The Mon La Moon Project is a public building which contains 2 programs: restaurant and spa. Situated in Bang Phli district, it is located nearby the iconic shopping mall, Mega Bang Na. With an international school located closely, this project visions an interwoven public space for leisure and family activities with a dedicated pocket public park.

Aiming to create a fluid connection between each space for public engagement while retaining maximum privacy for specific functions, the design introduces lying-across circles that create positive and negative space. The positive space inside each circle contains a private spa room, pocket garden and dining area while the negative space outside the circles becomes main circulation and interconnected public area. The fluidity of circular walls fuses interior and exterior space together. The design results in a variety of spatial sequences filled with natural light and internal courtyard that offers new experiences to customers

Programs are arranged while leaving space for pocket park and car park.

Each program is modified into a circle creating an enclosed private space.

There is a cafe on the front which functions as a welcoming space. The restaurant is located next to the public park. The natural light is controlled as the spatial sequence leads to the spa on the right, which requires privacy and calm atmosphere. Both programs are connected by the central courtyard which is charaterized by the perforated circular brick facade. These circular bricks create ventilation and offer a glimpse of the courtyard as viewed from the exterior.

A negative space between each circle becomes connected public area.

More circles are stacked to create connective spatial experience.

Since its founding in 1955, Ying Charoen Market has developed to be the most important fresh market in Saphan Mai district. Our client envisions a Ying Charoen Masterplan which is consisted of a market hall and a community mall. The site is surrounded by low-rise neighborhoods with a Skytrain (BTS) at the front. There is a public canal that cuts through the middle, creating areas for 2 buildings. The project aims to improve the quality of public space and rethinks the market design with a reinterpretation of regional characteristics. Both buildings’ ground floors contains open and interconnected spaces which allows flow of circulation between each other where the canal promenade and bridges become their transition.

Ying Charoen Square (1st Phase) - Completed in 2023,

this project is a community mall with a fresh market on the ground level and office on the top. Its mass is carved out on the lower part which allows accessibility from multi-directions, inviting people into the central atrium with yellow recreation platforms. The top part acts like a beacon, giving the building an iconic appearance. The facade is made of custom made terracotta bricks, resembling the basket pattern found in typical local market.

Ying Charoen Market Hall (2nd Phase) - The market hall is a vertical model of the typical fresh market. Inspired by the aesthetic of bamboo rattans found in typical fresh market, its iconic and strong appearance of woven facades with the recreation terraces create a dynamic movement and attract pedestrain and vehicles that passed by.

Ying Charoen Market Hall

Facade: Ying Charoen Market Hall

Bricks are chosen as a facade to soften and connect the building to the local. They are customized to resemble a woven basket with “Lai Pradit” pattern, which can be found in local markets.

Taking a difference interpretation, the Market Hall applies the “Lai Khat“ pattern to its columns and floor plates. This approach creates a unique and dynamic appearance for the building.

We were invited to a competition for a masterplan in Saphan Sung, which is comprised of various programs, for examples, mixed-use buildings, a hospital, a library and a villa market. It is aimed to be a new landmark for the suburb of Bangkok, bringing vitality and innovation to the area.

Designed with a focus on sustainability and a seamless connection between each building and a landscape, my schematic design propose a network of landscape that cuts through each building, merging indoor and outdoor activities. The design promotes natural ventilation and natural light. Moreover, it fosters public activities to flow from the surroundings into each building. The landscape design contains wide range of activities, such as leisure space, event plaza, playground and botanical garden.

Perforated facades act as double-skins for each building, filtering a strong daylight. The facades are lifted where each building’s entrance is located, emphasizing the its connection with the landscape. The lifted design also creates a silhoutte of a bridge, which expresses the meaning behind the name Saphan Sung: District of High Bridges.

The property is located outside the central of Ubon Ratchathani, which is surrounded a plain, with a nearby International Airport. With a large land plot, we design a dedicated area for a lake and a landscape, which are aimed to be the main views for the house. The owners requested that the master bedroom should be able to experience the airplanes taking off and landing. Another request was to create a grand and impactful entrance space. This idea originates the twisting form.

Through the experiment of design possibilities, three masses are arranged in a fan-shape, creating cascading roofs. Each roof is further splited into small segments of cascade, emphasizing the twisting effects. The first floor frames the view of the dedicated landscape and pond.

The second floor gradually rotates to frame a nearby urban forest. Finally, the third floors faces toward the airport, achieving the goal of the project. Each floor also owns a private reflective pool which creates a serene atmosphere along with the panoramic view of the vast plain.

The twisting mass creates a large negative space, an inverted cascade, underneath itself. This space becomes a stunning parking entrance whose triple-height space connects every floors together. Moreover, each floor is slightly splited which forms a sunken terrace and creates a dynamic hierarchy between common areas and private areas. This project creates a spectacular visual impact and challenges the limit of structure design.

FORM EXPERIMENT

Serveral twisting forms are experimented to achieve the most effective arrangement which is suitable for interior functions and retains a verticle connection. With round shapes, circles are choosen for double-height spaces. Its form compromises the twisting effect of the house where each floor does not perfectly stacked on each other.

S-ONE THEMATIC PAVILION

This project is a part of temporary installation: Thematic Pavilion for Architect’25 expo. The registered suppliers will coordinate with architects to design the pavilions using their products as the main materials. We are coordinated with S-ONE, the aluminum frame supplier. The pavilion is set to be a public space for the expo with various activities and experience with aluminum profiles.

The temporary installation can often lead to significant material waste from excessive cutting and drilling. In response to this, we aim to propose the design with installation technique that minimizes the waste and allows a complete disassembly for a reuse while showing the beauty of aluminum through the architecture. The goal is to use a full length aluminum profile as many as possible to avoid creating scraps. The cutting modules

Sakunkaew Manitsan Patcharin Piyanantasomdee

are carefully planned, with an acceptable length that can be reused. Moreover, the aluminums were left in their original “Mill“ finish from the factory, exposing their raw beauty and allowing for future repainting. With various experiments and testing to achieve non destructive installation, the pavilion structure is based on column and beam system with a grid line that is based on a span of the aluminums’ length. Three interconnected axes of aluminum is carefully thought to avoid drilling as much as possible.

The grid system is tilted to create a dynamic design that differentiate the pavilion from the grid layout of exhibition booths. The design also allows visitors to experience the aluminum in different scales both visually and physically from a large structure to a furniture.

Study Model

Various forms are tested to accomplish the design that minimizes waste.

The village of Kayaköy is famous for its stunning landscape and historical wonders. Its master plan was carefully thought out, with a unique architectural layout and design based on Greek architectural tradition. It echoes the soul of the lively village filled with rich culture and traditions. As a result, the approach’s purpose is to preserve all the existing elements to respect its cultural values. Apart from the monumental buildings, the visitors wander along the existing paths with therepetitive appearance of the ruins. We would like to break this repetitive pattern by introducing new symbolic landmarks that seamlessly integrate into the context, creating a dialogue between the past and the contemporary. Resonance of Ruins reimagines the village of Kayaköy with a series of minimal-intervention that harmonize

with the existing ruins and landscape. Through four activity hubs—Cultural, Agricultural, Exhibition, and Viewpoint—the design fosters a dialogue between past and present, allowing visitors to experience the village’s rich cultural heritage in a fresh, immersive way. Each hub serves as a symbolic landmark that integrates with the ruins, to preserve Kayaköy’s unique character, while enhancing its cultural, social, and ecological significance for locals and visitors.

The visitor center is composed of scattered stone-paved volumes, which refers to the scale of the ruins. Following the idea of the hubs, each volume is connected by a floating platform, allowing visitors to experience the surrounding views.

Strategy

In order to foster slow tourism, the hubs are loosely placed across the site according to the existing path, existing ruins and views to ensure that attractive spots are equally distributed and in harmony with the existing monumental buildings: churches and schools. The hub individually interacts with the topography and the ruins where it is located, resulting in 4 different landmarks that attract visitors to explore the village and dive deep into the culture and heritage of Kayaköy.

Concept

The hubs incorporate the existing ruins, which they attach as parts of them. The ruins become the entrance with the newly integrated programs, encouraging the visitors to explore the interior space of the past era while experiencing the new elements. These elevated platforms also allow the visitors to interact and explore the ruins from above. Materials are a modern reinterpretation of existing ones: stone, compressed earth and wood. Earth-mixed concrete is combined with red pigment, referring to the red paints in the village.

This house is located in a village that was separated in half by the newly constructed public road. The road cuts through the existing village park, deteriorating the green space and biodiversity. The existing house had been built for 30 years and required a rejuvenation to provide privacy and loud noises from the road while maximizing the green space. The original design was influenced by modern design revolution in Thailand, which contained compartmented rooms, complexed hip roof, dark teak decoration and hand-carved wood balastrades. The family asked to deliver a new spatial design with bright color palette to suite their interactive lifestyle. An existing roof and a staircase were kept to preserve as nostalgic

elements. The design purposes the juxtaposition between the past and the present. The new design is intended to be minimalistic with bright colors to emphasize the dark existing elements’ colors. Compartmentalized common spaces are redesigned into a single open space where the staircase becomes a focal point. The exterior design celebrates the village’s “curve“ characteristic. The curved fabric facades embrace the house, providing privacy, shade and soft appearance. The solid fence is carved to create a green pocket, creating a pleasant environment for approaching guests and neighbors. The project creates an experience where the users can acknowledge the past, yet feel the contemporary.

EXISTING CURVES

Curves can be found in this village. These curves serve as ornaments, creating a gimmick for the architecture. The new design aims to turn these curvatures into a contemporary design.

REINTERPRETATION

The Facades embrace the house to provide privacy and shade while framing the existing roof. The curve fence parts to form a pocket garden, creating a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere.
