2009-2010

Librarian’s Report In December, January and February, I continued teaching technology professional development classes, including ones on Collaborating with Google Docs, Getting Started with Google Docs and Getting the Most from your G-mail. I also offered a new course on Powerful Search Tools. I also worked with several faculty members to assist their classes with research and technology skills. I helped out Sam Hollander with his Technicool presentations to the 7th and 8th grades. The Technicool presentation focuses on internet safety and cyber-bullying and was presented to each student in 7th and 8th grade. I was also able to attend the VTASCD Conference in Stowe that featured some great speakers, including Joyce Valenza – a real library / technology rock star! I worked with Cindy Robert’s classes on using Xtranormal, a web based animation and movie making package. Her students were creating short films to show what they learned while playing the stock market game. I continued with all my normal committee activities, including the MRU Tech Committee, the District Tech Committee, the Battle of the Books Committee, and the Coordinated School Health Team. I was able to work with Lynn Miner to prepare an application for the Fit and Healthy Schools Wellness Award and we were pleased to find out in March that we were awarded the silver medal, along with a grant for $2000. Also on the health and wellness front, we were pleased to host a film crew from VEHI that was here to record some of the nifty and innovative things we’re doing in our district. I was asked by Shevonne from VEHI to co-present at the BCBS Worksite Wellness Forum in Rutland. Businesses from all over the southern part of the state were invited to participate and hear presentations from worksite wellness model institutions.

I was also glad to coordinate with Debra Baasch to create digital content for the Day in the Life Project. On February 4th, many folks at MRU took out their cameras and took pictures of what life was like here on that day. We gave out our set of student cameras, and many students and faculty used their own equipment to submit pictures. I put all the pictures together into a couple of Animoto movies that are posted on the MRU home page. Debra and I also designed a survey tool that we used with classes, groups of students and faculty members on February 4th. The survey results are posted on the web page as well. During her travel to Zimbabwe during winter break, Debra took lots of photos that I then made into more movies. It was great to see all the smiling students in Zimbabwe! This was a great opportunity for our students to learn more about what life is like for students around the world. I was also able to travel to FHUHS to get some more training in using the LNV equipment. We’ve been working out some of the kinks with our connection and I’m looking forward to scheduling some virtual field trips soon. I was happy to be able to attend an ipad demonstration courtesy of Brian Gewirtz, our K-12 Apple rep. It was great to see everything that we could do with a lab of ipads. I’m looking forward to the Battle of the Books in April, where we’ll welcome contestants from each elementary for a day full of celebrating books and reading.
