all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine’s Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the LQMXVWLFH RI WKH GHFUHH GH¿HG &ODXGLXV DQG continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

Exceptional Service Exceptional Family Member Program
Over 100,000 military families have members with special needs. These include spouses, children, or dependent parents who require special medical or educational services. These family members have a diagnosed physical, intellectual, or emotional condition. The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) serves these families in several ways. The Exceptional Family Member Program is an enrollment program that works with other military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support, housing, educational, medical, and personnel services to Families with special needs. Soldiers on active duty enroll in the program when they have a Family member with a physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual disorder requiring specialized services so their needs can be considered in the military personnel assignment process. With help from the EFMP, families are able to obtain the housing needed to meet their special requirements. The Fort Knox community is ready to address any issues or challenges an EFM family may face. In addition, by using the EFMP, moving can go much smoother in the medical and therapy transition as well. The Respite Care Program is a component of EFMP that provides a temporary rest period for Family members responsible for regular care of persons with disabilities. Care may be provided in the EFMP respite care user’s home and other settings such as special needs camps and enrichment programs. Respite care is important because it decreases Family stress, increases Family stability and reduces costly out-of-home placements, thereby contributing to Soldier readiness. It is important to note that enrollment in EFMP does not adversely affect selection for promotion, schools, or assignment. Information concerning enrollment in EFMP or any of the data used in the program is not made available to selection boards. 7R ¿QG RXW PRUH DERXW WKH )RUW .QR[ ([FHSWLRQDO )DPLO\ 0HPEHUV 3URJUDP call ACS at (502) 624-8391/6291 or visit www.KnoxMWR.com.

The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced to Medieval Europe, though we have no written record of how that really transformed into the current Mardi Gras of today. But the origins of the Mardi Gras we celebrate today — with kings, Mardi Gras colors, and brass bands — are traced to New Orleans. Although we can trace its history to the Romans, a French-Canadian explorer, Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville, landed on a plot of ground 60 miles directly south of New Orleans in 1699 and called it “Pointe due Mardi Gras. He also established “Fort Louis de la Louisiane (which is now Mobile) in 1702. In 1703, the tiny settlement of Fort Louis de la Mobile celebrated the very first Mardi Gras. New Orleans was established in 1718 by Jean-Baptise Le Moyne. By the 1730s, Mardi Gras was celebrated openly in New Orleans, but not in parade form. In the early 1740s, Louisiana’s Governor The Marquis de Vaudreuil established elegant society balls — the model for the New Orleans Mardi Gras balls of today. The earliest reference to Mardi Gras “Carnival appears in a 1781 report to the Spanish colonial governing body.
That year, the Perseverance Benevolent & Mutual Aid Association was the first of hundreds of clubs and carnival organizations formed in New Orleans. By the late 1830s, New Orleans held street processions of maskers with carriages and horseback to celebrate Mardi Gras. Newspapers began to announce Mardi Gras events in advance. In 1873, the first floats were constructed entirely in New Orleans instead of France. In 1875, Governor Warmoth of Louisiana signed the “Mardi Gras Actâ€? making it a legal holiday in Louisiana, which is still is. Celebrate Mardi Gras at the Rocker II on February 12 from 8 PM to 4 AM. Cover charge is $5.00 for Military and $8.00 for all others. The club will be decorated in the traditional Mardi Gras colors. What’s Cupid got to do with it? According to Roman mythology, Cupid was the son of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Cupid was known to cause people to fall in love by shooting when with his magical arrows. But Cupid didn’t just cause others to fall in love; he himself fell in love.

As legend has it, Cupid fell in love with a mortal maiden named Psyche. Cupid married Psyche, but Venus, jealous of Psyche’s beauty, forbade her daughter-in-law to look at Cupid. Psyche, of course, couldn’t resist temptation and sneaked a peek at her handsome husband. As punishment, Venus demanded that she perform three hard tasks, the last of which caused Psyche’s death. Cupid brought Psyche back to life and the gods, moved by their love, granted Psyche immortality. Cupid thus represents the heart and Psyche the (struggle of the) human soul.
