MUSIC
It's a night of doom, madness, electronica, hip-hop, gloom, and a sprinkle more madness at The Spill on June 21, as local doom rapper Garbageface releases his new mixtape, Obduracy. He's on tour across Ontario with Toronto's Animalia, and he'll be joined by ELMS, Le Stack, and Bloody Boy Blue. The Chemong Lodge patio is open once again, and you can check out live music outside every Friday and Saturday evening, including Bowmanville folk-rock trio Reckless Minstel Buskers (7th), country-rock singer-songwriter Tami J Wilde (20th), and rock band High Waters Band (27th). See The Wire's full listings for more. Just named the Folk Festival's 2014 Emerging Artist Award winners, The Lonely Parade are releasing their debut album at the Red Garnet on June 14. This all-girl trio mix indie-rock, alternative, and surf, and they do a badass cover of Spice Girls' “Wannabe”! A killer hip-hop show coming to the Red Dog on June 21, featuring Winnipeg's Grand Analog, a band that mix hip-hop with r&b, jazz, reggae, and rock, and use a ton of live instrumentation in their show. Peterborough's Danny Taro opens. $8 / $10.
PUB CRAWL Not seeing anything in our featured events that strikes your fancy? Well even when there are no big name shows in town, there's always live music somewhere, and often at three or four places at the same time! Every Thursday, head down to the Black Horse for their weekly jazz jam, featuring Rob Phillips, Chelsea Bennnett, and whoever happens to stop by. The Publican House Brewery is now hosting live music on their patio most Friday nights, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons, including Fiddlin' Jay's Celtic Jam on June 8 and local bluesman Wylie Harold on June 27. The Sapphire Room has several events this month – their monthly Zodiac Party for Geminis with music from Hodezilla and Mecasimon on June 7 and an 'off-the-wall' record party on June 10. See award-winning country singer-songwriter Art Lajambe play a matinee show at the Porch & Pint on June 8. Listen to acoustic rock covers from Brian Haddlesey every Friday and Saturday night at McThirsty's Pint. Or belt out some tunes at the Puck N Pint's weekly open mic night every Friday hosted by Andy. Canadian Music Week 2014
Another Canadian Music Week has come and gone. With dozens of venues scattered around Toronto, you had to plan your route carefully to catch as many great acts as possible. Here is a rundown of the highlights. Highs started our week off. Their up-beat, three- way harmonizing island drumming feel put us in the best mood. We caught Sea Perry at Handlebar. We had really been looking forward to catching their set, despite the thin crowd, their alt-country rockabilly sounds didn't disappoint. We made our way down Queen to the legendary Gladstone Hotel where we caught two of the best sets of the week. Yellerkin, was by far the best discovery we made. They somehow fused a fast-paced synthy vibe with some haunting harmonies and some catchy beats leaving us wanting so much more. They weren't too hard to look at either. Finally, we saved one of our favourite acts for last. For Esme, fronted by Wire Award nominee and all around babe, Martha Meredith, released some new electronic dance jams in front of a packed crowd at the Gladstone. Check out our twitter page to see some pics. Cheers to CMW for another great new music hangover. - BB
Summer Festival Shout-Outs The Canadian music festival scene seems to be literally exploding. With countless festies bringing us together for weekends of ecstasy and debauchery, it really seems unfair that we can't afford to go to them all. Luckily for us- the Wire gets hooked up and we plan on hitting as many as possible. A few of the festivals that we are most excited for are Field Trip- put on by Arts and Crafts- Field Trip is hosting acts such as our favourite maniac, Gord Downie who will share the stage with the Sadies, alongside The Kills, Chvrches, Interpol, Fucked Up and Austra, just to name a few. Fort York will be bumpin'. A month later at the same venue, TURF will be showcasing some awesome indie acts such as Born Ruffians, Gary Clark Jr., July Talk and Shovels and Rope. Not to mention a sweet array of food trucks, all just a few minutes walk from downtown TO. We also plan on heading to Boots & Hearts to see just how big this festival is getting. There's nothing like a country ho-down to make you realize just how crazy Ontario's music fans are and we can't wait to see what surprises the festival has in store this year. Oh and Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan and Toby Keith will apparently be there too. Osheaga held in downtown Montreal will simply be out of this world. Basically the Bonnaroo of the north (minus the dust and 100 degree weather), there just isn't enough time in the day to see all of the great bands they have playing and we couldn't be more excited. Bluesfest, in its umpteenth year as one of the most eclectic festivals has another unreal lineup including the Barenaked Ladies, Queens of the Stone Age, Snoop Dog, Collective Soul and Moist.Riot Fest is a new fesitval to Toronto. Migrating from Denver and Chicago, it brings the likes of Metric, The National, The Cure and The Flaming Lips to Downsview Park. In conclusion, The Wire recommends that if you have a job where you work weekends, quit. Oh, and let us not forget the Peterborough Music Fest where Tegan and Sara will be playing, for FREE. On a Wednesday. We can't believe it. See you in the fields with your rubber boots and short shorts.- BB
