HEAD COACH MATT NELSON

Matt Nelson returns for his fourth season at the helm of Appalachian State men’s soccer in 2014. Nelson led Appalachian to a 4-7-7 overall record in 2013 after an 8-7-4 finish in 2012. Harrison Delbridge and Stanley Broaden both earned first-team all-conference with Donovan Japp and Stephen Chapman earning freshman team honors.

Rick Beasley Interim Athletics Director

Debbie Richardson SWA

After taking over coaching duties after the first three matches of the 2011 season, the Mountaineers rattled off 11-straight games without a loss (7-0-4) falling one game short of the program’s longest unbeaten streak. His Apps recorded an App State-best 11 shutouts in 2011 and ranked among the nation’s top 12 defenses in goals-against, shutout percentage and save percentage. For his efforts, Nelson was named 2011 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. During his first season as assistant at App State, Nelson coached freshman Collin Taylor to 2008 first-team all-conference goalkeeper honors and all-freshman accolades. Nelson helped the App State defense lead the Southern Conference in fewest goals allowed and goals against average.

HEAD COACH KEVIN KENNEDY

Tom Kleinlein Athletics Director

16 < TOGETHER WE RISE

Cathy Beene SWA

The 2006 Southern Conference Coach of the Year, Kevin Kennedy enters his ninth season at the helm of Georgia Southern Eagle Soccer. Georgia Southern’s 2013 squad closed the season on an upward trend, winning four of the last five regular season games including a 2-1 overtime victory at Furman behind a pair of goals from Witt Carlisle. The Eagles avenged a late-season loss at UNCG with a 1-0 victory over the Spartans to open their final postseason in the SoCon. That win sent the Eagles to their season-straight SoCon Semifinal appearance. Hired days before the team reported for fall 2006 practice as the interim head coach, Kennedy helped turn around a 7-10-1 team that finished tied for last place in the SoCon in 2005, to a 10-6-3 record and a top10 regional showing that ultimately peaked at No. 7 in the South region by the NSCAA/ Adidas rankings. Kennedy was soon promoted to his current permanent head coach status in December 2006 following a remarkable season that exceeded initial expectations. Eagle players have garnered 10 All-SoCon selections. Jon Cox received the program’s first SoCon Freshman of the Year honor in 2006. In 2011 Luigi Clendening had a stellar season to pick up SoCon the SoCon Player of the Year award. Academically, Kennedy has seen several of his pupils demonstrate excellent work in the classroom. Following the 2006-07 school year, seven Eagles were represented on the SoCon Honor Roll, having earned at least a 3.0 GPA.

Jamie Boggs SWA

Head coach Brett Surrency enters his fifth season in command and his 10th overall with the Panthers. After a slow start last season, Surrency’s team finished the season 9-4-1 over the final 14 matches to finish 2013 with a 9-9-1 mark. GSU had a six-match unbeaten streak that included a 1-1 draw on the road against No. 6 Washington who reached the elite eight of the 2013 NCAA tournament. The Panthers then had a threematch winning streak that began with a 2-0 win against No. 9 Furman. Overall, Surrency has accumulated a 35-36-5 record in his four years at GSU, and he has always strived to play a very difficult schedule each year. During his tenor, the Panthers opponents have included No. 6 Washington and No. 9 Furman last season, top-ranked Maryland and No. 15 Old Dominion in 2012 and No. 20 USF, No. 22 William & Mary and No. 24 Duke in 2011. As a former all-conference defender, Surrency has brought a very organized and disciplined defensive system to GSU. The Panthers have been a very tough team to beat which is apparent by the 49 games decided by one goal, 15 overtime contest and 16 total shutouts.

HEAD COACH JOHN SCOTT

Kim Fierke Athletics Director

Betty Powell SWA

John Scott, who is just the seventh head coach in the 58-year history of the Hartwick men’s soccer program, enters his fifth season piloting the Hawks. This past fall, Scott led the Hawks to a record of 5-9-4 and a 3-2-1 mark in their final season in the Mid-American Conference. ‘Wick had memorable wins over national powers Akron (2-0) and West Virginia (1-0) over the course of the season. The victory over then-No. 9 Akron on its home field snapped the Zips’ NCAA record 49-game (46-0-3) conference unbeaten streak. Under Scott’s guidance, the Hawks qualified for the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2009. For his efforts, he would be named the MAC’s Gary V. Palmisano Coach of the Year. Nine players have earned Mid-American All-Conference honors under Scott over the last three seasons. Steven Amaya (2010) and Greg Mathers (2011) were both First Team selections with Owen Botting (2010), Jherrett Maroney (2011), Simon Greatwich (2011), Cleyon Brown (2012), Matthew Robertson (2013), Russ MacKinnon (2013), and Chris Walter (2013) each earning Second Team honors.

Howard University alumnus Phillip Gyau (B.A. ‘87) was named head coach of the men’s soccer team on April 28, 2014. The announcement was made by Interim President Wayne A.I. Frederick and Louis “Skip” Perkins, director of athletics. Gyau brings more than 20 years of experience to the position as a respected coach and a former U.S. National Team Player. “We are excited to bring an alumnus home,” said Perkins. “Phillip Gyau is one of the most technically proficient coaches in the world and an extraordinary recruiter. We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber join our athletic program.” Since 1998, Coach Gyau has placed 20 players on Youth National teams. He has played in six National Championships and won four of them. Gyau has several years of coaching experience. In 2007 and 2011, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) named him Coach of the Year. In 2007, Gyau was inducted into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame. “I am so thrilled to return to Howard because it’s the place that molded me into the coach and player I am today,” said Gyau. “Howard taught me that the key ingredient to happiness and success is to never give less than your best. I am looking forward to giving back to the program that gave me so much. I will do my best to return this soccer program to prominence.” Gyau is married to Leslie Amina Gyau. Their son, Joseph-Claude Gyau, and daughter, Mia-Irene Gyau, are both soccer players.

HEAD COACH DIDIER ORELLANA

Lenny Kaplan Athletics Director

Alexis Schug SWA

Didier Orellana was named head coach of NJIT men’s soccer in March 2013 after serving as the lead assistant coach the previous two seasons. In Orellana’s first season at the NJIT helm, he led the Highlanders to a 7-9-2 record against a schedule that included just six home games. On the road, NJIT had had a pair of one-goal losses (at #19 St. John’s and at #22 Fairleigh Dickinson). Orellana was an assistant for NJIT in 2011 and 2012, when the team set a school Division I record for wins (10) and finished ranked eighth in the North Atlantic Region coaches’ poll. In 2012, NJIT won 10 games, doubling the previous Division I high for the Highlanders (began DI play in 2004). Orellana is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State, where he started for the 1995 Division II National Champions and reached the national semifinals in his three other seasons. He has coached at all three NCAA levels (assistant at Division II NYIT; six seasons as head coach at Division III Manhattanville; and, NJIT). At Manhattanville (200510), his teams won 56, topping the school’s career list. Didier and his wife, Elizabeth, reside in Queens, NY, with their three children.
