Up Against The Wall: Posters of Social Protest is a powerful exhibition that features thirteen international graphic designers who use posters to engage important contemporary and social issues. The exhibition is on display in the Rubin Center L Gallery through August 7, 2010. POSTER CONTEST AND EXHIBITION FOR AREA YOUTH: In support of Up Against The Wall, the Rubin Center is hosting an area-wide poster competition for high school youth, who were in grades 9–12 during the 2009-2010 academic year. Posters should be on the subject of contemporary issues of concern to the artist. Guidelines and entry forms are available at the Rubin Center or by visiting our Web site rubincenter.utep.edu. A select group of posters will be chosen for display in the Art Takes Action: Young Artists Speak Out exhibition that takes place at El Paso City Hall Community Exhibits Gallery, from Tuesday, July 6 to Friday, July 30. Opening Reception for the artists is Tuesday, July 6 at noon. Awards will be given in a variety of categories. The Rubin Center is offering two workshops in support of the call to entries (see below), to provide students with the opportunity to execute their ideas for posters and to learn both screenprinting and digital media techniques. A third workshop will include high school artists in mounting the exhibition. You do not need to attend a workshop to be eligible for the competition.

All youth workshops will include the opportunity to explore the exhibits Up Against the Wall: Posters of Social Protest and Solidarity and Struggle: The Politics of Graphic Design in Mexico During and After the Revolution at the Rubin Center, providing historic insight into printmaking and graphic design, and looking at the role of design in spreading political and social messages. In addition to seeing the works on display, students will have the opportunity to view and discuss the work of other historic and contemporary designers.

CURATORIAL PRACTICES Tuesday–Friday June 29–July 2 / 10:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Arturo Molinar

Using software applications including Photoshop and Illustrator, students will produce high quality imagery for the Art Takes Action: Young Artists Speak Out poster contest. Whether utilizing photos from a digital camera, or scanned original artwork, students will have the opportunity to refine, manipulate and illustrate their visions, culminating in high quality, full-color posters.

Led by artist and educator Art Molinar, students will explore basic curatorial concepts. Participants will design and install the Art Takes Action: Young Artists Speak Out exhibition at El Paso City Hall.

The time to learn the age-old technique of screen printing is NOW! Students will learn how to block out screens, apply ink and layer their images with color, bringing their ideas to life and printing the final product on high-quality printing paper.

All workshops meet at the Rubin Center, 3rd Floor. Check in at Registration Desk.
