I am a

KNIGHT

By Meagan Whalen

perrin Fisher - Ashfahl

What is your favourite part about the grade you are in ? “I’m a junior. My favourite part about being a junior is probably being able to audition for chorale this year it’s a lot of fun. Music is something I play and listen to on a regular basis whenever I’m feeling lonely or stressed I go to music- it’s my go to. When I was in freshman year for example I was super stressed because I was overwhelmed with my schedule and everything being new but I had to stop and listen to some music and calm myself down and it really helped. I’ve been around music since I was really little and in choir since I was in middle school. My parents were a huge influence for me but I also love music because It’s a way to express yourself when words fail and I just think that’s really cool.”

When did your love for music begin? “I have been singing along with my parents since I could start and I just absolutely loved it from the start. My Mom played piano and sang and my Dad sang tenor in a barbershop quartet in high school. I play flute and this year and I’m learning saxophone because we’re really really short on saxophone in band so I’ve taken the task of learning the music by Monday but it’s really fun. I don’t sing in any groups outside of school because my life is a little crazy with school but I would if I had the time for it. It is something I am considering for college but it will always be a hobby of mine. I want to learn guitar again because I started taking lessons but I stopped because I ran out of time. I would also like to relearn piano. My dad is super proud that I am in chorale and my mom would be really proud. My mom passed away with breast cancer when I was 10, but I know she’s really proud of me.”

Are there any memories from band/choir/chorale that have stuck with you ? “A funny moment for me happened in band recently when I was playing the saxophone for grandparents day. It was my first week playing and I squawked right in the middle of the song it was embarrassing but, I was able to laugh about it after. My favorite memories of being involved with band, chorale, and women’s choir is spending time with the people before the concerts and after the concerts about how great we did and things we can work on more- just the whole experience.”

By Mikaela Mouw Many athletes all over the world have fallen into routines, habits, and superstitions that they believe make them perform better. Many of these athletes are some of the people you walk past everyday, your peers. As for myself, every game day I eat a bagel with peanut butter on it for breakfast. So I went around school and asked your fellow athletes about their own superstitions, and got some suprising results.

Cr eat ive Ch ristmas Idea

By Blake Demoff

Every year we all run into the problem of not knowing what we’re going to get our friends for Christmas. All out of ideas, we eventually give up and ask our parents to help. With this awesome creative idea, you can gift your friends this holiday. This gift is an easy yet creative DIY that will brighten up someone’s day and give them a smile. • First access a six pack of whatever drink you want to surprise your friend with. • Next get plastic eyes (any size) and brown pipe cleaners, with red perler beads, which could all be found at your local Michaels. • Finally just glue on the eyes, and the beads to the nose, and wrap on the pipe cleaner in little antler shapes. • Then you have the perfect small gift to give your friends or neighbors for Christmas. While surprising them, you will also lighten up there day! Photo courtesy- http://www.countryliving.com Info courtesy- http://www.sugarbeecrafts.com

Best Whi te Elephant Gif t Ideas By Haley Huntsinger

If you’re anything like my family, you not only know what a white elephat gift exchange is, but it is also a part of your holiday traditions. A white elephant gift can be bad and good depending on the giver, but they should always be random! Here are a few funny white elephant’s to give to someone this holiday season:

1. Swap the phrase “batteries not included” to “gift not included”

2. Save up a bunch of old gift cards that have all been used and buy one new one. Put on the gift “only one is useful, have fun figuring out which one!”

4. Cold hard cash... just freeze some money!

3. For someone with a sweet tooth, get them some chill pills! It’s as easy as candy in a jar, (that’s exactly what it is)

Signs You Shoul d B re akup With Your Signi fic ant O ther Befo re Ch ristma sBy Jessica Leos

t’s officially the holiday season, and love is in the air! Although love is in the air, that isn’t necessarily the case for everyone. If you’re in a questioning relationship and the holidays are approaching, you might want to take a look at these signs. Their family is lame. If you’re already dreading spending the holidays with them, why would you surround yourself with the people who raised them. Unless you like the awkward, uncomfortable feeling of engaging in meaningless conversation with people you’ve never met, than this one seems pretty obvious. Do yourself a favor and avoid the unpleasant encounters with their family by ditching them before Christmas.

You have no idea what to get them. Christmas shopping could be an Olympic sport in itself, but finding the perfect gift for your significant other? No one could ever be a gold medalist in that. Christmas shopping makes you realize how much you do or do not know someone. If you’ve come to the realization that you don’t know your companion, save yourself time and money. Just let them go before this Christmas season.

You’re already looking forward to a holiday without them. If you’re dreading everything you would usually look forward to, then it’s time to call it quits. Don’t spend another holiday having to put up with their questioning family or spend time watching another predictable Hallmark movie. Do both of yourselves a favor and call it off this holiday season.

The Age of Phones

By Luke Lin

How, and when were the first telephones made? The first telephone that was made, was in 1876, by Alexander Graham Bell. The first words from the very first telephone were, “Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you. Alexander Graham Bell, was born, in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, March 3, 1847. When the telephone, companies began to grow, Alexander then created the American telephone and telegraph, {AT&T}. This was a major telecommunications industry. In 1965 Teri Pall, made the first wireless telephone. In 1968 she sold her rights to the cordless phone to a manufacturer. In 1992 the wireless phone was called, the Simon Personal Communicator, and it was created by the International Business Machines [IBM} more than 15 years before Apple released the iPhone. The iPhone had the world open to new ideas of phone technology. With the iPhone came: Samsung, Motorola, and the Nokia. The newest model for the iPhone is the iPhoneX. For Samsung, it is the Galaxy S8. Phone technological advancements have become revolutionary throughout the past 140 years. From the first words through a landline, through the touch screen we have today, we might soon have the technology for floating, see through, light-weight phones.

Proof Of Power

Testimonies Straight from the OC Campus

A

By Tate M. Kiledjian

lthough the trials that God places in our lives can most commonly manifest in a physical way, they can occasionally appear in a more private and less physical manner. For Mrs. Kraut her greatest struggle emerged in the form of a vicious clinical depression. For those of you who don’t know, clinical depression is a mental disorder where the brain is not producing enough serotonin, which is a chemical that triggers happy feelings. In Mrs. Kraut’s case, she found herself being affected by her clinical depression to the point of inability to even get out of bed. “I remember not being able to even move myself to think about getting out of bed.” When it comes to mental health issues, many people are tempted to be skeptical and try to find solutions for the person suffering, but in Mrs. Kraut’s case it was a chemical imbalance that caused her to have deep suffocating episodes of depression. “People would ask me what in my life was causing my depression, as if there was some way they could fix it. They would also encourage me to pray about it and try to diagnose it based off of the Bible.” To Mrs. Kraut, her depression was more than that. She was at a time in her life when she should have been happy, but she felt a deep dissatisfaction that left her in a state of crippling depression. In the wake of an impending wedding and what seemed like a time where she should be happy, Mrs. Kraut was consumed by this feeling that even made it impossible to go to work. According to Mrs. Kraut the most important thing in her road to overcoming her depression happened during a Chapel Committee meeting. “I remember it was after one of my most significant episodes. I felt this compelling force to open up about what I was dealing with.” After opening up to her chapel class, she felt relieved and supported because in that same day 3 other students came to her to express their struggles with their own mental health. “Suddenly, God provided this community of people who were there to support and help me through this trial.” All of a sudden God had provided a support system for her and opened up an opportunity for her to become a supporter for students who were struggling.

“When you’re suffering from depression, even the most menial of tasks seems like an insurmountable mountain.” Although there is no definitive cure for clinical depression at this moment, Mrs. Kraut feels confident that she will be fine because she knows that the Almighty God is watching over her and taking care of her. In those moments it is definitely difficult, but she knows she will get through by the grace of God. “The thing that gets me through those seasons is knowing that eventually it will come to an end. I have to take each day by itself and push through because there is an end. Ever since her public acknowledgement of her clinical depression Mrs. Kraut has experienced God’s providence through the support of the community and in her ability to become a mentor to other people who are struggling with their mental health. Mrs. Kraut even had this to say, “If you are struggling with mental health, reach out to someone because you are not in this alone. Tell a friend, a parent, a teacher, or a counselor. Just tell somebody because the Lord is with you in this, and you can get through this.” Photo courtesy Mrs. Kraut

Popcorn on Speed Dial

By Emmarae Arensdorff Whether you are student or teacher, a break is something that we’ve all come to wait and yearn for. Well, this upcoming year there is one thing that won’t be given a break: your wallet. With great films like Deadpool 2 and the new Mary Poppins movie, people of all ages are going to be flooding the theaters to view these (hopefully) fantastic films. Here are just a few films that you might want to add to your list:

The Incredibles 2 (June 15, 2018) Even after 14 years of waiting for this film Disney still continues to make their fans withhold their excitement. Nothing is set in stone for this film- not even a date. With the production of Cars 3 and their recent film Coco, some speculate that the film will be released on June 15, 2018. However, what we do know is that the movie begins where it left off in the 2004 film. There will also be new heros that are going to be introduced in the film. But some critics claim that the film will focus on the struggles of our hero Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson), because after all he did get everything he wished for- a loving family, regaining his strength, and fighting crime. Others claim the film could focus on the upcoming super human Jack Jack, who possesses the powers of super strength, shape shifting, laser vision, teleportation, intangibility (walking through walls), and the ability to “flame on”. Could the film focus on the family trying to raise this child into a hero instead of a villain. Who knows?

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (November 16, 2018) As per the title, the film will focus on Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). There is great speculation about the contents of the film but there is some ideas of what this film will be about. After being held in the custody of the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA), Grindelwald escapes prison and is determined to once again bring magical beings to the light of humans. As Grindelwald builds a band of followers to execute his plan he also begins plotting to breed pure-blood wizards to rein over humans. Within the film we will again see Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol )and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But new characters will also be introduced in the film. Not only will we meet Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz), the mysterious woman from Newt’s past, but also her fiance Newt’s older brother Theseus (Callum Turner).

Tomb Raider (March 16, 2018) After being left alone in her early teens by her wealthy and bizarre father (Dominic West), Laura Croft (Alicia Vikander) developed a fiercely independent persona. Now at the age of 21, Croft struggles to maintain her education and make ends meet. Because of her father’s untimely and mysterious death, Laura finds herself caught between taking in his global corporation or creating a destiny of her own. With the help of a puzzle box given to her she finds an adventure of a lifetime . After solving the box she finds a key that opens the door to her father’s past, revealing his dangerous adventures all around the world and the reason he left her. While reviewing a video, taped by her now deceased father, it is revealed that in his adventures he uncovered a tomb called “The Mother of Death”. Within are artifacts allowing for death to engulf the entire and world Laura must do whatever it takes to stop those who wish to use its power. To find answers, Croft decides to venture on her own to seek out the reason of his death and find her true calling. It’s High School, The Secret is Out. By Haley Huntsinger

Christmas time is right around the corner and kids all around the world are anxiously awaiting for a big, jolly, bearded man to come riding in a grand sleigh guided by floating reindeer, who is known for bringing them exactly what they asked for this year. Not only is he able to fulfill their little, candy filled dreams by delivering exactly what they want, but the people who make the toys and junk they receive are small, pointy-eared elves! And if you think it can not get any better, this man, Santa, gives all these gifts out to all the kids in the world in one night! Isn’t that the most realistic thing you’ve ever heard? No, of course not! Now that we are all in high school, it seems silly for us to believe in a tale such as this, but when when we were little, it was the most jaw-dropping and magical experience we knew of. Personally, I loved believing in Santa; it was such an innocent and fun time period of my life. I now believe that everyone in high school has a story on how they found out about this famous myth, here are a few of them from around our campus. I asked our student body here at OC what age they were when they found out about the Santa scandal, out of a total of 20 that responded; 7 of them were younger than 8, 11 of them were between 8-12, 1 of them was above 12, and 1 never believed. As far as funny stories go, here are a few quotes from your fellow classmates:

“I always knew Santa was not real since I was little. We didn’t celebrate Christmas in my house, so I didn’t get any Christmas gifts until I started studying in the U.S. Now, I start to think that Santa is real because I get Christmas gifts every year.” - Sophia Chen ‘19

“I never wholeheartedly believed in him so when I had learned, it came as no shock. However, after learning, I told my friends I knew with 100% certainty that he was real for nearly 4 years. I think I’d done it to just mess with them.” - Caitlyn Campbell ‘21 “I was doubting if he was real or not so to put it to a test I gave “Santa” spoiled milk and the next day my dad was sick.” Alexis Barraza ‘21

“I realized he wasn’t real because I used to leave notes for Santa next to his cookies and milk, and in the morning he would leave a note back. I began to realize that it was my dad’s handwriting, also one time I saw him eating the cookies.” - Alyssa Moore ‘19

“My teacher was talking about it but, I still like thinking he is real. I kind of started to realize because for Christmas I got a dog (from Santa) and on my mom’s phone I saw videos of my dog two days prior.” - Kaitlyn Clancy ‘21

“My parents have always told me that Christmas was never about Santa or presents but it’s a time to remember Jesus’ birth and how we are to celebrate it.” -Mia Galdamez ‘20

“I caught my dad sneaking around and putting my present under the tree because I couldn’t sleep that night.” - Perrin Fisher-Asfahl ‘19

“We found my dad’s fingerprints on the glass of milk we put out for Santa.” - Andrew Valdez ‘21

The Great Divide S

By Parry Lin

ince international students have appeared more and more at schools in the US, different cultures have been brought together into American schools. Because of this trend, different ideas, personalities, and hobbies from the international students have also been brought into schools like Ontario Christian High School. These different cultures have not only brought new experiences to the students at Ontario Christian High School, but also caused a tremendous cultural shock to the international student. Especially in the way that international students deal with conflicts, how people think, or how to interact socially within the relationships of students at Ontario Christian. The issues that the international students face will sometimes be interesting, but they can also have negative repercussions. As an author who is also an international student, the problems the international students face in English is perhaps the most significant one. Because the United States is an extremely diverse nation that doesn’t ascribe to a certain race, many Asian cultures are also represented in the national make-up in the United States. However, this is not always the case. When it comes to deciding if someone is foreign or an Asian American, most people lean towards assuming that the person is foreign. Another thing that comes as a cultural shock to the Internationals is the differences in speech within social interactions. Sometimes the translation from Chinese to English is more difficult which in turn can cause confusion in social functions. International students also face problems with personality and behavior in class. Many teachers at Ontario Christian make an effort to encourage International students to voice their own opinion. However in Asia, most of the teachers do not encourage the open discussion of opinions because the classrooms in Asia are expected to be quiet. This difference in classroom conduct is another instance of the cultural differences that International students face. This difference can also be perceived by many people as a difference in personality. This is why some American teachers view International student as shy, when in reality this is not accurate. America as we know is a “direct” culture state which represents how people are speaking, and the way people are living. Because of this everything seems to be in contention with the culture of Asia. Although there are different Asian nations represented amongst the International student, the cultures represented are very similar. For students from Eastern Asia, people aren’t accustomed to people who speak directly, because in their culture speaking directly is a symbol of disrespect. That is why most International students do not feel comfortable speaking so directly, and this can sometimes be misconstrued as timidity. There are a lot of issues that International students face because they come from countries with completely different cultures. Personally, I think that it is difficult for International students to assimilate to this new American environment. However I believe with time, this cultural divide will be dissolved until there is no clear divide. Photo courtesy google.com

He was added as a member of the Leos family two years ago. A cute quirk about Beau is that “he sleeps like a human on his back.” Every monring, the two are found snuggling together to keep each other warm. At first Beau didn’t like Pudge, but now they protect each other. Last year the pool cleaner let Beau out and Pudge was inconsolable but luckily someone found Beau and kept him safe at their house until the Leos family could retreive him.
