t would be very hard to complain about the summer this year, although true to the time-honoured British obsession with the weather we’ve heard plenty of people wishing things could have been just a little bit cooler over the last few weeks. At least we’ve managed to spend more time than usual in the garden – although few of us will have got closer to nature than photographer Ian Ward, and just a few of his marvellous pictures of bugs and beetles (that’s his image of a Duke of Burgundy above) start on page 22. Hunstanton’s always been a favourite summer destination – indeed, that’s the reason it was developed in the first place! – and we’re visiting the town this month (page 76). Once you’ve read about the joys of cockles and rock and seafood recipes elsewhere in this month’s magazine, you’ll find it hard to resist a trip to the coast as well. As always, the area’s blessed with some truly gifted artists, and this month we’re talking to local writer Susan Young, local artists Kevin and Ann-Marie Ryan and the Westacre Theatre Company – who are currently transforming a popular local venue into a major cultural and arts centre. Enjoy the rest of the summer – and enjoy the magazine! KL MAGAZINE

LEFT: Westacre Theatre’s Isobel Smith and Andy Naylor look forward to an exciting new era in the theatre’s development. The second stage – creating an exciting new creative and working space – is now nearing completion (below), while the next phase will see the creation of a fabulous new theatre-in-the-round. Happily, the distinctive Methodist chapel (above) will still have a part to play in the future venue. “For the last few years, everyone’s endeavours have been hampered due to lack of space,” says Andy, “so we’re really looking forward to all the possibilities the new areas will open up to all the many people who use the venue.”

est Acre is a lovely and tranquil spot three miles north of Swaffham, home to less than 300 people. It seems a peculiar place to find a successful, popular and award-winning theatre - and even more so when you learn the theatre’s currently undergoing a series of major developments that will establish it as one of the region’s very best creative spaces. From its days performing Shakespeare outdoors in the grounds of Abbey House in West Acre to the time it moved into a redundant Methodist chapel, the Westacre Theatre Company has built a reputation for delivering a diverse range of first-class drama and a commitment to discovering and nurturing local talent. Ambitions have always loomed large at Westacre, and those ambitions are

finally taking shape. The recent changes to the foyer, bar and kitchen areas were just a taster of what to expect when the autumn performance season opens next month. Now in its final stages of completion, the latest phase of the development will give the theatre a fabulous new rehearsal and creative space. It will also provide a purpose-built home for Westacre’s popular workshops for young people, and an ideal location for new initiatives such as daytime art classes and Christmas craft fairs. Significantly, it will also enable the theatre to be open during the day, opening up a whole new world of opportunities. And that’s not even the end of the story. The next phase of development will see the creation of a spectacular 150-seat theatre-in-the-round, taking Westacre Theatre back to its central

staging roots and fulfilling the dreams of the dedicated team behind it. “It’s a marvellous time for us,” says Artistic Director Andy Naylor, “and it’s been wonderful how many people and organisations have helped and supported us. Being finally free of any space restrictions will open up all sorts of exciting new directions for us.” The work is being financed through a number of fundraising events and the generosity of public and private groups and individuals, including the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Rural Development Programme, the Paul Getty Jr. Charitable Trust, the Shears Foundation – and a generous donation by Henry Birkbeck. “I think one of the reasons we’ve been so well supported in our fundraising is that we don’t just serve a local community,” says Administrative Director Isobel Smith. “We’ve always worked hard to ensure Westacre Theate is for everyone. People come from all over Norfolk – and further afield – to see us, and we’re in an ideal location to reach the whole county.” And there’s a lot of demand for the company’s varied programme of classic and contemporary drama, song and dance, comedy, creative workshops and reading groups. As the latest phase of development nears completion this month, Westacre

Theatre will be performing Stephen Schwartz’s acclaimed musical Godspell (until August 3rd) and Joe Orton’s dark farce Loot (August 16th-31st). And the new-look theatre gets off to a glittering start with a typically-varied programme that includes visits by the Reduced Shakespeare Company in September and the multi award-winning musical comedy group Barbershopera in October. Home-grown performances include Camilla Falconbridge’s modern reinvention of The Country Wife (originally written in 1675) in October and Andy Naylor’s own production of Ronald Harwood’s Quartet in November. Oh, and if all that wasn’t enough, the BFG is coming for Christmas! “An enormous amount of work has gone into making our aspirations come to fruition in such an exciting way,” says Andy Naylor, “and with our new facilities we’ll soon be looking forward to welcoming many more people to the wonders of Westacre Theatre.”

ABOVE: Westacre’s autumn programme starts with one of the world’s best touring comedy troupes. The Reduced Shakespeare Company have been called the bad boys of abridgement, and their performance of all Shakespeare’s 37 plays in 97 minutes is as unforgettable as it is fast-paced.

GALTON BLACKISTON Galton Blackiston is a nationally-recognised chef, and the restaurant of his Morston Hall hotel (two miles from Blakeney) is Michelin starred and has 3 AA rosettes in addition to a hatful of other awards. He also reached the 2006 final of the Great British Menu, representing the Midlands and East of England. It comes as something of a surprise, then, to learn that Galton never formally trained as a chef, starting his culinary career by selling his own cakes and preserves on a market stall in Rye! KL MAGAZINE: What was the original inspiration behind Morston Hall? GALTON BLACKISTON: Simply coming back to Norfolk, the place of my birth. KL: What does your day-to-day role entail? GB: Working in the kitchen and promoting Morston Hall. KL: The Times rates Morston Hall highly in its top 100 restaurants. What’s the secret ingredient of your success? GB: Hard work, a great team in the kitchen, and motivated front of house staff. KL: What's the most rewarding part of your job? GB: Having happy guests! KL: What’s been your greatest achievement in 21 years at Morston Hall? GB: There have been too many to single one out, but I think I’m proudest of our Michelin star. KL: What have you learned from your work? GB: That you need to work hard to succeed – and that you learn something new every day. KL: What do you like best about West Norfolk? GB: That’s easy – the coast. KL: In your free time, how do you like to relax? GB: I love watching Norwich City Football Club, and I really enjoy watching my sons playing sports. KL: What’s your favourite meal? GB: A perfectly cooked roast. KL: Who’s your biggest inspiration? GB: I have a lot of people who have inspired me, but the most important are probably my wife, my father and Michel Roux senior. KL: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? GB: Don’t watch the clock, keep your knives sharp, and never sit back and rest on your laurels. KL: Tell us something about yourself that would surprise people... GB: I love a McFlurry!

A LITTLE NELSON STREET MYSTERY when George Plunkett took the photograph at the top on 12th August 1935, he was more interested in the fine Georgian architecture than the little sign in the open doorway. To the best of our knowledge, the corn merchants firm of Gregorys & Hampson closed at the end of 1904,

some 30 years before the photograph was taken. Did that sign really stay in place for a generation – or was the company still operating in the 1930s? Getting closer to the world of the insect They’re some of the smallest creatures on earth, but they’re also some of the most fascinating – and arguably they’re the most spectacular. Ian Ward gets up close to the world of the insect...

I

nsects are among the most diverse groups of animals on the planet. There are over a million described species, and over 50% of all known living organisms are insects. Since scientists currently estimate about four million species are waiting to be discovered, insects could well represent over 90% of life on Earth. It’s a sobering thought, especially as we often see them as pests and reach for the insecticide. Yes, some insects damage crops and some spread diseases – but most perform complex ecological roles, and some (silkworms and bees) are even economically beneficial All of them, however, are essential parts of the wider biosphere – without them, we certainly wouldn’t be here.

KLmagazine August 2013

BEAUTIFUL DEMOISELLE (opposite) is a damselfly you’ll find around fastflowing waters, and despite its name it’s the male that’s the more attractive. Although the insect’s larvae go through 10-12 different stages to develop, the adult animals live for only one season, having a lifetime of only 40-50 days. SCORPION FLY (right) is a strangelooking insect found in gardens and hedgerows, and it’s particularly fond of nettles and brambles. Although it sports a somewhat fearsome tail (hence the name) it doesn’t sting. During courtship, the male will bring the female suitable presents, and one of its most endearing habits is that instead of finding its own food, the Scorpion Fly will often happily raid the contents of spider nests.

23

Local Life

RED SOLDIER BEETLES are really popular with gardeners as a natural way of controlling insect pests. Despite their name and aggression toward other insects, their chitinous armour is very soft – in Germany they’re called ‘weichkäfer’ (‘soft beetle’). LADYBIRDS are technically coccinellids, the family name being derived from the Latin word for scarlet. The common name of this popular insect comes from the days when the Virgin Mary was depicted wearing a red cloak. The insect’s seven spots (the most common pattern in Europe) were said to represent her seven joys and seven sorrows. And from that came Our Lady’s Bird... HOVERFLIES can be found all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica, and there are about 6,000 species in the whole family. Despite their resemblance to dangerous insects such as wasps and bees, they are totally harmless to most other animals – it’s a purely defensive look to warn off predators.

Taking a fresh view of air conditioning

I

f you did need any convincing about the benefits of air conditioning, the last few weeks should have shown you what an enormous difference it can make – whether you’re working, shopping, or relaxing at home. But air conditioning isn’t just a season-long technology we’re only grateful for during a few summer months. “Our highly advanced units operate all year round,” explains Steve Simpson of 4 Way Refrigeration, “and they don’t just control temperatures – they also heat in winter and help maintain humidity levels and healthy air quality. Being able to have a comfortable ambient environment all year round really can make a world of difference.” 4 Way Refrigeration stocks a large range of high-quality AA-rated air conditioning units which operate almost silently from a stylish design that makes them very inconspicuous. Even better, 4 Way Refrigeration insists on using products with strong green credentials – which is good news for the environment, but also carries financial benefits. For commercial

KLmagazine August 2013

customers, the cost of installation can be written off against corporation tax, and domestic customers can save up to 70% on fuel bills thanks to the wonders of air source heating. The system installed by 4 Way Refrigeration – Daikin Altherma – uses heat pump technology to take heat from the air outside (regardless of the actual temperature outdoors) and condense it into a liquid, effectively concentrating the heat for the central heating and hot water system within the home. Even in winter there’s sufficient heat in the air to keep a home warm – and

it’s considerably more cost effective than other methods of heat generation. “We can install air source heating in any building,” says Steve Simpson, “and because there are no emissions it can even be fitted to an internal wall. It’s a brilliant idea and it works fantastically well.” Using cutting-edge technology to create a comfortable environment all year round, an environment that’s good for you and good for your pocket – it sounds almost too good to be true. But it’s all in a day’s work for the professionals at 4 Way Refrigeration.

Pets

AnimalMatters Our monthly look at the issues concerning you and your pets with Alex Dallas of the London Road Veterinary Centre... Years ago, our veterinary marketing activity consisted of a Yellow Pages advertisement and an occasional newsletter we sent to our farm clients! Nowadays, a website is a must and we’ve just launched our latest update, with lots of information about pet health, behavioural issues and even pet passports. To visit the site, simply Google ‘London Road Vets’ and click on our site. You can also follow us on Facebook at London Road Vets, and we even have a twitter account @LondonRoadvets for snippets and updates about some of the more amusing cases and happenings. It’s a great way for us to keep in touch with all our customers and their pets – we’re always happy to hear from you!

Reasons to be cheerful T owards the end of June, four kittens, about three weeks old, were brought into the practice by a concerned staff member from the Knights Hill Hotel. They’d seen the mother (a feral cat) looking after these kittens, but then noticed she hadn’t been back to feed the youngsters for three days. Fearing the worst for the mum they kindly brought the litter into the London Road surgery – even leaving a donation towards the milk and food they’d need! But what these kittens needed most was feeding and nursing throughout the day and night. Without a second thought, the receptionists at King’s Lynn rose to the challenge, taking on the task of three-hour feeds at the practice during the day and at their homes at night. Shifts were organised to bottle feed the babies every four hours for the first two weeks, slowly decreasing to every six hours. By the time the kittens were

six weeks old they were all weaned, onto solid food very successfully, and all were litter-trained, highly-socialised and great fun. It’s been a great success with a quartet of very healthy kittens ready for new homes. One of those new homes is with one of the receptionists who reared him, and another kitten has a new home with one of our nurses. This is just one of the many stories of cats needing homes – our friends at the Downham Cat Protection Adoption Centre recently received a little kitten who had been found in a skip, which they have also managed to save. It’s really heart-warming and it makes me very proud to see my staff members respond in such a magnificent way to a cry for help (in this case, four cries for help!) This instinctive empathy is something they show in their interactions with clients on a daily basis. This buzz of pride more than makes up for the three weeks of slightly sleepy receptionists!

Your pets Many thanks to M Forest of Swaffham for sending this lovely picture of Charlie the cat enjoying what cats do best – having a rest! Now you know why they call it a cat-nap. Don’t forget to keep sending me pictures of your pets to Animal Matters at KL magazine, 18 Tuesday Market Place, King’s Lynn, Norfolk PE30 1JW or you can e-mail them to editor@klmagazine.co.uk

Three of the best from ECOnomy Windows... With over 25 years experience in creating beautiful conservatory and window solutions, ECOnomy Windows offers a reliable, professional local service – and some of the most innovative products currently available. Yes, you can still have a traditional conservatory – and you can be assured they offer the best in the business – but there are many more options open to you today, and here are just three of the best:

1

LIVIN ROOMS offer the best of both worlds, combining the light and sky of a conservatory with the walls and ceiling of an extension. It’s a concept that’s truly multi-functional, creating either a wonderful space for relaxing or a busy family room. The beauty of the Livin Room is that it creates a whole new dynamic to the space, allowing you to maintain light by strategically positioning windows all round or having brick piers to give a greater sense of solidity.

The use of Ultraframe’s Classic roofing technology, the increased styling and furnishing options and the improved thermal efficiency of ECOnomy Windows’ Livin Room add a whole new dimension to the idea of extending your home.

2

SUPALITE TILED ROOF SYSTEM is the perfect solution if you feel your conservatory is almost too hot over the summer and almost too cold during the winter months. It’s a remarkable innovation that enables your conservatory to become a fully usable all-year living space with amazing insulating properties. Even better, the system has been cleverly designed to enable ECOnomy Windows to install it onto existing conservatory frames – and it can suit all roof styles from gabled and double hipped to Edwardian and Victorian. To ensure the tiled roof system complements the rest of your home’s exterior, the tiles themselves

are available in a range of colours, including Charcoal, Moss Green, Antique Red, Burnt Umber and Ebony. It’s the kind of attention to detail that ECOnomy Windows has become famous for, and why colour-matching fascias, soffits and gutters are also avilable to suit your choice of windows or conservatory. If you’re wondering about any reduction in light, it’s reassuring to learn that the SupaLite system offers the opportunity to incorporate glass roof vents to determine the amount of sunlight entering the room. And with an interior choice of plaster or tongue and groove timber effect finishes, ECOnomy Windows ensure your conservatory looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside.

3

LOGGIA AND ORANGERIES are an elegant and contemporary addition to any home, letting you relax throughout the summer – and enjoy a feeling of comfort and

Redefining the conservatory with exterior beauty and exceptional building design... warmth over the winter months. ECOnomy Windows’ marketleading roof offers a striking perimeter ceiling all the way round the interior. Add some downlighters or audio speakers and you've got a truly individual touch. Although white remains the most popular choice of finish, ECOnomy Windows offers traditional and painted woodgrain effects in a wide range of colours from Golden oak to Chartwell green (you can also specify a different colour for the inside, so your orangery looks great from every angle!) As for the glazing itself, it comes as no surprise to learn that ECOnomy Windows offers a wide range of options to suit your needs and the function of

your orangery – Low E Planitherm glass (as standard), self-cleaning glass, and solar control glass, to maintain a comfortable atmosphere in the room. A brand new option offered by ECOnomy Windows is the opportunity to have tripleglazing. It’s an exciting development that has multiple benefits, but it’s vital the work is undertaken by a professional, credible company. Three amazing new products by one professional local company. If you’re looking for a new way of extending your home, or a conservatory with a real difference, look no further than ECOnomy Windows.

SEE IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT! Available on all three products featured here, ECOnomy’s complete CAD system enables you to see your ideas come to life on screen. This free design service lets you explore the options and experiment with different styles and colours – ensuring the end result is everything you’ve dreamed of!

The gym that puts your health and fitness first FLEX Bodyworks in King’s Lynn is packed with the very latest in quality fitness equipment and runs a complete programme of dance-based classes. Even better, it’s a gym for everyone...

A

t the start of the summer, the number of people in the country joining a gym rose by a healthy 17% on the same period last year. It’s a sign of just how seriously people are taking their health and exercising today – and proof that gyms are now appealing to people of all walks of life and all levels of fitness. That’s something very close to the heart of FLEX Bodyworks in King’s Lynn. “We’re not called ‘the people’s gym’ for nothing,” says Trey Joseph, who opened the stylish training facility and fitness studio earlier this year. “We’re not just here for extreme bodybuilders

38

and experienced athletes – we’re here for everyone. It doesn’t matter how fit you are or what you want to achieve – we’re here to help and support you every step of the way. And we’ll be here to celebrate your success too.” FLEX Bodyworks is refreshingly spacious, and is equipped with the very latest cardio and muscle strength training machinery. There’s a dedicated bodybuilding and free weights area, a dedicated training area for women, a large studio for group classes, and there’s also plenty of parking right outside the door. But that’s not all. Work has just been completed on a fabulous upstairs suite, which includes

KLmagazine August 2013

a second studio, a comfortable lounge area and an inviting juice/smoothie bar. At the official opening next month (September 21st), FLEX Bodyworks will be welcoming athletes and gymnasts from USN (Ultimate Sports Nutrition) and inviting everyone to come and discover the facilities for themselves – there’ll even be a chance to sample a few classes! “Our weekly dance-based aerobic classes are really popular,” explains Trey. “We offer Zumba and Booiaka, we run 30-minute mini-classes that focus on individual parts of the body – we even have stilletto classes, which help improve movement and posture when wearing heels!“ If you’re interested in what FLEX Bodyworks can do for you and your health, simply give them a call. You’ll be fully assessed, given a friendly tour of all the facilities, and receive a full and professional induction on all the machinery. FLEX Bodyworks will even give you a 7-day pass before you

decide what suits you best – just the gym, just the fitness classes, or both. Suiting you best is what FLEX Bodyworks is all about. Trey and his experienced team take a genuinely holistic approach to health and fitness. “Everyone should have access to a venue where they can train, exercise and get sound nutritional information in a relaxed and friendly way,” he says. “Good health and good fitness levels are for everyone. Most people don’t realise that 98% of what you’ll achieve will be done outside the gym. We’re just here to help everyone incorporate better health and fitness into their lifestyles.” It’s an admirable goal, but what makes FLEX Bodyworks different is just how friendly and relaxed everyone is – and how dedicated they are. Despite being among the very best in their field, the fitness instructors aren’t in the least bit intimidating. Now you know why it’s called the people’s gym!

The extraordinary memorial of Randolph Hare Knight in the Hare Mausoleum Chapel. The epitaph (in Latin) contains a conundrum relating to his age – “I lived almost nine times eight years (if you take four away)” – and a touching reference to his physical presence. “I was small of body,” it reads, “but the neighbourhood said in body I was a pygmy, in good deeds a giant.” 40

The history, faith and wonder of Holy Trinity... The Church of the Holy Trinity at Stow Bardolph is a wonderful example of how important our village churches can be – it’s been an inextricable part of local people’s lives for almost 1,000 years

S

tow is derived from the Old English for ‘holy meeting place’ and during the reign of Henry III (1216-72) the surrounding lands of this lovely spot were given to Lord Bardolf. You see, even the name of Stow Bardolph contains some of its long and important history. And none of this is more apparent than in the wonderful church of the Holy Trinity. The church resembles a living history book, telling the story of Stow Bardolph from the Norman base of the tower to the screen commemorating the marriage of Mary Hare to Tony Hammond in 1874. Naturally, the church has lots to say about the Hare family, who were granted the manor under Henry VIII but

KLmagazine August 2013

didn’t move to the village until Stow Hall was built six years after his death. The family’s greatest contribution to Holy Trinity has to be the Hare Memorial Chapel, built in 1624. It continues to draw visitors from around the world – on the day KL magazine visited, the last three entries in the wellused visitors book came from Cornwall, Texas and Vietnam! Visit the church yourself and you’ll soon see the attraction. From the imposing and important memorials in the chapel (surely the best collection in England) to the beautiful details and carvings (such as the hare on the end of the choir stall (right)), Stow Bardolph’s Holy Trinity is a simply wonderful church. Full of peace, packed with history, it’s a genuine local treasure.

Chaplain to the Kabul Field Force during the Second Afghan War, Adams displayed outstanding (and selfless) bravery during the Battle of Killa Kazi on December 11th, 1879. He was the first Army Chaplain to receive the Victoria Cross.

Cockles f you haven’t tucked into a pot of cockles somewhere on the Norfolk coast at least once this summer, then shame on you. They’re one of our most traditional coastal delicacies, and are a great source of Vitamin B12, iodine and iron (they also contain a fair amount of protein). Even if you have some aversion to the coast (or don’t like eating out of polystyrene cartons) then you’ll find live cockles at your local fishmonger – steam them the same way you’d cook mussels – and if that’s too much trouble you can find them preserved in brine or vinegar in most supermarkets. You see, there’s no reason not to enjoy these tasty little bivalve molluscs. Mix them into a seafood pie, toss them into a salad, use them in a soup or risotto – you’ll be surprised just how good they are. Best of all, cook up some spaghetti and mix up your cockles with some garlic, chilli, olive oil and white wine. Top it with some freshly-chopped parsley and you’ve got a dish you’ll find in many restaurants in Italy (if you’d like the complete recipe, just drop us an e-mail). Oh, and if you wondered why cockles were traditionally sold in pints, it dates from the time when they could be bought outside pubs in London. In the absence of scales, vendors used a pint glass as a measure. Cockles? Same again, please!

Halibut with Honey Soused Vegetables, Avocado purée and Sorrel (serves 4) METHOD 1 For the vegetables, combine all marinade ingredients and bring to the boil. Add all vegetables and take off the heat, allowing them to cool in the liquid. 2 For the avocado, combine and purée all of the ingredients in a blender, mix until smooth, pass through a fine mesh sieve, and season with salt to taste. 3 For the halibut, pre-heat the oven to 200c. Heat a non-stick frying pan until hot, add a little rapeseed oil and place the halibut in the pan (skin side up) and turn down to a low to medium heat. Leave the halibut until golden brown underneath, then turn onto a baking tray, skin side down. Season with Maldon salt, put a small knob of butter on top, and cook in oven for 1-2 minutes. When you’re able to easily peel the skin off, the halibut is cooked perfectly. 4 To serve, bring the vegetables up to the boil. Smear avocado on the base of the plate, add the sorrel leaves, then place the warm vegetables on the plate and top with the halibut. Finish with slices of raw beetroot.

Halibut works well with this dish, but the garnishes are very versatile and work with most fish, especially Seabass and Turbot. The marinade is a great recipe and works with lots of different vegetables, and is particularly enhanced by using local honey. Ours is from Brancaster. We also use a lot of fresh sorrel – it grows really well in our herb garden and is definitely a good one to plant at home.

RestaurantReview KL magazine enjoys a delightful summer evening of great service and fabulous food thanks to the Duck Inn at Stanhoe...

T

he Duck Inn can found on the left just as you pass the impressive looking duck pond in Stanhoe on the Burnham Market road – it has a nice sized car park at the side with a large overspill one at the rear. On entering you’ll find the restaurant has been beautifully decorated in a modern style whilst retaining the low ceiling charm of days gone by. We were impressed from the outset – the Duck Inn has worked hard to achieve a sense of individuality and it’s a great success, from the colour-coordinated attire of the staff to the oil paintings and prints on the walls (some of which are availalbe to buy) and the freshly-sanded wooden tables. It’s a lovely spot in the country to dine the night away – outside there’s a lovely beer garden with lots of tables and an impressive summer house which was full of people enjoying the summer sun when we visited on a Thursday evening, wishing to dine early then go for a stroll along the beach. Deli CaféReview Worzals Farm Shop and Café, ideally located on the A47 heading towards Wisbech was recommended to us by friends. They’d raved about the quality of baking ingredients and particularly the delicious, homemade cakes. We went along to enjoy afternoon tea, and with a wide selection of sandwiches, scones and yummy cakes with unlimited teas and coffees, it certainly didn’t disappoint. Trying the carrot cake is a must! The staff were very friendly and helpful and considering the quality of the food, we thought it was great value for money. The afternoon was made more enjoyable by strolling around the whole site – which includes a farm shop with many unique and locally-produced goods along with a homeware and garden centre. All in all, it was a great afternoon. Work is currently being carried out to extend the café area to make way for a new bar and grill opening soon. If the quality is anything like the farm shop and café it will be well worth a visit!

Masters of Rock

t’s amazing how something as simple as a hardened stick of boiled sugar could mean so much to so many people. Everything about a stick of rock – from the crackly cellophane to the paper picture of how the pier looked in 1974 – evokes the English seaside every bit as much as donkey rides and saucy postcards. Rock is particularly British. Look hard enough and you can find it abroad (looking in places frequented by British holidaymakers is a good idea) but look even harder and you'll discover it’s been made in England. The classic stick of rock dates from around the turn of the century, when a day at the seaside was the closest most factory workers could get to a holiday, and they wanted something cheap and cheerful to take home with them. According to legend, the equally legendary Victorian Dynamite Dick (he came from either Morecambe or Blackpool) took the already-popular ‘fair rock’ and added a ground breaking idea of his own – lettering. Today, rock is available in all sorts of shapes and sizes – from fullsize English breakfasts to corporate giveaways and charming wedding favours. But go on holiday, and you can be sure that someone in the office will say ‘bring us back a stick of rock.’ Go on, treat yourself.

Interiors We’re seeing a shift in the way people view their interiors at the moment. For instance, internal doors have gone from trying to find the most costefficient way to fill a hole to viewing doors as a piece of furniture. This has seen a shift to fullyfinished solid timber products, which has meant a shift to higher value products. Within kitchens and bathrooms people seem prepared to use their artistic flair more – with people introducing much more colour for units, worktops and splashbacks. They’re also prepared to change both their kitchen and bathroom more often as trends change. NATHAN STANNAGE MKM King’s Lynn | 01553 817830

Cotton tub chair (£395) and Pineapple floor lamp (£195) by Oliver Bonas | 0208 974 0110 | www.oliverbonas.com

Browns were fashionable a few years ago, but recently I’ve noticed a trend towards predominantly beige – but with clever accent tones Grey is incredibly fashionable as a wall colour, and the two colours work surprisingly well together. One thing that strikes me is the amount of ‘feature’ stair carpets we’re supplying and fitting. Stripes on stairs is still pretty fashionable, and we often border the stairs to give the appearance of a central runner – or to bring more colour into the area if the carpet is plain. Grey is proving quite popular for floors too, but we’re still fitting the more traditional wood look – with a wood-effect quality floor tile, you can really make a statement, designing border work and feature strips, and offsetting the centre to give a room a completely new feel and visual size. SIMON JOHNSON Simply Interiors | Wisbech 01945 476517

This bold, carved wood full length French mirror (£395) is the perfect addition to any dressing room, hallway or bedroom. At nearly two metres tall, the distressed purple colour makes it an eye-catching piece and the gold accents add a smart edge. Team with other brights for an eclectic look or let it steal the show by placing it in a soft white room. The French Bedroom Company 08456 448022

Add a smile to your welcome with this doormat (£16.95) as your guests prepare to meet an utterly brilliant fabulously attractive couple. Multi-fuel and wood burning stoves have really increased in popularity over the last few years – in fact, increased demand was one of the main reasons we opened a dedicated showroom back in 2007. Top quality manufacturers such as Morsø and Charnwood work very hard to combine performance with looks, and today’s stoves are available in a huge range of styles to suit every home. Although the more traditional designs are still very much in favour (and they suit all ages of property), some of the newer, contemporary stoves are perfect for an ultramodern and chic look. The Mary Rose Collection got its name from the fact that most of the hardwood used to create this colourful furniture is from reclaimed fishing boat timbers. Every piece (this is the £95 upcycled dining chair) still bears natural colouring and markings – and some of the wood is over 150 years old. The natural wear and tear is a brilliant look for the kitchen. Little Tree Furniture 01424 734191

As you might imagine, the most popular trend in interior design at the moment is bright colours – to match the mood (if not the weather!) of the summer. A great idea when planning a new look for your interior is to take one object that reflects your theme for the room, and then build your ideas around it – you’ll be amazed how well that works! he humble shed is an integral part of every home, but thanks to Nick Haywood (above) of The Classic Shed Company in Burnham Market it’s no longer just a store for the garden tools. “People are fed up with boring sheds,” he says, “and as gardens become smaller, they want their sheds and summerhouses to be an asset to the garden rather than somewhere to stick the mower. And as I come from a design background, I’m able to create very individual products.” The Classic Shed Company has been making individually designed and unique summerhouses, sheds, treehouses and shepherd’s huts for more than 20 years – and every piece is handmade locally by Nick and his small team of carpenters in their own workshop. “At the moment, people are asking for relaxing colours,” he notes. “I think it’s because whatever the weather, they like to be reminded of seaside holidays.” Learn more about Nick and his work at www.theclassicshedco.co.uk.

Bryan Turner is proud to be a business partner to Galton Blackiston. Apart from their obvious and natural affinity for all things culinary, both the kitchen designer/furniture maker and the Michelin-starred chef have an unwavering determination for achieving the highest possible standards, being sticklers for details, and being individual in everything they do.

T

heir partnership developed eight years ago when Bryan designed and created Galton and Tracey’s kitchen and utility room at their private home. Chosen for creativity and craftsmanship, Galton says he can’t imagine his kitchen any other way. Seeing a natural path for workflow, and inspired by the potential to improve the way Galton could use his kitchen, Bryan created a warm, practical, yet versatile living space for Blackiston family life, entertaining and cookery demonstrations.

68

KLmagazine August 2013

Since then, Bryan Turner Kitchen Furniture has designed and handmade furniture for several rooms in Galton and Tracey’s home, and is currently designing wardrobes for their son’s bedroom. Bryan has also created bedroom and occasional furniture for several principle rooms in Morston Hall, and for all of the new Pavilion rooms in the annex. Bryan Turner Kitchen Furniture employs time-served cabinet makers, craftsmen, designers and operations staff in Norfolk, serving customers throughout the UK. The team share a passion for handcrafting bespoke furniture of excellence in both quality and design. Part of their philosophy is that proportion and details are paramount to perfection, so even the subtlest of design elements are deliberately handcrafted to the most exacting standards.

KLmagazine August 2013

69

“It’s all about the details,” says Bryan Turner, Founder and Director of Bryan Turner Kitchen Furniture. “The size of rails, the positioning of handles, the fine details of mouldings and turnings make a huge difference to the finished overall proportions that make furniture look right. We’re genuinely passionate about what we do. It’s not just a job.”

For example, this kitchen (featured left and below) was designed to draw attention to scenery outside: the brief was to make the most of the view across the garden from the room’s bay window. Shaping the island to mirror the curve of the bay, seating and a

window-facing prep area on the island all create a clear focal point - the garden view. At the same time, function and style are not compromised, with the result exceeding the customer’s expectations.

Attention to detail and quality of craftsmanship sees Bryan Turner Kitchen Furniture frequently featured in magazines such as Period Living and Beautiful Kitchens, and the company is fast becoming known for its creativity of design. Whether complementing extraordinary surroundings or providing continuity to an architect’s vision, the design team is creating sophisticated, architecturally sensitive spaces. “While function is vital to every kitchen we design, we carefully consider client needs, surroundings and lifestyles from the outset,” explains Bryan. “Similar to how an architect fulfils their vision, our job is to work with the potential space, combined with composition, materials, colour and texture elements to create balanced, beautifully proportioned furniture that really works for our customers.”

OPPOSITE: Master Glassmaker Steven ‘Beaver’ Bone works on a penguin (see picture below) in the Caithness Crystal Visitor Centre

A local tradition kept alive by a real local hero At the Caithness Crystal Visitor Centre in King’s Lynn, there’s only one thing better than watching Master Glassmaker Steven Bone at work – taking the opportunity to make something yourself

T

he tradition of working and transforming molten glass for practical and decorative purposes has been around for over 2,000 years, although it took rather a long time for the art to arrive here – June 1966, to be exact, when Ronald Stennett-Willson opened the King’s Lynn Glass Company. Three years later, a young Steven Bone started working as a ‘mould boy’, literally holding the moulds in place for the expert glassblowers and gradually learning the highly skilled process. Today, Steven ‘Beaver’ Bone is the

Master Glassmaker at the Caithness Crystal Visitor Centre in King’s Lynn, and every one of his 40 years’ experience is plainly evident as you watch him in action. He effortlessly draws globes of molten glass out of the furnace, and when it’s ‘cooled’ to around 1,100 degrees proceeds to work shapes into it with his bare hands protected only by wads of damp newspaper. “What paper do you use?” I can’t help asking. “Daily Mirror,” says Steven without a moment’s hesitation. “I’ve used other papers in the past, but the Mirror holds

water really well and seems to create less ash. Don’t ask me how!” Before you know it, with a turn of the wrist here and the snip of an improvised tool there, Steven’s created a cute little glass penguin. “They’re popular at the moment, but elephants seem to be everyone’s favourite animal,” he says, before popping it into the kiln, where it will steadily cool (or ‘anneal’) at a constant 500 degrees to prevent cracking and stress in the glass. Even then, the penguin will have to go through a threestage finishing process in the morning before it’s ready for the mantlepiece. It’s a genuinely fascinating operation, but you won’t truly appreciate Steven’s skill until you’ve tried it for yourself.

74

Steven’s daily glassmaking demonstrations are free, but for a very modest sum you can make a unique personal momento for yourself – from a whisky tumbler to a vase or a paperweight. It’s a marvellous experience, and the results (thanks to Steven’s experience and patience!) are brilliant. KL magazine actually managed to create the paperweight pictured below in about 15 minutes! Small wonder the Caithness Crystal Visitor Centre attracts visitors from all around the world – it’s free to park, it’s free to get in, it’s free to watch a local master craftsman at work, and it’s almost impossible not to want to make something yourself. A local tradition – kept alive by a real local hero.

H

unstanton’s amazing cliffs are a genuine slice of history – the fossil-rich layers of white chalk, limestone and carr being formed over a period of some 15 million years. Slightly more recently, the lighthouse was built in 1666, and ten years later was the home of the world’s first parabolic reflector. The creation of Hunstanton as we know and love it today (the east coast resort that faces west) is largely due to Henry Styleman Le Strange, who decided to develop a ‘sea bathing’ haven on the spot in 1846. Two years later the very first building was erected – the Royal Hotel, which became known as ‘Le Strange’s Folly’ and is now the Golden Lion (below left, opposite). Wherever the name came from (the honeycoloured stone or the River Hun), Hunstanton is one of Norfolk’s friendliest and most popular seaside retreats.

f you’ve ever seen the ancient village cross in Hunstanton, you’ll be interested to learn this is its original home. Old Hunstanton is a lovely, quiet and peaceful village, and it boasts one of the finest beaches in Norfolk – it’s a favourite destination for kite surfers and walkers. Old Hunstanton is also home to one of the UK’s top 100 golf courses, which is famous for its glass-like greens. While you’re enjoying the lovely seaside cottages and the crafts and antique shops, take a moment to visit the beautiful church of St Mary’s. Dating from the 14th century, it’s naturally full of references to the Le Strange family (they’d arrived from France a couple of hundred years before the church was built) and in the churchyard you’ll find two remarkable graves. Both William Green (a customs officer) and William Webb (a soldier serving with the 15th Light Dragoons) were killed in 1784 by smugglers.

he ruins of St Edmund’s Chapel date back to 1272. It’s claimed the chapel was originally built by monks to celebrate the arrival of the 14-yearold St Edmund in 855, who had travelled to England following the death of his adoptive father King Æthelweard in Germany.

Hunstanton’s magnificent town hall – it’s a Grade II listed building and was built by famous Norfolk architect George Skipper in 1898 (the following year, he designed the stunning Royal Arcade in Norwich).

Local History

50 years ago at Wymondham College

I

n the summer of 1963, students at Wymondham College were celebrating the opening of a fabulous new games hall, which included a well-equipped gymnasium, swimming pool and recreation room. They had plenty of reason to celebrate too – not only did it revolutionise the classes, which had until then been held in a far-from-ideal Nissen hut (above), it was also one of the ďŹ rst school sports halls in the whole country. The new facility was so impressive, in fact, that Norwich City Football Club used it for training during the fearsome winter of 1963. Far from discovering a collection of outdated temporary buildings in constant need of repair, the footballers found a purpose-built leisure centre at a time when such a thing was virtually unknown in Norfolk.

he very first pupils had arrived at Wymondham College in April 1951 as part of a pilot scheme to investigate whether a boarding school could be successfully established on the site. A small teaching staff and a warden (Dr JEG Mosby) took charge of 60 children aged 12-13, who nicknamed themselves ‘the guinea pigs.’ By the end of the year, the Nissen huts were home (and school!) to 300 young people and an ever-expanding staff.

A day at the Spa Finding time for a spot of indulgence and pampering, KL magazine reviews the luxurious Secret Garden Spa at Congham Hall

C

ongham Hall has recently completed a £1.5 million refurbishment including the newly opened spa they’ve aptly named the Secret Garden Spa, as it’s situated within Congham Hall’s famous herb gardens. With various spa packages on offer, I couldn’t resist a day of pampering with a friend at one of Norfolk’s finest countryside hotels. With a delicious pineapple, guavaberry and lime juice, we were greeted by Stephanie, the Spa Manager who seated us in reception to detail the running of the day. Following our introduction we were given locker room keys, dressing gowns, towels and slippers and the freedom to relax and enjoy the remarkable facilities on offer. The main spa area consists of a 12 metre swimming pool which overlooks the beautiful, scenic countryside. The outside patio area has sun loungers and a jacuzzi! Inside, the Thermal suite consists of two saunas, a steam room, foot baths and power showers. The design of the spa, polished finish and attention to detail makes relaxing easy, as you are in truly luxurious surroundings. The showers are one of the many special features, which have settings including tropical rain along with tranquil sounds of singing birds and ocean waves, you can close your eyes and absorb the aromas. A heavenly experience for all the senses. When lunchtime arrives, you have to get changed and head over to the main bar and restaurant with swimming

Farm near Brancaster (detail) Kevin Ryan 30x30cms (acrylic and collage on board) My work is concerned with the landscape, where man has in some way intruded upon it. Here in Norfolk, some of the crop fields contain areas planted with maize or sunflowers for game bird conservation. These produce interesting shapes and textures within the larger areas of wheat or barley. For the same reason I find hedgerows interesting, and I like the verticals of trees and telegraph poles. I find all these contrasting patterns in the landscape are stimulants in my painting. I like to draw as often as I can in the open, preferably in bad weather – so much more interesting and atmospheric with dark skies, blustery winds and the odd shower! I don’t paint on site these days but use the drawings in my sketchbook as a starting point back in my studio. Each work will undergo many changes from the original sketch because I’m trying to say something different in my painting, not just produce a reproduction. I work on one painting at a time, and I start by carefully building it up in successive glazes of acrylic until I reach the point where I’m satisfied the surface of the painting has become ‘tough’. Then I can start to add drawing and make marks, scratches, indentations and hatching to bring the work to life. I might add more paint and then scrape it away again to reveal interesting marks and textures underneath. Hopefully this gives the painting additional depth and adds a patina to the final surface of the work.

The bright & colourful world of the Ryans...

A

nn-Marie and Kevin Ryan relocated from Surrey to Norfolk 15 years ago to become full-time artists and established their studios in a tiny carrstone village close to the north Norfolk coast. They have a long connection with the area going back over 40 years, and have works in many corporate and private collections around the country. Ann-Marie Ryan trained at Wimbledon School of Art, which has a very strong painting tradition. Students had access to many fine tutors who were all practising artists including Prunella Clough and Michael Porter, and regular visits from artists such as John Hoyland and Eileen Cooper. AnnMarie completed her art education at Wimbledon with an M.A. in Printmaking. Kevin Ryan took a rather different

KLmagazine August 2013

route into the art world. Having worked for some 30 years as a commodity trader, he then decided to paint full time. Kevin is to a large extent selftaught, but he did study over several years with the painter John Blockley, who became a great friend and mentor. He has also worked with artists Moira Huntly and Peter Joyce. The Ryans’ work is perfectly described by Peter Low of the Burnham Grapevine Gallery. “Their perception of the underlying earthforms and their distinctive palettes,” he says, “imbue the Norfolk scene with a warmth that strikes a chord with many who share their feelings about the landscapes that surround them.” On the following pages, Kevin and Ann-Marie talk about the inspiration behind their paintings and the

techniques used to create them. GALLERIES Ann-Marie and Kevin Ryan’s work can be seen at the Burnham Grapevine Gallery in Burnham Market (where they’ve had several joint/solo shows), Doric Arts in Holt and at The King’s Lynn Art Centre – where one of Kevin’s recent paintings was selected by Mark Hill for the King’s Lynn 2013 Calendar. The couple also exhibit with Artlands in Histon, Cambridge and in several other galleries around the country ranging from The Finsbay on the Isle of Harris, Scotland to the Stour Gallery in Shipston-on-Stour in the Cotswolds. August Heath Ann-Marie Ryan 28x30cms (acrylic on paper)

My work is mainly concerned with landscape. I like to walk and cycle, absorbing the colours, textures and atmosphere around me. The Norfolk landscape and coastline has a subtle beauty, but with the same edginess which you sense in certain places such as the Yorkshire Dales or Pembrokeshire. I try to convey something of these sensations in my painting. Printmaking techniques have influenced my approach to painting, particularly the way colour is built up and modified through successive glazes. This richness of colour, combined with variations in the texture and mark making by the use of large and small brushes and watercolour pencils, charcoal and pastels produces complex yet subtle paint surfaces. Recently I took part in an exhibition at The King’s Lynn Arts Centre where artists were asked to paint the heritage buildings of King’s Lynn. This inspired me to create a new series of works whereby the paintings were constructed from board, canvas and paper into shapes derived from the architecture. Some of these were included in our recent jointsolo exhibition, ‘Special Places’ at the Burnham Grapevine Gallery where they were enthusiastically received.

Picture of the Month

A feast in flight KL magazine photographer Ian Ward took this incredible picture of a puffin on Inner Farne, Northumberland in July. “The Puffins fly very fast and it’s a real challenge to get them in flight,” says Ian. “They catch sand eels for their young who are hiding underground in their burrow. The puffins fly straight in and straight down the burrow because the gulls are waiting to attack them so they’ll drop their catch! Just two seconds after this picture was taken, the puffin was underground delivering its catch to its hungry chicks.”

The tale of Susan Young and the Persistent Idea Many years ago, South Wootton’s Susan Young had the idea for a book opening. Today, that very same opening is the start of what will soon become a trilogy of enchanting magical adventures...

O

ver the years, the opening of some books become classics in their own right – the first sentences of 1984, A Tale of Two Cities, Pride and Predjudice, and Moby Dick instantly spring to mind. The opening of Susan Young’s debut book Tess and the Family Secret (2011) is slightly different – it existed many years before the book itself and long before Susan considered becoming a published author. “I’d been interested in all things magical since I was very small,” says the writer from South Wootton. “In fact, you could say it’s in my blood! I’ve always been fascinated by the juxtaposition of the world of magic with ordinary, everyday life, and I had this opening paragraph of a story in my

KLmagazine August 2013

head that just refused to go away.” It was still there when a sports injury ended Susan’s career in politics and left her unable to train. “That opening paragraph had never changed over the years,” she says, “so I decided to write the beginning of the story. It all seemed so easy and natural. Despite what I wanted, and regardless of my own ideas, the book genuinely took on a life of its own and wrote itself.” Although Susan writes for a 9-12 audience, feedback from all ages (and from as far afield as New Zealand) was so positive that Tess and the Baby Dragon was published earlier this year,

and Susan is currently writing her third book. “I had no intention of writing a series of books,” she says, “but the characters developed a life of their own and demanded that I take them in new directions.” Unusually in this day and age, Susan’s books are written in longhand. “Writing from mind to pen to page gives the work more heart and soul,” she says. “It’s more personal, and that shows on the page. Besides, I hate computers!” Both Susan’s books can be ordered from all good bookshops, or direct from the publishers at www.olympiapublishers.com

After painting for many years, Gerald turned professional in 2003 and soon found considerable critical acclaim. He won the Best Painting Award at the 2004 Eastern Open Arts Competition, Most Popular Picture Award at the 2005 Eastern Open, and the Most Popular Painting Award at the South Holland Open Arts Competition in 2012. Gerald’s latest oils show the changing effect of the seasons on the landscape in a collection of paintings that are both intense and compelling – most of the 50 oils feature Norfolk scenes, but there are some from different parts of the country. The atmospheric vistas are executed in Gerald’s popular, realistic style. The paintings are accessible and resonant and force us to reflect upon our place. Gerald himself is excited about his forthcoming show and has a special reason for exhibiting in King’s Lynn. “I decided to return to the King’s Lynn Arts Centre for this solo exhibition because continued public support is essential for its survival,” says Gerald. “Supporting local arts is vitally important, and anything that raises the profile of the King’s Lynn Arts Centre is good for the cultural future of the area.”

omeone recently put a great deal of effort into researching their family tree and then traced and contacted all their relatives, inviting them to a gathering at a hotel in Sussex. Among those invited was a friend of mine – it was her paternal grandmother’s family. She went with some trepidation because she knew none of these people and it could have been a terrible mistake – but it was wonderful. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting many interesting and very kind people (much like herself, I should say), making new friends and discovering a whole branch of her family she hadn’t known. Hearing about my friend’s adventure cheered me up no end at a time when I’d been getting frustrated and bored with endless forms and “guidelines” and applications that I had to deal with. I don’t mind dealing with bureaucrats who are dedicated to helping achieve the best possible outcome for my plans and hopes. Those who want to help avoid mistakes, ensure that nothing important is missed and that the consequences are evaluated, can be heroes. But bureaucrats who block progress for (seemingly) no other reason than to demonstrate their power, or because they simply can’t be bothered to deal with it, are very frustrating. It’s evident that some funders deal with grant applications by being difficult in order to test the determination and commitment of the applicants – which isn’t very encouraging to volunteers doing their best for other people. I don’t mind filling in forms that are of some use, but when they’ll just be filed away with the tick of the relevant box, I

resent the waste of time. No doubt there have been occasions when people have found me obstructive. I might think I’m trying to help them find the best way to achieve their ambition and to avoid obvious pitfalls– they might feel that I’m just being difficult! It’s important that we all take care to ensure we really understand each other in order to avoid unnecessary bad feeling. Life would be so much better if we could all see to the heart of things, really understand them, and then trust ourselves (and others) to get on with what’s best – making life good for everyone, enriching our experience and ensuring the very best for future generations. But not everything we want is wise, not everything can happen the way we want it, motives aren’t always good, and none of us are perfect. What’s needed is a little thing the Bible calls ‘discernment.’ Jesus was able to see to the heart of things, to see to the heart of people. He knew what was important and understood what was really going on in a given situation. He truly understood people’s motives and what they were really after. St Paul calls this the “gift of discernment.” He says it’s one of the important gifts that God can give us through his Holy Spirit. A gift given not for the benefit of the one who receives it, but for the good of everyone else – as indeed is the purpose of all God’s gifts. Oh, for a world in which all those who had power also had discernment! Actually there is such a world – it’s called the Kingdom of God.

If you’re wondering what all this has to do with family trees, there’s a lesson from the recent experience of my friend. A gathering of people willing to see the best in one another, who are interested and excited about new relationships, who are as interested in hearing other people’s stories as in telling their own... This is a place where everyone can exercise whatever gift of discernment they have in order to make it enjoyable for everyone. A positive atmosphere, with everyone looking for the best, each seeking the good in the heart of the others – that’s where happiness lies. It’s sometimes very hard to maintain our faith in human nature, but God has given us everything to make it possible for human nature to be good.
