Introduction

Inspired by a family of artists, Kevyn first started taking Art as a core subject in high school, then pursuing design later on in Temasek Polytechnic’s Environment Design. Kevyn aspired to be a barista but soon realised that dream will never materialise, so instead he pursued architecture as it is an ever changing scope of work filled with multiple challenges, exactly what Kevyn seeks in a career. “Designing for the Comfortability of People.” An aspiring architecture student with a dream to be an architect that designs without disrupting the environment of the area. Whilst studying in Temasek Polytechnic, Kevyn learnt how to design both for the urbanizing environment and for the lifestyle of the people. It is definitely tough to tackle both urban design and social issues at the same time, but with such tough challenges, comes a more fruitful outcome. With projects of different scales and different social issues to tackle, Kevyn have faced several challenges but come ahead of them in the end with this design philosophy, “Designing for the comfortability of people.” This is to have a design that the target audience can be comfortable in, whilst not disrupting the natural flow of activity and circulation of the area.

THE KOI PROJECT Garden Link Bridge - Chinatown

Design with a Social Conscience

The Koi Project is on an overhead link bridge at Chinatown. The main direction of this project was to better facilitate the circulation and environment for the users. Target audience of the area are mostly elderly people who use the space for meditation, tai-chi, meet-ups or just simply passing by. To better increase the ambience of the environment, lush greenery and a koi pond is added to both better shade and to lower the temperature of the already exposed area. The main idea is to create a zen garden or a plcae of retreat for the elderly, away from the noise of the roads or crowds of the shopping malls around.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT Tebing Lane - Punggol

To live between Architecture and Street

Located right in front of the Sungei Serangoon Reservoir, The Ripple Effect serves as a connector between the park connector and the upcoming flats. Design created by an inspiration of two water ripples coming together to form a central area where it meets due to a three-way directional human circulation of the area. By using the water ripple effect, a play of slopes and different height levels are used to create different experiences at different view points. Activity nodes targets families with children, cyclists using the park connector and residents from the surrounding flats.

THE WATERLOO PROJECT Stadium Road - Kallang

Seperation/Connection

By integrating water and land side by side, The Waterloo Project is an improved water sports centre of the future located right beside the hustle and bustle of the Sports Hub. With activities targetting families, cyclists, campers, dragonboaters and kayakers, The Waterloo Project not only serve as a training ground for water sport athletes, but a resting area for families. An extremely easily accessible area as it is both near the subway station and it has a park connector running around it, providing easy access for cyclists and joggers.

Circulation diagrams showing form derivation.

Water occupies most of the area, so by integrating water into land, it maximises space usage.

As the park connector surrounds the area, there will be no disruption in human circulation from the surroundings.

Islands are formed by choosing the major and minor water circulation for water athletes to access land.

Retail and F&B outlets are placed on the outer edges of the area for easy access to both park connector users and water sport athletes.

Exploded view showcasing the levels of activities. Retail and F&B to provide rest and refreshments for users Pavilions for campers and families to rest. A seamless circulation from the stadium and the park connector.

Walkways with steps leading down to the water canal for kayakers and dragonboaters to access the land.

Bridges linking each island while overlooking canals at the same time.

F&B with al fresco dining for enhanced dining experience as they can overlook the islands, canals and Kallang Basin.

On some islands, access points into the canals are blocks to create views for users to take photography. The park connector is relocated whereas it surrounds The Waterloo Project, not disrupting any human circulation at all.

Tentage area for campers to pitch their tents overnight for stargazing. Small fields on the islands for families and children to play and rest under the shade of trees.

Slope view. A slope is formed on the island nearest to the retail and f&b area for a very easily accessible ramp up for kayakers and dragonboaters to take a break. The water sport athletes can park their canoes or kayaks on the slope and proceed to the f&b area to rest or just rest in the pavilions on the island itself.

Canal view Steps are integrated around the main canal water circulation for passer-bys to sit on and relax with a stunning view. Different levels of steps are created with steep steps at the begginning of the park connector entrance and wider steps at the exit towards the park connector. Different steps suggests different amount of people sitting on the steps as bigger groups can sit together on the wider steps. Trees that provide partial shade are lined behind the steps and in front of the retail and f&b shops to provide enough shade in the day.

THE FARMYARD PROJECT North Bridge Road - Lavender

Fostering Neighboring Relationships through Urban Design

A project with the vision to create a flavorful environment where the surroundings influence the residents to participate in the programmes and be more bonded as a community, therefore creating a fluent transition space. The FarmYard Project is another project that focuses on neighborliness and the community through urban farming. The project aims to be a design that is self-sustaining allows the resident around the area to sustain the urban farming area in the long run as compared to a design which only lasts a year or two.

Programme Guide

Programmes accustomed to foster neighborliness through community spaces and communal farming will be introduced to the residents as a “Kampong Initiative. Through communal farming, all residents of all ages can participate in this initiative as the communal garden will be seperated into different zones accustomed for different age groups. There will be the handicapped garden for wheelchair bound people, childrens’ garden where the wooden decks of the farm will be infused with play elements such as slides and ladders. There is also the herb garden, a serene area for relaxation or meditation for residents looking for a hideout. Elevaation

Areas where planters with seats are placed for residents to rest after seeing to their crops.

Different types of farming will be introduced for different types of crops to be farmed.

Handicapped garden accustomed for wheelchair bound people. The planters are designed where a normal wheelchair can easily fit the planters as if the planter is a table, allowing easy harvesting of crops for residents.

A herb garden for residents to rest and meditate in the aroma of herbs and the quiet and cool environment.

A multi-purpose hall where residents can come together after harvesting their crops and rest together.

As the adults have a chance to farm, the project doesn’t want the children to miss out on all the fun. Without seperating play from work and vice versa, playground elements are infused together with the planters so the low planters can allow children to farm their crops. Planters and play elements are design much =lower than the adult planters so its safe for children at all times.

The view from the block of flats beside The FarmYard Project. With the area being a transitional space, human circulation shouldn’t be disrupted at all, so by using the different gardens to carve paths, the space becomes a functional design too. With the organic form of circulation, people who walk through the area will experience the different scents and ambience of the different types of gardens there are. A space where it accomodates to every single resident without leaving anyone out, the aim of fostering neighborliness amongst the resident can be achieved with familiar faces and smiles everyday. A community where through the “Kampong Initiative” will carry on down the generations to come without losing what our parents grew up with, an essence of the past with a modern urban design touch to it.

The overall circulation for the area was also too rigid and giving a unpleasant sight.

In the third design, the rigid circulation has been tackled by adding a smoth curved where the start of the journey can see the end. The main problem here was that the multi-purpose hall had too much of a rigid form and stands out from the overal organic form.

THE RIVERHEIGHTS Jiak Kim Street - River Valley

Fusing Structure, Experience and the Scenery into a single form

With the project area surrounded by a concrete jungle, it was hard to create design which allows the area to stand out and attract residents or passer-bys. But by utilising the Singapore River and the people from Robertson Quay and Great World City, a mixed commercial and residential building is formed. Sculpting the the building by using shadows formed at different points in the day, therefore creating different kinds of experience and shades and at the same time integrating landscape into hardscape to create the perfect balance.

A mock physical model to showcase the alternating balconies on each level then forecasting different shadows on the ground level. With the whole area encased with concrete, softscape becomes a very much needed element, so softscapes are used to soften the edges around the buildings.
