Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. Invictus by William Ernest Henley

I would like to thank the competitors, their families and friends, the volunteers, the crowds and the people of Australia for the incredible welcome shown to my wife and myself during our time spent here. Having challenged Australia to “bring it on” I can proudly say Sydney has well and truly delivered. From the iconic Olympic Park to the stunning backdrops of Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 have been truly breathtaking.
INVICTUS GAMES SYDNEY 2018
Since the inaugural Games in London in 2014, the Invictus Games have become about much more than the thousands of competitors who have taken part. Our Invictus family has turned these Games into a symbol of determination, of strength, honour and friendship, or as the Aussies call it ‘mateship’ which has the power to inspire the world. This Invictus generation is defining what it means to serve. Not only have they survived injuries that in past conflicts would have been fatal but they have also chosen to fight back from the darkest of places to show their unconquerable spirit. When the families and friends of our competitors have lifted them up, overseen their recoveries, and cheered them across the finish lines we see the true meaning of courage and resilience. With the help and support of their friends and families we have seen men and women who have confronted a challenge, and overcome it. They are ordinary people doing extraordinary things who have exceeded every expectation. These men and women may be competing with different flags on their chests but they are competing together for one Invictus generation. These Games have shown us that mental health is even more important than physical fitness and that mental health is the real key to recovery. Speaking openly about anxiety, stress and depression and taking that first courageous step in asking for help allows a way forward. When you accept a challenge is real, you can have hope. When you understand your vulnerability, you can become strong. When you are brave enough to ask for help, you can be lifted up. The Invictus generation is showing us all that anything is possible. I would like to thank everyone for delivering an incredible Invictus Games Sydney 2018. GAME ON DOWN UNDER

In August 2014, Ben Rahilly, a consultant with Deloitte Australia, and Australian rugby player Stephen Moore were invited to play wheelchair rugby at the Soldier Recovery Centre in Darwin. This fortuitous meeting would lead to Deloitte’s foundational support to bring the Invictus Games to Sydney. Rahilly, a retired naval officer, said, “The use of wheelchair rugby to support recovery struck me as incredibly powerful: making soldiers active again, getting them back in a team, providing a sense of identity, and perhaps most importantly, normalising adaptive sport.” Both men took the experience of that game and considered what they could do to support the role of sport in recovery. Moore, who was recuperating from a knee injury, said, “It’s something I’m quite passionate about. I’ve been involved in sport my whole life and have seen, not just personally, but through teammates, the power of sport as part of the healing process from physical injuries and mental challenges.” Deloitte Australia, supported by Tim Hodgson, who became Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, led the development of the successful bid, bringing stakeholders together to deliver the fourth Invictus Games. In November 2016, His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex announced Sydney as the host city for the fourth Invictus Games. He said about the decision, “We had three key criteria. First, it had to be an iconic city – somewhere known the world over. Second, it needed to be a city with a proud military heritage, which would welcome competitors from all over the world with open arms. And finally, we wanted to go somewhere where they are absolutely sports mad and would really get behind our competitors.”
The word ‘Invictus’ is Latin for ‘unconquered’ and embodies the fighting spirit of our wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women: they have been tested and challenged, but they have not been overcome. They have proven that by embracing each other and the support of family and friends, they can reclaim their future. They are Invictus.

Patrick Kidd, who served in both the British and Australian Armies, was appointed CEO of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018. Kidd led the project from idea to execution, and reflected on his main objectives for the Games: “We wanted to host a great Australian Invictus Games that celebrated the competitors, but also their families and friends who play such an important role in the recovery and rehabilitation process. We wanted the incredible stories of the competitors to inspire national and international audiences, and showcase the healing power of sport.” Since the inaugural Invictus Games London 2014, the impact of the Games has grown, but the vision brought to life by The Duke of Sussex remains. Said Kidd, “The Duke of Sussex’s commitment to the cause is inspiring. He is the undoubted leader of the Invictus Games movement. Through his force of character and genuine passion for this community, he has helped bring together veterans and families from different countries. He understands how important a support network is to recovery and rehabilitation.” The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 welcomed 491 competitors from 18 nations, 1007 friends and family members, as well as countless supporters. More than 130 full-time staff and 1200 volunteers contributed to the success of the fourth Invictus Games. The fifth Invictus Games will be hosted in The Hague, Netherlands in 2020.

INDOOR ROWING Using a rowing machine to simulate the action of traditional watercraft rowing, this event requires endurance, power and speed. The rowing machine can be modified to enable all competitors to participate. JAGUAR LAND ROVER DRIVING CHALLENGE Two participants compete together in this challenge of precision, communication and speed. The courses are designed for teams to steer vehicles through precision gates that measure time and accuracy. POWERLIFTING A strength competition classed according to weight, competitors have three attempts to bench press the bar. The competitor to successfully lift the heaviest weight wins. ROAD CYCLING In Time Trial and Criterium events, bicycles, tandems, recumbents and handcycles can be used, ensuring maximum participation. In Time Trials, competitors race individually to achieve the best time. Criterium events have competitors start together in a race to the finish line. SAILING A new addition at the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, the objective of sailing is to complete a set course in the fastest time. Categories include the Elliott 7 team and Hansa Dinghy individual.
WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL A team sport, the objective is to score the most points by throwing the ball into the opponent’s hoop. With the same court and hoop height as in traditional basketball, a key difference is that competitors must throw or bounce the ball after every two pushes of the wheels on the chair. WHEELCHAIR RUGBY A team sport, the objective is to score the most goals by carrying, dribbling or passing the ball toward the opponent’s end. Contact between wheelchairs is allowed and happens often. Players gain points by touching the goal line with two wheels while in possession of the ball. GOLF OPEN PRESENTED BY ISPS HANDA* This social event features two categories: individual (male and female Invictus Games competitors) and team (competitors, family, friends and event sponsors). Golf is played over 18 holes using the Stableford scoring format. WHEELCHAIR TENNIS* The court, net, scoring and equipment are the same as in the traditional game. The only difference is the ball can bounce twice before it is returned.
* Golf and wheelchair tennis are non-medal sports.

Saifulrahman Rahmani’s face lit up when he recalled the support and encouragement his team enjoyed from all nations during sitting volleyball, including the Canadian competitors who wore the flag of Afghanistan on their backs. “They came with their families and they clapped for us,” said Rahmani. The crowds, dotted with supporters wearing team colours, chanted together in support of Team Afghanistan. Afghani competitors extended reciprocal support as Team Canada kicked off at archery. “I clapped too much,” said Rahmani, as he relived his excitement from the stands. “Most of these countries have been in Afghanistan,” he said as he looked down at a toy koala clinging to his lanyard, given to him by a competitor as a symbol of friendship. “We have a war and we have problems every day,” said Abdul Hanan Fehrdus as he sat in his wheelchair. Fehrdus trained for six months in sitting volleyball, powerlifting and athletics. Despite competing in discus for the first time, he placed sixth among 15 competitors, an impressive feat for a newcomer to the sport. Fehrdus had prepared an Afghan flag that he hoped to present as a gift to Prince Harry. As he reflected on the experience of this year’s Games, he looked around at other nations’ loved ones. “We wanted to bring our families to support us, but we weren’t able.” Team Afghanistan never lost belief in themselves. The eight-member team was selected from 300 applicants. In being chosen, they represented everyone who hoped to compete for their country. As the Games came to a close, Rahmani had a message to share: “To all the disabled people around the world: you should never feel embarrassed or less than people who are healthy – always be proud of who you are.”

This spirit echoed throughout the arena during a wheelchair rugby match, and brought Team New Zealand competitors to tears. Late in the second quarter, in recognition of the sheer determination of exhausted competitor George Nepata, a quadriplegic from his injuries, Aussie player Davin Bretherton put the ball in his lap and helped pushed him across the line for a goal. Bretherton applauded as Nepata raised his arms in celebration. They weren’t rivals, but mates. After he lost his leg, first-time competitor Luke Jones struggled mentally. “I went into a downward spiral, but seeing everyone and hearing their stories wakes you up and makes you realise you’re not so bad off. Everyone lifts each other up. That’s what I love.” Emilea Mysko recalled a dark time in her life a year ago after her foot was fused: “I didn’t see a tomorrow. I’m a single mum to a six-year-old who I thought would be better off without me.” Back then, she couldn’t imagine being at the Invictus Games. Following her medal performance in indoor rowing, teammates hugged and held their friend tight. Said Mysko, “While winning medals is a sense of achievement, the bigger picture is that I’m here.” Mysko cycles to help rehabilitate from her injuries, but it’s her bond with daughter Kelsea that gives her strength during training and competition. Mysko recalled that as she fought through fatigue and pain in cycling and rowing, “All I had to do was peek over my monitor and see my daughter’s smiling face.” Team Australia embraced every opportunity to lift others up with them. Second-time competitor Nathan Parker brought energy to every track event, showing fellow competitors how much they can achieve through sport. Paul Langley hoped he could serve as a role model for veterans to give their best. “No one deserves more than another,” said Mysko of the spirit of Team Australia. “We’re equally supportive – we leave no one out.”

Age is just a number for retired military nurse Cavell Simmonds, who at 67 was the oldest competitor of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018. “It’s the only time I’m proud of my age,” said Simmonds before she participated in the wheelchair rugby match with the Unconquered Team. “I can show others that you can keep going, so long as you stay active.” In 2017, after encouragement from a friend, Simmonds enrolled in the veterans transition program to help recover from post-traumatic stress. “I never thought I’d be accepted on the team, especially with my age. But I was, and I feel so privileged. I feel so good to be here, to be part of the crowd, to be someone.” Simmonds, along with teammates Wendy Dalcourt and Mark Vokey, competed in archery, golf, powerlifting, sitting volleyball and wheelchair rugby. While PTS had recently prevented Simmonds from playing sports, training for the Games in Sydney helped prove to herself what she can achieve. “I’m a strong little lady. When we first got here, we played golf – I’m a half-decent golfer, but I was hitting the ball like no one’s business.” Archer Aaron Boulanger carried the same determination and optimism onto the field. The 28-year-old Royal Canadian Navy member lost his eyesight to a brain tumour three years ago, but that didn’t stop him from selecting a sport that typically requires strong vision. “I figured I’d be the only blind archer here, which I am. It’s been a lot of fun learning how to do this sport.” Boulanger’s father acts as his spotter to tell him where his arrows land and how he can adjust his hands and stance: left or right, up or down. “It’s been challenging to learn how to get the arrows on target consistently, but it really paid off today.” Boulanger had some of his best performances at the Games. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, Canadian competitors embraced what most people would perceive as limitations, recognised them as opportunities and realised them through sport.

“It’s one of the biggest moments of my life,” said Kim Wilsborg, team captain and first-time competitor. Wilsborg, a veteran of the Royal Danish Army, was part of the team in the Elliott 7 sailing final. “My proudest moment was when we crossed the finish line in the Sydney Harbour.” Wilsborg recalled that when he saw the Opera House in the distance, he was so overcome with gratitude that he began to cry. Friends and family sailed alongside the four-person team to show their support. “It was special for the spectators and family and friends,” said teammate Tanja Sunekaer, also an army veteran. “We got goosebumps everywhere. I think everyone cried when they crossed the finish line.” Sunekaer participated in her first Invictus Games in 2017. This year she competed in athletics and powerlifting. “I like to lift iron [laughs]. I get a huge adrenaline kick from it and I have an awesome coach – he saw a little light in me.” Sunekaer’s aim was to get three approved lifts, and while she didn’t succeed in that goal, she earned a medal in the women’s IT7 1500-metre track event. All smiles post-race, Sunekaer walked into the stands to receive hugs from teammates and supporters. “It’s so amazing to be here … to be picked again and to make mental progress,” she said. From the sail to the stands and the sidelines, the entire team was always with Sunekaer, Wilsborg and their teammates. Team Denmark’s priority was each other: a continued connection in their healing process. Every member of the 25-person team came to the Games with a different goal. Wilsborg’s purpose had nothing to do with himself, as he explained: “The best goal is to see some of the quieter guys out there shouting and smiling ... that’s the spirit of Invictus Games.” Team Denmark inspired veterans from all nations to heal together.

“Most of what I’ve learned here is that there’s still hope in the world,” said Madis Põri, a member of Team Estonia’s sitting volleyball team, as he reminisced about their emotional match against Poland. The crowd cheering in the second half inspired the Estonian side to raise their level. After the final point, as with every match in the event, competitors from both nations were all smiles as they mingled and embraced to congratulate each other. Past Invictus Games inspired Estonia’s sitting volleyball team to compete in tournaments throughout Europe. The team came together in a match against the US: “We overcame our fear, and for us, that was going in with nothing to lose,” said Põri. Despite competing in the sport since only Invictus Games Orlando 2016, Team Estonia members remained confident in their abilities and each other. The opportunity to meet new people and unite through shared experiences led Janika Kanarik to apply for the Games and compete in indoor rowing. “Australia seemed so interesting to me,” said Kanarik as she sat on a park bench in front of the athlete’s camp. Kanarik proved that success at the Invictus Games was not determined by medals. “My goal is to give my best, enjoy what’s going on here and talk to other people.” Both Põri and Kanarik embody Team Estonia’s fearless passion for sport and the Games. When asked to define courage, Põri didn’t hesitate to answer: “Be yourself and don’t change anything. If you don’t have arms, or legs, or you’re disabled, life goes on. Nothing is impossible.”

INVICTUS GAMES SYDNEY 2018
The compassion of Team France captivated and inspired competitors and supporters of all nations at the Games in Sydney. During the criterium final, Polish competitor Jakub Tynka tore a leg muscle, but despite excruciating pain, he refused to stop. French cyclists Benjamin Bouquet and Cedric Arci saw him struggling and did not hesitate to sacrifice their own performances to help him. They rode side-by-side with Tynka – one hand on his arm and one hand on his back – and finished the race together. “They did as they would on the veteran field,” said Team Manager Colonel Bertrand Gebuhrer. “We’re on the playing field, but we respect the others.” Gebuhrer spoke about imagining the transition from recovering in a hospital room to competing at the Games. “They want to participate in every type of sport they can and not only to win.” The compassion of the French extended beyond the finish line. Down a dim hallway, cheers could be heard from the indoor rowing event. Minutes after her race, French athlete Marion Blot found US competitor Hannah Marguerite leaning against the wall, gripping her cane in agony and unable to move. Blot immediately tucked herself under Marguerite’s arm to support her and help her take small steps. Even though they embraced like lifelong friends, Blot and Marguerite had never met. “It begins like that,” said Blot. “We’re all here for the same thing: Invictus spirit. When you’re wounded, there are no nationalities.” Part of Blot’s own support came from her seven-year-old daughter, as Sasha cheered her mum in athletics, indoor rowing, indoor volleyball and powerlifting. “Without family you can’t do anything,” said Blot with tears. “They’re your rock. They’re the ones who are with you all the time. When you’re wounded, your family is also wounded.” Team France was joined by 50 family members at the Games. While French competitors performed well, it was their acts of kindness that left the biggest impact in Sydney. Towards the end of the men’s IT1 1500-metre athletics event, Stephane Rouffet grabbed the hand of fellow Frenchman Benjamin Atgie. They fought together, as true comrades, to finish the race.

“When I have to represent a tiny country at an international competition, I feel responsible to work hard and do the best I can,” said Levan Mikava as he recalled Team Georgia’s medal win in sitting volleyball. Supporters went wild as red and white Georgian flags filled the air. Their spirit was so contagious that the entire arena erupted and chanted together. That moment defined the spirit of Team Georgia: “To represent our country, our families and ourselves as individuals,” said Onise Jugeli, a first-time competitor and archer. After five months of training, he qualified through three archery heats and reached the finals. “It was emotional for me to achieve what I had set as a goal,” said Jugeli. He remained optimistic that he would improve with more training, challenging himself and others “to achieve success despite all the areas you might be experiencing problems.” Mikava had to leave his family and move to the Georgian capital for six months to train. He credits his wife for “teaching” him how to work hard: “My wife supported me, telling me I have the ability to achieve results and I should focus.” Mikava’s daughter cheered from the sidelines as she watched her father in archery, swimming and a nail-biting sitting volleyball match. “It’s very motivating to have my daughter by my side. As soon as I hear her cheering, I feel my strength double,” said Mikava. Team Georgia remained resilient, “supporting, motivating and respecting each other,” said Murtaz Osepaishvili, a member of the sitting volleyball team. While Team Georgia members posed in front of its flag after the sitting volleyball final, they raised their arms to the crowd, gave the camera a thumbs-up and hugged each other through tears. When asked what message he wanted to leave the other competitors, Osepaishvili said: “Life is short, so we have to support and help each other.”

At his first Invictus Games in Orlando, Hendriock concentrated on his performance so much that he didn’t fully enjoy the spirit of the Games. He made sure it would be different in Sydney, as he embraced the audience, the people and the music. This shift in focus prior to the Games led him to discover a natural ability in long jump, despite having only previously trained for road cycling. Moments after the medal ceremony, Hendriock was overcome. He wrapped the German flag tightly around his tall, broad frame and grinned non-stop as his teammates recorded a video message for supporters at home. “I won this medal for the whole team including friends, family and staff,” he said. “But my wish is that no one will forget that the medal isn’t the most important thing. These Games have given me more motivation and more belief.” Teammates and indoor rowers Adrian Jambé and Steffi Matz found similar self-acceptance through the experience of the Games. Matz, a second-time competitor, was the only woman to compete on the 19-person team. She uses sport to recover from post-traumatic stress and she came to Sydney feeling more relaxed than she felt at her previous Games. Jambé competed in archery at past Games, though this year took up indoor rowing as a new challenge. When asked about courage, he said it was about: “Putting yourself out there despite your disabilities, either psychological or physical, and not trying to gain others’ acceptance of who and what you are now.” Team Germany embraced their goals and each other throughout the Games. When Jambé reflected on his journey, he looked around at the cheering crowds. “The Invictus Games are a perfect way to gain acceptance for ourselves, because all of us are the same – we all have a history and we share similar goals.”

“The results aren’t the important thing – it’s enjoying the competition,” said Abdul Jabbar Adil Jaaafar, 21, the youngest competitor of the Games. A swimmer since the age of 14, he advanced to the finals of the men’s ISC 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle competitions. Before diving into the pool, he worried about how to handle the bright lights and constant noise at the aquatic centre. Now more prepared, he looks ahead to the Invictus Games The Hague 2020, saying, “I’ll be more courageous.” At athletics, Omar Mohammed Abdulrazzaq was clad in bright red shoes as he swung his arms back and forth, part of his warm-up for discus. Friends from Team Jordan cheered him on towards earning medals in discus and shotput. Siraj Muneer Abdullah’s love of archery spans 10 years to his hometown of Baghdad. He looked calm and collected at the archery finals, relaxed as he sat in his wheelchair. ”I was eager to come this year,” said the second-time competitor, before adding that his experience at Invictus Games Sydney 2018 made him feel like he was “the same person as before the injury”. “Life is interesting,” said Muneer Abdullah. “It tries to conquer you, but you have to conquer life and continue living – you have to prove to yourself that you can be the most courageous. If I hadn’t lost my legs, I would be Siraj the soldier in the army who no one knows, but because I lost both of my legs, I am able to make my mark in the world.” As Adil Jaaafar sat outside Invictus House, he reflected on what the Games has offered him: “A new life and a new experience.” Although saddened that his parents couldn’t be in Sydney, he smiled as he shielded his eyes from the sun: “I found the family I was seeking.”

INVICTUS GAMES SYDNEY 2018
While Team Italy’s athleticism was on display throughout the Games, the nation’s spirit was driven by an unwavering purpose: competitors simply wanted to be together. Every Invictus Games creates another opportunity to grow friendships within the team and amongst nations. “Each year feels like the first time because the experience you have with the Invictus Games is different from other events,” said archer Fabio Tomasulo. “It’s not just to compete to win a medal, it’s also to share your condition and your experience – that’s friendship,” he said. Despite taking up archery in 2014, Tomasulo has already made the Italian national archery team and hopes to compete in the 2020 Summer Paralympics. He participated in in his second Invictus Games with fellow teammate and best friend Monica Contrafatto. She lost a leg in an attack in Afghanistan; he lost a leg in a motorcycle accident. The power of the Games is evident in the conversations it starts. “At home in Rome people don’t ask about my leg,” said Tomasulo. “Here people ask. They want to know how I’m doing.” Contrafatto was 25 years old when she joined the Italian Army as a riflewoman. Recalling how she lost her leg, she isn’t shy to bring lightness to a dark situation. “I thought it [an IED] was a rugby ball [laughs], but it wasn’t.” Tomasulo cut in, “She always talks about her disability with a smile.” Contrafatto is one of two women on the team and won a medal in the women’s IT1 100-metre sprint. Team Italy’s commitment to understand, support and motivate one another shines through as Contrafatto and Tomasulo talk. He’s from Northern Italy, while she’s from the South. Different regions, different causes of amputation, but the same source of support through the Invictus Games. “We always stay together – it’s a good feeling,” said Contrafatto. For Team Italy, the Games is a catalyst for unity. As Sydney bade farewell to the Games, Italian teammate and swimmer Marco Iannuzzi said, “We are all different countries, but under the same flag.”

Team Jordan competitors understood the impact their contributions made to the Games, “It’s important we show the world that in Jordan women do participate.” said Abdel Rahman. She competed alongside fellow female competitor Ulfat Al-Zwiri in wheelchair racing and indoor rowing. Despite winning a medal in each event, Abdel Rahman wasn’t satisfied, saying, “I have ambition, and dreams and desires for more.” The bonds formed with other nations lifted the atmosphere of the Games for Team Jordan. “The most important thing has been our friendship with Team Georgia. The languages are similar but words have different meanings,” said Almazaydeh, laughing. While the team prepared for the men’s long jump event, Abdel Rahman’s focus wasn’t on the medals they could win, but the courage the team showed. “Courage, in the spirit of Invictus, is going into a field of play and participating irrespective of the results.” Abdel Rahman and Almazaydeh weren’t concerned with the past but looked to the future. “I didn’t do well today, but hopefully tomorrow I’ll have better luck,” said Abdel Rahman. As Team Jordan left Sydney, her words hung in the air, carrying the Games legacy with them: never give up on tomorrow.

In the final seconds of the wheelchair basketball final against Team US, Dutch captain Marc van de Kuilen took a shot from the three-point line. As it swished through the net, teammate Luuk Veltink proudly cheered from the sidelines. The two became friends after van de Kuilen lost his legs 10 years ago. It was hard to tell whether the crowd was cheering for the teams or for the close friends as they embraced. Swimmers Rick Torenstra and Rahmon Zondervan found recovery through their friendship. “We met three months after I got injured,” said Torenstra. “Six years later we met again during the training for the Invictus Games.” The friends each lost the sight in their right eye. Zondervan wears a custommade false eye with the words ‘I AM’ in fluorescent yellow. By not hiding his injury, he instilled confidence in Torenstra. “I want people to see and not be ashamed,” said Zondervan, who encourages his teammate to be open and less self-conscious of his injury. “Now we’re inseparable,” said Torenstra smiling. Zondervan came to the Games with his fiance and mother-in-law – loved ones who helped give him the courage to continue. “I learned a lot from Rick,” he said, glancing at his friend. “I learned to not give up. If he can do it, I can do it too.” In a moment that captured the spirit of the Games, Edwin Vermetten came to the aid of his wheelchair tennis doubles partner, Paul Guest from the UK. A helicopter flying overhead triggered a post-traumatic stress attack that left Guest visibly shaken and unable to serve. With the support of his partner, he recovered and they were able to finish the match. While they remarkably won a close tiebreaker in the third set to take the match, it was that moment of support that left the crowd in tears. Vermetten later received the Land Rover Above and Beyond Award for his outstanding gesture of support. As the Invictus Games in Australia ended and preparations for the Games in The Netherlands begin, Dutch teammates were united by friendship, and their belief that they are stronger together. Zondervan laughed as he recalled memories he had made with fellow competitors at the Games. “Joining the Invictus Games, you’re part of a group again. It makes you stronger. You’re not alone.”

Kelly Whittle and Gareth Pratt worked together as medics with the Royal New Zealand Army for 15 years before becoming co-captains of Team New Zealand. Pratt is new to the role, while Whittle was captain at Invictus Games Toronto 2017. He commends Whittle for encouraging him to join the first Invictus Games in London. “I wasn’t in a state mentally to allow people to come in,” said Pratt. “Now, I have to be a captain to show people – male or female, service personnel or ex-veteran, paramedics or nurses – you need to reach out early and get support. The quicker you do it, the quicker you get better.” Whittle, now in her third Invictus Games, focused on supporting her team of 24. The day before the Games started she said, “I want to be a mentor to show them how things work. A few of them are nervous about their first competition; it’s making sure they’re okay. It’s not about me, it’s about the team and pushing them out of their comfort zones.” Team spirit was strong throughout the Games regardless of competition, and the performance of the haka, a ceremonial dance in Māori culture, was a powerful example of that. The team performed the dance at the airport, on the court and at the closing ceremony – the latter was an emotional moment of support for fellow teammate George Nepata, who was presented the Jaguar Exceptional Performance Award by former Invictus Games competitors Captain Will Reynolds and Curtis McGrath oam. “The best moment from the whole Games is when we played Australia,” said Whittle. “In the last couple of minutes, George, our point player – he’s not very fast, and he knows he’s not very fast – gave his all, and Team Australia gave him the ball and pushed him across the line. I was bawling my eyes out. It was comradeship. That’s Invictus right there,” said Whittle. Nepata’s brother Damien also participated in wheelchair rugby. New Zealand finished the Games with a basketball match against the Netherlands, but it wasn’t about winning for the team. “That was probably the most epic game we’ve had. We don’t have the opportunity to train together, so to work as a team has been awesome. The guys are buzzing.”

“I came to the Games not to win, but to be part of the experience. I felt that spirit on the first day,” said Janusz Raczy after his swimming heats. Raczy was hit by a car speeding through a checkpoint and, 40 operations later, still suffers from severe pain in his shoulder and legs. “Golf is totally alien to me,” said Raczy, one of four golfers on Team Poland. Raczy was worried that his inexperience would hold back playing partner Mark Vokey of Team Canada, but the Canadian wasn’t concerned about the score or keeping the golfers behind them waiting. “He sacrificed his chance for a good score to help me out. It was then I realised that it wasn’t about the points,” said Raczy. The next day at the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, Marcin Chlopeniuk struggled to steer with only one arm while navigating a left-hand drive car for the first time. Competitors on other teams in the event saw this and gave permission for Raczy to drive both courses for Team Poland, with Chlopeniuk assisting. “It showed the spirit. It wasn’t who was going to get gold or silver, we experienced the race together.” Cyclist Jakub Tynka experienced such extreme pain in his legs during a race that he couldn’t continue – but he refused to give up. In yet another remarkable moment of the Games, two French cyclists helped him finished the race. “Team France forfeited their medals to help him across the line,” recalled Raczy, tearing up at the memory. “We were all crying that they did that for us. You don’t see that in normal sport because everyone is out to get medals. Invictus isn’t like that, it’s about the spirit of the Games.” Teammate Tomasz Rozniatowski competed in four sporting categories, despite losing an arm from an improvised explosive device 10 years ago. He will never forget the positive influence of the Games on his fellow competitors as they cheered each other and persisted to finish their races. “Team Poland is not very big, but we have heart.”

“Sport changed my life,” said Ionut-Claudiu Butoi, who became paralysed below the waist from an improvised explosive device. While Butoi focused on archery in Toronto, he tried a new sport in Sydney that presented an immense challenge: swimming. He participated in three swimming events and called the Invitcus Games down under “one of his toughest competitions”. Butoi had trained in a 25-metre pool, so he had never felt the sheer size of a 50-metre pool until his first heat in the men’s freestyle competition. Team Romania competitors and supporters cheered as he struggled against the water. “He was so focused on finishing the race that he was nearly drowning,” said Team Manager Sergiu Iosub. Tears streamed down the cheeks of Butoi’s children as they watched their father refuse to give up. The open vulnerability that Butoi displayed in the pool is an example of the courage Invictus competitors brought to every event. At indoor rowing, the team gathered around Dumitru Paraschiva as he lay on the floor, recovering after earning the team’s first medal of the Games. As Dorin Petrut shot his final arrow, he felt the joy of his teammates beside him as they celebrated a team victory in archery. Team Romania’s spirit was visible from the first event to the closing ceremony, as competitors and supporters danced in a sea of bright blue tracksuits while they waved signs that read “You are my hero”. Butoi and his children led the team into the stadium, his son on one side of his wheelchair and his daughter on the other, their small fingers locked tight between their dad’s palms. “As a dad, seeing your children happy makes you feel so proud,” said Butoi, his eyes filling up. As the Games ended, the uplifting spirit of Team Romania remained.

Archer Maiia Moskvych suffered a spinal injury and was forced to return home after three years of service in Eastern Ukraine. She found she couldn’t connect with anyone in her community. “I changed, and they didn’t change,” said the former riflewoman. “I needed to do something, and Invictus helped me with this problem.” Moskvych picked up a bow at the suggestion of past Invictus Games competitor Dmyto Sydoruk. “I thought I could just go train and understand how to shoot,” she said. “The first time was a disaster [laughs] because I needed to find my balance and relax.” At the archery event, Moskvych calmly stepped up to the line to represent Team Ukraine: she took a deep breath and concentrated on her target. Surrounded by archers from all over the world, she launched her arrow. Moskvych went on to earn two medals within team and individual competitions. Yevhen Oleksenko found rehabilitation in powerlifting and hoped to back his training with a strong performance at the Games for his country. “Invictus is important for Ukraine because it helps bring back the belief in ourselves as veterans,” said the first-time competitor. Swimmer Michelle Turner showed her determination by finding the courage just to get into the pool. This simple action for most was terrifying for Turner due to a heart condition that causes her to collapse without warning. Following her medical discharge from the Royal Air Force, “Swimming was definitely not an option,” she said. After missing her chance to swim at Invictus Games Toronto 2017 due to hospitalisation, she contemplated: “‘Do I step back and move on, or do I give it another try?’ I decided to never give up, to show my little girl that if your life doesn’t go to plan, carry on to be the best person you can be.” Sydney gave Turner a second chance, but as she lined up to race, she recalled: “I was on that block shaking. I said to myself, ‘Don’t you dare: you get in that water.’” She picked out her seven-year-old daughter, Maya, in the crowd: “I saw her banner and it said ‘Go mummy go’.” As she touched the wall to finish the race, Turner wept as she realised a dream that was a long time coming. Team UK held their breath during Turner’s race. “She was in the first heat of the first race,” said swimming coach Annie Hairsine, smiling. “We knew she had achieved her goal and that was brilliant.” Another inspiring moment took place later in the pool when, despite being tired after completing her 50-metre race, Poppy Pawsey swam back to encourage teammate Sarah Robinson as she struggled to finish her race. In her second Games, Pawsey served as a mentor to Robinson, who suffers from anxiety and was nervous about her performance. “I was so worried I would come last and be letting people down. I get so scared in the water. You don’t know how huge this is for me.” Their show of courage and support epitomized the spirit of the Invictus Games.

“Winning competitions is less important than what you’re doing when you compete,” said Rob Jones, who goes by the belief that “wounded is not broken”. Jones competed in indoor rowing and wore running blades to race in athletics. Ahead of his 1500-metre race, he anticipated his final moments on the track. “I’m nervous because I know it’s going to be a painful experience. There’s going to come a time during the race where I’ll have to decide whether to slow down or keep pushing.” The Invictus Games provides a foundation for competitors to overcome mental health struggles by trying new sports and pushing their own boundaries. As a result, Team US members embarked on many journeys of self-acceptance. For archer and cyclist Christina Truesdale, her personal focus was “to conquer the mind”. “Vulnerability is really hard for a lot of us, but it should be seen as a mark of strength, not weakness. This entire experience has been about humanity: beautiful, messy, vulnerable, resilient, ass-kicking humanity,” laughs Truesdale. Last year, after recovering from spinal cord surgeries and a stroke, she struggled just to tie her shoelaces. Now back on her bike, she is even training for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. While catching her breath after crossing the finish line of her final event, Truesdale received hugs from fellow competitors who’d cheered her on from the sidelines. In the final pulls of the rowing machine, the finishing strides of running blades and last bounces of the ball, Team US lived their journeys of personal competition out loud, revealing their strength of mind and dedication to the challenge.

“ From the very start of this journey, we’ve been aware of the need to ensure there is a fitting legacy from hosting the Invictus Games. It’s always been important that our partners and stakeholders feel responsible for ensuring that the impact of the Games continues long after it concludes.”

Sport
The newly created Veteran Sport Australia (VSA), with the support of the Returned and Services League (RSL), will oversee an integrated sports program throughout Australia that allows members and their families to connect with others through participation in sport. During the Games, The Queensland Academy of Sport also announced grants available to Queensland-based competitors who wish to participate in future Invictus Games. Health And Wellbeing
Mental health is often a hidden challenge faced by veterans, but one that sport has the power to support. Open Arms – Veterans and Families Counselling has collaborated with RU OK, Beyond Blue and Medibank to broaden the conversation about health and wellbeing. A panel discussion entitled An Unconquerable Mind was held during the Games to explore the role of addressing mental health in veteran recovery and the transition to civilian life.
Education
The Games has provided a platform to educate the wider public about the sacrifices of service and the challenges that can result for the defence community. The New South Wales Department of Education developed the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 Education Project, which is an initiative for public students in years 5 to 12 to learn about military service, veterans’ health and what it means to live with a disability. The curriculum is available online for schools across Australia and throughout the world, with modules focusing on the nature of service within the community, the importance of being resilient and the healing power of sport. More than 10,000 primary and secondary school children attended the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, with many participating in hands-on workshops. Activities included playing adaptive sports, such as wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball, as well as an engineering session to understand the science behind creating artificial limbs. Additionally, the University of New South Wales established scholarships to assist Australian Defence Force personnel as they transition towards new career paths. Employment
The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 played an integral role to connect veterans and employers. A careers fair hosted by With You With Me and an employment symposium hosted by The Department of Veteran Affairs highlighted the many transferable skills of veterans. Advice was shared on transitioning from the Defence Force to civilian life, including how identifying transferable skills such as teamwork, problem solving and a strong work ethic helps increase employment opportunities for veterans. Veteran employment initiatives have expanded as a result of the Games within corporate partners such as Jaguar Land Rover, Westpac, Sage and Aon, as well as other companies within the defence industry.

INVICTUS GAMES SYDNEY 2018
The end of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 marks the start of a new journey to support wounded, injured and ill service personnel, veterans and their families. Collaborations between government, corporations and not-for-profit organisations have led to the development of programs across sport, mental health, education and employment. In addition to encouraging people within the community to maintain active and connected lifestyles, these programs help inspire a positive shift in perceptions toward ability as opposed to disability.
