Fort Knox introduces a free new program for families. BEING A PARENT IS HARD WORK! In the first few years, children learn more and at a faster pace than at any other time in life. You help shape your child’s future through the kinds of experiences you provide. As a military family, your unique experiences bring a whole new challenge and element to parenting. Parents as Teachers understands and wants to help you be your child’s first and most important hero and teacher.

Parents as Teachers provides parent education and family support to families throughout pregnancy until their child turns age three. By understanding what to expect during each stage of development, parents can easily capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child’s development. You will receive personal, monthly home visits consisting of information specific to your child’s development and a fun activity with you and your child. You can also attend exciting parent/ child group events and receive an annual screening of your child’s overall development. Your home visitor will also provide information on any resources you and your family may want to know more about. You and your child deserve the support Parents as Teachers offers. Give your child the best possible start in life because your baby was born to learn!

For more information or to enroll today, call Brenda or Marcia at (502) 624-1041 or visit the CYSS Central Registration office located in Building 1384 (White Hall basement) to fill out an enrollment form. The month of November has been set aside to celebrate our blessings and give thanks for our freedom to enjoy them. It is during this time that we take great pride in honoring the strengths of the Military Family. Today’s Military Families face many unique challenges rarely faced throughout our country’s history. Hundreds of thousands of families have served through multiple deployments in support of operations in the Middle East as well as many other locations around the world. With love and support, Military Families give uniformed service members the strength to serve abroad. Our families serve at the very center of American society. In the spring, summer, and fall it’s easy to enjoy the outdoors. You have nearly limitless options for the warmer weather, including outdoor sports, bike riding, gardening, and other types of outdoor recreation. However, as the weather gets colder as we enter the winter months it can get a bit harder to get yourself off the couch. Along with the general laziness that sometimes comes with the season, the inclement weather can discourage you from venturing outside, which in turn contributes to your overall inactivity. In order to stay active and get out of the house this winter, why not explore all the indoor activities Fort Knox has to offer? Houston Bowling Center With 24 synthetic lanes, brand new automatic scoring, bumper bowling, pro shop, billiards, Wi-Fi, and arcade games, Houston Bowling Center provides indoor fun for the whole family. In addition, The Strike Zone, located inside Houston Bowling Center, is a full service eatery where you can enjoy delicious, hot meals to keep you warm. Anderson Indoor Aquatics Center Swimming in the winter? It’s possible with Anderson’s Olympic-sized heated pool. This 50-meter pool includes a diving board and a 50-foot tube water slide as well as heated showers, hair dryers, and bathing suit dryers. Anderson also has D FDUGLRYDVFXODU ¿WQHVV URRP VWRFNHG ZLWK WUHDGPLOOV VWDWLRQDU\ DQG UHFXPEHQW ELF\FOHV DQ eight-station Universal Weight machine, and several Nautilus machines. hen it comes to winter vacations, you have many options from which to choose. Some love to partake in winter activities like skiing or snowboarding during the winter months, while others like to get away from it all and head off for sunnier climates. No matter what you want to do, there are packages available for all types of winter vacations and shorter getaways. All you have to do is decide where you want to go, and then shop around for the best price. When winter comes, many people get the winter blues, and winter vacations are often a great cure for this. Some people like to take vacations exclusively in the winter months because they know this is when they need it the most. Christmas is a popular choice as some like to visit family and sneak in a vacation all at the same time. This is a great

opportunity to do just that if your job will allow you to take time off during this hectic season. You may find great deals on tropical getaways. For many, winter vacations are when they take the time to visit the warmer parts of the world. They may just take a short trip to Florida or California, or they may go to the Caribbean. When it is cold in the U.S., it is summer in Australia. If you ever wanted to go visit Australia, this may be the perfect time to do so. Australian Christmas is warm, sunny, and usually celebrated with a barbeque. That may be the most memorable of all of your winter vacations if you choose to go. As you can see, there are some wonderful options available for your family to enjoy a winter vacation. Plan early and you can face winter vacation with confidence that you’ll be able to escape to the destination of your choice.

Located inside the Hansen Center, the I.T.R. Office is your destination for discount vacation and travel planning. Vacation packages and attraction tickets are available now. Call (502) 624-5030 for more information.

Growing the earth? Or growing a young mind?

Everyday moments. A chance to nurture your child’s curiosity. Encouraging imagination helps develop a child’s mind. It makes them curious and sparks the development of early problem-solving skills—the building blocks for future scientific and mathematical thinking. Children entering school prepared with these skills have more self-esteem and a better chance of success. That’s why PNC founded Grow Up Great, a 10-year, $100 million program preparing young children for school with tips for parents, grants and sponsorships. Together, we can make sure an entire generation won’t just grow up, but grow up great. To find out more, go to pncgrowupgreat.com or call 1-877-PNC-GROW.

BENEFITS BARRAGE:

Indianapolis Colts vs. Minnesota Vikings

O

n August 14, 2009, FMWR hosted a trip to Indianapolis, Indiana, to see the preseason game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Minnesota Vikings. Eighteen individuals took advantage of this package deal that included transportation to and from Indianapolis, and a ticket to the game. Our objectives for the trip were to show an increased level of morale and help soldiers and families feel an increase in unity by participating in this event. The results of the survey conducted showed that soldiers, retirees, and family members who participated in this program experienced an increase in morale and felt an increase in family unity. Look for another trip sponsored by FMWR. For more information about trips or recreational programs, please call (502) 624-1838.
