Live
on EDGE
To infinity…and beyond! That’s where the new Samsung Galaxy Note Edge will take you. The latest smartphone from Samsung’s slew of inventions invites users to live on the edge. Not a far stretch from the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, its primary feature – a curved slide bar-like screen – is what makes the difference. The asymmetrical shape of the edge, which measures 2,560 x 160 pixels, allows you to easily navigate through apps and widgets with the aid of its sleek waterfall effect. Ironic, one might say about the Edge actually being a curve, but users can appreciate the visual interface this design offers. Curved is the new flat! At least so it seems in Samsung’s vision for electronics. The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Continues on next page
With the mandate to enable residents to fulfill their social, economic and educational potential through easy community access, the UWI Mona SOURCE is well on its way. The social enterprise birthed from the careful consideration of the Jamaica National Building Society Foundation (JN Foundation) was designed to serve the need for economic growth within the Greater August Town community. Its primary focus upon opening was to provide customers with the traditional services of an elementary internet café. However, after careful consideration, the SOURCE has revamped its offerings to become equivalent to a multi-purpose facility. It now boasts reading and meeting rooms, a stationery shop, courier service, small business guidance counselling and a Skype video chat service with headphones provided.
The SOURCE Model was developed in such a way that it can be easily replicated in communities throughout Jamaica. It is the hope that different private sector companies commission a SOURCE CRC, which will be developed on their part. The programme allows the private sector to leave a real mark on the landscape of development work in Jamaica and could become a real model for the international sector community.
What’s to come? The SOURCE intends to offer passport picture-taking and Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) Smartcard application, retrieval and top-up services. The changes in its opening hours from 9am-5pm to 10am-6pm is one of the other adjustments it has made to facilitate customers. “This is all part of an effort to make the UWI Mona SOURCE a one-stop shop for the community,” says Cameka Wright, administrative assistant, SOURCE. & Bytes Cable and Wireless Communications, owners of LIME, has inked a deal to buy out Columbus International Inc., owners of FLOW. The conditional agreement which was signed by the chief executive officers of both companies is worth US$3b and is said to aid both entities in accelerating their growth strategy and improving their service delivery. The merger will see the phone operations of LIME combined with the triple-play (broadband, fixed-line telephony and cable subscriber television) operations of FLOW. Jointly the new company will: “offer customers a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality products and services, and strengthen their position against larger competitors,” according to LIME. At present, FLOW has a customer base of 700,000 and B2B services offering fibre connectivity to 42 markets in the Caribbean, Central America and Andean Region through their subsidiary Columbus Networks. LIME has reach in 16 regional markets with 5.6m customers. Both parties will contribute their submarine cables to the venture. These will provide the international bandwidth required to give customers cable and internet services. Due to the availability of new submarine cables the cost of international bandwidth in the Caribbean has decreased. Therefore, customers will not have to pay heavy costs for internet services and they will have an increased speed at which to connect to the internet.

Usability: The Edge uses Samsung’s new software called the Revolving UI, which gives users a second, panelled home screen to swipe through, personalise and edit. The screen supports folders too, and notifications and missed alerts flash in its display. The colour of the Edge display can also be customized, as well as the message that appears when the phone is idle. A pull down feature gives quick access to tools such as a flashlight, voice recorder, ruler, stopwatch and timer. At night, the date and time can be set to display in the Edge screen.
Drawbacks:
The Edge display panels do not give users full control over its customization. While there is a choice of how many panels and apps to use, not all icons can be placed on those panels. The weather widget does not display a full forecast. In the case of folders, the Edge has a slight delay when opening. The phone is also very What does this all mean?
