For those individuals who are not from Germany and are not familiar with the event “Fasching” or ever experienced the fun and entertainment that it can provide, now is your chance. On March 6th the Leaders Club will be hosting the first “Fasching” celebration for families and children starting at 2:00 PM. Fasching is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus and costumed public street party. Dressing up as clowns or harlequins is a common characteristic of a Fasching celebration. Today, the costumes range from the traditional masks to contemporary pop culture references. A particular favorite for young girls in Germany is Pippi Longstocking, or as she's known in Germany, Pippi Langstrumpf. The carnival begins each year on November 11 at 11:11 AM, and finishes on Ash Wednesday. Fasching is mostly celebrated amongst the adult crowd during the evening, but parades with floats occur during the day for the whole family. Of course Fasching is also very popular with the children because they like to act out and dress up as their favorite cartoon character or super hero. With that in mind, the Leaders Club will celebrate a traditional fest for Families and children on Sunday, March 6 inside the Candlelight Room. It is open to the public and FREE. All Snacks and drinks will be provided. Prizes can be won throughout the afternoon by participating in traditional German children games, like “Sackhuepfen” (Potato Sack race), “Eierlauf” (Egg Balance game) and many more. DJ Jose will be the live entertainment for the afternoon and has a few surprises planned as well. Armed Forces Bank and Snappy Tomato will also be present to pass out great goodies for the children. You might even catch a glimpse of Snappy Tomato himself, who, so we hear, is a great dancer. So dust off your Halloween costumes, come dressed for the occasion, and have some fun at the Family Fasching’s party: Leaders Club style. For more information about this event, please call (502) 942-8332.

The Combined Federal Campaign at Work Ashley Furniture supports Family and MWR and Army Community Service through CFC
Jordan Doepke; Ashley Furniture, Susan Frazier; Family and MWR Commercial Concerns, Melinda Roberts; Director ACS, and Randy Moore; Director Fort Knox DFMWR
Established by the Federal Government in 1961, the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is the only authorized charitable fundraising campaign for federal employees, both civilian and military. Conducted by the Federal Government under the authority of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the CFC operates in more than 370 localities throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and in overseas military bases. CFC continues to be the largest and most successful workplace fundraising model in the world, raising $241 million in 2001 for thousands of local, national, and international charitable agencies. Donations through the CFC can be designated to charitable agencies that provide meals for hungry children, relief for Families in counseling, further work on cures for diseases, comfort for the dying, access to water in the Third World, environmental protection, and better lives and renewed hope for millions of people in our global community. CFC offers Federal employees a way to easily and conveniently make a contribution to the good of society as a whole based upon their values. Louisville-based KHF Holdings LLC – A locally owned and operated parent company of four Ashley Furniture HomeStores in Louisville and Indianapolis employs nearly 150 local residents. KHF’s sponsorship of the military and its affiliated programs is “a large part of the everyday focus at Ashley Furniture HomeStore,”
ŇOpportunityKnox Knox ŇOpportunity
according to Jordan Doepke, Ashley Corporate Sales. Doepke also continues to say, “We employ former Members of service and Veterans alike, and the ability to give back is truly a blessing.” In 2010, KHF ran a Veteran’s Day promotion and donated a percentage of sales to local branches of the Family and MWR and Army Community Services. Throughout the course of the promotion, KHF Holdings was able to donate nearly $20,000 in support of the United States Military and its services. These funds will go directly to Army Community Service to assist those Soldiers and Family members that are in crisis or stressful situations. Melinda Roberts, Director of Army Community Service (ACS) states “these funds will be of great assistance to our Survivor Outreach Services, Mobilization and Deployment, Financial Readiness, and other ACS programs. We will continue to provide needed services and programs for Soldiers and Families because of Ashley’s generous donation. We are grateful for their support and for their willingness to help our Soldiers and Families”. Ashley Furniture has a true passion for providing assistance to the Soldier and Family Community within Fort Knox. They are going to continue this program through this year with a special “Donation Discount” in hopes to give back to any Military Family, employee of any government service on or off base. For more information, you can contact Jordan Doepke with Ashley Furniture at jdoepke@ashleyky.com or (513) 267-9077. The $675,000 raised, including the generous donation to the Combined Federal Campaign by Ashley and all the Federal employees at Fort Knox, means that many will be able to receive much needed assistance here at Fort Knox, throughout the nation, and the world. The 2010 CFC staff sends its sincerest thanks. The Combined Federal Campaign will begin accepting donations again in September 2011. For further information about giving through the Combined Federal Campaign, please contact Ms. Susan Frazier at (502) 624-4737.

The distance between Fort Knox to Kabul, Afghanistan is 7,612 miles. A person can walk 24 hours a day, seven days a week and barely make it there in 85 days. The walk may seem impossible, but, Family and MWR is challenging the Community to go the distance in support of our deployed Soldiers and their Families. Starting

exactly one year to complete the 7,612 miles. Participants can work together as a group of up to 20 friends, or trek the distance individually. The key is to keep moving all year long and stay active. Activities such as walking, running, biking, swimming, aerobics classes and dancing, can all count towards a person’s total miles. The Walk to Afghanistan program encourages the Community to stay motivated while Soldiers are overseas. The program was designed to build morale and promote physical fitness while strengthening positive relationships between Families, friends, and Soldiers and to display an overall support for our deployed forces. The 7,612 miles to Afghanistan is a long journey, but it’s important to remember that every step made, and mile logged is in honor of the deployed Soldiers and their commitment to duty and country. This program is open to those wishing to show support and willing to overcome the physical and mental challenges. The program is
physical,
emotional,
social,
intellectual
and environmental. During the deployment, participants are challenged to not only walk to Afghanistan, but focus on individual wellness, while finding strength and empowerment. Prizes and certificates will be awarded at different mileage milestones throughout the program. For more information about the Walk to Afghanistan program call, (502) 624-3774. It’s not too late to sign up. Visit Gammon PFC located on 850 Radio St., Fort Knox to register and push yourself to get moving this year! www.KnoxMWR.comŇ0DUFK Ň
GREAT BARGAINS!
AT THE FORT KNOX THRIFT SHOP The Country Store – Thrift Shop located in the Fort Knox Hansen Community Center at 1053 Spearhead Division Avenue offers something for everyone. Army Families transitioning to post from another assignment needing household goods can find great bargains here. The variety of items at the Shop is almost endless. If you are looking for baby items, shoes, clothes, a pair of binoculars, cookware, dishes, lamps or furniture, the Thrift Shop offers a wide selection of each. Gaby Ruiz, who manages the Thrift Shop, said that the shop has been operated by Fort Knox’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation for more than 20 years. Prior to that time, it was operated by the Officers Wives Club. “If incoming Soldiers don’t have household items, they can come here to find some gently worn basics,” she explained, “and when they depart, they can bring items for consignment and get some money back." Selling also help to lighten the shipping load, and Ruiz said people can think of the store as an extended yard sale. The store covers about 3000 square feet of floor space that includes a consignment area and a loading dock. One room in the store is devoted to curtains and window dressings, another for clothing that includes purses, some formal wear, a section for books, space for children’s clothes, toys, games, sports equipment, pet carriers and kitchen aids. There are also two rooms devoted to furniture, lamps and pictures. Generally, Ruiz said, "the things ŇOpportunity Knox
that sell best are furniture, baby items, and knickknacks". She is grateful for the volunteers who help with accepting, pricing and displaying consignments. "We always welcome more people who want to dedicate volunteer time to the shop," she said. Judy Anderson, a nurse at Ireland Army Hospital said she visits the shop almost every Wednesday bringing in consignments and often leaving with special bargains. She sees many items brought in for consignment that are new, or barely used. Judy claims, "It's fun to shop at the store and you never know what great bargains are waiting to be discovered". The Thrift Store operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM and Wednesday from 9:00 AM until 6:30 PM. Consignments are accepted Wednesday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Thursday and Friday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and one the first Saturday of every month from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. No computers or computer related items or automotive items will be accepted, and seasonal items may only be consigned at certain times of the year. All proceeds that the Thrift Store receives from the sale of consignments are used to present programs and activities designed to enhance the quality of life for Soldiers and their Families.
