of my life. Every year on the first day of school, when a student walks into Cam’s class, they are not only gaining an exceptional teacher, but a great role model as well. Since freshman year, Cam has joked that I had to take her to the “Top Ten” Dinner. I would have it no other way.

In these countless pencil markings, she offered incredible insight into the strengths and weakness of not only my ideas but also my writing. I learned to be deliberate both in forming and presenting ideas and to leave no line of inquiry unturned because of her unwavering crusade to make her students the best thinkers they could be. The skills and confidence she fermented in me translated to success in other disciplines as well. In the sciences, her tips on developing an idea through the written word made drawing conclusions simple, and in history, her respect for intellectual diversity made it much easier to understand opposing perspectives. “Settle down!” Ms. Shasteen would say with the bang of her gavel. It was how she calmed the chaos in our English class. Ms. Shasteen quickly became my source of motivation and support. She gave me confidence in my writing, reading, ideas, and interpretations and emboldened the spirits of all her students. Before I entered high school, I had heard rumors about how much harder the classes were going to be, especially the dreaded Biology Pre-IB course with the so-called hardest teacher ever, Mrs. Fabian. I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t scared when I walked into seventh period on the first day of school. How bad could this teacher be? Weeks went by and I failed to see what the rumors were about. Mrs. Fabian was awesome! The way she taught her class was far different from anything that I had ever experienced before. Yes, the work was difficult but her ability to push her students in wanting to achieve success showed me how hard work and dedication can truly separate me from the rest of my peers. Those few weeks have turned into 3 years in her biology class and I enjoy every day as I learn something new, something exciting. Her teaching ability can only be matched by her ability to bake, as her brownies and peanut butter clusters are worth the stress of her endless tests.

Mr. Tumlinson influenced my life by changing the approach I take to learning. He constantly challenges his students to think creatively, expand their vocabulary, and do more than just memorize the facts. His class was always more engaging for me than other classes because it was structured around discussion and writing, as opposed to a myriad of quizzes and daily work. Even though I had his class 1st period and was still struggling to wake up, his sense of humor and unique teaching style always grabbed my attention. Also, he always did a good job of relating U.S. History to things I know and understand like sports or pop culture. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the material so I could show up to class with something to contribute to the conversation. He made me realize that my mission is about the pursuit of knowledge and not just maintaining a certain GPA. He changed the way I looked at learning about history and distinguished himself as one of the most influential teachers in my high school years.

Teacher, mentor, and friend are several ways I can describe Mrs. Aries. Her passion for math has manifested to teaching full time and tutoring five hours a day. She is the definition of a math superhero. I have had the pleasure of being tutored by Mrs. Aries for over two years now, and she is the sole reason for the math student I am today. I will never forget when I told her I was aiming for a 95 and she answered, “You can make a 100.� Countless times she has seen the potential in me that I could not see in myself. From talking about our day to arguing about a math problem, there is never a dull moment. Mrs. Aries is witty, brilliant, and has no problems saying when I am wrong. Ms. Modrzejewski—better known as Ms. Mo—was my teacher for AP English Language my junior year. She is by far one of the most engaging, understanding, and thorough teachers I have ever had. Her class was one of the highlights of my day during my junior year, and I still visit her room some mornings before school. It was in Ms. Mo’s class that the most interesting book discussions of my high school career took place, and even though I was endlessly frustrated by the AP-style multiple choice tests, Ms. Mo prepared me well for the English Language Advanced Placement exam. In addition to this, she is also one of the easiest teachers to talk to. Ms. Mo is a truly amazing, caring teacher, one that I am so lucky to have had. I will always remember her class fondly, and I am so excited to have the chance to share this academic banquet with her.

More than being the sweetest lady in the world, Mrs. Rushing is also the most knowledgeable. If you said that someone knew more about chemistry than Mrs. Rushing, then you would just be wrong. Not only does she teach you everything you need to know to be successful, but she also answers every question you throw at her. Really. Go ask her right now. She never stops my so-called “stream of consciousness,” and this is what makes her the best teacher at Klein Oak, nay, in the world. She has only ever fed my hunger for knowledge, and is always willing to help or offer her chemical expertise, even in answering the most trivial questions. Mrs. Rushing affected my desire to study chemistry a major way, and there is no doubt in my mind that she will continue to affect other students for years to come—or at least until she discovers Rushingonium.

Señora Cue, in the three years I have had her as a teacher, has completely altered the way I view not only the Spanish language, but my entire perspective on school and learning as well. Every day she brings to the classroom a wonderful sense of humor and positivity that reminds me that no matter what happens in life, you can always find something to laugh about (especially if it’s at yourself). More than this, she has shown that she is not just our teacher, but one of our closest friends. She never hesitates to share in our happiness or to lift us up when we’re down. Because of this, I will always remember her as not only being a terrific teacher, but being one of the most genuine and caring people I have ever met, who has instilled in me qualities that I will carry for the rest of my life. Mrs. Trujillo was my Freshman English teacher who was the first to tell me I had something special instilled in me. She not only sparked my creativity and imagination, but also expanded it. I remember her teaching me numerous lessons, from grammar and diction, to patience and persistence. Not only was she an educator who enhanced my learning, changed my perspective of education, and inspired me to achieve the achievable, but also an adult that I could without a doubt count on to listen to me and understand my thoughts. She truly was my mother figure at school, and I can not thank her enough for that. Brad Henry says “a good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.” However, that is an understatement. If that is what a good teacher is, then Mrs. Trujillo is nothing short of a great one.

The greatest teachers are those who have a true passion for the subject they teach. Ms. Templeman is no exception. Her lectures are punctuated with interesting facts, humorous stories, and quirky jokes that reveal her knowledge and love for Chemistry. Science has always been my favorite subject. My two years with Ms. Templeman and her infectious energy has deepened that appreciation. Chemistry is filled with seemingly dull, complicated subjects but Ms. Templeman finds ways to make them not only interesting but understandable. Her classes are still by no means easy. Ms. Templeman sets high standards for all of her students. Throughout my Sophomore year, her name was synonymous with quizzes. Senior year, I learned that older students had not been exaggerating when they claimed AP Chem was brutal. But every challenge has its rewards. Finishing a lab report on time or setting the curve on a test gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment more powerful than any I had felt in other classes. Ms. Templeman has shown me that every challenge is worth facing, no matter how difficult.

Walking into Pre-AP Physics the first day of my sophomore year, I was quiet and lacked self-confidence. Coming out of AP physics two years later, I was the exact opposite. It’s hard to attribute Schulz’s influence on one single quality. As a teacher, he always has a sense of order and flexibility amidst the chaos that defines highschoolers. As a friend, his unique sense of humor knows no bounds. As a tutor, he’s always patient and eager to push students to understand with certainty how something works, even if it takes weeks. Putting all of these traits together, I learned a lot about what it took to do well in advanced college courses. Schulz’s class taught me the importance of studying for the sake of understanding and how fascinating the world around us truly is. His creative learning style, ranging from cardboard boat races to humorous PowerPoints to toothpick contraptions that save eggs from two-story drops, opened my eyes and offered me experiences that I will carry and remember for the rest of my life. Taking Latin as my foreign language was the best decision I made in high school. Most people take four years of a foreign language for the college credit, but I took Latin all four years of high school because of Mr. Drugan. Mr. Drugan’s ability to connect instantly with his students and his undeniable love for the subject that he teaches has inspired me greatly. I view him as a role model for the type of teacher I want to be someday. He is able to transform a classroom into a safe, warm environment that students look forward to visiting every day. He makes the study of a language that hasn’t been spoken for hundreds of years comical and exciting. He works harder than any other teacher I’ve ever seen, dedicating so much of his time to his students that he often leaves little time for himself. His selfless attitude and his humorous outlook on life put me in a good mood every day. I am blessed to have met a teacher as extraordinary as Mr. Drugan.

Mrs. Kim Drain is more than an educator--she is an inspiration. Stumbling through my freshman year, I found not only stability in Mrs. Drain’s teachings but also a sense of safety and compassion in her personality. Strict yet understanding, particular yet lenient, candid yet gentle, professional yet open-hearted, Mrs. Drain sparked within me a fascination for literature. My junior year, the woman who first enchanted me with the wonders of the English language praised my writing skills and encouraged me to submit an essay to a competition. That acknowledgement, that faith in my abilities and in the concept that I could achieve some level of greatness, astonished me. Mrs. Drain’s confidence in my writing incited a new hope for what I could do; it created the belief that I could pursue anything as long as I believed in myself. Mrs. Abshire is one of those teachers that really knows how to make kids feel good about themselves. I remember when I first got my PSAT results back and I had done particularly well in English. I decided to tell Mrs. Abshire and she responded that she wasn’t surprised at all. Whenever I am around Mrs. Abshire I feel smart and like I can do anything I put my mind to. She knows how to connect with her students in a positive way that makes even the biggest English haters love her class. She encouraged me to be the best student I could be and really helped me with anything that I struggled with without making me feel silly for struggling. She pushed me and my fellow students to the fullest and told us that as long as we tried, we would succeed in her class, college, and anything else we dreamed up.

Prior to taking Sra. Richardson’s class, I was completely unfamiliar with the Spanish language. However, shortly after I began taking her class, I fell in love with the Spanish language, and also developed a passion for learning languages in general. Sra. Richardson was one of the most dedicated teachers I ever had. Her lessons were very immersing and I honestly cannot recall a single lesson from which I didn’t gain new knowledge. It was because of Sra. Richardson that I decided to take four years of Spanish and the Spanish Language and Culture AP Exam. Had I not been in her class, I would probably not have discovered my passion for language learning, which I will follow for the rest of my life. All I can do is thank Sra. Richardson for helping me discover this passion.

Accounting can be very boring and monotonous, but if it is taught by Mrs. Benkendorfer, one cannot help but respect this complex, foreign language. She allows me to perceive accounting in a different way—a puzzle that never ends. It is because of her passion for this subject that I get weirdly excited when the debit column equals the credit column. But more than that, Mrs. Benkendorfer seeks to understand me on a more personal level. She asks about my family, my friends, my future plans, everything. She truly defies the definition of an average teacher, for she does not teach strictly by the book. By incorporating her own stories and experiences, she enhances her lessons and sometimes even ends up “chasing rabbits” and “standing on her soapbox.” I am honored to have studied under Mrs. Benkendorfer, and I can only thank her for these past two years. In Mr. Jones’ world history class, you always had to be ready to think. We did a lot of thinking about history, but we never once were told what the “right answers” were. I know personally that many of my classmates were often upset by the fact that Mr. Jones didn’t teach us enough of the answers to help us on quizzes and tests, but I am always ready to defend Mr. Jones. He is my favorite teacher because he never taught us if something was right or wrong…he would just make us pick a side and explain why. “Why” was the point. We could learn everything there is to know, but if none of us left his class without understanding why it mattered…I think that Mr. Jones would have considered himself a failure. He couldn’t care less how we did on the test at the end of the year…he was just happy to spend time getting to know us and to teach us why history matters. Mr. Jones is the best teacher I have ever had.
