aying Goodbye to a Tradition

‘The Final Countdown” is what the theme is this year for Knoxville’s final Boomsday celebration. WATE 6 On Your Side Staff
A
fter a 28 year run, what has been deemed as the nation’s largest Labor Day fireworks show will no longer appear on Knoxville’s calendar of events. Boomsday started as a small 15 minute show and grew into a spectacular 25 minute fireworks show choreographed to music. A radio station called U 102 came up with the idea in the 1980’s, when Star 102.1 took over the frequency continued the tradition. Former on air personality Jeff Jarnigan said they were uncomfortable with the large project until the mayor weighed in. “It’s amazing from a show that we didn’t know if we’d have 20,000 to show that regularly gets over a quarter of a million people a year,” said Jarnigan. “Mayor Ashe walked in and said, ‘we aren’t here to discuss if we are going to do this, we are here to discuss how we are going to do this.’” Ashe said he wanted to focus on water front development and Boomsday seemed like the perfect plan. “To have the fireworks displayed on the Henley Street Bridge was really exciting,” he said. “It’s a way of highlighting the water front and the Tennessee River.” Jarnigan said during the second year of Boomsday they started to add entertainment and music, but over the years the expense has increased with the show’s popularity. “When tourism guides are putting out articles about
this being the place to be on Labor Day, to do away with it is tough,” said Jarnigan. For festival goers, the loss is still hard. “I’ve always enjoyed going to Boomsday. I grew up going to Boomsday,” said Kate Shriver of Knoxville. “I think it’s a great community event.” Knoxville resident Kate Schriver said she almost didn’t believe the announcement because it has been such a staple for Knoxville. Others, like Jonathon Jones said he wanted to continue the summer tradition with his kids. Chris Protzman, the General Manager of Scripps Radio Group, which includes Star 102.1 said even though he is sad to see the show go, he is looking to the future. “You want something that is economically viable to continue and still celebrates the traditions of Knoxville,” he said. “This then presents and opportunity to turn a leaf and brain storm a new idea, a new approach.” Protzman said they plan on making this year’s show bigger and better than ever. Schedule of events The weekend-long series of events will begin September 4 with the Knoxville Powerboat Classic and end on Sunday with Boomsday 2015 starting 3 p.m. Visitors can expect live music, games and food vendors. The evening will wrap up with more than five tons of dynamite lighting to sky to the soundtrack featuring popular music. “There’s going to be a lot of surprises,” said Bumpas. “We want to pay a huge tribute to a festival or an event that has been a part of our lives for a lot of year and really send
it off in a grand way.” This event is free to the public. Friday, September 4 2015 Knoxville Powerboat Classic at Volunteer Landing, Tennessee River from 10:30 a.m.-noon testing / 1-5 p.m. races Tennessee Soccer vs Navy at UT’s Regal Soccer Stadium starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 5 2015 National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Knoxville Memorial Stair Climb at Sunsphere at World’s Fair Park, starting at 9 a.m. 2015 Knoxville Powerboat Classic at Volunteer Landing along Tennessee River starting at 11 a.m.-noon testing / 1-5 p.m. races Sunday, September 6 Tennessee Soccer vs Murray State at UT’s Regal Soccer Stadium starting at 6:30 p.m. Boomsday 2015 Volunteer Landing, Neyland Drive Festivities including family-friendly entertainment and food vendors begin at 3 p.m. Live Music on the Q100.3 Main Stage is presented by Xfinity and Ingles. Artists to be announced. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. with music provided by Star 102.1. For more information visit Visit Knoxville’s website.

from theeditor | Growing up here in Knoxville with great traditions. Each season there are just some things you “have” to do being a Knoxvillian. Fall is probably packed with the most things to do and is my favorite time for those family traditions. Going to Friday night high school football games, then cheering for the Vols on Saturday. Those beautiful days when the leaves start to change and it’s time to go to Cades Cove for a picnic. However, Boomsday has been one of my favorites and seemed to announce the beginning of fall. I was a sophomore in high school when the first Boomsday lit up the skies and while the faces I have attended with through the years have changed the excitement of the show has remained. While saying good-bye to a tradition is always hard, we sometimes have to close the door on old traditions so new ones can begin. -

eplacing old elements, such as doors, windows and siding, in general yielded a better financial return than bigger remodeling projects, such as additions. But real estate agents and remodelers say updated kitchens and baths still bring a significant payoff, especially at resale time. The report found that kitchen projects yielded a higher return than bath projects, with a minor kitchen remodel adding 82.7 percent of the project’s cost back to the home’s value. Kitchens are important, because would-be buyers often overestimate how much they would cost to update. If you have a dated kitchen a buyer is probably going to think that in order to redo that kitchen, they’re going to have to spend $40,000 or $50,000. But the average cost of a minor kitchen remodel – new cabinet doors, appliances, countertops, sink, faucet, paint and hardware – was $18,856 nationwide, according to the Cost vs. Value report. Savvy shoppers can do it for less than the buyer assumes.
Did You Know?...
Approximately 50% of an average home’s utility bills are wasted by loss of heat and heat gain through untreated windows.
But, like the front door, it’s important to do the right kitchen remodel. Adding a $75,000 kitchen to a $100,000 house is unlikely to yield $75,000 in value, although it may make you a happy chef. As a general rule, look to spend about 25 percent of the home’s value for a new kitchen and 12 percent to 15 percent for an updated bathroom according to many contractors calculations. Putting an ultramodern kitchen into a 100-year-old Tudor home isn’t smart, either. Whatever your home improvement is, designing new spaces in a fashion that’s incongruous with the rest of the house’s architectural vernacular doesn’t really add value and can detracts. Renovations within the existing envelope of your home – those that don’t require you to build an addition or expand the roof and foundation – often return more value than building extra rooms onto your home. For one thing, they’re much cheaper. Converting an attic into a bedroom ranked third of the 35 improvements in the Cost vs. Value report, returning 84.3 percent of the amount spent. Turning attics into usable space is a popular and profitable improvement in many areas where much of the housing is older. Replacing windows with French doors that open to the backyard is another popular, and not very expensive, renovation project. It makes the room feel bigger and gives more natural light. Among the home improvement projects these days, many focus on updating the envelopes of homes with new siding, windows and insulation. For people who plan to stay in their homes, investing in those projects, as well as in more energy-efficient heating and air conditioning systems and appliances, saves money all year. The resale value is one factor to consider in a remodeling project, but the value to you as an occupant matters as well. This is especially important if you plan to stay in the home for a long time. So if you are wanting to start the remodeling process. Decide if you are wanting to increase the value of your home for others or simply for yourself. Consult a Realtor in the area to see what potential buyers are expecting and the value of homes in your neighborhood. Doing your “homework” and some sweat equity will always be a good start to your project.

LEAN OUT Stimulant-Free Metabolism Support beverlyinternational.com Take a look at the label on most of today’s weight loss products and you will see little or no mention of “fat transport”, despite the fact that this process is essential to getting lean. To get leaner, you need to lose weight, but not just any kind of weight. You need to reduce your fat weight -- what scientists term “fat mass”-- while holding onto your muscle mass. Most of your fat mass is stored in adipose tissue. To reduce it, the fat needs to be (1) extracted from adipose tissue and (2) transported to tissues like muscle and the liver where it can be (3) burned for energy. Beverly’s R&D scientists have assembled a meticulously balanced cast of ingredients in Lean Out that supports all three of these essential processes and more.

The 7 Best Exercises for Your IT Band BY JASON FITZGERALD
R
unners know all too well that any sort of sharp pain—whether it’s in the shins, knees, or ankles—can put a sudden end to training days. One of the most common running injuries is illiotibial band (IT band) syndrome, which occurs when the IT band becomes inflamed. The result: a sharp pain that radiates outside your knee that can stop you in your tracks. IT Band So where is the IT band exactly? It’s a thick, fibrous band of connective tissue that runs down the outside of your thigh, originating from your gluteal muscles and tensor fascia latae (TFL) and ultimately connecting just below your knee to your tibia. ITBS affects both seasoned and beginner runners, and if not managed correctly, it can become an ongoing and chronic injury.
But just because you’re not running doesn’t mean you should be sitting on the couch! Like most running injuries, recovery requires some active work. These exercises are specifically designed to treat ITBS and get you back to running healthy. For demos of each move, find a video for the routine here.
Perform these moves every other day while injured, and use the alternating days for core work or other strength exercises that don’t aggravate the area. This routine can help heal your IT band injury within a week or two if it’s a minor case. (If the pain persists, find a doctor who specializes in running injuries.) For the workout: You'll need a piece of rubber tubing, also called a therapy band or theraband, for extra resistance. (Start with low or medium resistance bands and move to a stronger resistance when it becomes too easy.) Modify the number of reps or take extra time between exercises if necessary. If you don’t currently have ITBS, you can do this routine once a week for prevention.
Because the IT band is so intricately connected to the gluteal muscles, when your glutes are weak or tired, the result is often decreased knee stability, meaning your knee can be pulled either inward or outward excessively.
The good news? When it comes to ITBS, prevention is definitely the best medicine. Studies have shown that strengthening your hips and glutes is one of the most effective ways to prevent ITBS. But if you're already injured, don’t panic. There’s still plenty you can do to help treat your injury and prevent it from recurring. The ITBS Rehab Routine If you’ve been diagnosed with ITBS, the first thing you need to do is stop running—completely—for seven to 14 days.

4. Side Step/Shuffle Place a theraband around your ankles (the band should be tight enough so it provides constant resistance). With knees slightly bent, take 10 lateral steps. Still facing the same direction, take 10 more steps back to starting position. That’s one set. Do 5 sets of 10 steps in each direction. 5. Pistol Squat Stand with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent. Lift your right foot off the ground and extend it forward. Lower into a squat position, sending hips bacck as if sitting back into an imaginary chair with knees safely positioned over feet. Return to starting position. Do 10 reps per side. 6. Hip Hike Stand on your right foot. With your pelvis in a neutral position, drop the left side so it is several inches below the right side of your pelvic bone. Activate your right hip muscle to lift your left side back to starting position. Do 20 reps per side. 7. Iron Cross Lie faceup with your arms out to your sides. Swing your right leg over your torso and up to your left hand. Repeat with your left leg. Do 10 reps per side.
What Causes IT Band Syndrome
A weak butt is simply a side effect of our modern lifestyles: too much sitting and not enough strength training. On the other hand, fatigue can be caused by overtraining: increasing your mileage too quickly or running too fast before you’re ready.
reps per side.
More Recovery Advice
IT Band Pain 1. Lateral Leg Raise Lie on your right side with a theraband around ankles. Lift your left leg to about 45 degrees in a controlled manner, then lower. Do 30 reps per side. 2. Clamshell Lie on your right side with your knees together and a theraband around lower thighs. Your thighs should be about 45 degrees from your body and your knees bent at 90 degrees. Open your legs like a clamshell without moving your pelvis; keep it slow and controlled. Do 30 reps per side. 3. Hip Thrust Lie faceup with your knees bent and feet on the ground. Lift one leg so your weight is on the opposite leg and your back. Using your glutes, lift your hips, then lower. Do 25
Foam roll—gently. A foam roller can help the healing process, but avoid rolling the IT band itself, as it may aggravate it further. Instead, gently roll the hips, glutes, quads, and hamstrings for about one minute per muscle to loosen the muscles and any scar tissue that may be constricting movement. Ice it. Ice may provide some pain relief, especially in the initial stages of your injury. Try icing any painful areas after performing the routine for about 15 minutes. Try a test run. If you haven’t felt pain in seven to 14 days, then it’s time for a short, easy test run. Use a treadmill or stick to a flat, even surface (downhill running makes ITBS pain worse because it makes the supporting musculature that caused the injury in the first place to work overtime). This article was written by USATF-certified running coach Jason Fitzgerald, a 2:39 marathoner and head coach of Strength Running.

Outings have included nature exploration hikes, citizen science activities (bird banding, monarch butterfly tagging), bicycling, disc golf, museum visits, whitewater rafting, and even overnight camping in the Smokies. In the next year we have plans for partnering with up to 3 new agencies and offer a greater diversity of outdoor activities.
The Knoxville ICO provides safe and fun nature outings and wilderness adventures for youth here in east Tennessee. We are a 100% volunteer-run outreach program of the Harvey Broome Group and all activities are free or low cost to partner agencies and participants. Our activities cost money. For 10 to 15 participants it costs $200 for an overnight in Cades Cove, $500 for whitewater rafting on the Pigeon River, $120 for an afternoon of kayaking on Fort Loudon Lake, or $70 for lunches on a day hike or museum visit. If we need to provide transportation, we need another $400 a day for a school bus and driver. Fall is for planting
A
ll spring-blooming bulbs need a period of cold dormancy to bloom. Plant bulbs in fall to ensure a beautiful spring display. If deer or other critters frequent your yard, plant bulbs they don’t like to nibble, such as daffodil, crown imperial, grape hyacinth, Siberian squill, allium, fritillaria, English bluebell, dog’s-tooth violet, glory-ofthe-snow, winter aconite, or snowdrop.
Many vegetables thrive in cool weather, including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, radishes, rutabaga, spinach, and Swiss chard. Many fall-harvested crops should be planted in early August to give them enough time to mature. Lettuce, spinach, and other greens with a short maturity time can be planted later in the season. Extend the growing season by planting them under floating row covers or cold frames that will shield plants from frost but still allow light, air, and water to penetrate. Many root crops taste sweeter when they’re harvested after frost. Fall is the best time to establish new turfgrass and do most lawn chores. If you live in the North, cool-season grasses such as bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass should be fertilized in early September and again in late October or early November to give a boost for earlier spring green-up. In the South, avoid fertilizing dormant warm-season grasses unless they have been overseeded with winter ryegrass. Fall is an ideal time to plant trees and shrubs. The weather is cool but the soil is still warm enough for root development. Before digging, always check with your local utility companies to locate any underground lines. Always plant trees and shrubs at their natural soil lines. Keep newly planted trees or shrubs well watered until the ground freezes so they get a good start before going into full dormancy during winter.
