The Last Round Up
2022 marks the 80th year that the Gibler’s have been in the Shorthorn cow business. We’ve been fortunate this year for a good hay crop, grass carry over, productive water wells with a year and a half of hay going into the winter. I cherish all the experiences starting youth as well adults with their first Shorthorn throughout the years and creating acquaintances across the breed. Many of the cattle have been very successful for those individuals. Faith-Family-County and Shorthorns has been a big part of my life. Unfortunately, aging can be not so graceful so to create the best scenario for the family the Shorthorn cow will be asked to provide. The Gibler Shorthorn Dispersal will create great opportunities for the new owners, but for some this will be “The Last Round Up”. One must thank their parents for creating the opportunities to build upon a foundation of genetic improvement and faith to make a plan come to reality. Introduction in Shorthorn began in the 1939 when my grandfather John Lewis purchased a roan Shorthorn bull name “Chief”. Most everyone in those days had 1-2 milk cows to feed the family and he not only bred the family herd, but Chief was led to the neighbors to service their milk cows by horse back. In 1942, my father, Paul purchased from John Macy a few registered Shorthorn heifers for a 4-H project and hence the Gibler Shorthorn herd began.
Lots 1 and 2 are descendants of one of those original cows that my father purchased in 1942. At the Junior Nationals held in Manhattan, Kansas in the 70’s another descendant I showed was the highest placing bred and owned heifer in her class. The Shorthorn cow has helped two generations buy farms, several weddings, and other additions to the farms. My cattle are bred to be a functional in which you just need to change the type of bull to make the calf you’re wanting. Our cattle have been in the background of bulls like AR SU LU Lad and the reserve grand at the second Shorthorn Plus steer show at a Junior Nationals in the 90’s for a few to come to mind. We have used a lot of different bulls throughout the decades and the cow has stayed very similar for functionality. In the month of October, Lot 4 daughter was Champion Shorthorn heifer prospect during the 36th Annual Kansas Shorthorn Futurity Show and Sale and was high selling in a seventy-five lot all breeds sale at $6,350. Lot 25 daughter and full sister to Lot 28 was another high seller lot out of the reference sire Studer’s Ember 62 E. All these cattle have been handled and cared for like this event was never going to occur, so have confidence, faith in your purchases.
2023 will begin a cascade of events and unlike the decades of the past, the Shorthorn cow will be asked to provide for the family. So, from our family to yours, takes these proven cattle genetics and create your own history and successes.
