Art Journey Art Sale & Show 2014

From Our Publisher

Welcome to the November and second issue of our great little local newspaper. We have decided to rename our publication Know Smiths Falls Perth to better reflect the communities that we serve. I am proud to say that our first edition had a great reception and look forward to serving our communities for years to come. The Smiths Falls and District Arts and Culture Council held their 2014 Art Journey Show and Sale this weekend at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre. The show displayed some amazing pieces of art by local artists. It also gave visitors the opportunity to be up and close with the artists. Such local artists as Vera Burt were on hand. Haunted Tales on the Rails

The Eastern Ontario Railrod Museum held their Haunted Tales on the Rails in Smiths Falls on October 25th. The evening was filled with spirits and ghost and tales of the dead and not so dead. Many people attended this great event and organizers put on a great show. By all accounts many were scared and yet had loads of fun! TWO GUYS DARK FRUITCAKE (part 1) Christmas Fruitcake-bah-yuck. That’s what folks sometimes say, but we have baked over 200 lbs of fruitcake so far, so we have a lot of confidence in our recipe, which we happily share with you. Part 1 is the marinating of the fruit. We soak our fruit in brandy for minimum of 1 month. Minimum. 2 cups raisins (mix of golden and Thompson) 1 cup Sultanas 1 cup candied cherries (mix of red and green) 1/2 cup mixed fruit 1/2 cup candied peel 1 cup diced dates 1 cup brandy* (more as needed) Mix all ingredients in large covered bowl. Do not refrigerate. Stir every two to three days. The fruit, especially the dates will absorb the brandy. Add a splash or two if fruit looks dry. After the second week you should not need to add more brandy and there should be no “puddle” of brandy in the bottom, but continue stirring and don’t let the fruit get dried out. This is the last opportunity to add more brandy (if you are so inclined). You can add more but don’t let it too wet. Resist eating it. Or you won’t have enough for the cake. *James says: If you don’t drink, this is not the recipe for you. There are recipes for fruitcake without alcohol, brandy is required here. *Luc says: Buy dates already diced.. Having to chop them is not worth the time. Check out the December newspaper for part 2.
