Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide by those of Irish descent and increasingly by people of other ethnicities as well, notably in Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and North America. Celebrations are generally themed around all things Irish and, by association, the color green. Both Christians and nonChristians celebrate the secular version of the holiday by wearing green, eating Irish food and/or green foods, imbibing Irish drink (such as Irish stout, especially Guinness, Irish Whiskey, or Irish Cream), and attending parades, which have a particularly long history in the United States and in Canada. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century. Saint Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the preChristian Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. The phrase “the wearing of the green,â€? meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from the song of the same name. The Irish Society of Boston organized what was the first Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in the colonies on March 17, 1737. The first celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day in New York City was held at the Crown and Thistle Tavern in 1766. The parades were held as political and social statements because the Irish immigrants were being treated unfairly. In 1780, General George Washington, who commanded soldiers of Irish descent in the Continental Army, allowed his troops a holiday on March 17 “as an act of solidarity with the Irish in their fight for independence.â€? Today, Saint Patrick’s Day is widely celebrated in America by Irish and non-Irish alike. Many people, regardless of ethnic background, wear green-colored clothing and items. Traditionally, those who are caught not wearing green are pinched, usually affectionately. Seattle and other cities paint the traffic stripe of their parade routes green. Chicago dyes its river green and has done so since 1961 when sewer workers used green dye to check for sewer discharges and got the idea to turn the river green for St. Patrick’s Day. Indianapolis also dyes its main canal green, while Savannah dyes its downtown city fountains green. The New York parade has become the largest Saint Patrick’s Day parade in the world. In a typical year, 150,000 marchers participate in it, including bands, firefighters, military and police groups, county associations, emigrant societies, and social and cultural clubs, and two million spectators line the streets. The parade marches up 5th Avenue in Manhattan and is always led by the U.S. 69th Infantry Regiment. Traditionally, the Commissioner of the parade asks the Commanding Officer if the 69th is ready. To which the response is, “The 69th is always ready.â€? Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day this year at the Rocker’s ShamROCK Shackfest on March 17 at 7:00 PM. This event is open to the public and there is no cover charge at the door. Party in the green foam room and participate in a variety of Irish-themed games and challenges for a chance to win prizes. Shuttle service to the barracks will be provided throughout the night. For more details call (502) 942-0409. ŇOpportunity Knox ŇOpportunity

THE CURE FOR
“I’m BOR-R-RWhat do teenagers like to do? According to ANSWERS.COM, teenagers enjoy hanging out, playing video games, eating, playing sports, going to sporting events, watching TV, and participating in high-adventure activities. Just as important, they like to customize their experiences, to express themselves, and to just have carefree, spontaneous fun. Devers Middle School and Teen Center is the place for teens to participate in many of the activities they love doing, such as hanging out in the game room, feeding themselves in the snack bar, hooping it up in the gymnasium, designing that next great creation in the computer lab, getting that muchneeded assistance in the homework center, or expressing themselves in the Xzbit, a room equipped with all the latest dance tunes. There is a kaleidoscope of activities at Devers that range from learning to bake your favorite dish to experiencing the high-adventure thrills of busting through a class five rapid on a white water rafting excursion. Ongoing fun and educational activities include after school programs, late night Monthly Movie Madness at Olive Theater, monthly theme dances, and basketball competitions. A Middle School lock-in is planned for March where the youth will use their problem-solving skills to unravel a murder mystery in addition to continuous challenging activities and food throughout the night. Spring break offers a great chance for young people to participate in all sorts of character-building activities. A spring break kick-off Splash Bash at Anderson Indoor Pool will provide Fort Knox youth with food, dancing, and various water games and competitions. Youth will also have the opportunity to accompany the staff on a variety of trips this spring. Off-post treks are planned to an Indiana Pacers professional basketball game, Schimiff’s Candy Factory, the Toyota Manufacturing Plant, and Georgetown College in Kentucky for a campus tour. As the coolness of winter departs, activities include a hiking and canoeing trip at Mammoth Cave and our ‘School’s Out For The Summer’ Splash Bashes in June and July.

5 5 5 5 5 (' ´ During the summer months for those sophisticated sports and adventure enthusiasts, an overnight white water rafting trip on the New River in West Virginia is planned along with trips to various theme parks including King’s Island, Holiday World, and Kentucky Kingdom. Also planned is a trip to the Cincinnati Bengals football training camp. In addition, each week during the summer break, the Devers Middle School and Teen program is offering week-long camps that focus on subjects including technology, adventure, the environment, career exploration, sports, baby sitting, leadership, DJ, and photography. To take part in any or all of these fun, challenging, and character-developing adventures designed just for middle school and teens, look for published times, dates, and locations of these and many more activities in the CYSS section of this magazine (located on page 31), The Turret, your school’s bulletin boards, FMWR What’s Happening email-blast, www.KnoxMWR.com, and the monthly Middle School Teen Happenings. INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES:
PROVEN TO HELP YOU SUCCEED!
Preparing for an interview is always among the most nerve-racking of tasks. Your stress level, however, will drop when you know you are ready for the interview. The interview is actually where you get to sell your qualifications to the employer. So before you head in for your first interview, let’s look at some ways that you can heighten your chances of turning it into your first job invitation. Before the Interview: Make Your Preparations You’ll want to anticipate the questions your interviewer will ask - most of which you can locate from career books and websites, and by researching the company and specific position. In addition to researching and rehearsing, preparing for the interview includes choosing the right outfit. This may seem unnecessary, but under-dressing for an interview can undoubtedly be disastrous. So make sure you have clean and pressed business attire to wear. This way, you can make the right first impression when you walk through the door. During the Interview: Be a Go-Getter There is nothing more attractive in the work world than an enthusiastic candidate. When an employer is sorting through candidates, they are looking for a person who is just as excited about working for their company as its founders. Confidence is the key. During the interview, fully express the ways you can enhance the company with your education and background, and don’t forget to always maintain eye contact. After the Interview: Don’t Forget to Say Thank You You may want to sit back and wait to hear from the employer, but actually it is better to send a thank you letter (or email) the next day. This way, you can show your appreciation for the interview and reiterate why you’re a good choice for the position, thus increasing your chances of securing the position. By taking the steps necessary to strengthen your interviewing skills, you can turn yourself into a strong candidate. So do you research, maintain confidence, and don’t forget to say thank you. With hard work and determination, your first interview may just result in your first job. The ACS Employment Readiness Program provides employment information and other supportive services primarily to family members who are relocating as a result of a military or civilian sponsor’s permanent change of station. Other categories of personnel who are eligible for services are non-transitioning military personnel, retirees, and their spouses. For more information, call (502) 624-8357 or (502) 624-8855. Legend of the Leprechauns Just what does a mythical leprechaun look like and why are they so special? Traditionaly, a leprechaun looks like a little old man and dresses like a shoemaker with a cocked hat and leather apron. A Leprechaun’s personality is described as aloof and unfriendly. They live alone and pass the time by mending the shoes of Irish fairies. The legend is that the fairies pay the leprechauns for their work with golden coins, which the “little people” collect in large pots - the famous “pots of gold” often associated with leprechauns.

Lucky Shamrocks The shamrock as symbol of Ireland and Saint Patrick’s Day is partly due to the natural abundance of clover plants in the country, but largely due to its strong association with Christianity. According to Robert Mahony, Professor of English and member of the Center for Irish Studies at Catholic University, legend has it that Saint Patrick used the shamrock to visually illustrate the concept of the Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) when trying to convert polytheistic pagans to Christianity.

A Razzle Dazzle Christmas
O
n December 18, 2009, Fort Knox FMWR hosted “A Razzle Dazzle Christmas” at the Patton Museum. More than 120 guest came out to see the WWII Christmas style song and dance performance. After the performance, the guests stayed to mingle with the performers and WWII characters dressed in period clothing, while enjoying dessert, champagne, and hot chocolate. Our objective for this event was to bring the community together and to help put people in the holiday spirit.
