SPIRITED FAMILY & MWR EVENTS Halloween, celebrated each year on October 31, is a mixture of ancient Celtic practices, Catholic and Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that blended together over time to create the holiday we know today. In ancient times, people were superstitious believing that the dead can return to Earth on Halloween. They would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off evil spirits and roaming ghosts. In the 19th century, Halloween became a more community-based children’s holiday where people looked forward forward to parades, costumes, and sweet treats to usher in the winter season. Family and MWR activities are holding fun events where goblins, ghouls and other costumed characters get together for some make-believe spooky, but harmless, Halloween fun activities.

REMEMBERING THE FALLEN… ARMY STRONG FESTIVAL 2011 Fort Knox Family and MWR will host a Run for the Fallen on October 15 at 9:00 AM at the Natcher Physical Fitness Center. Run for the Fallen events are held across the nation to honor Active Duty service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation. The run/walk on the 15th of October will serve as an opportunity for Fort Knox community members to honor our fallen Military. Family members of our Fallen Soldiers are also invited to attend and participate in the event and are encouraged to bring pictures and/or memorabilia of their loved ones to display in a remembrance area. "We want the Families of the Fallen to know that the sacrifice their Soldier made will not be forgotten and that this community recognizes the sacrifices they’ve made as well,” said Robyn Mroszczyk, a Financial Counselor with Army Community Service Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) program. The run/walk beings at 9:00 AM at the running track behind Natcher Fitness Center on Gary Owen Regiment Avenue. The 2-mile course is stroller friendly and bicycles are welcome with appropriate safety gear. No pets allowed. The run is open to the public and all ages and abilities may participate. For more information about the Run for the Fallen, please contact Army Community Service (SOS) at (502) 624-1789 or (502) 624-2006. Following the run, the Army Family Strong Festival will run from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Natcher Fitness Center. The Festival is free and open to Military ID card holders. “This is the third year Family and MWR has hosted this free event to show our appreciation of Soldiers and Families,” said Melinda Roberts, Division Chief of Army Community Service. Weather permitting, the parking area adjacent to the fitness center will be filled with inflatables, funnel cakes, hay rides, and carnival rides. Regardless of the weather, inside Natcher Fitness Center there will be more inflatables, crafts and activities for children. Free food, snacks and beverages will include hot dogs, chips, water, juice, and sodas. Come rain or shine! Join Family and MWR on Saturday October 15 for a full day of celebrating our Soldiers and our community. www.KnoxMWR.comŇ2FWREHU Ň
