Many people can pass the bar. We are looking for those who raise it.

Find yourself in a place Where success is measured more by innovations advanced than hours billed. Where challenges are sought, not simply accepted. Where a career is an open road, not a narrow path. This is the new age of IP. This is Knobbe Martens.

Who We Are Founded in 1962, Knobbe Martens is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent intellectual property law firm, with approximately 300 professionals, including U.S. and foreign lawyers and patent agents representing some of the world’s most prestigious clients. We take pride in the exceptional quality of our work and the depth of our service. We provide aggressive representation while fostering a friendly, collaborative work environment — one built on trust, respect, and the free exchange of thoughts and ideas. We are truly a team. We are actively involved in every aspect of IP and technology law across myriad industries. Our areas of expertise include litigation and transactions regarding patents, trademarks, copyrights, unfair competition, trade secrets, data privacy, and transactions and disputes where technology is at the core of the legal issues. Approximately half of our practice involves client consultation, agreements, licensing, and the preparation and prosecution of patent, trademark, and copyright applications, including appeals, oppositions, and cancellations. The other half is in the area of intellectual property and technology-related litigation, and post-grant patent proceedings, including IPRs. We represent clients in litigation in state and federal courts nationwide, including appellate courts. We regularly argue appeals in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the exclusive appellate court for patent cases. Our record of success is both long and lasting. Our clients have prevailed in the vast majority of cases that have proceeded through trial and appeal, with many of these cases resolving important legal issues in published opinions.

Your Path to Success Associate Opportunities We provide the opportunity to be on the cutting edge of innovation, protecting some of the world’s most exciting ideas and inventions. Most of our associates hold undergraduate degrees in engineering disciplines or in physical or life sciences, and are registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Additionally, many have advanced degrees in science or engineering. However, legal education and technical experience are just part of what makes a Knobbe Martens attorney. We also look for people who are team-oriented, personable, and well-rounded. In other words, who you are and where you want to go means as much as what you have done. We only hire associates we believe have the ability to become partners in our firm. That’s why we provide perhaps the fastest career track in the entire legal profession, with no cap on the number of associates admitted to the partnership each year.

Associate Training As a first-year associate, you will be afforded responsibilities and client interaction that would take years to acquire at other firms. You will also be provided with a mentor-partner to nurture and facilitate your professional growth and development. In addition, you will be actively trained in our practice areas, as well as on topics such as client service and practice development. As you progress through the firm, you will meet regularly with your mentor-partner to review your performance and goals. You will also receive a formal annual review. Continuing legal education is stressed throughout your career, including through our weekly in-house educational lunches, bimonthly practice group meetings, and other educational programs inside and outside of the firm.

Summer Associate Program Knobbe Martens offers a Summer Associate Program to students who have completed their first or second year of law school. Summer Associates are mentored by the finest IP attorneys in the country. Summer associates are assigned a partner mentor and a host associate to introduce them to the practice of law, as well as business and social opportunities. As a Summer Associate, you will acquire experience in several of our practice areas: Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, Licensing, Due Diligence, and Opinions. In addition, you will take an active role in our litigation projects, including attending trials, court hearings, and depositions. Most of our attorneys begin in the Summer Associate Program. Therefore, the program seeks to immerse students in all aspects of our culture. Client meetings, social outings, weekly educational lunches, and contact with a variety of partners and associates will provide you valuable insight into our firm, and your place in it.
