Many commercial and social uses occupied the building at various times. These include a public library (prior to the 1903 construction of the Carnegie Library), Sons of Norway Hall, the History Club, and Armory Hall. Early businesses were jewelry, men’s clothing, a billiards hall, paper hanger, and a shoemaker. This distinctive red brick building still has many of its original interior and exterior features. The building is included as a significant contributing structure in the 1994 Downtown Commercial Historic District.

This three-story brick building is a good example of the Romanesque Revival style as applied to commercial architecture. It has a red brick façade which is richly detailed with rounded arches, ornate brickwork, and glazed terra cotta accents which is characteristic of the Romanesque Revival.
