Southport Flower Show
Bring peace to any garden with some inspiration from the Far East
Be inspired to give your garden a cultural theme
Transform urban courtyards into a Moroccan haven, above, or create a tropical oasis in your garden with this hammock, below, £75, from Swallowtail Hill
T
HIS year’s Southport Flower Show will be helping Liverpool celebrate its crowning year as Capital of Culture – so why not take inspiration and inject an international flavour into your garden?
Much more than a gimmick, adding a specific theme or basing your back yard around one particular country or culture is a great way to create a stylish and elegant garden. And with hundreds of places to choose between, there’s something to suit everyone. For a minimalistic and Zen-inspired garden, the simplistic style of the Far East is always a popular theme. Sure to aid relaxation in even the busiest of town gardens, all you need is a smattering of delicate blossom trees, bonsai plants, bamboo fencing and ornamental Japanese water features to transform your garden into a haven of peace and tranquility. Likewise, the luxurious courtyards of Morocco, Turkey or Spain provide great inspiration for patios and yards. An illicit world of hidden splendour, it’s easy to adapt for your own home, and from a sparkling fountain and elegant set of outdoor furniture to rainbow-coloured mosaic
Colourful Asian hues brighten up any garden. These hot pink silk lantern cushions in Chinese silk, left, are £41 from Exotic Cushions. Right, this Moroccan candle lantern is £19.99, from The Contemporary Home walls or flooring as well as cacti, fruit trees and foliage, you could be enjoying a siesta outside in no time. Further afield, perhaps the exotic allure of Hawaii or Barbados are more your style? The ideal way to create your own little backyard oasis, a couple of well-placed hardy palm trees, together with tropical plants and a sensuous waterfall feature, are all but guaranteed to transform your garden into a lush paradise. Africa is another great source of inspiration. Offering a sumptuous
palette of rich hues including burnt oranges, rich reds and deep evergreens, a splash of paint alongside some stylish animal print deckchairs can help you recreate the atmosphere of the Serengeti in Southport. Closer to home, England itself provides much inspiration, and you’d be hard pressed to beat a traditional English garden. Filled with blooming roses, wild poppies and sweet scented lavender plants, this country-charmed style can suit all gardens and is sure to add that chocolate box
cottage appeal to any home. Don’t forget to accessorise, either. A key element to successfully capturing the spirit of any culture or country, no garden is complete without a couple of cleverly-placed accessories. From lazy hammocks in tropical gardens and timberframed gazebos for English lawns to colourful lanterns that will light up any Mediterranean courtyard, the finishing touches are essential. So, whether you want a country garden or lush oasis from the topics, you’re sure to find the perfect theme.

Southport Flower Show
Coleen is on song to open 2008 show V
ISITORS to this year’s Southport Flower Show will certainly be in the mood for dancing, as opening the 2008 show is singer Coleen Nolan.
The UK’s largest independent flower show is delighted to announce ITV’s Loose Women chat show host will officially be opening the show. Coleen has been showing off her talent from the age of two, and was only nine when she appeared with her sisters on the Cliff Richard show. The Nolans were most successful during the 1980s, releasing a string of hits. Nowadays, in addition to Loose Women, Coleen also writes a column for The Mirror and Woman magazine, plus has hosted the popular daytime programme This Morning. The four-day Flower Show will be officially opened at 10am on Thursday, August 21, when thousands of visitors will descend on the stunning Victoria Park in Southport. Coleen said: “I’m delighted to be involved in this year’s Southport Flower Show.” The event, now in its 79th year, provides everything that the amateur or professional gardener could need or want. Whether
TV presenter Gloria Hunniford got in the swing of things at last year’s show you’re looking for a packet of seeds or a complete garden makeover, the Southport Flower Show will be a memorable day out this summer. Coleen added: “I’m a keen gardener myself, so I’m looking forward to picking up some tips at the show!” In addition to marvelling at more than one million flowers in bloom, celebrity gardeners will be on hand offering hints and tips and there will be the chance to take your pick of the region’s finest food and drink. Last year’s show was a
huge success, opened by TV presenter Gloria Hunniford, who raved about the designs she saw, paid homage to the show’s music theme and praised its family focus. Gloria, who has recently appeared in Castle in The Country with John Craven for BBC2, said to the Southport Visiter at last year’s show: “I was so impressed by the variety and the inspiration people have used in and around the theme of music. I particularly liked the display with a trombone in it. “There’s so much to do that even people who don’t enjoy
gardening should come along. “Also, I think the way this show involves children is just inspirational. I remember my father teaching me about gardening and giving me an inherent love of plants and trees which I passed onto my children and their children.” She went on: “People say they could never do show designs themselves but here, at the Southport Flower Show, designers demonstrate how to use small spaces which people could manage at home.” Gloria emphasised how important she thinks nature is for everybody, but especially children. She said: “You never know when children are being inspired, but I think some definitely will be at this show.” Families are well catered for at the event, with outdoor entertainment ranging from exciting acrobatics to a birds of prey show. Celebrity botanist David Bellamy will also be hosting his Bellamy’s Budding Gardeners competition on Sunday, August 24, and don’t miss the children’s area which houses healthy eating, fun activities and learning about caring for the environment all under one roof !

Roses don’t take up much room, and always give a good display is a useful way to create a separate look and space within a garden, and will look fantastic with climbing roses flourishing on it. If you have room for garden furniture, be careful not to go overboard. Too much will clutter what is not going to be a huge space anyway. However, if you can set aside an area of the garden for functional use, for sitting, sun-bathing or eating, then this is a good idea. If you don’t wish to spend

No matter how small the external proportions of your property are, you can still tailor them to create a little horticultural haven of your very own. Whether you have a small lawn or simply a tiny back yard, there’s no reason not to sprinkle a little colour around, with greenery and colourful flowers easily attainable. A smart and stylish garden area is an immediate attraction to those who visit your home, and will be a prominent and positive feature. Apart from this, creating the garden and then enjoying it can be a totally relaxing and rewarding experience. You may have work to do, transforming the small space you have into an attractive garden, but just keep thinking about sitting back after all your hard work is finished and enjoying the sunshine in this beautiful garden you have created. Of course, before your dream garden can become a reality there is much to be done, and it is a good idea to carefully plan the best use of space in order to make your
so much time tending the garden and more time relaxing in it, then a rockery area could be worth building. It should prove hard-wearing, attractive and would look after itself all year round. If you have space on the edges of your garden, beds of flowers can be planted. If you mix up the different seasonal bloomers then you should get a good look to your garden edges throughout the year. If you feel this is a more complex planning job than you can handle, it might be best to seek some expert advice. The internet is a good source for tips and ideas, and garden centres can certainly offer guidance. Landscape gardeners can help you to plan out the potential garden area you have and devise the best use of this available space for you. You never know, with an expert on hand, you may find you have more options than you first realised. There’s hard work ahead of anyone tackling a garden makeover, whether the space is big or small, but with careful planning and some helpful advice and assistance it won’t be long until you can sit back and enjoy your own little corner of paradise.

ROM patios to potatoes, fuchsias and furniture this year’s exhibitors have a whole host on offer, whether you’re browsing or buying.
One of the key stunning features is the Grand Floral Marquee, it houses hundreds of beautiful displays by professional exhibitors from all over the country. There are around 70 exhibitors within the marquee all looking to be the best, with the chance to win prestigious trophies and cash prizes. As one of the highlights of the show be sure to plan in plenty of time to take a look around. In addition to independent exhibitors there are also society exhibitors, such as the Southport Horticultural Society, the British Fuchsia Society and the Lancashire and Cheshire Carnation Society, plus many more, who will be showcasing their specialist area of knowledge, and are sure to be able to offer you top gardening advice on how best to care for each particular species. With the beautiful array of plants on show, it’s time to see what you can create in your garden with the show garden exhibitors. These exhibitors have designed a wide selection of
Alan Francis Landscapes with the 'Memphis Mews' garden show design from 2007 gardens in a number of different styles for you to view with relaxing water features to creatively laid patio areas and ideally selected shrubs and plants to create the perfect garden. There will also be over 150 trading stalls at the show, providing a wide range of products for you to buy from bulbs, plants and gardening equipment to clothing and household furniture and products from both local retailers and those from

In addition to the vast array of British style plants and flowers, there will also be exhibits of Bonsai trees aged from 20 to 300 years old, Japanese maples, bamboo displays and cacti. There will also be a full range of culinary herbs and medicinal herbs, tomato plants, a display of vegetables and so much more.

HIS year’s Southport Flower Show 2008 gala will be a double celebration, as the winner of the Florist of the Year Competition is announced at the exclusive black-tie show preview.
This is the first time such a competition has been organised, and the winner will be invited to the gala dinner to receive their trophy on Wednesday, August 20. The theme of this year’s show is Liverpool: European Capital of Culture 2008. Entrants in the Florist of the Year competition were asked to create a table centrepiece for one of the round tables at the dinner. The colour theme is white/ivory flowers, green foliage with just a hint of blue – as blue is the corporate colour being used within the marquee. Held on the eve of Southport Flower Show, the gala gives guests a special advance preview of the floral exhibits. Around 350 tickets are snapped up each year by people wishing to be first inside the Grand Floral Marquee,
immediately after judging finishes and before the show is officially opened. The event starts with a champagne reception, when guests are the first to view the wonderful display of floral exhibits in prime condition. The reception is followed by a delicious silver service fourcourse meal, with entertainment throughout the night. Guests also receive a complimentary show programme, along with a 50% discount voucher for entry into the Southport Flower Show on any one day. Each year the event is hosted by a different charity, and Southport Flower Show organisers are delighted that the charity hosting the 2008 gala evening is the BBC Radio Merseyside Charitable Trust. The trust awards grants and donations to organisations and associations that establish a clear need within the BBC Radio Merseyside broadcasting area. This includes people living in Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens, Halton, Warrington and Chester – not
just Liverpool and Wirral. Organisations who have received the help of the trust so far include Kids Wheel Association, Disability Advice Network, Home Link, Wallasey Victim Support, Huyton Sea Cadets, The New Everyman Theatre, Wavertree CAB, Toxteth Tabernacle Church, St Helens Youth Brass Band and Friends of Speke Youth Community. Previous charities chosen to host the gala include national Children Homes, Macmillan Nurses and Queenscourt Hospice. Last year’s event was hosted by the Prince’s Trust, who invited their ambassador, antiques expert Eric Knowles, to lead the charity auction and present the raffle. Judging for the Florist of the Year competition will take place at noon on the gala day and the winner will be notified by phone by 2pm. To raise funds for the Radio Merseyside Charitable Trust, the centre piece will be auctioned at the end of the evening.

Students put their designs on show
G
IVING garden design students the chance to showcase their work, the 2008 Southport Flower Show Student Garden Design Competition was open to students of garden design from all over the country to submit entries based on this year’s theme, Liverpool: European Capital of Culture. Beating off stiff competition, 23-year-old Peter Cowell from Mawdesley in Lancashire won with his design reflecting Liverpool’s diverse architecture. Peter researched the city’s history and produced a design which reflects the old and new images of Liverpool, with water included in his design to represent the famous River Mersey. To illustrate the differences in the city’s architecture Peter used a variety of materials for
his design, including reclaimed sleepers and millstones for the old section and stained glass and timber to evoke a modern, minimalist look. As overall winner of the 2008 Southport Flower Show Student Garden Design competition, Peter won £1,000 prize money, £5,000 to create his garden at the show and a fantastic platform on which to launch his gardening career. Peter is currently studying part-time for a BA in garden design at Myerscough College near Preston after completing a foundation degree. He is also setting up his own business, Living Gardens UK Ltd. Commenting on his success in the competition, Peter said: “I’m delighted to have won such a prestigious competition and I’m thrilled to be actually making the garden from my
design. I love going to Southport Flower Show every year; it is a great place for a day out and I hope visitors will enjoy seeing my garden there.” Helen Fletcher, 43, from Leeds was commended for her design and won £500. A student in garden and art design at Leeds Metropolitan University, Helen’s garden design reflected Liverpool’s rich cultural and ethnic heritage. A previous winner and now a judge of the competition, Paul Richards, commented: “It was great to see so many colleges represented with really good designs. Peter highlighted Liverpool’s buildings in his brilliant design, and Helen evoked Liverpool’s past as a port.” ● To obtain an entry form for next year’s competition call 01704 547147 or email lisa@ southportflowershow.co.uk.

Southport Flower Show
Students shine in design competition N
O flower show would be complete without a little competition, and Southport Flower Show is no exception.
Prizes are awarded each year to a range of keen gardeners who have put some stunning creations together to wow the crowds at the show. One of the most anticipated is the David Bellamy Schools’ Competition. This seeks to find the young people with the greenest fingers by encouraging local primary school children, from school years five and six, to get interested in gardening, the environment and all things green! The competition was launched by the Flower Show’s patron, Professor David Bellamy, who acknowledges young people as the driving force of concern for the environment and conservation – the keen gardeners and environmentalists of the future. So, as part of school projects, children from around the North West region were charged with creating a garden for the show. The winning garden designs came from Amber Cookson, Acacias Community Primary School, Burnage, Manchester; Emma
One of the most anticipated competitions is the David Bellamy Schools’ Competition Wikeley, Greasby Junior School, Wirral; and Leanne Hindson, Haslingden Primary School, Rossendale, Lancashire. The three winning garden designs have been constructed by Russell Watkinson Landscapes of Southport. The winning youngsters will be awarded with £50 gift vouchers each, plus £500 to spend on improvements to their school grounds. Moving on to Bellamy's Budding Gardeners, this competition is open to uniformed groups, aged 6-14
years who are members of scouts, brownies and junior gardening clubs, giving two winning teams the chance to work alongside David Bellamy himself. Four local authorities are taking part in this year’s Bedding Display competition. The idea here is to allow councils to showcase their expertise and highlight the talents of their parks and gardening teams, along with promoting their region as a pleasant place to visit for tourists. The four councils going head-
to-head this year are Chorley Council, Preston City Council, Sefton MBC and Tameside MBC. S&G Flowers are sponsoring this competition for the second year running, and the event is expected to create a lot of excitement and enjoyment for future shows. This is a competition that organisers hope will grow in the future, and develop into a very significant part of the show. Another very prestigious competition at this year’s show is the Student Garden Competition. This competition has been running for five years now, and is an educational event, open to those studying either a horticultural or garden design course. The lucky winner gets a cool £1,000 in prize money, plus a further £5,000 to construct their garden for the show. Previous winners of the prize have seen the competition as an excellent springboard for their careers, gaining new business, media coverage and PR opportunities. This year’s winner is Peter Cowell of Myerscough College, and his gardening talents will be getting some great exposure at the Southport Flower Show, as up to 80,000 visitors are expected over the four days.

Five a day, the grow your own way
W
ITH all the pesticides and herbicides that we hear are sprayed onto crops we eventually eat, it’s little wonder more and more people are choosing to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Growing your own means you know exactly what has gone into your fruit and veg, and exactly what you are putting on your family’s plates and into their stomachs. It also provides you with a fun and rewarding pastime, one that will keep you busy, give you fresh air and help keep you healthy. Of course, you are helping to cultivate and create something you will see develop and grow, hopefully, into a fine specimen which can then be used to feed the family. Good fun, rewarding, a healthy pastime and it might save you money on your weekly shop – it doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me. So how do you get started with this grow your own lark? Well, first of all you’ll need some space for planting. If you don’t have room in your garden – and you don’t really need much – then an allotment is an ideal place for growing vegetables. Enquire at your local council to see if there are any allotments close by. You may have to go on a waiting list for

one, but it will be worth it to acquire your own little plot of land to cultivate as you wish. If these aren’t viable options, or you wish to start small and get the kids involved, then planting in pots or using grow bags is an alternative. Go organic Organic foods are grown with traditional and natural techniques that have been used successfully for centuries. Organic gardening is done without the addition of pesticides and other chemicals, and these techniques can be applied to the growing of fruit, vegetables and herbs. Not going the chemical route may seem more difficult, but it’s just a different method to get used to. You will get tastier and possibly healthier end results to use in your kitchen, it’s a more environmentally-friendly method of gardening and

you’ve got the satisfaction of knowing exactly what you’re eating and where it came from. After all, what’s the point of eating your five fruit and veg a day if that fruit and veg could be covered in chemicals? It might not be so healthy for you, after all. Getting started If you’re completely new to gardening, it might be a good idea to get some advice and guidance before you really go for it. Speak with experienced gardeners in your area for pointers and tips on getting started. Local gardener and allotment owner Chris Allen has this advice for budding gardeners: “Growing in your back garden is much easier than maintaining an allotment. “Trying to keep an allotment is not something that should be taken lightly, as it requires dedication and time. “If you have this, then the rewards are priceless. There is nothing quite like chomping on a carrot that you have nurtured yourself from seed.” He added: “For the beginner, I would recommend starting small, and concentrating on simple vegetables such as potatoes, which are easy to grow in a back yard.” So take a look at our list, above, and get growing!

ROM cascading fountains to tranquil ponds, there’s a whole ocean of water features on the market to choose from.
Shop around to find a style you like. Whether you plan to install the water feature yourself or have it done professionally, consider whether it is to be powered by the mains or from a built-in solar panel. Before you start work on any water feature, it is wise to consult a garden designer or landscape gardener, or try sketching out your planned design so you can picture the final result properly. If you fancy enhancing your patio with a stylish water feature, there’s a wide selection on the market, such as contemporary granite spheres or columns which gently pump water up and over the stylish structure, or more traditional Roman-style fountains. The soothing sound of trickling water and the sight of fish swimming around a pond is undeniably relaxing, so if you’re planning to build a pond in your garden, why not create a tranquil seating area close by? Whether you opt for a traditional bench or a floweradorned gazebo at the edge of the pond, it’s a great way to enjoy your new feature. If you’re keeping fish in your pond, make sure you fit pumps and filtration devices to ensure there is enough oxygen in the

Always top pond plant containers with gravel to stop fish from disturbing the soil and therefore discolouring the water. When it comes to choosing planting, there are three main types of water garden plants – floating plants, which are used to provide shade to stop algae growing, such as water clover or azolla; marginal plants, which have their roots in the water but rest above the water surface, such as lotus, iris or bulrush; and submerged plants, which live almost completely under the water, with flowers or leaves on the surface, such as water lilies or horn wort. Such plants can also help to oxygenate the water.

If you’re unsure as to which plants to choose for the size and style of your pond, ask a landscape gardener or garden centre staff for expert advice. Think about containers and special pH-balanced pond soil, too – don’t just be tempted to use ordinary garden soil, or to plant directly in soil spread on the bottom of the pond. Other ways to put the finishing touches to your pond include building a rockery – either around the edge of the pond, to enhance your planting, or to create a beautiful cascading waterfall effect into the pond. Whichever style of water feature you prefer, with a little planning and imagination you can transform your garden into a watery oasis.

OUTHPORT Flower Show has enjoyed the most successful year to date with the third annual Stefan Buczacki Photography Competition.
Professional and amateur photographers with an eye for outstanding natural beauty were invited to enter, and hundreds of entries from right across the UK were received from photographers looking to showcase their work at the event. Professor Stefan Buczacki, a patron of Southport Flower Show and one of the country’s leading gardening writers and broadcasters, explained: “The photographic competition has really grown in the last three years. “The show gives winners the opportunity to introduce their work to people with a genuine interest in garden design,
wildlife and horticulture generally, and provides amateur photographers with the potential to launch a photographic career.” This year’s professional prize winner is Denise Swanson from Whittle-le-Woods in Lancashire with her stunning image of a dragonfly, while Terry Cooper from County Antrim, Northern Ireland received the amateur photography prize for his beautiful photograph of a robin. On Thursday, August 22 the two winners will be presented with a cheque for £250 by Professor Stefan Buczacki. Ten runners-up will also receive £100 each, as well as being able to showcase their work at the four-day show – with entries spanning plants, flowers, trees, shrubs, ferns, mosses, fungi and wildlife, the display truly is a picture-perfect oppor-
tunity to view natural life through a lens. Stefan continued: “Gardens and nature should be celebrated, and Southport Flower Show provides the perfect backdrop for stunning photography. I am sure the thousands of visitors to the show will enjoy seeing beautiful photographs of gardens and wildlife.” So if you want to see some fantastic pieces of awardwinning photography, visit this year’s Southport Flower Show, where you can enjoy a fantastic line-up of wonderful events. Southport Flower Show
How event blossomed into success S
OUTHPORT Flower Show has a long and proud history of displaying the finest horticulture in the North.
The largest independent flower show in the country had its seeds sown in 1924. Originally staged by the local council, the show was privatised in 1986 and continues to flourish under the management of the Southport Flower Show company. The brainchild of Alderman Charles Aveling, the first show was blessed with glorious sunshine and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool exclaimed: "Happy is the flower show on which the sun shines!" It attracted more than 40,000 visitors and was hailed Southport's Great Show. As well as masses of vivid, fragrant blooms, the show contained elaborate table decorations, vegetables and fruit, while the 'horse leaping event' was a great hit. The show provided a great boost for Southport in terms of publicity, prestige and image and was to become a permanent fixture each August at Victoria Park. By the outbreak of World War II the show had blossomed into the largest flower show in the world, but was suspended during the war years. As Hitler launched his offensive and our men went to the battlefields of Europe, gardeners back home concentrated on the Dig For Victory effort. But two years after the war ended, Southport Flower Show was back in business. The shows recommenced in 1947 and have gone from strength to strength, at times enjoying royal patronage. The Queen Mother was the patroness from 1935 to 1952 and, closer to home, Lady Pilkington was also a patron for a number of years. Celebrities from showbusiness, horticultural and sporting worlds have been regular visitors to the show, too, with many well-known faces admiring its displays or performing the opening ceremony. Film legend Richard Attenborough was one of the celebrities attending the show in 1950, when he marvelled at the fabulous floral displays with his wife, Sheila Sim. But many more have trodden in his famous footsteps since.
Comedy actress Julia McKenzie launched the 62nd Show in 1991. While she admitted that she was a keen gardener, she confessed, too, that she was ‘hopeless’. “I absolutely adore flowers,” she said. “Over the last few years I have become a fanatical gardener, but I’m not very good at it.” “You learn from your mistakes,” she added, looking for some advice from the experts while she was there. One of the most frequent celebrity visitors to the show is Professor David Bellamy, famed botanist and TV presenter who is also one of the show’s patrons along with Professor Stefan Buczacki and Roddy Llewellyn. But there’s no shortlist of celebs who have brought the sunshine to the Southport extravaganza. TV mathematician Carol Vorderman added to the long list in 1995 when she attacked North West Water over a ‘scandalous’ hosepipe ban; Jean Alexander – aka Coronation Street’s Hilda Ogden – got into a romantic mood amid the fragrant blossoms in 2002 when she planted a smacker on the cheek of Norman Wisdom, and Rolf Harris clearly tied his kangaroo down outside when he waltzed into the flower show in 1994. Frank Bruno, Thora Hird and Alan Titchmarsh are just some of the other keen gardeners who have graced the show with their presence. The highest attendance was in 1961, when 131,000 people visited the show. However, in 1986 show organisers Sefton Borough Council decided they could no longer afford to stage the event. A group of local businesses and gardeners came to the rescue by forming the Southport Flower Show Company. Within five years attendances topped 100,000 and the show's future was given extra security when Sefton Council granted the company a 60-year lease on the 34-acre show site in 1994 for a token rent of one bouquet, which is presented each year to the mayor or mayoress of Sefton on the first day of the show. Since then, the company has invested millions of pounds in renovations and maintenance of Victoria Park.

Behind the scenes: Bandstand manager Dennis THOSE who work behind the scenes are vital to the success of Southport Flower Show. In 1987, Dennis Hudson of Crosby noticed a request from the newly-formed Southport Flower Show Ltd saying: “We need volunteers.” He told his wife Marie: “I’ll do one year and see how it goes.” Twenty-two years later Dennis, now 79, is bandstand manager with his own team of helpers. When he first volunteered he was still a full-time civil servant and looked on flower show week as “a lovely change from office work.” He had always loved gardening and had wonderful memories of childhood visits to Southport Flower Show. Before rising to the rank of bandstand manager, he started off doing odd jobs such as putting out chairs and helping exhibitors. In the early 90s, in what he called a labour of love, Dennis decided to paint the bandstand as he thought it was looking shabby. Besides music, the bandstand also hosts gardening experts and features question-andanswer sessions. It is one of the most popular features, with bands playing music to suit all tastes.

Time to give your garden a new look
S
UMMER is well and truly here, so it’s time to peel ourselves away from the telly and venture into the great outdoors.
So how’s your garden looking? Hopefully it’s in tip-top shape in time to enjoy the sunshine. But if yours is more like an overgrown jungle than a Garden of Eden, it's time to get out your shears and spruce it into shape. We all know the warm weather doesn’t last for long, so now is the ideal time to dig deep and create a blooming feast for the eyes. Start by giving your garden a spring clean. Weed shrub borders and set them ablaze with some colourful bedding plants such as peonies, delphiniums, campanulas and lupins. And don't neglect your lawn, which is often the unsung hero of a flourishing garden. To make it luscious
and green once more you will need to give it your undivided attention. Those without green fingers may want to seek the advice of a lawn care specialist, who will return your lawn to its former glory in no time. And if you’re more Percy Sugden than Percy Thrower, treat your garden to a makeover with some ornamental trees and decorative pots, which virtually eliminate the need to weed. For extra splashes of colour in your garden, why not consider containers or hanging baskets? But don’t forget to take a look at your fencing. It’s surprising what a difference a new lick of creosote makes, and there is now a varied colour palette from which to choose. The really gardeningshy may prefer to opt for a low maintenance approach such as a patio or some stylish
decking. Timber decking can be used as a shortcut to creating an ‘instant’ garden. It can literally extend your ‘indoor’ space to the outdoors, providing a surface for garden furniture, a barbecue, perhaps even for a spa tub. Once you’ve got your garden looking great, you can relax outside and enjoy the fruits of your labour and even indulge in a spot of al fresco dining. But for this you’re going to need some stylish yet practical garden furniture – and we're not talking about those tatty old plastic chairs you've had for the last 15 years. There's a great variety of stylish furniture for the garden in the shops, from cast iron tables decorated with mosaic tiles to trendy wooden chairs and stainless steel patio sets. In fact, some of the garden furniture now on sale rivals that of
indoors, from aesthetic leather recliners to stylish hammocks or swings. Garden heaters and wood-burning chimineas are also worth investing in, as they let you extend warm balmy days into the evenings – and there’s no more satisfying end to a summer’s day than to watch the sun go down in your own garden! Add a magical ambience with clever lighting – even if it’s only candles in jam jars or a few lanterns dotted around. For inspiration, take a trip to your local nursery or garden centre, which will have plenty of ideas and all the plants, tools and equipment you need to create a garden which will turn your neighbours green with envy. So, go on – get out there and give your garden a new lease of life – you won't regret it!
With a little attention your garden could look blooming marvellous in next to no time

Cultivate your children’s green fingers W
ITH a little bit of imagination (and quite a lot of mud), it’s easy to introduce your child to the world of gardening.
A great way to teach them about plants and wildlife – as well as spending some quality time together – there are dozens of fun and exciting ways to help kids discover the delights of the garden. Why not start by kitting them out with their very own minitools? A sure-fire way to get their attention, many stores sell childfriendly spade and fork sets as well as watering cans and plant pots, plus kids will absolutely adore helping you choose their own seeds and bulbs to plant and grow. Back in the garden, it’s time to roll up those sleeves and get your hands dirty. Creating a separate herb garden, vegetable or fruit patch just for your child is all but guaranteed to get their green fingers growing, and whether they love digging down to collect the first crop of potatoes or prefer the sensory smells of lemon balm and mint in the herb garden, the key is to keep it simple and fun. As for teaching them about
flowers or plants, try giving your children their own plant pot which they can decorate and put their name on before watching the contents grow. A great way for children to learn about the care plants need, they’ll take in pride in seeing something flourish – and also relish the chance to compete against other siblings for the title of tallest or most flowery plant!
Likewise, most kids love animals and will be thrilled to discover the long list of birds, bees, creepy crawlies and wildlife that all visit their garden. A superb way to help them learn without even realising it, there are dozens of different ‘games’ you can play to help your child discover the countryside.
From seeing how many different animals they can spot in the pond and keeping a bird watching log to helping set up a bird feeder (making sure it’s not by any cat-friendly walls), the more you do to your garden the more wildlife you’ll attract in return. You don’t have to be a country bumpkin to enjoy the garden with your kids either, and whether you have acres of gardens edging onto Assign your child their own plant acres of countryside or a pots, above, from Woolworths, and kit them out for the garden with modest back yard in the these frog wellington boots, £3, left, middle of town, from Matalan there are still vegetable patch, many veggies lots of ways to let your kids including potatoes and find their green-fingers. tomatoes can be grown in Town houses are especially compost bags, so you don’t suited to big plant pots, have to miss out. miniature greenhouses and So for free fun for the whole trellis-loving plants. Southport Flower Show
Your ‘extra room’ deserves attention Y
OUR conservatory is not just a room for the summer months, or a walkway to your garden; it deserves the same attention to detail as the rest of your home.
There are a number of ways to use your conservatory to its full potential. The main choices are usually either as a dining room or a relaxing living area. Maybe you would prefer to use the space for a little ‘me’ time, where you can relax with views of the garden? If so, a large comfy chair is an ideal option. Depending on the style you already have within your home, there’s plenty of furniture for you to choose from to ensure your conservatory is a fully functioning part of the house. Is it a sleek and modern approach you’re after, or maybe a relaxing country feel to make it snug? Have a look around your local furniture stores, as well as garden centres, to see what’s available. Obviously the size also dictates in what ways you can use your conservatory. There’s no point in trying to squeeze a six-seater dining table in if there’s no space to move. Nowadays there is a wide range to pick from – even the traditional cane seating comes in a high quality with a contemporary style. Adding a little colour to the room is the perfect way to create those personal touches, and as you can’t change the colour of the walls (because they’re glass), try adding colour with cushions, rugs and blinds. Even side tables with vases will make your conservatory feel more homely. Big patterns and bold colours are the perfect accompaniment to neutral-coloured furniture, especially during the summer months, giving a brighter feel to the room. In addition to the traditional style light cane furniture, this year sees many darker furniture sets making an appearance, which can be fine as long as you keep your conservatory in natural tones and clutter free. It’s not just the furniture that matters in your conservatory; the additional extras can make all the difference. There are plenty of blinds available nowadays, and it’s worth using a professional company that measures, designs and installs to ensure you get the correct blinds. There are plenty to choose from, and it’s not just about them looking good – in a conservatory they also prevent heat build-up and provide privacy. You can even get remote-controlled blinds that give smooth opening and closing, allowing you to decide how much light gets in and how much privacy you require. Heating and cooling devices can also be fitted in your conservatory, whether you want a slim line panel heater, an airconditioning system or something that tackles both, there’s plenty available. Additionally, you have to think about the flooring. Solid timber flooring is not always a good option due to potential heat build-up, which could lead to the timber twisting and warping, so if you want a wood style then engineered hardwood flooring gives a contemporary natural style, plus you can even use underfloor heating with it too, for those colder winter months. There is also a wide range of tiles, which are ideal for a conservatory, being easy to maintain and available in a huge choice, whether you want a natural stone style or a contemporary pattern. Before you rush to the stores, think carefully about what will best suit the space you have in your conservatory to ensure you get all those finishing touches just right.

Southport Flower Show
Your garden doesn’t take a holiday W
ITH this year’s flower show fast approaching, there will be plenty of opportunities to get those garden essentials.
It may be August and your garden is in full bloom, but there’s still a lot that you can do around the garden. Your little green haven still has plenty more colour to offer in the coming weeks, and right up until the first frost arrives, especially from late-flowering plants such as perennials, including dahlias. To make sure your delightful garden display keeps going as long as possible, pick off the dead flowers and pinch back straggly growths of summer bedding plants. Dead flowers should be collected from bedding dahlias every week. August is the time for hedges such as yew, leylandii and other evergreen hedges to be clipped to shape. Towards the end of the month is the ideal time to start feeding and weeding again, and to carry out any aeration before the onset of autumn. The Southport Flower
Show is the perfect place to pick up those bulbs you’ll be ready to plant in September. There will also be a stand providing autumn and winter hanging baskets and winter patio planters to ensure your garden looks great all year round. Once next month arrives it’s time to start getting those new roses, shrubs and other plants that you need. Autumn is the best time for planting – the soil is still warm and the rains will get them established before the winter sets in, giving a good start for the next season. In September rambler roses should be pruned, cutting away the old flowered growths, plus this is the time to patch up worn lawns or create a new lawned area. If you have a fish pond then in late September reduce their feeding as their movements become slower, plus put a net over the surface to keep the pond clear of any fallen leaves. To keep your garden looking great, just a little time each week will ensure it’s always at its best.
Summer tips
The flower show is the place to buy bulbs to ensure a great show of blooms next spring
● Now’s the time to take summer cuttings of your fuchsias, dianthus, clematis and pelargoniums. These root quickly at this time of year, forming sturdy young plants that will successfully overwinter on a windowsill ● Ensure containerised plants, especially evergreens, never go short of water during the summer while they're developing their flower buds for next spring's display. A shortage of water now can lead to a case of bud drop next year for plants ● Plant bulbs in early September, but if you’re late don’t worry, as tulip bulbs can be left until November! ● Daffodils, snowdrops, crocus and tulip bulbs provide a burst of colour early the following year ● Deadhead roses as the blooms fade, cutting off the flowers just above the uppermost leaf on the stem ● Freeze your herbs for a steady supply through the winter. There’s no need to chop them, simply crush gently when frozen to use as required
