Staff Spotlight
Every time you ooh and aah at a quilt you see here in the catalog, you have Karen to thank. Karen is our Quilt Sample Coordinator and—with scrupulous attention to detail—manages a packed and fast-moving sample sewing schedule. In 2020 alone, she oversaw the production of over 250 quilts.
When asked about her favorite part of her job, Karen’s reply was swift and clear, “I get to work with amazingly talented sewists, quilters, and pattern designers.” Our favorite part of Karen s job is getting to see the quilts she shows off as they come back from the quilter!
A dedicated sewist from a young age, Karen took up quilting as an adult after piecing together some old blocks her grandmother started but hadn’t been able to finish. “I was hooked after that.” Karen says.
A meticulous and accomplished maker, Karen often takes on exceptionally complicated paper-piecing patterns. Her most beloved finish? “My very favorite quilt I ve ever made is my Montana Cartwheel quilt, sewn up in batiks. The curved paper piecing was hard but fun for my first paper pieced project!” Karen, we are all duly impressed. When she takes a break from quilting, you’re most likely to find her devouring mystery, crime, and detective novels. Her beloved orange cat, Charlie, is equally happy to accompany during either pursuit.
