In 1996, the Taco Bell Corporation announced that it had bought the Liberty Bell and was renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. Hundreds of outraged citizens called the National Historic Park in Philadelphia where the bell was housed to express their anger. Taco Bell revealed, a few hours later, that it was all an April Fool’s joke.

What do you get when combine Elmo, Cookie Monster, Grover, and others for live performances at military bases in Fort Knox? The answer is Sesame Street Live, a traveling show currently hitting the military circuit to provide its TLC (Talk, Listen, Connect) initiative to children. Military families in attendance will see a live character performance and receive giveaways and outreach materials. Per the USO website, the Sesame Workshop’s Talk, Listen, Connect program, a military outreach initiative launched in 2006, the tour provides support and offers resources for military families with young children experiencing the effects of deployment, multiple deployments, and/or a parent’s return home changed due to a combat-related injury. Although many shows are performed for the military community, Sesame Street Live is special because it caters mainly to children. “The idea is to help parents and kids have a conversation about deployments and changes in their lives. It is a really exciting show, but there is also a message behind that,” said Lonnie Cooper, USO tour manager. “Elmo makes the connection with children instantly.” “When you see them the children understand what Elmo is talking about, when he talks about missing his mommy or his daddy, and when you see how much it means to those kids, it is unlike anything I’ve ever done before in my entire life, it’s really an extraordinary experience to be a part of,” said Mr. Cooper. [Excerpts from article Written by Airman 1st Class Katrina Menchaca 374th Airlift Wing Public Affairs.] The familiar characters are slated to visit Fort Knox on April 17 and 18 at Natcher Physical Fitness Center. Show times are April 17 , 10 AM and 2 PM and April 18 at 2 PM. The FKSCC also provides merit-based scholarships to graduating high school seniors, as well as a continuing education scholarship. Last year they gave $11,000 to help students continue their academic goals. The FKSCC is able to generously donate funds to the community because of the continued success of their many fundraisers throughout the year. Events like the Holiday Bazaar and Wreath and Tree Auction provide the club’s members and the community with a chance to get out and give back. Gold Rush, the club’s largest event of the year, is coming up this month.

There is a proverb that reads, “With my resources, And your resources, Everyone will benefit.” This statement rings true to one organization in particular. Most of you may have heard of The Fort Knox Spouses and Community Club or have been to one of their events, but one question still remains, “What exactly does the FKSCC do?” The FKSCC is a non-profit organization made up of men and women from the Fort Knox and surrounding communities. Members of the FKSCC come from many different walks of life and bring their diverse talents and interests together to serve their community. Each year, The Fort Knox Spouses and Community Club provides grants to support local and national organizations and charities through the club’s Community Grants program. During the 2008-2009 year, they gave more than $23,000 in grants to organizations like ACS Exceptional Family Member Program, American Red Cross Helping Hands, Hooray for Heroes, and many of the communities’ high school booster clubs.

Gold Rush is a Western-themed evening filled with gaming, live and silent auctions, and tons of opportunities to win prizes. There is music, food, suds, and unforgettable performances by the Saloon Girls. The event is open to the public and patrons are encouraged to dress for the Wild West. This year’s Gold Rush will be held on April 17, from 6:30-11:00 PM, at the Fort Knox Leaders Club. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. They host monthly luncheon and dinner programs, special activities, and general membership meetings. Early Years are Learning Years Encouraging Health and Fitness April is the Month of the Military Child. Since it began in 1986, the Department of Defense has teamed with various internal, commercial, and private organizations to recognize the sacrifices and applaud the courage of military children. The Army must build trust and confidence among Soldiers, Families, and military children while recognizing the commitment and increasing sacrifices Army Families make every day. More than 1.7 million American children under the age of 18 have at least one parent serving in the military. Many exciting activities and events will take place on U.S. Army installations world-wide honoring military children during the month of April. The Army Family Covenant (AFC) helps to support many of these activities offered to Families. Month of the Military Child events always stress the importance of providing children with quality services and support to help them succeed in their mobile military lifestyle. It is important to recognize military children and the role they play as part of the Army Family in support of our Soldiers, especially as Army Families experience more separations due to increased Soldier deployments. Fort Knox Child, Youth & School (CYS) Services celebrates Month of the Military Child with the theme “Early Years Are Learning Years — Encouraging Health and Fitness.� The focus is on recognizing our children as one of our most important resources and acknowledging the importance of their health and fitness. It is a time to focus on children and recognize their needs through activities that involve parents and provide awareness to the community. Operation Military Kids (OMK), which is the U.S. Army’s collaborative effort with communities to support children and youth impacted by deployment, will be a part of the Month of the Military Child activities. They provide youth program opportunities for school age, middle school, and high school youth, and connect them to support resources where they live. The Origins of April Fool’s Day The history of April Fool’s Day or All Fool’s Day is uncertain, but the current thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year’s Day was moved from April 1 to January 1. Communication traveled slowly in those days and some people were only informed of the change several years later.
