Sugar cane plantations

Otavalo is South America’s most famous indigenous market. It is comprised of a mosaic of colors, ethnic groups and crafts and offers shoppers superb bargains for fine textiles, paintings, ceramic ware, Panama hats, and an incredibly fun market experience. On Saturday, you can start early with an exciting visit to the farm animal market on the outskirts of the city, where livestock is traded among local owners and merchants. A few minutes away from Otavalo, there is Peguche, a village known for its traditional textile looms and fabrics. Almost every house has a loom. You will be able to see musical instruments, arts and crafts, and typical dances performed when visiting one of the homes. Other towns that we will be visiting are: Cotacachi, San Antonio de Ibarra, and Ibarra. After the lush green scenery, you will find a semi-desert territory, which is called the Chota Valley. This beautiful valley is inhabited by the descendants of African laborers who used to work in the area’s sugar cane and fruit plantations. Music, dance and interesting ceramic masks are found in villages such as Salinas known for salt mining. Kleintours’ exclusive train uses modern technology to re-create the classic trains of the old days. This is not just a train ride; it is also a combination of service, adventure

and the charm and flavor of the past while crossing the Andean corridor. Kleintours has designed two traditional coaches using materials such as wood, bronze and natural leather for total comfort. The first coach (23 ft.), which has been totally remodeled, is a 9-passenger car. The second one (59 ft.), which was especially built for Kleintours and the Chaski Antawa route, has a 34passenger capacity. With panoramic windows, balcony and a sun roof, it guarantees you will have all the opportunities in the world to take photos on the Chaski Antawa train ride. The landscapes provide a magical environment, crossing mysterious tunnels through the mountains, astonishing bridges spanning wide canyons and gullies, and unique biodiversity. The region displays a great variety of habitats: temperate green valleys with mild temperature, open grasslands and meadows above the tree line on the slopes of high volcanoes, subtropical and dry regions ideal for sugar cane plantations, and towards the west, subtropical and tropical rain forests with their incredible wildlife.

The northern Andes region is one of the most visited and promoted zones in mainland Ecuador; nevertheless, it still has a lot of hidden wonders where tourism has not yet made any inroads. That is the case of the valley of Salinas surrounded by amazing landscapes, friendly people and cultural assets. Kleintours’ “Chaski Antawa” project is our way to help the Valley of Salinas and its surroundings to become a visited destination and to help improve its people’s lifestyle. We have made a huge investment and many efforts to refurbish the train, but it does not end there. We implemented a restaurant in the village and equipment for it has been donated and high-quality training has been provided to meet tourist expectations. Kleintours experts have trained the people of Salinas in cooking, services, cleaning, nutrition, dish decoration, and team work. You will surely enjoy this experience and feel the satisfaction of being part of this social project.

Kleintours has also developed other community projects: setting up a traditional workshop for arts and crafts such as jewelry, purses, and reed handcrafts. The inhabitants are well-known for their agricultural activities but their wish for progress and their commitment with this tourist project have helped them get involved with enthusiasm in other groups like: recycling paper and agro industry. Passengers will also have the opportunity to visit the Museum of Salt which has just been implemented to show the process in obtaining salt, the way of living of Salinas’ ancestors. The community has also worked together in making on Salinas a nicer town by painting their houses and repairing the benches of the park. Children have also been involved and there are workshops where they can express themselves and enjoy their free time by watching movies or learning about computers.

The central sierra of Ecuador is known as “The Avenue of the Volcanoes” (325 km) because of its snow peaks and impressive volcanoes. The landscape is filled with vibrant colors taken from nature’s beauty with corn fields, grass and native plants adding to this colorful pallet. People wear bright ponchos and typical hats; they continue with their ancient harvesting traditions and live with their animals. In Ecuador it is easy to have close encounters with indigenous communities that still keep their own languages, traditions, and beliefs.

Cuenca is the third largest city of Ecuador and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a city of great beauty because of its cobblestone streets with a rich colonial downtown full of churches, convents and museums. Its handicrafts stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and antique stores make the city very attractive. Four rivers run through Cuenca: Tomebamba, Yanuncay, Tarqui, and Machángara. Close to Cuenca there are the communities of Chordeleg and Gualaceo, famous for their silver objects and hand-made Panama hats. Only two hours away from Cuenca, there’s Ingapirca, the most impressive Inca ruins in Ecuador This magnificent construction combines Incan with Cañari architecture; the Cajas National Park, which is full of scenic hiking trails and blue lagoons, is an hour away.

THE AMAZON JUNGLE The Ecuadorian jungle is easy to reach and accounts for 45% of the country’s territory. It is an ecological treasure of impressive greenness and large rivers. The Amazon jungle is an abundant Eden of vegetation and diverse fauna. Many different birds, insects, dolphins, tapirs, capybaras, and other animals can be found here in their natural habitat. Within and around the huge protected areas of the Amazon rainforest, several tribes inhabit Ecuador's Amazon basin, including the Shuar, Ashuar, Secoyas, Cofán, Huaorani, and Quichua. The sun rays barely filter through the leaves of the trees, but the choir of hundreds of birds and the calls and cries of other animals are the best company for those who wish to enjoy the expeditions along Ecuadorian jungle paths. Broad rivers are the stage for amazing journeys to observe the richness of this region. This area also offers opportunities to experience and enjoy traditional dances, shamans, delicious cuisine, multi-sports, adventure, history and culture. Upscale lodges were built to blend in with the natural environment. Nature guides take visitors on all sorts of excursions: walks through the forest to learn about the medicinal properties of local plants (it is estimated that at least 7,000 medical components and ingredients are derived from plants of the Amazon region), early-morning bird-watching expeditions to see parrots, macaws, and other tropical species; visits to traditional villages; and so on.
