The time when temperature starts dropping lower and fall starts progressing towards winter is beautiful. For garden owners, this is also a critical time when they need to prepare their plants for the upcoming season. As easy as it might feel to give in to the cosiness of the fall season, don’t! Fall is the time when you should be doing most of your garden preparation work in anticipation of the cold weather. It’s not all that hard and you’ll thank yourself later for the work done in advance. Below are a couple of ways to prepare your garden for the winter season ahead:
1. Things You Need to Get Rid Of First step in order would be to clear up all the mess. This means getting rid of all the dead vegetation, any plants that are currently diseased or infected and even all the weeds. Diseased plants should be either burned off or disposed away, they shouldn’t be included in preparing the compost.
2. Get Your Soil Tested It’s time to re-evaluate the conditions of your soil and find room for improvements. So get your garden soil tested and get information about your soil’s pH levels, lead content and organic matter levels. You should also learn the levels of nutrients like sulphur, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, etc in your soil. Once you have this knowledge, you can decide whether, and also how much, the soil quality needs any refinement.
3. Start Making Your Compost Have a bunch of fallen leaves spread all over your garden? Gather them all up and use them together with your green kitchen and household waste to create compost pile. The combination of green and brown materials actually makes composting happen faster.

4. Mulch the Plantation Beds Fall season is an excellent time to apply finished layer of compost to your soil. The nutrients get sufficient time to break down and enrich the soil quality. So start treating your plantation beds with a layer of mulch. But remember to not apply a very thick layer of mulch to the soil. During the winters as the soil freezes, many pests and diseases get destroyed. Applying the mulch too thickly could prevent the soil freezing and thus the killing of pests and diseases.
5. Buy a Quality Garden Netting Invest in some highly durable garden nettings that will protect your delicate plants from the harsh winter conditions like frost and even other danger factors like pests. Garden fleece is a great netting option that offers just the right insulation for the plants against the freezing temperatures.
6. Keep the Plants from Drying Out In winters, plants are highly vulnerable to losing all their moisture content and drying up. This needs to be avoided at all costs. Keep your plants wellreplenished with water even before the winter season actually starts. Water them regularly throughout the winters so that they contain enough moisture even in the face of dryness of winters.
