agri. village masterplan

PROJECT: Regional Planning LOCATION: Dushanbe, Tajikistan DESCRIPTION: The Agricultural Vision is a re-imagining of the way agriculture and people co-exist in Dushanbe. The village features an agricultural extension campus to teach better farming practices, new apartment and single-family dwelling units to reduce sprawl, and community agricultural plots to encourage people to grow their own food. The proposed water feature encourages deposition of sedimentation due to increased flooding of the city.

This project was a collaboration between students at the Fay Jones School and Bell Engineering School. Our design’s three primary Rainwater Flow Diagram objectives are to (1) reduce stormwater runoff through mitigation efforts such as green roofs, rainwater collection, and infiltration, (2) provide opportunities for food production and distribution by designing a food forest on the south lawn water and raised beds within the new green roof, and (3) alleviate urban heat island effect by introducing more extensive vegetation on the roof. Additionally, this green infrastructure will serve to educate and inform the public about environmental and social issues through both signage and interaction as well as provide opportunity for community outreach. The implementation of this project on campus is expected to both reduce food insecurity in the surrounding community and minimize stormwater runoff on the two buildings that house the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design.

views from the trench

A Ripple in Service was a group project composed of 3 collegues tasked with designing a memorial for the veteran community located in and around Springdale, AR. The site is composed of a large central mound rising 9 feet in elevation that houses a community space. The mound is surrounded by five ‘cuts’ within the Earth, each symbolizing the five branches of the US military. The cuts contain seating facing towards rammed earth walls punctured with framed views of the Community Mound. Outside of the ‘cuts’ are several private gathering spaces for a more intimate experience. The Community Mound features clusters of geometric blocks arranged to encourage gathering.

and out between them, providing an ADA accessible path up the Mound and allowing people to get out and read the inscriptions. At the top of the Mound is our Community space. This zone is made up of clusters of 1, 2, and 3 foot high blocks mirroring the circular geometry of the sit pockets of inhabitability, allowing groups to gather and converse. In the center of this space sits a reflective water table, placing a ‘picture’ of the sky into the m section space for kids to play and friends to gather. From the ‘Cuts’, visitors have the chance to slip out to the forested edge at the site’s perimeter, where they can experience meadows of native prairie gra views of the park-like conditions surrounding the memorial and the surrounding community.

BIO-FITNESS CENTER DICKSON ST.

PROJECT: Urban Design LOCATION: Fayetteville, Arkansas DESCRIPTION:

Bio-Fitness is largely conceptualized as a piece of biophilic design sited along Dickson Street, one of the most popular streets in Fayetteville. The fitness center focuses on biophilic principles, including the use of natural materials, dynamic lighting and air flows, as well as native planting that provide shade, texture, variety, and scents throughout the building. The center aims to reduce stress and increase productivity through biophilia.

KIBLER RESIDENCE SWING BED

PROJECT: Residential Furniture LOCATION: Jonesboro, Arkansas DESCRIPTION: The client desired a weatherresistant queen sized swing bed built for their porch. The bench was built with 2x4 and 4x4 lumber with deck screws. The bed was then sanded, stained, and waterproofed before stainless steel screw eye hooks were bolted in the four corner posts. Once on site, the bed was lifted in place and secured with S hooks, chain, and more eye screw hooks. The client was very pleased with the finished product.

Conventional bunk beds were not suitable for the client, so the proposal was a ‘floating’ bed design, secured along the walls and the galvanized steel ladder, which acts as functional and structural. A structural frame made of 2x4’s was constructed before reclaimed cedar wood was mounted along the sides for a clean finish.
