Denny Sanford Premier Center / Sioux Falls, SD The Denny Sanford Premier Center is the single largest public building project in the city’s history. The venue is the region’s leading events facility, with an area of 303,000 s.f. and seating for up to 13,000 depending on the event. The Denny Sanford Premier Center made $1.1 million in six months of operation and generated $900,000 in sales tax revenue. The city’s revenue projections for the first year were in the $1.3 million range. First-year events included concerts, collegiate & high school basketball tournaments, hockey games, indoor football games, rodeo, monster truck events, Cirque du Soleil and trade shows. The design team faced challenges in meeting a tight budget, connecting and relating to the existing convention center, limiting the amount of glazing and stone used in the project, and breaking down the monumental scale of the facility.

Design features highlight the context and history of the Sioux Falls area, including a strong horizontal emphasis to complement the prairie geography, use of locally quarried quartzite stone, and natural materials throughout the interior. The horizontal striations alternatively take the form of reveals in the metal panels and precast concrete walls, stone inlays, and interior wood and metal trim. The exterior bands also speak to the glazed arches of the c.c. and contribute to a pedestrian scale for the building as visitors draw near. Carefully sized entrance canopies and the linear south canopy with integrated banners continue the effort to transition from monolithic to human scale. Sioux Quartzite is the traditional material for public buildings in the area dating back to the founding of the city. The stone was used here to reinforce the civic nature of the project and enhance key areas including the ticket windows and the south club. Extensive use of natural materials continues throughout the interior with wood ceiling clouds and wall panels, natural slate at the west club and kasota stone at the north club, and exposed quartzite aggregate in the polished concrete floors.

The north and south pairs of stair/ elevator cores are linked by mechanical rooms above the public floors, creating squared arches of precast concrete that express the building structure. The squared arches are repeated throughout the interior- at concessions stands, framing future graphic walls at restrooms, and casework in the suites. The facility was designed with extensive community input, with over two dozen public and citizen committee meetings. Citizen input was gathered and implemented on all aspects of the design, from the site selection through interior finishes. The “fan experience was the priority and the lens through which all design decisions were considered. Public concourses feature simple, timeless finishes with clean graphics and tasteful integrated advertising to avoid the visual cacophony so often associated with this building type. Bids came in under budget, allowing the addition of amenities like high-end upholstered seats for the main bowl, a line array house speaker system, and full height tile finishes in the public restrooms. The lighting supplier provided LED sports lights at no additional cost, making this the first new construction arena project to have this technology in the nation. The bowl was designed around an NHL regulation rink, with no obstructed views from any seat for any center-floor event. Efficient planning both in plan and section resulted in top row seats that are 4 feet closer to center ice than the existing arena, with double the seating capacity. Flexibility was built in with masking curtains, telescopic seating and portable seating to accommodate any size or type of event from a trade show to a boxing match to a performance by Cirque du Soleil.

The main lobby soars to 60 feet and features a terrazzo floor matching the connected convention center. Glazing was limited to under 10% of the building skin for cost control. Careful placement of openings allows full daylighting of most public circulation with limited areas even extending into the bowl.

The Denny Sanford Premier Center is LEED Certified, one of under 50 arenas in the nation to achieve this standard. Sustainable features include: • LED sports lighting • Low-flow restroom fixtures • Local quartzite • Built with 80% local labor

Denny Sanford Premier Center / Sioux Falls, SD

The Premier Center provides world-class amenities for its users, including: • three unique clubs • 22 suites • 20 loge boxes • cutting edge LED center scoreboard • 360-degree video ribbon board • 100+ televisions • 12+ concession locations • 24+ portable concession carts The public floors offer 270- and 360-degree circulation around the bowl. The main concourse is broken into smaller-scale spaces for socializing before, during and after events. Clubs on the south, west and north sides offer unique environments to enhance the visitor experience. Along with concession stand themes that also vary from location to location, these ameneties encourage exploration and allow new experiences with each visit.
