Shortly after the L. A. Riots were over, Hughs created his vision of the law enforcement officers in California.

“Symbols� the title of the piece also became the title of the album when fans were unsure what to call this self-titled album.

“Split” depicted a sense of self loathing and depression that almost led to the end of BRUTE! art in 1993.


Artist Aidan Hughs was trained early in his career as a landscape painter, but today he paints IN them rather than about them. With influences like Jack Kirby, an American comic book artist, and John Martin, a fantasy apocalyptic illustrator, it is easy to see where Hughs draws his inspirations. His upbringing also plays a large part of who he is today, growing up in a family owned pub frequented by sailors and gang members lead him to a feeling of comfort in the most seedy of places. After moving to the states in the 70’s Hughs found a new set of characters to be intrigued by, the disco scene. He would frequent the bars of the area, being a predominantly gay area, “pimps and prostitutes” were found throughout this new found source of inspiration. This lead to artwork that was dominant, possessive, violent and filled with “new found teenage angst.” Communism was on the rise and with it we got “Soviet Propaganda Posters,” Hughs became heavily influenced by this powerful and motivating style. He began to work on a large-scale project for an American band called KFMDM. Hughs still to this day creates their cover art that consists of a simple black background, the band name at the top with the album name along the bottom. The art is a complex propaganda style image, usually black, white and one other color. KMFDM helped Hughs leap into the commercial art industry; he has clients such as Guinness beer and The Bank of Scotland. He also began to dabble in video, using his art to create a music video for KMFDM. Television stations took notice and began to offer commercial “shorts” projects to him, which he took and ran with the same teenage angst that propelled him to this powerful style. His images and works were so powerful in the UK that he became known as BRUTE! He still maintains this name on all his current works and projects, and lives up to the
