FRENCH SHOOTING CLUB PAINTBALL “With gas prices climbing higher and higher, many people are looking for things to do closer to home,” said Earl Higgs, manager of the French Shooting Club. “Our Club offers a great opportunity to acquire a new skill, take part in open tournaments, league and specials shoots, or improve shooting skills. All skill levels are welcome to come and try out, or participate in a variety of sport shooting activities we offer at the facility.” The French Shooting Club also offers a high energy competitive and fun experience with its recently added paintball course that features two speedball fields. This 'cat and mouse' activity is lots of fun and great exercise. All paintball equipment is offered for rent, or players may bring their own gun if it does not exceed a velocity of 285fps. Also offered are paintball packages and group packages. Reservations are encouraged for groups of six or more. Paintball course players between the age of twelve and fifteen must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or by an adult instructor leading a youth group. Players age sixteen and seventeen can play alone, but must have a Liability Release & Agreement of Rules, signed by their parent or guardian. To reserve time on the paintball course, please call (502) 624-7754. The French Shooting Club is open to the general public. However, anyone who wants to bring their weapon on Fort Knox to use at the Club must either have a valid Military ID card or a Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation ID card. ID cards are free of charge and can be obtained at the French Shooting Club. Those who are under the age of eighteen must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian to use the French Shooting Club. The Club has a Skeet & Trap Range with four lighted fields, a 5-Stand Sporting Clay lighted field, a Rifle & Pistol Range, an Archery Range with 3-D targets, and a Club House Store offering ammunition, rental shotguns and more. Club Membership is available and allows for special discounts on shooting. Classes on CCDW, basic pistol, skeet and trap orientation are also scheduled. The Club House may be rented for special occasions and group functions. BOSS LEARNS THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE “Serving our country in the United States Armed Forces is our first priority, and the next best service we can give to the people that support us is Community Service,â€? said Staff Sergeant Annette Bailey, the new President for Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS). “I have always been involved in Community Service, and volunteering my time often results in payback of great personal satisfaction in having shared a few hours with my fellow human beings. So, rather than starting out planning recreational activities for our Soldiers in March, I wanted to involve them in doing something special for the people in our Community. I thought they may appreciate spending a few hours with retirees, quite a few of them are former Military service members. Providing companionship, engaging in conversations, sharing experiences, playing board games or cards, or visiting and lending a helping hand at an institution where the less fortunate sometimes have to seek assistance or shelter,â€? said Bailey. Plans were made to visit The Allegro, a senior lifestyle community in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and the Wayside Christian Mission in Louisville, Kentucky. On March 10 and March 24, Bailey and her volunteers visited at Allegro where they were greeted by several residents who told them how pleased they were for the company of the young Soldiers from Fort Knox. Groups formed, playing bingo and cards, and others exchanged stories and anecdotes about their lives. Of particular ŇOpportunity Knox

interest to some of the volunteers was Bobby Bailey, a retired Army Master Sergeant who told them that he was a survivor of the infamous attack of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, by the Japanese at 8 AM on Sunday, December 7, 1941. His listeners were spellbound as he related that on that Sunday, he and his buddies stood in front of a mess hall overlooking the harbor, when out of the sky, at tree-top level, many planes flew over Pearl Harbor. Bailey thought “what is the Navy doing practicing on a Sunday,� until he saw the markings of “the rising sun� on the wings, indicating the planes were Japanese. He said “all hell broke loose� when one of the planes dropped a huge “tornado torpedo bomb� on Pearl Harbors’ consolidated mess hall, followed by about 40 minutes of continued strafing by fighter planes, and arial torpedo bombings of the Pacific Fleet at anchor. Bobby Bailey said that he and his buddies just stood there spellbound and watched the carnage as there was nothing they could do. Later the volunteers pondered that Pearl Harbor seemed to have happened a lifetime ago, before they were born. They never realized how real it became until a survivor told the story of how suddenly 2,335 service men were killed and 1,178 wounded in the span of only 40 minutes. One day after Pearl Harbor, the U.S. declared war on Japan, and on December 11, 1941, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. “On our visit to Allegro our BOSS volunteers met

another interesting resident who was a member of what is widely known collectively as “Rosie the Riveter,” another “relic” of World War II, so to speak,” said SSG Bailey. They met Ms. Hope Midkiff Wright, who told them that when many of the men left work from the factories to join the war effort, more than 6 million women took their place. Some worked in factories producing airplanes, tanks, ships ammunition, and other items the troops needed overseas. Their slogan was “We Can Do It.” In 1944, Ms. Wright left home to work in a sheet metal shop in Ohio as part of the “Rosie The Riveter” group. They made parts for airplanes that had been “shot-up” in combat over Europe. She still belongs to the “American Rosie the Riveter Association.” In May 1944, Ms. Wright signed up for the duration of the war in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). Her assignment was Tool Crib Operator. She left the Army in 1945 at the rank of Corporal. With a chuckle, she told the visitors that she outranked her husband who was only a Private. The volunteers said the hours of companionship spent with the older citizens at Allegro were educational, inspirational and provided much insight into what life’s rewards can be for those who are willing to work hard to reach their goals. In spending time with several “older generation Soldiers” the volunteers felt proud to be a part of the “Band of Brothers” that has been serving our country in every generation throughout history. On March 18, BOSS volunteers visited the Wayside Christian Mission Hotel in Louisville which is owned by a not-for-profit religious and charitable organization that offers many successful programs designed to help homeless, formerly homeless, and indigent people get back on their feet. It also provides on-the-job training, college and career programs, assistance with chronic life-issues, recovery programs and more. As help was needed in the preparation of the next meal, BOSS volunteers assisted with cooking and serving more than 500 people. More sign-ups for volunteer service are appreciated and volunteer hours will be given to all participants. For Military Members the hours can go toward receiving the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM).
