Research Centers Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute Building a Bridge Between the Tourism Industry, Organizations, Destinations, and Higher Education Through Excellence in Interdisciplinary Research

College of Health and Human Performance

Through a generous gift by the Eric Friedheim Foundation, the Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute (EFTI) was named in April 2011. EFTI will expand the foundation of the Center for Tourism Research and Development established in 1992 by the tourism faculty to serve tourism destinations and industries. The Institute is committed to excellence in research, and has evolved to become a major institute for tourism research in Florida and beyond. EFTI facilitates interdisciplinary research projects focusing on a wide range of travel, tourism, and hospitality opportunities. We are dedicated to being the premier academic tourism research institute in the country with a focus on contributing to the long-term sustainability of communities in a global society. Center Director: Brijesh Thapa, Associate Professor, Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management

Letter from the Dean

W

e are pleased to provide you with this annual review of the research activities of the

faculty and staff in the College of Health and Human Performance. I think it will be clear as you review this material that the faculty and staff in the College are engaged in a quest for excellence in each of their research areas. Our faculty continues to excel in research and extramural funding. Not only are our research faculty members funded by prestigious agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, NASA and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, but our faculty research appears in some of the nation’s leading research journals. Our faculty and staff researchers are daily striving and innovating in their efforts to move their research to the top tier in the nation. Our quest for excellence continues…

Center for Digital Health and Wellness

Indeed, our faculty and staff researchers are “sought out” across the country to serve on research review panels and provide technical research assistance on numerous projects. In addition, students from around the globe continue to seek to study with faculty in our College. Further, graduates of our programs are employed in some of the nation’s leading research institutions. Our quest for excellence continues…

Revolutionizing Health Behavior and Care with Information and Communication Technology The Center for Digital Health and Wellness conducts domestic and global research, evaluation, and training with diverse collaborators on the application of new information and communication technologies to health promotion, disease prevention, wellness, and epidemiological surveillance. Areas of emphasis include eHealth and mHealth, defined as the use of mobile and/or cellular phone technology to healthcare, health promotion, and health education. The Center for Digital Health and Wellness at the University of Florida was established in 2010 and is directed by Dr. Jay Bernhardt, former director of the National Center for Health Marketing at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Center was previously known as the Florida Center for Health Promotion. Center Director: Jay Bernhardt, Professor and Chair, Health Education and Behavior

This year’s Research Report features the work of our faculty in Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management. Our research in this area is broad and comprehensive. Faculty members in this area are studying the impact of parks and recreational facilities on obesity and physical activity. They are examining the influences of after school programming on a variety of youth behaviors. They are studying the dynamics of sports behavior and performance from a participant and observer viewpoint. Indeed, faculty members in this area are involved in projects around the world – such as a project to develop tourism education in South Africa, projects to increase tourism capacity in Russia, and projects that bring together tourism leaders of Armenia and Turkey. Our quest for excellence continues…

Center for Exercise Science Studying the Anatomical, Physiological and Psychological Consequences of Human Movement and Relationships to Health and Disease The Center for Exercise Science researchers are engaged in studies designed to improve our understanding of the basic mechanisms that underlie exercise-induced changes in the body at the organ, tissue, cellular, and molecular level. Further, CES scientists are investigating applied topics such as the development of rehabilitation techniques for regaining motor control after stroke, maintaining optimal health, and delaying age-related declines in physiological function. The primary goal of scientists in CES is to improve human health by advancing knowledge through research. Moreover, CES provides an outstanding laboratory environment to educate University of Florida students and post-doctoral fellows who will become the next generation of health-related exercise scientists and clinicians. Center Director: Scott Powers, Distinguished Professor, Applied Physiology and Kinesiology

Our Quest for Excellence Continues: Graduate Student Research Day

Thanks to the many faculty and staff throughout the College who continue to pursue their research agendas with great effort and success. Thanks also to Dr. Jim Cauraugh, Associate Dean for Research and his assistant Ms. Dorothea Roebuck for their work on this publication.

The Fall 2010 term ended with a Graduate Student Research Day in Alligator Alley. Graduate students from the departments of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management (TRSM) and Applied Physiology and Kinesiology (APK) presented their research to their peers and college faculty. The research exchange was deemed a resounding success by attendees. Special thanks are extended to three faculty sponsors: Dr. Yong-Jae Ko (TRSM), Dr. Mark Tillman (APK), and Dr. Tom Clanton (APK). Currently, data are being collected for a second round of our superb graduate students sharing their intriguing ideas and science.

I hope you enjoy this review of our research and that you will agree with me that our quest for excellence continues. Sincerely,

In 1992, several faculty members in the Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism with common research interests formed the Center for Tourism Research and Development. This generous gift from the Eric Friedheim Foundation will provide an impetus to unite collaborations and develop groundbreaking tourism approaches and research. Currently, we are addressing multiple tourism avenues including crisis management, marketing, sport and event management, eco-tourism, heritage, coastal and marine, and hospitality management.

Funded research activities by TRSM faculty include:

This munificent gift is the inaugural Center naming in our College. Thus, EFTI represents a special synergy when private support joins faculty research interests in a community of scholars. Certainly, EFTI will influence policy and produce high-impact scholarship as members’ expertise and knowledge are sought by the tourism industry in Florida and across the world.

Purpose: Study the role and impact of leisure services, including tourism and sports, on individuals, society and the environment

Mr. Friedheim and his wife, Edith Hall Friedheim, were dedicated travel enthusiasts who served tourists and native Floridians for years in and around Jacksonville. Indeed, Mr. Friedheim was the owner and Editor-in-Chief of the influential weekly Travel Agent Magazine. As a lifetime journalist and publisher, Mr. Friedheim was influential in developing Florida as a tourist destination.

TRSM Research

The Center for Tourism Research and Development has received a significant gift from the Eric Friedheim Foundation to continue its outstanding research in the academic discipline of tourism and the practical application of economics, sustainability, and marketing to the science of tourism. The Center has been renamed the Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute (EFTI) in honor of Mr. Friedheim and the generosity of his Foundation.
