SALFORD

INTRODUCING

SALFORD Salford is a vibrant city in Greater Manchester and a key player in contributing to Manchester City Region’s economy. In the last 10 years, the city has been given a new lease of life with the most significant investment in Greater Manchester the regeneration of Salford Quays. Before the drastic transformation of the waterfront, the site was unused with the risk of becoming wasteland. Fast forward to today and the Salford waterfront is now Europe’s largest purpose-built telecommunications and media hub and is fast becoming one of the most exciting destinations in the UK.

Infrastructure In the last decade, billions of pounds’ worth of investment has been injected into Salford’s transport infrastructure to improve connectivity throughout the country. The plans will be hugely beneficial to the city of Salford, as they will provide easier access to the city from other areas of the country. •

Metrolink - Greater Manchester’s Metrolink is one of the best transport systems in the UK and currently carries around 20 million passengers every year. The network is the largest light rail station in the UK covering 57 miles. Construction commenced in January 2017 for the new Trafford Park line, which will link Salford to one of the largest indoor shopping centres in Europe, intu Trafford Centre. This is expected to open in 2021.

Bus - Salford has been at the heart of Greater Manchester plans in terms of improving bus travel. It is currently the most popular mode of public transport with 80% of public transport journey made by bus. Last year, First Group introduced a new service called Vantage, which has brought a quicker and more reliable bus connection between Leigh, Salford and Manchester. This route features a 4.5 mile trafficfree guided section – the North West’s first ever guided busway.

Rail stations - Salford Crescent railway station is perfectly placed for students to commute to the University of Salford from other districts of Greater Manchester such as Wigan and Bolton. An example of infrastructure investment is Salford Central railway station, which is currently undergoing a facelift with platform expansions taking place to facilitate longer carriages and more frequent services to stop at the station. This is due to be completed in 2019.

High Speed Two (HS2) - The ground-breaking plans will not only bring benefits to the core network, it will play a huge role in Salford’s future success. The official total cost for HS2 is £55.7bn. The HS2 route will slash journey times and give rail passengers on the existing network thousands of extra seats every day. The two phases of the planned rail network will be completed in 2033.

£800m Salford has generated more than £800m in GVA for the Greater Manchester economy, representing growth of 15.8% - the highest percentage increase in Greater Manchester and the second-highest actual increase behind Manchester.
