Some people get a rush out of tackling a 250 lb football player to the ground, while others prefer skiing 60 mph down a mountain slope. Whatever the case, there’s always a sudden burst of energy that gets exerted when performing such a high-speed, active sport. Adrenaline junkies looking for a fast and skillful sport can find just that at the new paintball facility located at the French Shooting Club. The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation recently introduced paintball to the Fort Knox Community with the intent of reintegrating Soldiers to society after a deployment. As part of the Army high-adventure Warrior Adventure Program, this new facility will allow Soldiers to bring their life-intensity levels back to normal. Paintball is like a game of chess. One has to be able to think quickly and decisively in order to pin their opponent. It is not simply a matter of speed, strength or agility. Earl Higgs, Outdoor Recreation Manager, said that paintball has become increasingly popular in recent years with adults and youth. Whether you’re a retiree in the Army, or a student in High School, players have one thing in common. They all share a common love for adventure. All players must be at least 12 years old, and those between the ages 12 to 15 are required to be accompanied by a parent, guardian or adult instructor. Those ages 16 and 17 are allowed to play while unaccompanied, however, must have a signed Liability Release & Agreement of Rules form signed by their parent or guardian. The new facility will also accommodate military units and groups consisting of six or more players to exercise the use of teamwork, self-confidence and leadership abilities. The facility consists of two speedball fields, both equipped with inflatable and permanent barriers. Paintball enthusiasts who have their own equipment can use the facility at $5 per person for one hour of unreserved field use. Paintball guns, masks, and CO2 tanks are also available for rent to those without their own equipment. For those seeking the adrenaline rush that paint bullets provide, visit the new facility located at the French Shooting Club for some action-filled excitement or call (502) 624-7754. www.KnoxMWR.comŇ1RYHPEHU Ň

It is the time of year where Soldiers, Families, civilians and retirees are taking part in the Army Family Action Plan (AFAP). The program is designed to improve quality-of-life issues across the Army. The AFAP conference is scheduled for three days in the month of November at the Fort Knox Leader’s Club, where at that time, the specific items that were submitted for suggestions will be selected and discussion will begin for possible resolutions. The Army Family Action Plan is a vehicle for providing input from the people of the Army to the Army leadership. It’s a process that lets Soldiers and Families say what policies and programs are working and those that are not — and what they think will fix it. The process alerts commanders and Army leaders to areas of concern that need their attention and gives them the opportunity to quickly put plans into place to work toward resolving the issues. Valid issues are forwarded to specific work groups for discussion and possible resolution. Issues must have a measurable end result and impact the total Army Family or a particular category of the Army Family. Personal issues are not considered valid issues. The AFAP is not a forum to address personal complaints, but rather to identify those issues that concern and impact the total majority of the Army Family. Specifically, how does AFAP work? Installations at local levels hold AFAP forums. Active and Reserve Soldiers, retirees, spouses, DA Civilians, Family Members, and tenant organizations identify issues they believe are important to maintain a good standard of living. Local commanders see to it that the issues are worked toward resolution. About 90% of AFAP issues are retained and worked at a local level, resulting in ongoing community improvements. However, some issues go beyond the local level. These are sent to AC/ASCC/DRU Conference and to HQDA, where delegates from across the Army determine which issues will go into the AFAP. The issues that are selected are worked toward a resolution by Army Staff and DoD agencies. A total of 601 Issues have been entered into AFAP in the 22 year history. AFAP has been very instrumental in assisting with making positive changes in our Fort Knox Community. Here are several concerns that reached a successful resolution.
Service member group life insurance increased from $50,000 to $200,000. Thrift Savings Plans for military was authorized and implemented. A vehicle can be stored at government expense when a Soldier is reassigned to an area where shipment isn’t authorized. Family Separation Allowance was increased from $75 to $100 per month. Programs like Army Family Team Building (AFTB) and Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS) were born.
AFAP is a year round incentive. Issues are continually being monitored and worked toward resolution at local levels. If you have any issues that you wish to submit for AFAP for consideration for the 2011 Conference, (as the deadline for 2010 was before printing of this article), you may contact your local AFAP office, Army Community Services at (502) 624-8391.
