Wau Informations What is Wau?

Problems facing by Wau

A traditional large scale kite with complicated detailed plantation motifs design in Malay-

Characteristic of it: Symmetrical design.

Made from: bamboo strips & oil papers. ( structure and skin )

| Architecture Design Studio 04

Long time taken to produce the complicated and detail motifs on Wau.

Barely to see on general shops due to large scale. Mostly be represented in small scale of silver souvenir.

Lack of chance to be promote or play by the people due to the scale is not convenient.

COLOURS PALLETE

choice of colours If the colours clash / are more contrasting, the kite is considered not as good quality. Colour with bright reds and constrasting blues, it means the kite maker might be quick to anger and more emotional. A kite with shades of blues and purples, or in soft harmony, indicates a kite maker with a more peaceful nature.

Case Study Frank Gehry's Dancing House Construction period: 1994-1996 Style: deconstructivist

The building consists of unusual shapes and curvatures, influenced by the two dancers, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair.

The twin towers (one developed as cylindrical solid volume, the other as a tapering glass tower), supported by a number of sculptural columns, are combined to create a small covered entrance plaza at the ground level of the building. Comprising of a double-layer steel-supported glass curtain wall, the interior of the glass tower has engaged this curtain wall to be the actual wall for the building, whereas the sculptural outer layer acts as a screen for the office spaces underneath. The main exterior facade overlooks the river bank. It responds to the rich texture and scale of the adjacent row houses. Imitating the wave of the river, its staggered windows and horizontal striations obtains a streamlined pattern. It is constructed of precast concrete panels with a plaster finish which is common to the local architecture.

Crafting Skin |

Case Study Xiangcheng District Planning Exhibition Hall Lacime Architects The height of the building is particularly important, so we set the height of the building in line with those on the high-speed rail. With height fixed, length and width will be determined to be 46 meters in proportion to the column span and other factors. The outer appearance is made up of aluminium square rods. The standard segments comprised of the outer appearance size and spacing corresponds strictly to the column net. Each rod is divided into five equal parts and its inner side is treated with dark lines and its end side is treated with curling to make the building more flexible and soft. As for landscape, we emphasize on the application of the waterscape to ensure the full reflection by setting the road leading to the main entrance of the building on the side. The elegant curved profile of the building is inverted in the water, which is very charming. The image of the outer appearance is conceived from a musical instrument called Marimba. The building is solidified music. We hope that this small building can play the splendid music against the water sky

Crafting Skin |

Symmetrical design

The characteristic of Wau design, in symmetrical for both structures and skin(motifs design)

Breaking the symetrical

Mix and match each half of the selected iconic types of Wau in Malaysia, from that, we can see there are movements from the combination of Wau.

Dancing human movement (joyous)

Representing lines for movement (structure)

Finished up with flowing layers (skin)

Dancing human movement are to represent the status of joyful and happy.

Another characteristic of forming a Wau, structures and skin. Hence the skin is being emphasis to be form by this two components.

The layer of skin are applied in a flowing movement on the structures.
