KLINGSHARE:#2 GRADLAB DESIGN THINKING - MARCH 2020 MEANINGFUL ASSESSMENT FOR IB COURSES KlingShare:#2 shares ideas generated by graduate students in the Klingenstein Center's Private School Leadership Program to answer the question, "How might we create meaningful capstone experiences for students in International Baccalaureate classes now that IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) has cancelled the exams due to COVID-19?" QUESTIONS: WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD IB SCHOOLS ASK THEMSELVES?

What guidance is the IBO giving schools? How does this impact the students' ability to get their IB Diploma? (See https://www.ibo.org/news/news-about-the-ib/covid-19-coronavirus-updates/) What is the impact on college admissions? Are there students with conditional admissions offers that depend on IB outcomes? What about the culminating exams are meaningful to the students? How do we balance disappointment? Is there a way to celebrate the work that has already happened? How can you leverage things that students are already doing at home rather than adding extra work? How can we add value to this situation? How might we give students choice? Could DP1 and DP2 students work together? Who in the school community could we rally to contribute to this process? How will we transparently measure success in this venture? Is there a way to create mentorship opportunities? Could we create a purposeful service project that helps others during this time? How might we create an authentic learning experience within the limitations of CDC safety recommendations and state/local stay-home orders?

IDEA: DESIGN CHALLENGE "GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP IN THE TIME OF PANDEMIC"

IBO creates a design challenge open to all IB schools to answer the question, “How might we be global citizens in the time of pandemic?” IB teachers and students then create a product or service project that answers this call and demonstrates learning through the lens of their class's subject (e.g. Science classes creating breathing masks). Classes create these proposals, along with rubrics to measure success, and pitch them to IBO.
