TOYS NEED TO BE SAFE & FUN
December is a time when gifts are given in abundance to celebrate or show gratitude. The safety and age appropriateness of gifts isn’t always uppermost in the gift purchaser’s mind. So in the United States, December is observed as “Safe Toys and Gifts Month” as a means for alerting us to the need to be careful when making our toy and gift choices. Millions of toys are out there, and hundreds of new ones hit the stores each year. Toys are supposed to be fun, but around 15 children under the age of 14 die from a toy-related incident every year. Knowing what to look for can make a huge difference in preventing possible injuries from well-intentioned gifts. This article provides an overview of the things to bear in mind when shopping for toys and gifts this year, and make this holiday season even better. One of the most important but overlooked guidelines is buying age appropriate toys. People are prone to thinking that purchasing toys that are meant for an older age group is fine; as in thinking they’ll “grow into it.” The problem with that thinking is, toys are age graded for safety reasons. When you ignore those safety grades it can be very unsafe for the child. When purchasing a gift or toy for a child, make sure to read the warning and safety precautions accompanying the toy. This gives a good idea of suitability and safety issues for the child in question. Some things you can bear in mind are small pieces, sharp edges, and toxic items. Reading the instructions that accompany any toy will be helpful in picking out a toy. By examining the picture, this can help in deciding the suitability of the toy along with the age grade. Buying durable toys is very important when purchasing a toy or gift, especially with small children durability is essential. Avoid toys that break easily or if do break, they do not break into shards, splinters, sharp pieces or release anything toxic. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) gives an easy acronym to help keep your kids S.A.F.E. (S: Supervision, A: Age Appropriate, F: Free of Inherent Hazards, E: Equipment). Following this acronym will help you buy the right gift in any situation. Go to http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prerel.html for a list of all toys that have been recalled. Avoiding these toys will ensure the safety of the child. Make this holiday a safe and happy one. By following these simple ideas, your kids can get the toys that are both age appropriate and will help them develop educationally. www.KnoxMWR.comŇ'HFHPEHU Ň
LIGHT UP THE HOLIDAY SEASON DECEMBER 1 TREES FOR TROOPS ALSO ARRIVE DECEMBER 1 O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree. The glowing light of a Christmas Tree is a tell tale sign that the Holiday Season is upon us. Fort Knox Family and MWR will be hosting the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Brooks Field Gazebo. The Tree Lighting Ceremony is Thursday, December 1 at 5:30 PM. The entire community is invited to participate in the celebration. The Ceremony will begin with traditional Christmas music from the 113th Army Band, followed by an introduction of Fort Knox command who will then provide opening remarks. The Girl Scouts and the Fort Knox High School choir will be performing at 6:00 PM. “Around the Town Carriage” will bring Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus to join the celebration. For Children, there will be cookies and candy canes available. This celebration is sponsored by Sprint and a local VFW Chapter. “This is a fun event for Family and MWR staff, as we get to be a witness to all the smiling, happy children, as we provide a little holiday cheer. Family and MWR takes pride in being able to offer a small piece of the holiday tradition to our community. We hope that everyone will join us in December for the fun,” said Dave Laurence, Senior Programmer. Immediately following the tree lighting, Active Duty Soldiers and their Families can visit the Trees for Troops site near Waybur Theater to pick up a free live Christmas tree. Six hundred Christmas trees will be donated by the Christmas Spirit Foundation and delivered to Fort Knox by FedEx. The Trees for Troops lot near Waybur Theater will be open until 9:00 PM on December 1. Volunteers from Army Community Service will be at the lot helping to select a tree, and giving trees a fresh cut. Trees will be available at the same location on Friday December 2 until no trees are left. ACS has been a caretaker for the Trees for Troops Program at Fort Knox since 2007, and over 2100 Christmas trees have received a home with a military family. Christmas tree farmers from more than 750 farms and a number of retailers donated these trees to Trees for Troops. FedEx then drives an estimated 51,000 miles to deliver to 40 U.S. bases and 17 countries. Since 2005, the Christmas Spirit Foundation has brought more than 67,000 trees to families. FedEx has driven more than 221,618 miles since 2005, making sure each Military Family received a live Christmas tree. Take the opportunity to visit www.treesfortroops. org and leave a message for troops or make a donation online to the Christmas Spirit Foundation. For more information about the Tree Lighting Ceremony call (502) 624-4347. For more information about Trees for Troops, contact ACS at (502) 624-6173.

FAMILY AND MWR HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2011 Fort Knox Family and MWR welcomed the transformation BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) brought to Fort Knox. Family and MWR took great pride in providing quality services to a whole new group of customers, all the while, maintaining its current base of loyal customers. During the last year, there were many exciting events and activities that took place within Family and MWR in 2011. Below are the main highlights of the events and activities.
NEW CONSTRUCTION As you drove around post, you were witness to all the construction that took place with Family and MWR facilities. Family and MWR is proud to report the completion of many of those projects this year. Houston Bowling Center received 8 additional lanes and a new party room. Rocker II has a new kitchen offering new menu items, stop by at lunch time and check it out. Gammon Fitness Center added a new Fuel Bar and onsite childcare facility. The new School Age Center opened in September 2011.
EASTMAN PARK CONCERT SERIES This past summer, Family and MWR offered a free summer concert series at Eastman Park. The series featured Darryl Worley, Storefront Congregation, Dawn Robinson, Nikko Smith, and Nick Howard. The Sister Hazel performance was rained out. Several thousand Fort Knox community members enjoyed this wonderful series.
MEMORIALIZATION OF YOUTH SPORTS COMPLEX On September 17, 2011, Family and MWR memoralized the Youth Sports Complex in honor of Mrs. Beth Caruso who lost her life to cancer in April 2010. Beth was an employee with Family and MWR for over 26 years. She taught everyone about love and was truly loved by all the people whose lives she touched, but above all she showed sincere love and passion for all those many children and youth that crossed her path. Family and MWR is very proud to name this facility in her honor. We encourage the community to visit the facility and participate in the many sporting events. ŇOpportunity Knox

HANSEN GALLERY Frame & Engrave Your Holiday Gifts Anyone who has attempted to frame a family heirloom themselves knows it can be difficult. A couple of failed attempts usually results in heading to the local frame shop to pay high prices – up to $400 in some cases – for wood, glass and matting. But those who have a Family member, Active Duty military, Retiree, or a fe ederal employee common access card, have another option on Fort Knox. The Hansen Gallery, that was completely modernized a few e years ago, is no now considered a full-service Gallery. Hansen Gallery offe ers do-it-yourself framing classes from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the first Monday of every month. As the classes are limited to 4 people, early sign-up is suggested. Participants bring a 5x7 picture and Hansen provides molding, a mat and supplies. The cost for the class is only $25. “With our $25,000 cutting system, two engravers, and an unlimited product line, we can turn out about anything the customer requests. Our staff is fully dedicated to customer satisfaction and production. We are here to make our customer ’s vision a reality. With our two engravers, we are able to turn out engravings on glassware, metal plaques and wood that are presented at military functions, retirement parties, dine-ins and more. Our turnover is usually two or three days, and we only charge $2 per side, where off post businesses charge per lett letter,” said Da Dawn Sellers, Manager of the the Hansen Hansen GGallery. Michael Gillespie, a contract worker on Fort Knox and an avid photographer, took the do-it-yourself framing class early last year. “ The money I saved in framing my photos is unreal. Hansen orders my supplies that alone are much cheaper than buying them at an off post craftts store. When the order comes in, I do my own framing at the Gallery where the staff is always available to give me pointers on how to do an even better job. Saving at least 50% by doing m y own framing is a g reat bonus fr om taking the class,” Gillespie said . “Recently, our team felt especially privileged in preparing a large number of awards that included plaques and engraved wooden boxes ffor or the 54 Medal of Honor Warriors at the Medal of Honor Convention that took place at the KFC YUM Center in Louisville, and for the special ceremony at Churchill Downs. I am very proud of our team's eff ffor orts in c ompleting this pr oject so quick ly, in the shor short time allotted for this job,” said id Sellers. The Hansen Gallery also participates every year in the Army-wide Arts and Craffts and Photo Contests, and some of the t op winners ha ve been en trants from Fort K nox. For more information about the Hansen G allery, please call (502) 624-4725.
