MULTITOOL MAINTENANCE A multitool by Leatherman, Victorinox or SOG is convenient in all kinds of situations. But how do you keep it in good shape? We’ll explain what you need to do to take care of your companion!

1.

3.

Prevention is better than cure. Keep your tool free from dust and sand so all parts keep running smoothly. Peeled an apple? Wash and dry the blade to prevent it from rusting.

Good oil will help prevent rust and ensure it opens smoothly. A drop of oil a week will do that for you! Too much oil will hold dirt and grease and can stain your clothes, so be careful. Ballistol is our favourite oil to keep metal surfaces rust-free. We like to use Nano-Oil 10W to have the hinge points run smoothly.

2. Clean it regularly. Even the spots you can barely reach. Use cocktail sticks, cotton swabs or tissues to remove dirt between the parts. Quite the precise work and a bit of a hassle. That’s why it’s important not to let it get too dirty!

edge pro apex When one knife sharpener conquered the world

B

en Dale learned how to sharpen knives from his father. In his hometown of Fort Hood (USA), he started sharpening knives for family and friends. One night, back in the 1980s, he sharpened a few chef’s knives in a friend’s restaurant.

A fish monger that dropped by noticed his raw sharpening talent and asked if Dale couldn’t sharpen a few knives for him. Ben started sharpening the fish monger’s knives weekly, and through word of mouth he got more and more work.

Shortly, Ben found himself having more work than time. He decided to create a solution for the increased workload. Hundreds of prototypes and thousands of razorsharp blades later, he found the ultimate solution: the Edge Pro Apex. A revolutionary sharpening system. Faster than free-hand sharpening, but with the same result. Some say even better! It guarantees to deliver the same quality a sharpening service would provide you. Great quality accessible for everyone. Like his father taught him how to sharpen, Ben Dale is now teaching the world.

REVIEW

EDEN XP 10X56 BINOCULARS

I

By Chris van Rijswijk’s bird photography blog Birdshooting.nl/en

photograph birds all around the world. From the arctic region, to my hometown of Rotterdam. In Rotterdam I love to shoot Bank Swallows. These birds only need small heaps of sand to nest. You can see my photos and the stories behind them on birdshooting.nl.

To observe 'my' Bank Swallows from safe distance, I use the Eden XP 10x56 binoculars. It allows me to estimate when the young will fly so I can be in time to place my tent. This roof prism binoculars is a little larger and heavier than the Eden XP 10x42 that I have previously tested. The larger size makes it feel comfortable in your hands. I wear glasses, but that doesn’t mind when you use these. The overall quality is really amazing.

10

The field of vision is pretty wide which makes it really easy to follow a bird. The image is bright and sharp, even along the edges. The overall image is really beautiful. The contrast and colours are realistic. After a morning of

STROPPING A KNIFE Many people associate stropping with old school barber shops. Before every shave, barbers sharpen their straight razors over a belt. They use a polishing compound to achieve the maximum sharpness. But did you know that stropping also works miracles for pocket knives and kitchen knives? Strop like a barber!

1.

3

Take a leather strop and apply a little compound. If you place both over a heat source shortly, applying the compound will go much easier.

Now do it the other way around. On the same angle, place the knife on the strop and move it over the leather to the back of the blade. Make sure every piece of the edge touches the leather. Repeat this a couple of times and then do the exact same thing on the other side of the edge. Ultimate sharpness for all your knives!

2. Put your knife on the leather at about a 15 degree angle. Move it very gently in the direction of the edge. Adjust the angle until you feel the blade is starting to ‘bite’ into the leather. Stop! Now you’ve found the correct angle.

P RO- TIP Choose DMT or Wicked Edge diamond paste when you want to sharpen harder steel types.
