The program for this project was to create a boardwalk that incorporated spaces for concessions, picnicking, locker rooms, restrooms, and quarters for the park ranger and life guards. The main influence of the design was the detailed joint known as the block and tackle, which is rigged into the framing system to open certain walls on the various modules. These openings frame the beach views. The boardwalk layout was influenced by a 12’ x 12’ grid plan that is used to orient the placement of the 12’ x 24’ modules. Each module contains a specific program and is highlighted by how the modules open up to the public and the natural environment.

Belmont Bridge Design Competition

Belmont Bridge, Charlottesville, VA In collaboration with Samantha Saunders.

Design competition for the redesign of the Belmont bridge in order to reconnect the downtown area with the surrounding neighborhoods. This diagram displays the various opportunities for connections to be established between the downtown mall area and the Belmont neighborhood.

Temporary disaster relief housing, designed to transform into a permanent residence. The modules are 25’ by 12’ by 14.5’. The main scheme was influenced by the octagonal base of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse that helped to shape the modular community layout design. Another influential implementation was the use of natural lighting as an energy resource. The design of the windows allows for the inhabitants to have optimal daylighting usage and pleasing views.

Paradise Creek Sustainable Nature Park

Paradise Creek Park- Part of the Elizabeth River Project located in Portsmouth, Virginia. In collaboration with Brittany Olivari, Regina Davis, Admad Darab, Samantha Saunders, Arianna Filipour, and Sarah Kohlhepp

Designed sustainable pavilion structure for the constructed wetland in Paradise Creek Park. The following structure serves multiple functions: an outdoor classroom, a picnic pavilion and a kayak launch. The amphitheater steps provide seating and highlights the existing topography, while the pavilion creates a much needed shaded area on site. The roof is butterflied to allow for water collection that could then run off into a rain garden.

Smithsonian Institute of Conservation, Theodore Roosevelt Island, Washington D.C. The Institute’s program is the research of various types of energy such as solar, geothermal, and wind. The design was inspired and influenced by the topography of the site. The program and the canopy structure of the Institute highlight a single line of topography. The program extends throughout the site to the various research pods allowing for more activation and exploration on Theodore Roosevelt Island.

Bellmeade Walkable Watershed Project

Bellemeade Walkable Watershed Project, Richmond, Virginia Created conceptual designs for retrofitting low impact development strategies including green roofs, green walls, and rain gardens for this commercial site. This site is to be the new headquarters for the Stormwater Management Facility of Richmond and serve as a demonstration site for the city.

ecoMOD- Affordable, Sustainable Housing design

ecoMOD

Designed renderings for a non-specific site to show flexibility of design. The renders were photoshopped to display material context of a basic siding and a detail of bark siding under the canopy.

Spandex Material Exploration The main purpose of the project was to explore a material’s properties and then create a 3 dimensional object using that material to the best of its abilities at a human scale. The stretchy property of the spandex material allowed for flexibility in molding the shape of the canopy structure over my studio desk.
